/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - SCOTCH GRAIN EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

How do you feel about brogued, cap toe, boots? I really can't decide if I like them or not because I'm not really sure what fit you would pair them with. Just looking at the style by itself I think they're neat but I'm not sure I could really work it into my fits. I dress white collar at work and I feel like my style after work or on the weekends is too casual for them.
>>
>>18304931
Just get one with it lowered a quarter inch like the Whites cutter or cruiser.
Or just ask.
>>
>>18305225
Cap toe is more casual than plain toe, brogue is more casual than an unadorned cap toe. Generally the more adorned the boot the more casual it is.

I bought some Redwing boots last month and I'm really loving them, however I can't find a good 8 inch boot that I like, what brands can I look at to buy some good quality 8 inch boots? Looking for a fully black one like pic related but with black laces as well
>>
>>18305960
Frank's patriot, you can buy black leather laces on their website since you'd be ordering from them or Nick's which is the best place to buy leather laces.
>>
>>18305961
Also it is 10 inch but you'll be fine, those 2 inches isn't much.
>>
>>18305947
it really isn't but the standard for dress are in the toilet globally so if you wear a service boot with lug soles it's still dresser than 95% of people as long as it's a smooth leather
>>
>>18305961
>>18305963

Yes. The black diesel (not the one with the leather sole) if used with the thinner laces can be dressed up.
t.uses the same in business casual office environment

I just bought my first pair of dark brown suede chelseas

I wore them all day in the office but didn't take any photos.
They are made by TLB on their "Madison" last with a low profile vibram commando sole.

Very good so far, I wore them with wool socks and they were still a little loose so maybe I need a tongue pad. I use tongue pads on all of my loafers so I guess I need it here too because no laces.

Madison last has a nice round shape that's not very pointy and doesn't have any toe bump so I'm happy it doesn't look too gay - that was my biggest worry in a chelsea.
The TLB suede is still among the best I've seen and it has a very luxurious nap, that's a little gay but I'll take it. Maybe a coarser, rougher, lower quality suede would've been less fruity (like what Alden uses) but it is what it is.

I approve of these, I own a pair of SLP tan suede chelseas and they're one of my favourite pairs. The fragility of good suede is drastically overestimated. And, like any good boots, a bit of wear and tear only makes them look better.

Alden kidskin boots split on that back seam. Who should I send it to? Alden? Some random cobbler? Or are they fucked and a writeoff?

Did the stitching just come undone? A good cobbler can fix this no issue. Alden does some questionable repairs sometimes, but still better than a random cobbler probably.

For real? I can’t imagine they would be too difficult to style and not look gay. I exclusively have been wearing 1940s wide cut selvedge denim or trousers. I’ve been finding out that narrow footwear looks really great when you contrast it against a pair of wide cut bottoms. It just looks authentically vintage. Most of the “Chelseas are gay” sentiment is because literal gay men will pair them with a pair of slim/skinny cut jeans or chinos.

>>18307592
I got them on Monday and have been wearing them, with wool socks, around the house for 4 to 5 hours (or however long it takes before the back of my heel starts to hurt from rubbing against the back).
>>
>>18307602
start with 2 hours a day inside the house then double it the next and so on and so forth, make sure you're lacing the shaft snug, looseness increases friction
>>
Will Grant Stone move manufacturing to the US?
>>

>make sure you're lacing the shaft snug, looseness increases friction
Good point. My current laces tie the shaft enough, but not as tight as I want. Maybe I need longer laces to get the full closure.
>>

I only wear them with my work boots and just use whatever bullshit Walmart sells. They make me look taller than I actually am, though, so you may disappoint people.

I disagree. They can look pretty effeminate by themselves (just like Chelseas) so you're pretty much follow the same general guidelines. The only tip I'd offer is to stay away from the ones that get ridiculous with the strap and/or buckle.

I'm thinking of picking up these TLB malroca loafers. They have rubber inserts in the leather soles. Anyone have any experience with these soles in this style? Will the compromise the durability at all? I generally trust this factory to make nice shoes but i have no experience with this style of sole construction.

Does Enzo Bonafe let you customize the last on MTO shoes? They have a pair of boots I think would look really nice with the norvegese chain stitch.
Also what are the downsides of a norvegese chain stitch

they can do small mods, feathering, reducing/increasing instep and so on for no charge. As long u send them back to EB for resoles, the norvegese chain stitch is fine, the threads might get dirty i guess? I only ever did linear norvegese.

Planning a trip to the UK in February and high on the list going to Edward Green to get sized and hopefully place an order for some Galways, but I'm undecided on the leather. I'm definitely using the 64 last, ridgeway soles, and veldtschoen construction to make it a proper country boot. Initially I was going to pick rosewood country but I was gifted a pair of derbies in the same leather, so I'm open to other options. Anyone have experience with their london or hatch grain leathers, or own a pair and would have some recommendations?

No. They will pass the tariffs onto the consumer, people will still buy them, then they will just add an extra step to their production chain to have boots shipped to Italy from China, where they will have a bunch of illegal sweatshop workers lace the boots so they can then slap a "made in Italy" label on them and then ship them from Italy to the US circumventing the tariffs (they will not lower the price back, of course).

Astorflex makes much better models than that. But if you like it, go for it. Handmade shoes in a small factory that never sold itself since 1820. You can't go wrong.
Also, I don't think they lie in the poorfag range to be honest.

That chestnut colour is beautiful. If it looks that good in person and if that's an option in stock that's what I'll pick. A lot of my shoes are already dark brown and I'm hoping for something different. I thought about 2-tone or mixed materials for the shaft but I'm really not sold on it yet. It's something I'll have to decide in person after handling them.

Moc toes are workear/casual, so whatever fits that kind of look, jeans tees henleys chinos and so on. As far as how they look they're kind of eh, toebox looks a bit off, probably because it tapers instead of following the curvature of the sole to keep the height uniform, anyway I've seen worse.

It depends on a lot. What cut are your jeans? Are they wide leg, or just regular straight? What is your general style? I'm just gonna assume you're American since these threads mostly are. My brannock is 8.5D US
I wear 8 in Whites, Alden, Red Wing, etc.
The TLBs are 7.5 UK and the fit is great. Just convert your US size to UK (1 full size down) and you should be good. If you order from TLB's website you'll get an email from the owner asking about sizing to make sure you're good. Huge fan of the brand
I wear the split toes for anything. I think they're versatile enough to wear with jeans but I actually wore mine the other day with a suit jacket with a client and it was fine

Jim Green African Ranger boot. They're not pretty, not refined at all, but they are lightweight and in your budget.
