>Don't know if I'll ever wear it outside, I didn't expect it to be that sweet. The benzoin gives butterscotch sugary notes during the first few hours, it's more enjoyable after 5-6 hours. I'm not getting the patchouli at all behind the rose.
I can't overstate how much I enjoy wearing my vintage Portrait of a Lady with clean casual attire, even in daytime. Just jeans and a comfy sweater. I know most people probably dress it up in the evening but the vintage has really mellowed out. With two sprays on the wrist it's quite comfortable. The rose and sandalwood combined with the fruitiness has become reminiscent of a clean scent. I think the patchouli and incense is what has mellowed out the most making it more casual and relaxed.
>>
>>18612343
I hope Arquiste goes bankrupt. They have decent fragrances but their pricing and distribution is crap. Either they are intentionally trying to create exclusivity in an attempt to get bought out, or they are simply mismanaged and incompetent.

Kouros arrived today, opened the box with a knife while speeding, just as the frag masters intended.
Not decided on it yet desu, it's not straight to the trashcan tier at all, but not the ultimate masculine pinnacle either. For 20 mins there was that "animalic" smell I guess, which stings a little, then what remains is a soapy, honey-ish base. It doesn't smell like piss but after thinking it 95% smells like:
>entering a hot sauna with wood on the fire, in a roofed, humid pool.
No chlorine. It's potent, despite being an Edt, lasts and projects like a today's absolu.
>>18612103
Not sure, mine is probably a newer edition as it lines up with it being modern and less harsh.
>>18612377
My notes I took says: blue bar of soap, light smell blue/black berries, rated 4.3/5. If I remember it well, it has a joe average projection and lasting, for a 2025 edp. It's a nice scent not harsh, not faint, I did not regret buying a 40ml bottle.

Got
>R. Lauren Polo Green edt
>Versace L'Homme edt
>Azzaro pour Homme edt
all of them retro, not sure if they are actually 40 years old. Tried all three and they stink, like old alcohol, betadine, and ancient medicine. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that by default, the store is trusted so no dupes, arabs don't buy these anyway. I wasn't there in the 80s but I suppose all that unfiltered cigarettes, smokes and heavy smells had to be overpowered with something else..
So as a fan of light easy sporty smells this was a good chunk of money wasted

>Am I wrong?
No. Clean and fresh always works. Some people just rather not wear heavy, intense fragrances in summer because they can be overwhelming. None of that changes the fact that some fragrances just shine in certain weather. A green floral in spring, a zesty citrus in summer, a smoky leather for fall, and that weird animalic in winter. I'm sensitive to sweet scents and winter is the best time to hide them. Learning how each scent behaves is one of my favorite things since they vary so much and the frangrance sites are inaccurate.

>>
I am back after 8+ months of worming my way in into my national frag community.
There's nothing more pretentious than them, not even arts, because NOBODY is making frags, just yap reviewing, consuming and appreciating the branding and bottles rather than the scents.
Having read very little about chemistry i dunked on every debate i found myself into to the point of being throw literal perfumers to debunk me in one instance by a seething richfag but i "won" that one because i was right and the other guy agreed with my very basic premise.

I would like to apologize too for my trashbag attitude towards some anons back then but because i never used a name i will just carry on trying to be better, hope some of you aren't as clinically retarded as one year ago.
My next step is to buy aromachemicals little by little to try and learn more and hopefully make my dream scent one day, which i know what it will smell like but i don't know the cause of a specific note/accord i want to pull out.

>>18612308
The powdery citrus aspect of Chanel pour Monsieur might be to your liking but it's much more expensive and doesn't last as long, not even close.
GF is a masterpiece despite its reformulations, it's flatter but very cheap and lasts a lot. Have you tried Aramis?

>>18612515
You need a very specific set of circumstances to pull it out nowadays because back then the only people who did were men with yesfags and asskissers nearby, it was never a crowd-pleaser but a statement-maker with a great floral drydown.
Even its creator was surprised by its popularity, but there's "worst" offenders like Hugo Boss #1.

>very time consuming

>it also requires a dedication and consistency that barely anyone has
Skill issue.
The real problem is perfumery, at a low-scale, needs massive amounts of practical knowledge like knowing 1000+ aromachemicals and knowing how to combine them and there's little documentation for that, ironically one of the first good widespread documents about that was made by Hermes' Ellena less than 10 years ago.

The aldehydes+florals situate it firmly in the feminine realm and DHI/SWY are for homosexuals, so you are not saying anything controversial. I would also add D&G K, that really is cloyingly sweet, and some years ago One Million too.

Aventus is not really a chypre due to the lack of the chypre accord since a decade ago but stuff similar to the Morillas' reformulation can be Terenzi Orion or Cedrat Boise Intense, some arab clones also go very close to it.
AdG EDT is a classic but what alternative can be said, my favorite one was Essenza di Zegna, it's a lot similar but with an added tea/myrtle accord that makes it a bit darker and camphorous. Discontinued, so you might be better with Profumo dupes like Bentley Silverlake, a bit fresher, costs a lot less and still performs pretty solidly, 6 hours at the bare minimum.

Morillas has a book with 20 accords and all his work is just putting 3 to 5 of those in a bottle. He's not original at all but he can be identified very often in his work, aside from the dupes like Aventus or Man In Black.

Structuring and streamlining to the point of formulaic notebook creations is a bad thing you retard, it stops being designs and become recipes.

>then why complain no one is making their own frags if you're just gonna brush away the biggest obstacle
I expect more from people aside from mindless consumerism, in these threads plenty of anons knew their stuff and i think many initiated here can easily mix accords having the materials on hand and very basic knowledge of dilutions, that Ellena book gives a good hint for that.
The biggest obstacle is having materials to study. The hardest skill to master IMO is commercial batch making and material logistics, not even many "master" perfumers know that. But yielding 11lt of perfume to make a batch shouldn't be too hard, problem is the design process AND knowing materials to know what to design in the first place.

>>18612794
Yeah i agree i am a faggot character here but i behave myself IRL until they start telling you lies, only retards would think a perfume has Stardust and yet it happened and they insisted. The bridge from consuming to creating is steeply marked in perfumes, more so than stuff like video games, movies or music.

>>18612833
Probably, yeah. Depends on what you are smelling, most blue frags use cedar notes, most homo male frags use sandal+iris notes, old school used sandal+oakmoss, IES is used very often too.

I really don't understand all the faggy nonsense surrounding Kouros. I find it absolutely effortless to pull off, but I guess the direct answer to your question may be 'yes' if we are to judge by online comments.
This is one of the most majestic fragrances ever made, and wherever I've worn it, people seem to absolutely love it. It's probably one of the few fragrances I've ever been "complimented" on, annoyingly so; And though that really isn't something I've ever paid much attention to, with Kouros it's almost tiring.
>Yo, you smell amazing
<Yeah, I know, now please shut up as I've heard this 49 times today already
At any rate, this is one of the few fragrances I've found to be somewhat demanding, it really is a 'summer frag', it just doesn't feel right in a colder weather, this is a scent that benefits from the scorching summer heat where you can feel the full contrast between clean aldehycic lavender and sweaty musc.

And that is kind of lame imo as I've been wanting to wear Kouros for the past couple of weeks but it just doesn't feel right.

because it's the best vetiver around and the price is right
the four "accusations" are not reasons against guerlain vetiver but instead arguments for it

Cringe name for a boring frag.
Some mint during the first hour then very sweet and fruity. The vanilla + musk base makes it smell like an Initio frag. Also rum and resin.
Very good performance.

>>18613421
>So those notes are all on top of what's in the original EN?
id say so, yes, but there is not much of the "inkiness" in l'extreme. the amber/balsamic note is 70% of the scent or even more.

it is effectively amber frag for me. not sure if more refined as it is still a fairly simple frag. its just different and not damp earthy vetiver forward anymore

To my nose A l'Extreme is EN reinvented as an incense fragrance, they really missed their chance to name it "Encensoir". They share core dirty vetiver note, but while EN smells green, sharp and minimalist, Extreme is complex, warmer and resinous. It remains such into the drydown where it also gets a powdery undertone due to orris root.
If you get the chance try smelling Chanel's Sycomore as it is the closest thing to original Encre Noire, but more refined in my opinion.

>core dirty vetiver
The vetiver in Encre Noire is anything but dirty imo, I believe one of its main ingredients is vetiveryl acetate which is a highly refined derivative of vetiver oil, and while EN is sharp in a sense, it lacks that very dry green celery/hay side that's very apparent in Sultan Vetiver or Vetiver Java by Perris for example.
>complex, warmer and resinous
Does it have that churchy sweet-ish frankincese+myrrh accord found in Cardinal, Avignon, Casbah and such, or is it more of a dry woody frankincense like that in CDG 2MAN and the actual smell of burning frankincense by itself?
>try smelling Sycomore

I don't know, you could find it often at Ross and other discounters. Walmart has a tobacco-less version for 12 dollars. Quorum might be also more on your alley, also quite cheap to get.

>>18614159
About 32 if I really try. Once I find something I like I can't go back. Smelling it once or having it live only as a memory is not enough. Then again I'm intrigued even by the stuff I don't like so maybe I'm a weirdo. I just like unique smells.

10, no kidding.

you certainly made A choice
I like it, I like the whole quorum line
even though I'm not a fan of guaiac wood I still like it
>>
>>18614159
Three.
But that's hardly relevant because I'm not even happy with my current rotation and I've slowly but surely come to the realization that most of my frags I've bought in an attempt to get the same effect/mood/scent as more expensive frags and failed.
It's not even about arabshit and clones as I'm very happy with two arabshits and two clones I have, but some things, like Casbah and Ambre Nuit, simply have no alternative.

Ok, testing Catalyst again, it smells better in the air, projects well but it's just too much if you smell it up close. It's a strong spice with an analgesic scent, very aromatic. It's hard for me to resist smelling my skin up close but this will be a good exercise.
>>
I hope none of you try to judge frags based on putting your nose an inch from where you sprayed it. I know plenty of people do because they talk about Layton's medicinal edge when that is only smelled when you almost touch your nose to the spot. Perfumes aren't supposed to be smelled like that. They waft towards your nose and that is very different from sticking your nose to a wet spot.
>>
>>18614159
Basically this >>18614164, only 1 if i had what i want
Perhaps 2 to give a variation

>>18614374
Imagination is an old school powdery floral because Cavallier wanted to give tribute to that era, LV just hyped the shit out of it to con hypefags and dummies.
They basically rebottled old Guerlain frags for women and called it niche, sad!

>>18614198
Plastic watery notes, lilly weirdness at least my vintage bottle, perhaps it got damaged over the years as happens with blue frags.
Silver is the top choice for me, a bitter fresh woody citrus, like an italian lemonade tonic drink. Very underrated.

>that medicinal stuff about it is also pretty well known within frag communities.
Camphor was well-known before in perfumes and the current frag community in its majority are a bunch of jabronis who know nothing before the plandemic and are collectors in disguise rather than scent hobbyists, do not be discouraged.
You should not care what the cattle thinks, it is a phenomenon that perhaps might pass, every serious person knows it's the base notes with some of the heart ones that counts, not the initial sniff from the arm.
See how corrupted is the hobby nowadays, a fucking wiki page about it even exists

>Perfumes aren't supposed to be smelled like that.
That's how both perfumers and normal people test scents. Wearing and testing are two different things. I have some fragrances that I wouldn't be able to smell after their short projection dies down unless I stick my nose in them. I don't buy anything I don't like up close and I think that is true for most people.
>>
>>18614450
There is a world of difference between a perfumer smelling something and random person smelling something.
Like how both an artist and a random person can look at a painting and have a vastly different understanding and impression of it.
>>
>>18614467
You're overthinking it, everyone instinctually brings things closer to their nose to smell better. That's not how we wear perfumes but that is how we test them and get a better smell.
>>
>>18614469
Testing and wearing are different. Judging a perfume based on testing rather than wearing is stupid. That's how department stores sell their slop frags. They smell good from close-up but have a garbage sillage and disappear after 4 hours.
Counting a note you can only smell from very close up while the spot is still wet against a perfume is idiotic.

Mate I don't know if you ever had a conversation before but if a person says something and you reply to it as if you had something different to add only to end up agreeing with the initial claim then you just wasted the time of two people. You talking about begging for conversation is hilarious considering the fact that you decided to insert yourself without adding anything of substance.
