How are we feeling about doing bench press variations on a Smith Machine? It always felt wonky and gay to me to use it but see so many people lately shill it. My gym doesn't always have the bench with the safeties available for pushing PRs on bench so I was thinking if it's actually a good substitution to do Smith Machine presses when you have no spotted or if it's actually a meme.

Works enough just don't go to heavy since you won't have full shoulder mobility. You can still get a decent workout with high enough reps.

It's okay for guillotine press as that motion is designed to be vertical. Standard BP is not good for that as you do not want the bar to move vertically.

Here is a crazy concept. You can do both. You can start with bench and move on to smith just to nuke the hell out of your chest and tris after fatigue starts to limit regular bench.
