Not really. It’s kind of in a leage of its own. I can only think of Amouage Royal Tobacco but that would be more of an upgrade to the dry, ambery tobacco side of Chergui.

BdC EDP does make sense for "old money" since it's a classy mature and understated sent, but AdG Profondo is just a really good modern man frag, very aromatic with aquatic tones, a little sweetness to round it up. I'd get the Parfum version instead of EDP even though a lot of people say thay're about the same, Parfum only needs 2 sprays to project like crazy and stays with you for many hours. TdH is a whole other story though, the bitter citric path is very interesting.

I'm in Europe, OP mentions notino for example, does that ever do sales? Should I wait for Black Friday or Christmas before buying something expensive?
>>
>>18735170
Since fragrances (and frag discounters) went mainstream the price difference discounters offer has gotten smaller and smaller from retail.

If you’re really that hard up for money you can wait till a major holiday to get a minutely larger bargain, maybe 5-10%, but generally speaking real, meaningful discounts are a thing of the past. Just buy whatever you want from the gray market venue of your choice.

When I first smelled Le Beau Narcisse about a month ago I thought it was disgusting. I didn’t understand what I was smelling. Women. I have a vinyl and record setup specifically because it adds a certain... tactile sense to your living space. It's a collection without it being Funkopop-tier, and every woman likes music. You throw in a few albums that everyone likes, and if it works out, you can buy an album that they like and add that to the collection, blah, blah, blah. It works. You aren't trying to get laid, you're trying to signal that you've got interests they can physically see and participate in. There's also the ritual of putting a vinyl on they like (or the pair of you like), and just doing whatever while that plays. It's romantic shit in the same way that they might have a fragrance they really like you to wear on a special night, or what not. Keep the pirating to movies and TV shows since you can just use a Plex server; which also shows a sort of handiness if you explain you can get anything (even that show/movie they can't get on streaming), and you can get it for free forever. This of course requires them to be into actually watching movies/TV shows that aren't The Real Housewives of Detroit. IDK, ask if she has a Letterboxd.

Of course. Different molecules have different weights, marketing sometimes separates the lighter molecules as "top notes" and the heavier ones as "mid notes" or "base notes". The denser molecules will stay closer to the skin, and the lighter ones will fly further. Your body heat evaporates them so weights matter a lot. I'm trying to smell fragrances in the air more and stop sticking my nose on my wrists.

Varanasi smells like sandalwood and incense?
>>
>>18735612
Funnily enough that's the second one I've sprayed on skin tonight and m8, it is certainly rather strange. Unique, pleasant, but also musty and abstract.

Can't remember if sandalwood is supposed to be in there, but i can sense next to none.

The incense is indeed there and it's really prominent. I get a good dose of agarwood, and this muskiness that almost makes me think of ancient Egyptian embalming oil or something of the sort.

I like it, but I really struggle to see where i would ever even wear it
>>
>>18735525
I have one for my strongest frags. Usually I like to spray in threes in sparse locations to minimize the projection ,especially in warm nights. They’re usually handy.

>>18735615
Well that’s close to what I would imagine. Varanasi is actually a place in India that’s why I thought of sandalwood. Judging from fragrantica it seems like a very oriental fragrance. I usually wear my orientals when I go to church.
>>18735574
If im not wrong direct sunlight is what destroys your fragrance. A bit of heat is okay as long as your bottle isn’t leaking, also humidity can make it go bad so don’t store them in bathrooms. My dad has a bottle of Polo Blue in his cabinet for decades and it smells just fine.

I don't know what (You) thought of it but I fucking hated it.
Based off the notes and vibes it seems like something I would enjoy but it just smells chemical to me and not even in a pleasant way. Like actual cleaning supplies, just sharp and astringent. Anytime I go to Sephora I put it on a tester strip to see if my nose has changed but so far its been a miss every time, it smells nothing like the listed notes. I get zero tobacco, vanilla, or rum.
I'm gonna bite the bullet and put it on skin next time I'm there.
>>
Is it reductive and potentially even harmful to compare one fragrance to another with minimum to zero attempt to describe what one is actually smelling?
Eg; Saying X perfume smells like Y perfume with extra raspberry instead of saying X perfume smells like *notes* and/or *place*
>>
>>18735849
Not really, sometimes that's just what it smells like. It's also helpful because it refers to a concrete sensory experience (eg Y perfume) with a modifier rather than something entirely subjective like a place. If you have smelled a lot of perfumes I actually find it more descriptive to compare similarities and differences. But there is a time and a place to describe fragrances as such, and a time to describe them in terms of notes, compositional qualities, or poetics.
>>

I used to buy designer but now just buy clones.
>>
>>18736365
Yup, I’m here, and it depends on a few things. First and foremost, what do you like? Secondly, how much are you willing to spend?

If you’re just looking for new experiences and money is no object, may as well buy the full sample set then just sample stuff based on descriptions that appeal to you. (I fully recognize this will not be the ideal choice for most people)

Barring the previous option, you kind of have to get the Forest Collection if you’re getting any discovery set from him as it’s a mix of all the stuff he’s famous for. If even that is too pricey (you’re gonna have a problem) but I could pull out a few specific recommendations, but you really should just get the whole thing.

If you can afford a little more AND you like gourmands, pick up his Winter discovery set, you’ll find there are some duplicates with the Forest set, but he has some well done sweet and/or fruity gourmands if you’re into that. His Glühwein and Christmas Wine were the first fruity frags I really enjoyed.

If instead you enjoy a good hay scent, pick up the Fall Collection. People talk about frags having a hay note, but I’ve never smelled anything that actually smells as real as his stuff.

Personally, I find his Spring and Summer collections to be the weakest, but that’s also personal bias against some of those styles. Juniperus, which is in the Spring Collection, I absolutely love.

Lastly, I will always do my best to warn people, the shirt (and skin) stain is a real thing. He distills a lot of materials himself and so they’re naturally highly colorized. It’s not ALL of his fragrances, but I would say roughly a third. Caravansary is the perfect example, it’s this highly complex, very evocative frag but will stain your skin a deep green color, it’s prob why he started selling lockets. Others like Greymist (the most realistic evergreen frag in existence) are perfectly clear.

Copped a bottle of Interlude Man from a local store and, along with some various samples, they gave a complimentary Akro discovery set. I've tried Smoke and Breathe from Akro previously, both really quite good (unfortunately Breathe isn't in the discovery set).

>Breathe - Reminds me a fair bit of AHS, has that cleanly fresh light aquatic mixed with a good clean citrus and lavender. Complete banger and highly recommend trying it

>Smoke - Very... Smoky. Voluminous cigar smoke is what it reminds me of, but leaning a bit more on being incensey.

Out of everything I've tried so far, it's actually one of my favourites. Has a definite raw leather accord, well rounded oakmoss, a lot of varied woody notes and something smoothly herbal (not bitter whatsoever) just underneath that uplifts it and gives it a pleasant freshness. Could be the seaweed. It very vaguely reminded me of Black Knight by Bianchi, which I really enjoy. It's fresher, not as dense and pungent. Has this L'Air vibe to it, as if Tauer was tasked with making a Bianchi fragrance. Overall very good first impressions

>>18736363
Funnily enough, I specifically avoided ordering a sample of #2, because the writeup seemed somewhat bland and it looked like one of the weaker entries. Conversely Nota di Viaggio #1 is really solid. It has this warm balsamic ambery aspect somewhat reminiscent of Le Lion/Ambre Sultan, but with a definite fresh/green spiciness.

Visited the local Sephora equivalent just now.
Gonna bring the blotters back, impressions from the stuff I tried sampling in store before going (noticeably) noseblind.

Sampled previously, resampled:
Fahrenheit EdT: Its more spicy/floral than anything in the top. Not "beastmode" like its reputation would suggest
Platinum Egoiste: Solid office scent but I just personally don't enjoy fougeres
BdC EdT: Ironically I've sampled the Parfum and Exclusif before, where I immediately felt the woody ambers right from the top. The EdT is actually straight up unashamedly "blue shower gel" in the top. I don't need this but I respect it.

New samples:
Le Male EdT: Spicier/sweeter take on a fougere than Platinum Egoiste. Not """"beastmode"""", but honestly that should be expected, being a Francis Kurdistan concoction instead of Bischslop. Actually not bad.
Oud Minerale: I like the salty-aquatic part, mixing with the mineral/rocky parts of something close to TdH. Might buy online on sale if I like the drydown once the weather cools down.
AHS Superleggera: "masculine fragrance", overpriced
Polo Red: somehow I'm sensing a slightly less sweet 1 Million in this. pls no
>>
SOTD Hacivat

Now on my skin, I get something like pineapple. I never sampled Aventus, but I somewhat feel the resemblance of Hacivat to something I often smell on other people, which is probably Aventus or its dupe. Anyway, Hacivat is nice and pleasant but rounded and a bit boring. I think that after a few months of testing samples, I want at least a little bit of spice/incense/aromatic herbs in my fragrance.

>Le Male EdT: Spicier/sweeter take on a fougere than Platinum Egoiste. Not """"beastmode"""", but honestly that should be expected, being a Francis Kurdistan concoction instead of Bischslop. Actually not bad.

Le Male is pretty misunderstood because of the fucking memebottle. It's really just a barbershop fougere with a big hit of vanilla in the base and some mint up top. The mid 90s brought back a lot of the old style barbershop scents after the chypres 80s.
It was pretty powerful in its earlier incarnations, though.
These days, frankly, it's totally office safe.

Not really. If you consider the price of the PB line, it really is embarrasing how little care does Ford put into their bottles, especially those dogshit caps. There are plenty of luxury/nice houses with much better quality of their bottles, caps, boxes etc.
I do agree about JPG, their bottles are horrendous and I'd never ever want to own one.

Among the worst bottles ever designed. I am actually thinking about dumping it because it's so fucking awful and I simply don't wear it enough. There are a few others I'd put on par with it, but they are far less prevalent in terms of market saturation.
>>
Speaking of dumping is anyone in western europe interested in trading something for a bottle of Tauer Phtaloblue? It's about 4/5 full and I want to get rid of it

On this topic, I believe that the most important thing in a fragrance is the quality of the composition, followed by the ingredients. The perfume bottle should be a functional object whose purpose is to preserve the fragrance as best as possible. However, a simple, well-executed design can be very beautiful.

>>18737105
Unironically I think it’s one of the best bottle designs. It has some personality but it’s not tacky. The lid/cap is a little funky and cheap feeling though.
>>
>>18737111
It's a 0/10 from me due to the storage. It is taller than most cabinets will accommodate, it's ridiculously wide for how tall it is due to the thinness (which sucks even more room), and the thinness isn't even uniform since its base is an oval.
>>
Khadlaj Island Dreams smells nice but it just reminds me of soap
>>
>>18737113
There’s just something very charming about the atypical shape and the frosted glass.
>>
>>18737115
Sure, but it doesn't make up for the storage issues. Most people either store it on its side, or have to set it somewhere unsafe like a counter top where it could be knocked off. Some people here have better places to put their frags, but this very thread mentions most people keep theirs in their clothes drawer or a shoebox. Fine places, but not great for this fucker.

>SOTD: Fugazzi - Passionfroudh

This shit is insane. Passion + ginger is very prominent on the opening, and dries down to a mango-oudh combo that has some crazy projection but still smells very nice. I don't get any of the black tea notes but the pepper bite comes through. I sprayed it before work at 9AM and at 4:00pm it's still going strong.

They included a 2ml Pomegranoudh that I'm excited to try now, poms are my favorite fruit.
>>
>>18737129
Sounds very nice but those names are fucking awful, literally Ashleigh tier
>>
>>18737131
>those names are fucking awful
I agree they're not the most creative, but it says what it does on the tin which I appreciate. Kind of undersells it a bit, if anything. I genuinely don't know if it's going to go away until I shower lol

>A beautiful blend of citrus, cardamom, green notes and oakmoss.
didnt the reformulation remove most of this?
>>
Has anyone tried Metal Lavender and Crystal Saffron from Matiere premiere?
>>
What the fuck does ambroxan smell like
>>
>>18737136
You know how some fragrances have a soft and smooth feeling? Ambroxan is the opposite
It's slightly sweet, airy and screechy but not in a bad way imo
>>
>>18737061
Whenever I see those bottles it reminds me of this quote from one of Gucci's former creative directors after hiring Tom Ford
>Maurizio [Gucci] always wanted everything to be round and brown, and Tom wanted to make it square and black.
Cool to see that expressed in the bottles too.
>>
>>18737136
To me it reminds me of the smell of a new magazine, with a salty edge. Or doctor's office latex gloves.
>>
>>18737138
>soft and smooth feeling
When I think soft and smooth I think white musk but I do not think that is the note you are trying to elicit
I do think I'm starting to smell the ambroxan though since you mentioned slightly sweet and airy
>>
>>18737061
This Anon is right. TF bottles are very basic, but instantly recognizable due to their shape. Most others are just blobs to me, or they don't have a strict, uniform design for all their products to be on brand. Many that do still suck shit. Creed's are bad. PdMs are bad. I know who they belong to at sight, but I think they look awful. The TF bottles do just enough to be recognizable without being overdesigned. Not easy to pull off.

When you go to frag stores, and especially niche frag stores, do you already know which frags you're going to try or do you ask for suggestions to the salespeople (provided you ever go out of the house)?
Store chains and big beauty retailers are filled with people who really don't care nor know anything much about frags, but with more niche stores I found a great deal of people who are at least trying to give you meaningful suggestions, so that's what I usually go for at this point.

On the topic of bottles, I too like the understated, thick and solid look of the YSL Vestiaire bottles, but if I had to pick just one design I'd go with the more intricate glasswork of Le Galion, both the updated bottles like pic related and the older, rounder ones.
>>
>>18737142
No I meant it's the opposite of soft and smooth, it's like if a smell could be jagged and coarse, yet still very airy and not substantial at all
Hard to describe

>>18737136
it's the MSG of fragrances

Interesting, I'll definitely be thinking about this next time I'm in a medical waiting room
>>18737146
Im pretty sure that they are the same use case so thats not that far off
>>18737145
>I meant it's the opposite of soft and smooth
Yeah I got that
>jagged and coarse
I wouldn't exactly call what I'm smelling now jagged or coarse, I guess I just gotta keep smelling more things

Thanks for the help anons, some of these notes are fucked up and have no real analogue and I appreciate yall trying to help me understand

Finally found something cheap I like, shame about the bottle being so ugly
>>
>>18737167
Does it really smell like "energy drink"
I assume it smells like monster, hence why the bottle looks like that.
Hows the tobacco note
>>
>>18737105
Not even close to the worst, m8. Get a better shelf or cabinet, or sit it at the top. So it can stand imposing, like a nipponese spire of yuzu reaching for the ceiling.
Sleek, elegant bottle, nostalgic. A mixture of sushi and baguette design sensibilities.
>>
>>18737134
I have tried Metal Lavender, and actually remember rather liking it. Very refreshing, sleek and not overwhelming. Pretty unique too, which is something I can't say for a lot of other Matieres.

Conversely I disliked Vanilla Powder, Santal Austral, and a few others that were just forgettable
>>
>>18737167
It's got that lynx body spray teenage boys first fragrance aesthetic

Is there a non aquatic analogue to Megamare? Potent ambery woods and hedione but without the calone and marine accord?

I enjoy a bottle with a good design, specially if the bottle sells the fragrance. It's the reason why I want a John Varvatos frag. Flashy bottles keep me away but I actually bought Ultra Male because I tried the frag and enjoyed it more than I care for the bottle. Would be interesting to see how it changes my perception of the frag if it was in a classy bottle.
>>18737093
Good simple design, I do enjoy bottles that remind me of alcoholic beverages, Encre Noire A L'Extreme reminds me a lot of a whiskey cup.
>>
>>18737236
>It's the reason why I want a John Varvatos frag.
I really want a bottle of Dark Rebel, even if it's d/c

>>
>>18737048
Absolutely. Butt. Blasted. Amouage, Xerjoff, Creed, and Nicolai, have the most tacky, tactless, and disgusting bottles. Westerners would instantly avoid those gaudy gold caps and Islamic convex shapes. It shows a tasteless lack of restraint. When you look at properly designed bottles: LV, Dior, Tom Ford, Chanel, Frederic Malle, you see a stoic, serene, masculine, and unassuming design. One that doesn't overdo the fragrance and becomes almost a blank canvas for it. It invites but doesn't impose. I would never buy a fragrance with a gold cap or gold tone anywhere. It would stand out like a sore thumb.

Choosing Artisan Blu instead of Pure or Acqua to illustrate your point on a nice bottle is fucking criminal.
Borderline makes me question your aesthetic judgement
>>
>>18737133
It's a soft fragrance; it's lost much of the moss, but you can still perceive it. The dry is quite lovely with the soft moss, and you can still detect a spicy citrus note. I prefer the Chanel to Eau Sauvage and Monsieur de Givenchy; these two have lost all their oakmoss. The Chanel is a delight for the chypre lover.

sounds nice. id sample it but stores dont carry it and i dont have nearly as much confidence in blind buying it as i did antaeus

It's quite good and inexpensive to boot

Shit you might've just put me onto something. On paper it sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Usually when I hear white whale it means its something elusive but I see that its in stock on the online retailers I use but I'm in america so I figure you must not be
