/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - FLAT BOX IS BACK EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Boondockersfag from a few threads back.

I got a pair from amazon for 119. It's definitely better that everything else I've seen around that price point. The construction seems sturdy enough but the waxy finish on the leather is a bit too matte for my taste. I don't think they can be polished but I look forward to the creases near the toe box. I got half a size down from my usual size and they fit snug and comfortably. I'd rather have a full leather interior instead of the cheap fabric half liner. I took the insole out and placed a leather and cork insole. They're built using the munson last so it's expected they feel like I'm wearing combat boots. Going back to clarks again feels like I'm wearing sneakers. Would recommend if you're a poorfag saving up for iron rangers like me

There's a ton of retailers in the EU that sell them, and more that a handful will run some good sales. Mr Porter does something like 40% off if you go over a certain amount every now and then.

Thoughts on Carmina? I need new black, plain Oxfords for my dress blues uniform, and I'm looking at Carmina as a top pick.

Wholecut oxfords are the dressiest shoes there are, dunno about uniform dress codes but you're probably not gonna get much use out of them besides that, pretty hard to dress down a black oxford as it is.
>>
>>18312437
carmina is ok
i don't know the regulations, but i think when they say plain black oxford for dress blues uniform they actually mean a plain toe blucher like an alden 9901 or carmina 531, which is a type of derby shoe and not oxford
it all depends how much you expect to wear these shoes and if you really want to go all out for them
i wouldn't get these wholecuts and i wouldn't get cordovan if they actually expect you to wax them
the shine of cordovan mostly comes from the leather itself through brushing and burnishing, not from a wax polish layer on top
brand new cordovan doesn't even allow for a wax layer build up, because it's so greasy any wax will slide around on it when you try to buff it
the high solvent content in wax polish will ruin the color of cordovan anyway over time and because it's so dense any pigmented creams won't recolor sufficiently, the pigment doesn't penetrate deep enough
that's how people end up with permanently lighter toes and heels on their shoes
black cordovan isn't truly black anyway and in very direct sunlight you can see that's it's really intense green, which becomes noticable when you wear it with black pants, so not that formal
>>
>>18312516
You'd be surprised. I am not actually worried about chances to wear whatever I get. I'm looking at value, quality, price, and material specifics, but how much I'll wear something is not an issue here.
>>
>>18312518
>i don't know the regulations, but i think when they say plain black oxford for dress blues uniform they actually mean a plain toe blucher
Yes and no. The issued shitty plastic shoes were wear are plain toe bluchers, but the Regulations allow us to wear basically any black dress shoe as long as it doesn't have ornamentation (like broguing) and it's material is either leather or faux leather. Even dress boots are allowed.

Which is actually why I'm here. For the past year, I wore a Balmoral leather/suede button boot, and it was technically allowed since suede is a type of leather and it was all black, but our commander told me it was slightly unbecoming of an officer to be rules-lawyering the regulations this hard just to sate my autism and these were clearly on the outside edge of acceptable. So I'm buying something more traditional, but I still want a real oxford not a derby.

>it all depends how much you expect to wear these shoes and if you really want to go all out for them
I wear dress shoes at minimum once a week in civilian wear and once a month in uniform. If I get a tour at the pentagon, which eventually is inevitable, I'll be wearing them every day for 4 years.

>i wouldn't get these wholecuts and i wouldn't get cordovan if they actually expect you to wax them
the shine of cordovan mostly comes from the leather itself through brushing and burnishing, not from a wax polish layer on top
brand new cordovan doesn't even allow for a wax layer build up, because it's so greasy any wax will slide around on it when you try to buff it
If the shoes shine naturally it's not necessary. A lot of people wear patent leather and obviously we don't shine those. The important part is that they look shined and professional, they don't care whether I use wax, or a brush, or whatever method the material calls for.

>pic related, the boots I wore until last werk
>>
>>18312518
>black cordovan isn't truly black anyway and in very direct sunlight you can see that's it's really intense green, which becomes noticable when you wear it with black pants, so not that formal
This is actually a concern. It does need to be black, and if it looks like a different color very obviously that could be an issue, but if it's subtle then it's fine.

Our pants are also dark blue, not black, so that helps a bit.

>the regs i was skirting if anyone is interested

I always liked those boots, they were everything I wanted in a casual boot. Shame they don't ship here and I'm fairly certain they don't do wide sizing.
>>
>>18312249
For what it’s worth, I had a pair of dirt-cheap (~$170) Tommy Hilfiger boots with cemented soles that last me 3+ years of daily wear from early fall to late spring. It wasn’t the outsole that gave up the ghost, rather the leather insole and the textile lining. As I said, daily wear, no rotation, with proper care it would still be fine, probably.
>>
>>18312684
Isn’t stichdown notoriously hard to resole? I’m liking some of the Moma models, but I’m a bit wary about it.

I also find it concerning how there is almost no info about the boots on their site (other than “this i a boot in antique effect leather” and some pictures). No info about the lining, no size guide, nothing. Oh, and it constantly switches back to Italian, even after being set to English.
>>
>>18312845
At that price point if the sole wears out you're throwing them in the garbage and buying new ones, this is for those who want the artificially aged look but can't afford Guidi.
>>
>>18312845
Any decent cobbler in Europe can resole a shoe with a stitchdown construction. Astorflex also uses it and you can send them your boots to get them resoled with their machines.
If you're worried about that I would advise writing an email to Moma. A lot of brands in Italy primarily work with retailers, there are shops everywhere, so that's why the websites are sometimes a bit overlooked or concise.

>>18312879
Retarded advice. If you love your shoes you will resole them even if they didn't cost you 800 euros. They also have boots that are not artificially aged.
>>
>>18312879
They cost about the same as Red Wings, you fucking retard.
>>
>>18312896
>>18312903
Stitchdown costs more to resole which makes the value proposition of resoling vs buying worse, at entry level prices it's not worth it, like imagine paying 150 bucks to resole a 200 bucks pair of Astorflex, that's just dumb.

not hard to resole, its probably the easiest and cheapest method to resole. But doing it properly, not punching new holes into the flared out upper turning it into swiss cheese, is what most cobblers wouldn't do. And the ones that handstitch it are very expensive.

before i bought them i was hesitant cuz sizing
managed to snatch a pair and they fit really good.
leather was a bit hard at first but it got softer over time and wear.
but leather is also nice thick and durable, scratch resistant even cuz any scratches just go away if you brush it off with a brush.
hands down top tier stuff for the price tag and absolutely 0 pretensions bs
Is a boot, you wear them and go do manly stuff in them no fucks given

There's absolutely no way a resoling from Astorflex can cost 150 euros. Especially if you don't need to ship the shoes from another continent. They're not stupid, your argument is also in their minds. It's gonna be around 70 bucks. 40 from a local cobbler.

Russell Moccasin. They stopped making that exact model a few years ago, though you can pretty certainly special order it from them - probably 90% of their business is special order. Those boots are basically a Back Country without the army studs in the top 3 eyelets, and with the padded collar from the Professional Hunter. It's impossible to tell for sure from that photo but I'd bet the leather is their Walnut Timberjack, back in that era that was the main non-exotic leather they used.

I've learned /fa/ was right the hard way.

Over the last few months, I ordered and returned several pairs of boots for around $200 that /fa/ wouldn't touch with a seven-foot pole. Like Polo Ralph Lauren own brand ones', for example.

On pictures, they looked like decent knock offs of classic models. IRL, they looked like childrens' boots, the ones mothers buy for their rapidly growing children to throw away in a few months.

There's something about leather that lets you pinpoint exactly how much it cost. There is no cheap expensive looking leather, ever.

>There's something about leather that lets you pinpoint exactly how much it cost. There is no cheap expensive looking leather, ever.
all the modern tanneries today that want to sell to big fashion houses are competing who can get the most yield out of a hide and make the cheapest leather possible while still being able to pass audits and be certified by LWG or something else
the big phrase going around is "sustainability", which just means using as much industry byproduct as possible for tanning and using as little water as possible
quality doesn't matter, what matters is that it can be easily worked and manipulated by machines and that it's super consistent

No they didn't. They used to have exactly one model that was available ready-to-wear: the Oneida moccasin. Everything else was a custom build, you had to call them up and tell them what you wanted and they'd figure out the price and put you in their queue. I bought several of their boots through their custom build system of that era (they came to Houston every year for the Safari Club show). What the new owners did was jack up the price of the custom build service to cover what it was actually costing, expanded the ready-to-wear offerings, and add a new build level (premier build) in between the ready-to-wear and custom build tiers.

when i ordered i was expecting fully for sizing to be a hit or miss.
when i wore them first time they were hard at first but after a few short walks started to mold to my feet.
their website says how to measure your hoofs and then add 7-10mm depending if you want a tighter or looser fit.
i thought about this and concluded that if my foot was X long and going by their minimum recommended 7mm up in size it would give me realistically only about 3.5mm in front of the toe and 3.5 mm back in the heel. this sounded to tight with high margin of error and high probability of too tight fit. If i add their max recommendation of +10mm you end up in the +2 size from your real foot size. but it leaves you enough room to be tight or loose depending on how tight you lace them.
hope it helps anon

its hard to tell from an insole pic unless you're literally 1 size too small. Does it feel tight? Can you move your toes around? Wear thinner socks. Viberg are easy to deal with if you have a sizing issue. As long as it's not a preorder you can usually exchange no problem as long as the boots are unworn. There was no additional shipping charge for the exchange too which was nice considering how much Viberg already charge.

they use the cheapest available leather which typically means its very "flat" in its appearance so they apply a spray painted on finish but obviously lipstick on a pig

I wore a new pair of black Jim Green ARs yesterday with jeans and a tshirt. They were very comfortable and it looked good. However, when I put on a hoodie, it didn't feel right at all. Hoodie + sneakers seemed more appropriate

I get like 15 buck shoe trees and whatever saphir conditioner matches the leather. For 100 bucks those shoe trees better be lasted, and even then I wouldn't do it unless these were like super fancy dress oxfords and I had to wear them often enough to care.

what is with the sole ? recycled materials ?
>>

No tranny heel, just a very well defined heel counter. The sole is rubber-cork from Osullivans. Wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it at first, but it’s actually really comfortable and lightweight

just keep it simple
if you don't know what something is, then just don't choose it, you are not missing out on anything special
they have some reference material on the bakers site info-custom boot options
>last
55 last
>height
6 inch is standard, if you want taller go with 8 (see farmer/rancher), rather don't get anything else unless you know what you want
default smokejumper is 10 inch, taller than most casual boots need to be
>lace design
go plain toe for a standard config or lace to toe for a boot that has one more eyelet at the bottom (see whites cutter)
>toe, upper counter leather
just choose one leather for the whole boot, don't go two-tone, unless you've seen how it looks like on another pair
most of the leathers options are seen on stock whites or just google them
>toe cap
self explanatory, "4 row" is the standard stock cap toe (see cap toe MP), the "medallion toe cap" is the one with punched holes (stevens dress cap), nobody goes 2 row
>thread color
just go factory choice
>celastic toe
the toe structure, single celastic is the default on most boots, go with that if you have no preference
no celastic the toe will collapse and lose it's shape over time
don't go double celastic
>steel toe
don't
>top/pull loop/hardware
go to info tab for reference pics
>leather liner
if you want the shaft to be lined or unlined, the vamp is lined always
>sole trim
single or double row stitch on the sole, most go with double, get single if you have small feet
>midsole
never choose double midsole
>heel base
standard is the logger heel with the curved profile
traveller is a block heel, almost nobody chooses that, no reference on stock models
>heel lift
go default, never change the heel height
>edge
natural is stock on MPs for reference, pretty light, but darkens with time anyway
brown is the default on most other stock whites models (see cruiser), still pretty light in color
>never get the lineman patch
>soles
never get the leather soles
vib 430 is a good default
>>
>>18311182
ruined by those boring color jeans

>>18312015
>baggy pant, slim boot

Hi I'm a new Fage, never bought boots, can anyone give me some boots advice please? Use will be mostly for aimless wandering and a bit of hiking. I'm in a coastal area so salt will be a problem. I'm considering solovairs derby and jim green African rangers at the moment, they are the only in the 200€~ price that I really like the look of.

What are some boots that don't have an inward pointing big toe shape? I will not wear footwear that goes against my foots alignment.

Really good rundown. I'd also say it should be noted that if you want mostly standard options (standard trim, no toe cap, logger heel, chromexcel leather, vbar sole) you are better off just ordering a Cruiser from White's. The Bounty Hunter is just special name for a Cruiser with custom options sold through Baker's. A standard Cruiser ordered from White's will likely ship much faster.
>>
>>18316184
That's how I feel about my White's. Nothing is feel comfortable like them. The arch support is so fucking good.

Hey are you supposed to tighten the screws on the bottom of the soles of a pair of Frank’s Boots? I have a pair of Patriot’s and have been tightening the screws and have found it to help the arch support but they didn’t tell me too and I’m hoping that I’m not fucking my shit up

>heel base height
So does that make them into high heels if I raise them up above standard? Would it be faggy to get raised ones just for the experience? They would surely still look masculine, and as a 6’1 hapa I don’t think they would appear like a manlet cope boot; would it be fashy to own a high heeled boot for the novelty?
>>
>>18316232
Boots> drinking yourself to death, even if they’re garbage, they’ll still make you feel like you have something to live for, whereas to drink is to die

I appreciate this insight Anon, but I believe that the Bounty Hunter grants me a great opportunity for I as a man to explore and express my creativity towards my understanding of myself as a sovereign being, and allows me to refine my understanding of myself and my proportions, just to build one my own. The difference between what I think I like, and what I actually seek in a pair of boots could not be tested harder in any realer/truer circumstance. There’s no other way to get an 8” semi dress in red iguana/your dog’s leather anywhere else on this planet, and that’s where the beauty of the Bounty Hunter lies

I'm new to boots and I want to see if they're really for me before I spend a ton of money on them. There's this brand called pavers that apparently makes good quality hand made boots.

Any UK anon here who has experience with them? What are they like comfort and durability wise?
