Literally 0 dealing with hambeasts as usually when they die, even if they die young their body is so fucked that serological testing shows they aren’t eligible for organ donation, maybe skin/bone but I don’t really have to get involved for that.Would highly recommend if you want to entirely avoid fatties, avoid wiping asses, and get to do more involved critical care style shit. Tons of people don’t even know the role exists and I’m at 170k a year. Definitely check it out if you don’t mind dealing with the dead, it’s fucking great

I had no hand in the donor ending up in the position they found themselves in, but with one donor we can save potentially 8 lives via organs and potentially help 75 more via tissue. The concept of pulling miracles out of tragedy is very compelling to me. In terms of how I personally deal with death, at risk of sounding edgy I've really never been bothered working with the dead, their problems are over and they may rest. I understand it's not a role for everyone, and not being able to do it is absolutely normal and I would never fault someone for it. I have a lot of empathy for your wife, her job is infinitely harder than mine and carries a much heavier sense of personal responsibility. It's really never a 'good' day for the ICU docs when I show up on their floor but the work is important and I make an effort to be as courteous and respectful as possible to the care team and the donor.
