WATCH THREAD

If you post a Citizen or a Seiko in this thread, your mom will be raped by a pack of black gentlemen tonight.

The place to actually discuss watches, free of avatarfagging drama, including bittercelposting, pics of food or drinks, or long-ass stories about your lives.

>Your budget
>Preferred brand or manufacture
>Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot, etc
>Movement, e.g. automatic, hand-wound, quartz, etc

The Explorer is the perfect watch for a high IQ introvert guy.
It's a Rolex, so it's the safest and smartest choice for a luxury watch. And its design is very subdued so it doesn't draw too much attention.
>>

I wonder how many people have an Explorer.
Seems to be half the people in those /wt/ watch thread theads.

>>
>>18576228
>What if you're white instead?
As always, it’s hard mode for whites.

You have to have a Rolex, but it must be a vintage or neo-vintage piece; and you can’t simply buy a used watch, you had to have bought it new 20 years ago. Engraved rehauts (misaligned or otherwise) were the turning point for Rolex from durable watches for sensible men to blingy watches for people without taste, and possibly a surfeit of melanin.
>>
>>18576199
A budy of mine has a blue dial DJ with smooth bezel in 36mm. I think an anon here has one too. It's not as low-key as the Explorer but still very wearable.

>But wouldnt you want your Rolex to catch attention its a Rolex after all. I prefer a fluted bezel datejust
Rolex has always had two very opposite sides:
>the small and humble stainless steel sports watch (basically the Explorer, Oyster and Oysterdate, 34mm Air-King, the four-digit Datejusts, etc)
The Submariner and GMT-Master were historically evolutions of these watches, which later gave birth to the pro line.
>the luxury watch in precious metal: Day-Date, then the gold Daytona, the gold Submariner in the 1980s, and the Yacht-Master and Sky-Dweller in the 2000s.
Today the Datejust is a bit more "luxurious" because of its finishing (polished surfaces and sunray dial), but originally it was a discreet and versatile watch.
Personally I like both sides of Rolex but I have a soft spot for the more modest, fully brushed models. There’s something reassuring about wearing a discreet Rolex. In the current catalogue, the Explorer and the Oyster Perpetual are my favorite Rolexes. Both in 36 obviously.

With everything going on in the world, is now a good time to buy a Rolex or Patek because the value of cash is going to go down the shitter and diversifying it into valuable stuff can protect it, or is it a bad time to buy a Rolex or Patek because as the economy collapses the value of luxury items is going to hit the floor and thievery will be rampant?

Reposting from last thread in case someone interested in movements has any input.
As I continue my legitimate interest into Rolex because of the rootbeer, I have to say it's pretty impressive how bad the GMT-Master II is at keeping time considering the technology in it. Specifically:
>free sprung balance
>Breguet overcoil (!!!) very impressive, other brands make a big deal when they have that in a watch, consider most Lange watches have a flat hairspring
>Balance spring alloy is allegedly very good (better than nivarox).
All that to get ±4-6 seconds per day, as opposed to the advertised ±2 spd.
A lange with the 3 features mentioned above will be ±1spd.

Is the Seiko Presage Cocktail a decent watch for the proce?
>>
>>18576873
Looks like garbage you’d find in a pakistani stock store
>>
>>18576879
Nobody here is obsessed with pakistan, rajesh
>>
>>18576873
The watch is fine, but the bracelet is terrible.
If you spend a little bit on a nice saffiano leather strap that’s well coordinated with the dial color, the watch will look pretty decent.
>>
>>18576886
the bracelet is OK
it's not casio tier shit you can't wear
>>
>>18576894
The bracelet is ok in that it won’t fall apart, probably, and won’t rip the skin off your wrist, probably, but the issue is how a bracelet can ruin a watch.

Bracelets contribute a lot more to a watch’s looks than a strap does. So if the bracelet’s end links are sloppy, or if the finishing is not up to par with that of the case, it makes the whole thing seem sloppy.

Seiko is notorious for this because their bracelets are made in a separate factory and the designers of the watch just pick one from the catalog of products Seiko already makes. They’re always an afterthought.
>>
>>18576872
FINALLY!
Now that you've admitted this, we can discuss watches (ROLEX).
>>
>>18576936
Honestly it is only an issue when you get to Grand Seiko and the more expensive diver models of Presage because the standards are a lot higher for that price
The cocktail is only like 50% more expensive than an Orient Bambino, which is the bare minimum for an automatic
>>
>>18576938
What's your opinion on Rolex moving the EXPLORER logo up on the dial?
I think it looked a lot nicer on the older models, now it all combines into a disjointed block of text with various fonts, sizes and unequal line spacing.
>>
>>18576948
It's no use anon. There are supposed Rolex fans ITT but if you ask them any detailed questions about the watches they just ignore you. On paper Rolex seems like a pretty cool guy but even the anons ITT just like it because of the brand image.
>>
poorlex fags ruined this thread.
>>
You try to take an interest in the brand they're spamming about because you like the look of one of the watches and they have nothing to contribute, it's like they're fake fans. If I liked rolex as much as I like Lange, I'd always be mentioning things like the Breguet overcoil and cased accuracy tests.

>>
>>18576992
>watches and clothes
These mean different things to most watchfags. Because most watchfags are fat, manlets, old, or all of the above, fashionable clothes are unavailable to them. None of them over dress stylishly. Either too casual or in a laughable pastiche of what they thought menswear was in the early 1960s.
A nice watch, however, is something they can wear regardless of how often they never go to the gym.
The same goes with boots, hats, other accessories. You find the same posters in those threads as this one.
>>
>>18576991

Clearly you have a profilicity-mindset as opposed to a sincerity or authenticity-mindset. I actually have two yuge tattoos but they're not visible even in short sleeves because they're not intended for other people to see. They're for me, not others. My enjoyment of the world is between me and the world, not some faggot that needs to be "signaled to".
>>18576995
Yeah exactly. For the last month I've been wearing a Seiko I bought for around $350, and it has a very special meaning to me because my best friend bought the same one when we went to Japan. I don't expect anyone else to care unless they're specifically interested in watches, in which case they will enjoy the watch itself and not some measure of status that it bestows on me. And yes, it is incredible! The first analog display quartz chronograph movement!

Guys who “stretched themselves” a little on their purchase need to add an additional narrative layer to their watch ownership in order to justify an otherwise unwise purchase to themselves?
>Sure, the watch was expensive but the importance of this fine timepiece is far more valuable.
People who only buy watches they can afford, regardless of how expensive, buy the watch because it looks nice and they want a new watch. (If it’s really expensive they might put it on their homeowners insurance)

>>
>>18577029
Nah my mom let me pick the watch, and so I asked my friend who is a watch autist and even used to frequent these threads before he got fed up with the shitposting. He basically walked me through all the steel sports watches in the market and I picked one based entirely on looks and in-person feel. To this day I love it deeply and I wear it basically all the time. It turned out to be a pretty decent watch in terms of history/perception, but I chose it because I loved the case and dial. I got lucky because if I had fallen out of love with that watch, I probably wouldn't have developed such a deep interest in watches over time. Also my grandfather was a watchmaker himself so my mom is pretty thoughtful when it comes to watches and knew better than to force a shitter onto me.
>>
>>18577025
I hate it.
4th watch will be one of the following:
>Cartier Santos Dumont XL (Steel)
>JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual (Rose gold)
>ALS Richard Lange boutique edition
>Rolex Rootbeer GMT (two-tone)
I've tried on all except the rootbeer.
>>
>>18576936

>>
>>18577055
Watch out for rehaut misalignent on the rootbeer, it has been a barely contained scandal among the Rolex Owners' Club.
>>
>>18577029
I think your problem here is your mother, who has no taste or understanding for watches, bought you a shitter.

I agree that watches aren't the best gift idea because so much of getting a watch you like is personal taste. BUT if you know a lot about watches and the person you want to get a gift for also likes watches and you know what that person's taste in watches is like, you may be able to make an exception in that case. You just have to know what you're doing. A mom that knows jack shit about watches getting a watch for her son that doesn't wear a watch has no idea what she's doing and any watch sales person who doesn't know her son will not be able to help her.

The 38mm Speedmaster is horrendous and THICKER than the 42mm because of the AUTOMATIC movement with a DATE FUNCTION. It DOES NOT look cool.
>>
>>18577942
I don't like the date in the subdial.
It's one of the shitty versions of the Speedy that are usually for women (like the one with the bear on the minute hand, whatever it is).
>>
>>18577962
The thickness of the 38mm is such a show-stopper. It could be made much thinner if they used a manual movement and it would be a lot more proportional.
>>
>>18577966
Yeah. Also in my book an automatic chronograph with date screams SHITTER. Not Omega's fault, but it reminds me of the countless shit-tier chronograph with a Valjoux 7750.
>>
>>18577981
With smaller, thinner watches coming back in style, there’s a real opening for a brand like Longines to resurrect the 13ZN hand winding chronograph movement, similar to how Omega brought back the 321.
13ZN powered watches were between 34 and 38mm and between 12 and 14mm thick (which included the taller plexiglass crystals)

Something like that would be incredible, though it would probably sell like shit because the purist market is tiny and most of them would be waiting to buy them second hand.
>>
>>18577966
El primeros were thin and automatic even back in the 70's. I don't know what the fuck Omega buyers are thinking
>>
>>18578045
My guess is that most Omega buyers don’t even know Zenith is exists.
>>
>>18577942
I was going to say it's pretty cool until I saw the date.
>>
>>18578087
I was looking at Zenith' price on C24 a few weeks ago the hit they take is absolutely insane.
Picrel's MSRP is 8200 euros. You can find a few around 5500 euros on the grey market.
>>
>>18578098
Yeah, it’s brutal. I mean, most brands take pretty obscene hits. That said, those companies also tend to be real generous with discounts. Those gray market prices are usually pretty close to what you can get from an AD.

I don’t believe that most buyers really care about resale. Most don’t collect watches and don’t intend to ever sell their watch. The smarter buyers and collectors, though, definitely care. When a company makes a watch for the collectors out there like that Defy you posted, a high price is counterproductive.
>>
>>18578098
i like some Zenith models, but this looks like shite.
Also, the brand has zero street cred.
>>
>>18578109
Why would you put any value in what the street says about watches?
>>
>>18578109
It was not intended to be a mass market home run. It’s a re-creation of a model from the 1970s, and a surprisingly accurate one. It’s for hardcore Zenith fan(s).
