SOTD: Rose de Jamal

Not great. I expected rose and I got lavender.
It opens with a rose and a very woody cedar note, almost resinous. But then after 30 minutes the lavender takes over and blankets everything. To me it's an aromatic frag, not a rose one.
There's also mint but it was very discrete.

Recommend a cold weather frag, please and thank you (reposting from the previous thread because the only reply I got was "you don't like leather? get a strong leather frag").
I'm 29, I have a bleached buzzcut and I dress sharp.
Price range is anything up to €2/ml.
I have a number of warm and hot weather frags, favorites include Casbah, Light Blue Eau Intense/Discover Vulcano, Acqua di Sale and Sycomore.
The frags I've been using the most in the cold are a cheap supermarket copy of Terre d'Hermes and a reputable copy of Interlude Man, but none of them are really what I'm looking for; TdH is too sharp and citrusy and peppery in the cold and the iso-e super is too light and musky, while Interlude Man is way too ambery and rich in kitchen spices.
I don't dislike "thick" frags in general, but I dislike many "thick" notes and accords, namely vanilla, amber, cinnamon, chocolate, oud, leather, dates and ethyl maltole.
Then again, it depends on what they're blended with as I dislike Grand Soir with a passion but I don't mind the amber in Ambre Nuit, I couldn't be paid to go around wearing Angel but I like the overdoes of ethyl maltole in BR540, and I can't imagine why anyone would like Ombré Leather but I don't mind the (mild) leather accord in all of Memo's leather frags, so I'm open to trying out stuff as long as those notes/accords aren't the focus.

Thanks for the input, though aside from the above I haven't enjoyed a single SL fragrance, largely because of that sticky sweet lemon accord that's in the base of every frag from theirs, I don't mind sandalwood but I really didn't think anything of Egoiste, I don't feel L'instant de Guerlain is a cold weather frag because of the citrus and balsamic anise, and the same thing goes for Dior Homme Original and co. because of their airy and soft and unobtrusive characters.
I'll be sure to check out the rest when I get the chance, 1840 and 1899 do sound interesting.

I got a bottle of Dior Oud Ispahan. It is neither as explosive, animalic, nor masculine as I thought it would be. I sprayed twice on the inside of my elbows and that gives a nice projection. I have to really look for anything animalic to find it. It's more of an elegant mature lady, a man can pull it off but I don't see it as very casual. I get a big rose, not that it projects or overwhelms, but that is the core of the composition. I get some synthetic medicinal notes that give the fragrance elegance to my nose. There is a bit on honey and fruity sweetness but not much, and there is also some smokiness in there. I hope it grows on me, otherwise I would just use it to subtly add some elegance and sophistication to a night out.

If after a week or a month you're not still thinking about how crazy good quality it is, it's not worth it.
It feels like a higher quality Encre Noire, if that's not what you're very much into it's not worth it.

i think it falls more in the powdery category vs the lipsticky, but not overly so. it's very similar to Iris Malikhân if you've tried that one.
Iris Ebène was also really good when i tried it, but i wanted to finish my Velvet Iris bottle first.

on a different note, you could try Bottled Absolu or Layton. Layton has some vanilla, but it's not that noticeable for me

Longevity's average and sillage is a bit below average for me, though if you've tried and you're unsure I definitely don't think it's worth it, it's so comically overpriced and imo a frag should really wow you if you're to pay €3,33 per ml of juice.
It occasionally comes up on parfumo for nearly half the price and I think even that is a lot of money for it.

I tried a couple of drugstore fragrances today.
idk but they all have a similar smell, cant really tell what it is exactly, but with some exeptions, they all smell "cheap".
Pic related was the most dissapointing one, some anon often posted it and i thought it might be worth, but no, very boring and cheap smelling.
The David beckham ones were pleasant except the blue one, and 1 Bugatti was okay, but still wouldnt wear them.

Are there any sample sets for sale that are just individual notes? I don't actually know what tonka bean, vetiver, patchouli, etc. smell like on their own.
Obviously I can just go on ebay and buy vetiver oil but that's a huge bottle for actual mixing and a waste of money. I want just a sample set of all of the most common notes.

Fragrance oils but you won't have fruits and some other notes because those are synthetic aromas produced in lab. I use ChatGPT to recreate a specific profile based on the fragrance that I like, and if I want to tweak a little bit I just ask what to add or to remove. Don't expect for high-quality note evolution though, because you need specific lab grade essential and crystals for that.

Myslf le Parfum. Great scent, but not a big fan of the longevity. Maybe my bottle sat in the sun and got too hot or something, but once it fades all I smell is the pepper note with a hint of floral. I could’ve sworn the edp wasn’t this short lived. Best version I’ve smelled is the L’absolu, I have a 5ml of that I’ll test, hopefully it holds a little better. Altho I don’t like the idea of spending that much for a designer fragrance… maybe I’ll spring for the 5oz refill to get a better bang/buck.

I enjoy sampling inexpensive fragrances, but it can be disappointing for the most part. Only ones I’ve found so far that are halfway decent are two Duke Cannon edcs. Midway and Sawtooth. Never smelled that one you posted but it's a certain synthetic musk, probably. I call it "mall musk" because it's so ubiquitous. During the 2000s it was everywhere.
A&F Fierce probably wasn't the first one to use it but it's the fragrance I associate with it the most. Every cheapo brand has their own version, Hollister, Perry Ellis, Kenneth Cole etc.

It's good, not great. Mostly Haitian Vetiver rounded out with florals. It smells natural, sophisticated, distinctive, you would almost not encounter any one else wearing it. Decent projection 2-3 hours.

I happened to come across a tester in the mall and wore it today. Opening is the usual lipstick-y iris, now with a very refined leather. The leather in this is subtle, complemented by rose in the middle which comes off as silky. The overall impression is darker than DHI, but I won't be buying this in the near future as I find it too mature for my taste.

I think I know what you mean, it's probably the cheap base and manufacturing process. It was there in Beckham Classic Blue, in some Banderas, Cuba, in some Bugatti and such, stuff you buy under $40. Not exactly the smell itself is bad e.g Creed Centaurus was foul for me, but not low quality. In Classic Blue there was a "static", a plastic-y smell.
In Montblanc Explorer there is the Aventus similarity, with a loud grey plastic smell in the background like PVC tubes in 40c summer heat. It was different from the "cheap" smell, yet no less offensive.

I also got a bottle of Dior Purple Oud. At first sniff it screams familiar and a dead ringer for Oud Wood. As it settles it becomes more distinct, the saffron and woodiness kick up with a very attention grabbing smoke. I get the citrus but it's so integrated and nondescript, all I can say is that it's synthetic and punctuates the scent. At the end it gets really smoky and leathery reminiscent of Fahrenheit but with a gasoline smell that is not as overbearing. If it isn't obvious already I find it quite masculine. It projects very well at first and out of the Dior Ouds it's the only one that gets a positive reaction from others, being the most modern and familiar smelling. I like it, even if it's not the best fit for me because it's very brash and gallant. It can be used in different situations like going out or something more casual but it has to be clean and sharp. It would clash too much with something shabby and rustic.

Update on this: I'd bought a bottle on Saturday night but then realized it was probably a fake because everything about that ebay store looked vague and shady as hell, and the online store sharing a similar name had nothing to do with it.
I found a chain of physical stores in the same city with the same two bottles of Casbah at the same price and a name similar to the company name that was registered as owner of the ebay store, so just to be sure I sent them an e-mail to ask them whether they were affiliated with the ebay store, and in the meantime I asked the ebay seller to cancel the order, figuring it was a scam.

They don't have many in stock right now, but the Brut and Aventus ones were available and since I'm very familiar with both of them I thought it would be a fun project.
