/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - WESTBALE EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

How do I care for nubuck leather? Does it require a different conditioner than fullgrain? My current maintenance for fullgrain leather is:

I totally agree. I just wanted something simple myself when I went down the Bounty Hunter rabbithole and realized what I was essentially going to order was black chromexcel Cruisers with a unnecessary lead time. So I ended up ordering Cruisers from White's instead and got them in hand less than a week after ordering (I also paid for 2 day air lol). I'm probably gonna order some 7 inch brown roughout Bounty Hunters once the black Friday sale hits.

>>
>>18316777
Shoe trees have springs in them so they can change size a lot though, you have to royally fuck up the sizing for them to not fit.
>>
>>18316777
That sounds like it would make sense for me as well, also because I have a sole at the bottom of the shoe (which I can take out) and a sole stuck to the roof of the shoe.
If I order I think i will go for 41, and with the way the shoe narrows at the toe tip it just seems hard to imagine the shoetrees would go all the way in there when they arent custom fitted anyway is what Im thinking.
Im looking at one of those with adjustable width
>>
>>18316767
Shoe sizes mean literally nothing. I’m everything between 41 (some UK boots) to 43 1/3 (Adidas sneakers).
>>
This fucking retailer, I just want to ask about doing a custom order but they won't reply to emails or IG. Are there any other bootmakers that would make a good boondocker in natural roughout that accommodates wider feet?
>>
>>18316767
shoe trees should have a spring in them that lets it fit a couple sizes
>>
>>18316819
You could try doing a custom White's MP configuration to imitate a boondocker. Or do something like a plain toe Bounty Hunter with a lowered block heel through Baker's.
>>
>>18316819
Something like this would certainly look close to a Boondocker unless you're an autist that needs it to be a repro.
>>
>>18316843

>>
>>18316839
>>18316843
I don't need a perfect repo, but the back on the bounty hunter would bother me. I wonder if I can convince them to do an MP-M1 for me in that same leather and with a 430 sole. Is there a reason all the leathers available for the bounty hunter aren't the same for the custom MPs?
>>
>>18316847
Call (or email) Baker's and/or White's they're usually down to work something special out. From what I've heard they are especially sympathic to wide footed potential clients because they know it can be a pain in the ass to find properly fitting footwear.

Different brands size differently. It was imposdible to fit the 42 shoe trees in the Red Wings. The 41s fit with the springs fully compressed.
I would add that most brands convert sizes from US to EU as they please. Which makes buying online even more of a hassle.

>>18316794
I just bought them at my local mall so exchanging them wasn't an issue. At the end of the day it's a carved piece of cedar wood with a couple of springs.

1: Any boots with a chunky profile like Red Wing Iron Ranger and Red Wing Blacksmith? I don't mind the clown toe, I want something with heft but different leather than Red Wing has. I also want to avoid PNW boots because I don't have the patience to wait two years for a pair of boots.

2: Anyone here own Alden Indy boots? I like the style and a friend of mine is selling his pair for a great price, I'm just curious about the durability of modern Alden. His pair is four years old, it was an impulse buy that he never really wore so they're still in great shape.
>>
>>18317252
Four year old Indys will be better than today's. They aren't worth full price but if your friend is selling a lightly used pair for a good price it's worth. Depends howuch they are worn.

>They aren't worth full price but if your friend is selling a lightly used pair for a good price it's worth. Depends howuch they are worn.

They've been worn maybe ten times and he's selling them for 200. No creases on the leather, sole is in great shape as well. I'm probably going to buy them, I think the price is pretty fair.

that's debatable. jg are generally shitckickers while rw heritage and astorfles are fashion focused with ok construction

The only reason JG are the designated shitkickers is not that they're exceptionally well constructed, it's that they're CHEAP and reasonably well built for the price, RW boots could take as much if not more punishment while being more comfortable and sure more fashionable as well, but of course you could buy two pairs of african rangers for one pair of RW so it's hard to beat that value.

Thanks anon, they are my first pair of mainline White's. I'm very happy with them both in looks and in comfort. My job is 60% office, 40% field work, and they have been excellent to me since I bought them back in June.
>>
>>18317941
You're killing me anon, those look great but I don't want to buy any boots with a long ass wait time.

Shit. I don't mean that as an exaggeration, that was a terrible choice. Why not just spend an additional 50 or so euros and get a pair of proper Goodyear welted boots with decent leather?

The nearest option with a very similar style are these astorflex for 250 euros. But they cost double. Is that a huge inprovement?
>>
>>18318190
yes because those are stitchdown instead of the glued shit
>>
>>18318190
you alreaady bought the other boot, so why do you care at this point about the nearest similar boot?
>>
>>18318193
Idk about your obsession with soles. I’ve had many cheap boots die in front of me, but it was never about the sole coming off.
>>
>>18318197
Cuz by “bought” I mean “ordered”, it’s reversible.
>>
> Is that a huge inprovement?
yes stitched is a huge "inprovement"
>b-b-bu
who the fuck cares stitchdown > glued

All depends on the clicking. Well clicked pairs will roll and minimize the creasing. Mine have this awesome marble-like pattern on the counters I fucking love that you'd never get with most other leather types.

I’m the anon who got burned by them. The leather around the eyelets stretched.
I’ve asked some shoe repair shops, a cobbler, and a leather worker about them.
The shoe repair shops said they can’t be fixed. The cobbler said they are fine. The leather worker said they are fine and recommended waiting to see if the eyelet falls out completely then replacing just the eyelets.
My cope is the cobbler and leather worker are more knowledgeable about leather shoes than the people who just replace soles.
>>
>>18318248
They look fine to me, same opinion as the leather worker; I’d say cheap hardware issue

Yes and the cheap shit leather BS used stretched when pulling pressure was applied to the point where the second to top eyelet has a visible gap now
>>
>>18318258
>>18318265
Good hardware will cinch to the leather to keep it tight and in position around itself, cheap chink aluminium bullshit will melt at room temperature, so using them as a hardware material for something like a boot is irresponsible at best
>>
>>18318132
The toe springs aren't even at the same level. Honestly if I was gonna buy glued shit I'd get Timbs premium or Panama Jack if you're too cool for Timbs. Jim Green has some decent models at that price point, Astorflex has some stuff at $200 or less if you look around. Or try to buy used unworn or lightly worn.
>>
>>18318256
Do you think it’s a DIY fix when they do eventually fail? The leather worker thought so.

>>18318266
You can’t see it in the picture but the top eyelet has a larger gap.
>>
>>18318272
I don’t have any experience with it, but I would believe all you’d need is a simple rivet tool (or even a hammer and pinch) and some quality metal eyelets and you could probably stamp them in less than a half hour. Hopefully some Anon with more hands on understanding can pitch in, but I have the feeling that if you just immediately improved the hardware on certain brands then it would instantly raise them into a higher tier of quality
>>
>>18318280
