Before we get started, I'd just like to remind people that frenposting is welcome and encouraged here.
If you want to talk about watches, if you just want to post your watch, if you just want to chat about life, that's all cool here.

We do have a frenposting-free watch thread if that's more your speed. It's cool if it is.
But remember to leave them in peace and they'll leave us in peace.

Good fences make good neighbors.

A gentleman would never discuss such matters. That being said, after having it for a few weeks and wearing it around, it clearly gets attention in the way that my other watches (aside 2599.80) don't get. What should I expect? It's the most recognizable watch brand on the planet right now. It's turning into an interesting sociological experiment.

>>18343919
They're great watches, but you definitely should have Omega service it when you get it. When they first came out, the Piguet (if memory serves) movement was not the most reliable, but after a service it would be fine. It's one of the few 42mm Auto Speedies out there, and they made other variations that are just as nice.

No, but I've never really bought watches 'for others'. This is the first time that I've bought a watch that is coincidentally 'recognizable' to the average Joe...and that has had interesting ramifications. As I said, it's become an interesting sociological experiment, and continues to be so.

>>18344031
Love it! I have two 1861s as well, and my watchmaker reminds me that the movement is 'bullet-proof'. Wear it in good health, and enjoy the hell out of it! It's my GADA watch, by a long shot...just make sure you check the water resistance before taking it swimming.

18344162
Quite honestly I think it's because people don't know the Sea-Dweller references well. Much of the modern focus is on the Submariner, the GMT II, the Daytona, and the Day-Date. Everything else (Yachtmaster, Air-King, etc.) gets forgotten, but that's okay. Back in the day, I had intended to get a double-red Sea-Dweller, like my 1966 Speedy...but to be honest, I'm tired of being careful with my vintage watches. I wanted a watch I could wear 'for the purpose', if it's going to be a Rolex. That, and I wanted lume that worked, a bracelet that wasn't shit, etc. I still love the double-red Sea-Dweller...it'll always be a favorite in my heart (especially for the dial proportions between large triangle, date placement, and large indices). But honestly Fren....Modern 31xx movement which holds time as good as my 321, bracelet that is better than any of my Omega divers, bezel action that is superior to ANY bezel on earth, and deeper depth rating while having a case that is wearable and 'normal' to the uneducated observer? Why in Christ's name would I buy anything else? What watch are you wearing today, Fren?

>>18344358
>>18344362
I understand that, I really do. I have always been on the opposite side; I love layers of text on the dial telling me what my watch is capable of.
>see pic...so many lines. I almost bought the Chronograph version in addition just because of the text...lol

Where is it coming from? Also, I don't know the prices well...is it a moderate/good price? How is the condition?

Researching my Rollie was very difficult and stressful...far less fun than the Omegas. You need to know the capabilities of the current superclones, superclone movements, etc., even if you're buying from a trusted buyer. Have you tried one on? Will the prices continue to drop? So many questions to answer. Let us know what you decide!

True, but his posts can get a little stale, seeing as he literally only posts about how his own personal watches are the best (in his opinion).
If he does post about other watches, it's mostly to say that he doesn't like them, but you're perfectly free to wear a watch that's not the best.

But but but...I was asking helpful questions for the GMT Batgirl Anon...and I agreed with the AutoSpeedy Anon that it's a great watch....

I usually don't comment on watches when I don't know about them, don't have an opinion on them, or can't share data that might help the Anon. That's why I never really talk about Casio, non-Grand-Seiko, or microbrands. Everyone knows how I feel about Tudor, so I no longer mention that because there's no need, and since no one here asks about what to look for when buying a vintage speedy or how to assess a seller when buying Rolex, I have nothing much to add.

There are many posters around (which is originally why I wanted to unify the threads again) who have specific expertise which is valuable for someone wanting to buy a watch or wishing to know what to expect with one once it's bought. What is the real-world performance of a bog-standard Reverso? Does a modern Rolex Sub feel heavier on the wrist than a neo-vintage (1990s) sub? Are the old bracelets interchangeable on the new Speedy 3861 case? Stuff like that. Back in the day when I thought about getting a vintage Accutron Spaceview, I was asking questions of the AccutronChad who used to be around here, and he gave solid advice. Heck, when I mentioned back then how much I hated GS cases, a friendly Anon linked some literature that I could read regarding the design philosophy behind Seiko of that era, helping me to understand why they all look alike.

Anyway...I just think these thread should be more than just 'buy this watch', 'don't buy this watch', and 'your watch is shit'.

I mean, why not both?

I have a Forstner flat link for my 90s Seamaster and it's pretty nice.

Speedmaster on gator is a little iffy. It basically obliterates any pretense of sportyness the watch has.
I would go with Saffiano leather. It's still retains an upscale look (it's what Prada bags are made of, after all) but it's also quite tough and semi-waterproof.)

I want a simple, beater quartz dive watch thats under 38mm, but I dont like the 'Toy' look that a lot of seikos and citizens have. This 80s Heuer would be ideal but theyre all beat up and overpriced.

>>
>>18344598
We have witnessed your watch paraded endlessly—no fewer than a thousand times—but I resolved to appraise it with dispassionate rigor. My verdict? Most fail to comprehend the enigma before them.
This is no mere timepiece; it is a horological anomaly. I won’t trivialize it with platitudes about value—a term now so overused it’s rendered meaningless. Yet, undeniably, acquiring such a marvel for under $2000 borders on the absurd.
Behold: the pinnacle of autonomous precision. No GPS theatrics, no radio synchrony, no reliance on digital infrastructure—just you and atomic accuracy, free from the surveillance of state or corporate entities. Moreover, it offers a perpetual calendar, a complication typically reserved for far more extravagant creations.
Specifications aside, let us consider its finishing. The hands and markers exhibit a refinement rivaling Grand Seiko—flawless, knife-edged, entirely devoid of imperfections. But what does ‘GS-level’ denote? Unequivocally, it signifies that these elements surpass, under magnification, the craftsmanship of five-digit Swiss timepieces. Whether this truth provokes ire, skepticism, or astonishment, it remains incontrovertible. The dial, with its masterful manipulation of depth and striking sunburst effect, transcends all expectations.
And exclusivity? Allow me to elucidate:

> Minuscule production volume? Affirmed.
Geographically constrained? Indisputably.
Further rarity via limited editions? Evident.
As for the case—though not Zaratsu-polished, its distortion-free execution defies its price bracket.
Perfection, however, eludes it. It is overly thick, the movement aesthetically uninspired, and the bracelet a disservice to the dial’s grandeur. Yet, for $2000, these imperfections are astonishingly forgivable."
>>
If your watch has a ETA/Sellita movement, would it be worth it to send it back to the manufacturer for a service or is it better to just send it to a local watch repair person?
Is there any big benefit to sending to the manufacturer to justify the cost?
>>
>>18345084
?
>>
>>18345087
Depends on the nature of the repair job. If it’s a routine service, anyone can do it. If you need specific parts or want a case refinishing, it’s better to go to the manufacturer.

You don't need to be the richest man in the country, or have the most extensive horological knowledge to put together a perfect collection.

Frankenwatches are based. If your watch is 50-60 years old and still has original parts, then is it really a good thing? I'd rather have a Lotus Elan S2 with rebuild transmission and engine instead of having the same shit since the 60s in it. Same with mechanical watches.
Franken means it was serviced.

I feel like (my) marriage is like the sisyphus myth. You toil away trying to drive it forward, trying to master your wife and yourself, like rolling a heavy stone uphil, then inevitably every so often shit hits the fan and it rolls all the way back down and you mourn all your futile efforts and resources wasted on a rigged game.

I try to cope by telling myself that one day I will have enough resources so that marriage will be something that is just there but I dont really worry about or feel assymetrically invested in. Ideally it would be kind of like a subscription you cant get rid of but you accept your fate and the subscription fee is a drop in the ocean.

I dont know for how much longer I can keep lying to myself though.

The worst thing is that she is not even that attractive and her boobs are small with blown out nipples like pinky fingers. I regret my decision I would have wanted a taller more harmoniously built one with big juicy boobs with wide flat nipples in pristine condition

I could just be single and pay escorts with prime bodies like in the good old days before I married. Those were the glory days which I traded for the illusion of peace and respect that are supposed to come with marriage.

Every single euro cent that is assymetrically spent on a woman digs you into your goy cage deeper and deeper. Even if you do financially relatively well it is just a very very bad feeling to be in a relationship as it is a constant drain of finances, time, mental health etc. Single life cant be beat. Even for incels, just pay escorts occassionally when you feel the need and be a sovereign individual not tied down by the tentacles of a woman who we have known since genesis 3 to be the ruin of man
>>
>>18347347
I am humbled by your appreciation. I hope I will find strength. I have been looking for it for years and have not found. And realistically I am a much more assertive person than the average person so we have not even began to understand how fucked we really are as a group (married men)
>>
My downfall is that I always end up reverting my decision when reality starts to set in and I can see how my wife's life will fall apart completely. In a sense this is madness since its unlikely to fall back to below the level where I picked her up. The problem is that you cant throw away your cake and not have it fall on the floor. There is no glory without willingness to hurt others for your own gain. This is what is fundamentally wrong with the Christian world view and how it perpetuates weakness. It might be by design

In a world where Rolex screams status, Tudor whispers taste. A Rolex is the billboard of success, but Tudor? It’s the secret handshake of those who know better. You pay less, yet get a sibling forged in the same fires—Swiss precision, timeless design, and none of the "look-at-me" hysteria. A Tudor is a poet's watch; a Rolex, a salesman’s pitch. Why spend double to impress strangers when you could spend less and impress yourself?

That a grand seiko? Which one?
>>
>>18347607
This brings to mind a recent occasion when I donned my Grand Seiko for a professional gathering, anticipating it would remain inconspicuous, much like my imaginary acquaintances residing within my computer assured me it would. Ironically, on that very first day, a colleague—someone with whom I had never been closer than two arm's lengths and with whom discussions of horology or "fashionable matters" had never graced our conversations—remarked, “Is that a Grand Seiko?” Remarkably, he even referenced "Zaratsu polish," a phrase I had assumed was exclusive to online discourse.

I felt compelled to clarify that it was merely a 9F model, but instead, I mumbled about acquiring it online before deftly shifting the topic. Meanwhile, you all have thoroughly deceived me, leaving me anxious that others may perceive me as either extravagantly reckless with my finances (which I indeed am) or, conversely, as unreasonably well-compensated (which I am not).

In summary, disregard the advice from /fa/ or /r/watches/, for it seems that I alone have ever ventured beyond the confines of my home.
>>
>>18347399
How many Rolexes do you own?

Compare a Rolex bracelet to a Grand Seiko one or even to a mid-range like a Christopher Wart, then come back with your bullshit.
>>
>>18347612
lmfao the fragility
>>
>>18347613
You poorfags think there's no difference between your shitters and literal Rolexes, because you never owned a Rolex.

I've owned many watches, the differences you can actually feel between luxury and your shitters:
-you don't feel the rotor at all in a luxury watch
-you only have to adjust the time maybe every other months
-screw down crown
-the tapper on the bracelet
-micro adjustments so it fits perfectly
-no shitty pins but screws
-the transition between the bracelet and the case is perfect, gap is hidden
-the texture finish
...

If you think there's no difference, you're just coping.

A chinese brand could make a copy that's like 70%* as good as a Ferrari, would it the same than owning a Ferrari?

*trying to be nice here, the materials alone are not the same, the movement/engine us not the same.

Again good for you if you like your San Martin. If you could actually own a Rolex, you wouldn't feel the same tho.
>>
>>18347620
You seem to be the only one coping here, lmfao
>>
>>18347647

But hey, SMerarri is just the same than a Ferrari, bruh!
>>
I genuinely don't understand how people unironically argue grand seiko are as good or better than rolexes. Even in their marketing photos you can clearly see gaps between the bracelet endlinks and the case where the spring bars are visible. Just spending a gorrillion hours putting a different finish on every surface doesn't make a watch better quality.
>>
>>18347620
I agree with the idea you're trying to get across here, but more than half of the specific features you named are present in even the cheapest chinese shitters.

Rolexes will always be technically better. They just are, objectively. But there's a diminishing return to high end products where the product could cost 10x more than the knockoffs while only being 10-30% better. The question is whether or not that's worth it to you.

All this is nevermind the fact that rolex will hild its value if you decide to sell it. Nobody is giving you your money back on a used san martin, they may as well buy a new one.

The Cubitus, really, is a test. It's here to check your design litteracy. To a simpleton, it's just a big ugly square that kinda looks like a Nautilus (the only Patek he knows).
To the horologically educated, the multireferencial intertext of the watch is overwhelming and yet another proof of the genevoise maison. The curvature of the vertical edges is alchemical on several layers (squared circle, transformative Work of a prime element into its sublimized form and elevation, mutual acclimatation of opposites further seen in metal textures, the list could go on) ; the sizing is strict numerology (45 rpm, another circular reference ; hexagonal number pointing to the elegance in the simplicity of the square compared to the OTHER geometric watch with hexagons ; 45 in the enneagram points to the strength of individuality that will generate envy among those on the outside [non-owners])

Do I do it? Want a watch around that $1000 territory since I don't have anything decent now, I just wear a Casio or an Apple Watch all the time.
Would get both the bracelet and the leather so I could swap it depending on the occassion. Black watch face.

They got the best dials on the market only surpassed by "hyper" watches that cost 6 figures. Specifically the hands and markers.

Sure, they have great dials, but does that excuse the poor build quality? Seiko has never produced a decent bracelet in their history across any lineup or sister brand.

Back in November I ordered one of these Seiko limited Nano Universe cross promotion watches for my fiancee for christmas. It's like the normal womens Seiko Tank but it has a solar movement and I liked that because they don't have that in the normal production lineup and she likes solar powered watches. I've run into listings of it online since then and I'm finding it listed for nearly double what I paid for it just a month ago. How did that happen?

Why hate on Tudor? It’s like throwing shade at someone for owning a Lamborghini because they didn’t buy a Bugatti. Same vibe, less unnecessary flex

The difference is nobody "settles" for buying a Lamborghini because the Bugatti dealer refused to sell them a car. People absolutely settle for buying a Tudor because the Rolex dealer refused to sell them a Rolex. People buy a Lamborghini because they want a Lamborghini. People buy a Tudor because they can't get a Rolex. To further your car analogy, if you can't get an Audi R8 you'll settle for an Audi TT.

Is lange and sons hard to get if you have the coins?
>>
>>18348026
There are wait times for just about all Lange models because they only make like 5,000 watches per year, but it's a sequential list. No priority customers jumping the line, but you could still be waiting for a year or more for your watch to actually be made.

For the Odysseus, they've stopped taking orders because the queue is now as long as the number of watches they intend to make.
>>
>>18348026
I have no idea, not a brand I'm interested in.

>>18348034
Its the only brand that I consider worthy of upgrading for from random mall watches
>>
>>18348009
>people buy Tudor becuase they can't get a rolex
In some cases yes, in others absolutely not because Rolex doesn't make the same attractive designs and proportions they made 20 years ago (and others way older) which only Tudor is doing nowadays. Only a select few Rolex models are close to the "tool watch" heritage in their current forms

there is historical evidence suggesting that Adolf Hitler owned a gold watch made by **LeCoultre** (now Jaeger-LeCoultre). This watch reportedly had a monogrammed caseback with his initials "AH" and the Nazi swastika. The watch is believed to have been a gift, likely given to him during the 1930s or early 1940s.

The watch came into the spotlight when it was auctioned in 2022 by Alexander Historical Auctions. Despite significant controversy surrounding the sale, it fetched a substantial price but did not meet the auction house's high expectations. Critics argued that auctioning the item was insensitive, given its connection to Hitler and the atrocities of the Nazi regime.

It’s worth noting that information about Hitler's personal items is often speculative and based on limited documentation, as many of his possessions were looted or destroyed during and after World War II.

Tudor offers forms, details and designs that Rolex doesn't. They're entirely different things. Different geometries and different colors. You buy a triangle because you like triangles. You buy a square because you like squares.
>>
The watch believed to have belonged to Adolf Hitler was sold at auction for $1.1 million in July 2022. The auction, conducted by Alexander Historical Auctions in Maryland, drew significant controversy and criticism from various groups, including Jewish leaders, who opposed the sale of Nazi memorabilia. The auction house had estimated the watch's value between $2 million and $4 million, but the final sale price fell short of these expectations.

As I understand this watch was given to Hitler as a gift but it is not a watch that he personally wore day to day. He is known to have carried a pocket watch but the manufacturer and nature of the pocket watch is unknown.
