>Advice for new runners
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week)
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple months
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans)

I was referring to specifically targeting the issues with the kinetic chain - the issues which ultimately lead to your plantar fasciitis.
So no SS, no bro split - focus on what's wrong. A 5 second search will give you pages and pages of exercises.

Anon I've gotten a hemorrhoid before I even started running and it got so bad that I would have to walk a certain way and sit down with a very uncomfortable posture, else I'd get this incredibly intense sting that would shoot from my asshole all over my limbs down to my fingertips and toes. It was that bad. I can't even begin to imagine running with an untreated hemorrhoid. Literally one wrong move and it felt like I was stabbed or got hit by lightning.
>>
5'4 fatty here.
Why is my every first km so horrible?
I'd get tired so easily, shin splints, the works, and this is even with warm ups.
I'd always have to take a 15-20min break during my first km because of this, but after that I can continuously do a run-walk for the rest of my 4km.
How do I not make my first km so fucking miserable? Is it something that I'll eventually adapt to as I lose more weight? I'm down to 90kg from 99kg.
>>
>>75455934
>increase volume and frequency for best results!

Ok who was gonna tell me taking 2-3 weeks off between stints of running gave the best results? How much more important is recovery than the actual training? I'm doing a week on (2-3 days of runs per week) then 2 or 3 weeks off and I'm gaining distance like crazy compared to when I ran a couple times every week.
>>
Did my 10k rooonn. Thankfully this year the snows have not come early which had meant extended possibilities for running.

imo you shouldn't worry about programming until you're doing >40km of sloooooow miles per week. all of your miles should be slow until you can run a 10k a few times a week no sweat. after that you can start thinking about pacing your short runs and adding sprints for speed training

cliftons were bad - not sure why people enjoy those
cielo x1 super fun and great shoe
mach 6 is also great - planning on running those into the ground

that all said - rebel v4 is my next shoe
>>
>>75457905
>rebel v4 is my next shoe
That's what I bought. I'm tempted to buy a second pair. They're just that good.

I actually liked the clifton 8 and those were my dailies for a while. Then I bought the bondi 8 and they were pretty trash. The foam was so firm and the shoes were so big it felt like running in clogs. I switched to the clifton 9 and the foam was firmer than the previous iteration. Still ok to run in but worse than the 8. I have a pair of Mach 6 that I almost never use but I think they're better than the current clifton and bondi (and cheaper). I feel like outside of super shoes Hoka is just kind of ass right now.
>>
>>75458011
bondis were definitely the wrong direction to go in if you're enjoying the rebel v4. the closest comparison to the rebel is the mach series. bondi's are like giga cushioned to the point of absurdity. hoka went through a weird period but i think they still have some quality. NB i've been hearing extremely good things about across the board. excited to try them.

Ran on a treadmill at the gym yesterday since it's been raining all week where I live. 1 mile easy for warmup then 3 miles threshold and another easy mile cool down.
My Garmin watch somehow knew exactly what I was doing on the treadmill even though it wasn't connected at all. The readings on the watch matched almost exactly with what the treadmill said. Crazy technology, I was expecting to have to manually input the distance the treadmill said after I was done.

Use the finger counting technique where you count on segments of your fingers. Put your thumb at the base of your pinky finger and then move it up a segment after each lap. After you get to the top of the pinky finger move on to the index finger. When you complete all the fingers then note that by moving your left thumb up on your left pinky finger and reset our right hand. If you count on the segments of the fingers you get up to 144, if you count on the segments if the thumb as well you get up to 225.

just count the laps in your head or get a smart watch that tracks the distance holy shit. you're logging onto 4chan to ask "how to count" motherfucker just count. if you miss a lap who cares. if you count an extra lap who cares. you're not going to the olympics. just fucking count the laps in your head holy shit
>>
>>75458430
Fuck you I want to get stronger, counting more laps is bad
>>
>>75458444
if your upper limit to getting stronger is that you can't count while you run in circles around a 130m track then you deserve everything that happens to you
>>
>>75457357

>>
>>75458454
It is not an upper limit, tard, but for data recording you can't have inaccurate information gathering
>>
>>75458513
you are incapable of counting i wouldn't be calling anyone else a tard. get a smart watch if you "need" data to improve (you don't) or just run literally anywhere else that isn't a miniscule track.

(this image is backwards from what I said though, when I do it I set the base of the pinky to be 1 and the top of the index to be 12. I also add in the thumb so that the top of the thumb is 15. In your case base 12 is probably better since then one hand is one mile).
>>
>>75458565
Do the back of your hand too for 24 on one hand.

But seriously just run somewhere else, because laps on a 130 m track sounds like a serial killer backstory.

No kidding that was subpar, 10km/h on a treadmill felt like a comfortable speed but slow irl so I started running too fast and carked it early. Also thought I emptied the bowels 30 mins before the roon but had much more afterwards. Hate the digestive system.

In good news, confirmed no accuracy issues with recording a track on Organic Maps on the phone with absolute time and distance precision (logs every 10 seconds), so no problems tracking stats without consooming a wrist botnet, and back pocket had zero jiggle so it felt good.

Hey anon. If it's the inside of your tibia, it could be any number of things - especially the connecting points between various leg muscles and your tibia. If it's painful even when resting/after walking and is a sharp localized pain when touched or used, it's likely bone-related. If it stops rather fast with rest and is relatively dull in the pain, it's most likely muscle tissue or tendon tissue that's been overloaded and damaged.

If it's the outside of your tibia, it could be your proximal tibialis anterior at its connection to the lateral condyle. This was long mistaken for bone-related MTSS, but some recent sportsmed advances cleared up that it's actually often the tibialis anterior's proximal connection acting up.

In either case, i would add some tibialis anterior exercises to your strength training regimen, and something to strengthen your soleus and/or flexor digitalis longus (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZhPw__uulw as an example).

I just have an audio book being read to me while I roon. Will runkeeper/runnerup track distance? Does it get weird if it's in a gym short pocket and thus is bouncing around?
>>
>>75462160
Forgot to add the most important part - give it some rest. This is the beginning of the cascade of events that can eventually turn into full-on fracture MTSS if you don't catch it early. Strength train once or twice a week and otherwise let your legs rest until pain is minimal (we tend to advice no more than a 2/10 on your pain scale.) Hope all this helps.
>>
>>75462165
They should track using the phone gps just fine. On some phones I would have problems getting runkeeper to lock location which is why I moved to runnerup.

Not sure where you live and how feasible this is for you but I had most of my running gear modified by a tailor in one way or another. I don't like running belts so I had a tailor shorten the depth of the pockets, change the lining of the pockets to some synthetic mesh and and add heavy duty zippers to almost all of my running shorts.
Same goes for my running backpacks, quivers, etc.
It's a small investment for a lot of comfort.

Week 13, day 3. 18 run, 1 walk, 18 run, 1 walk, 18 run. 2 miles in 16.58, 4 miles in 37.06, 10k in 60.10. At no point did I stop outside of the allotted program times like day 2, and so I had to find a slower groove, but there's something to be said for a steady pace. It's still a 6 MPH pace, and so I'm honestly happy with that. It's roughly miles 4 - 5.5 that I struggle with, and 5.5 - 6.2 I'm on a runner's high. I couldn't get the extra .2 miles in on mile 4 like day 2. I did that on the end of this run. 55 degrees today, and that could be why I'm slower but also feel less dizzy or sick. If I were better at keeping track of time, I would've sprinted to keep myself under 60, but oh well.

The rooning community is actually very nice and full of other fat chuds like myself. I was surprised at how many other people there are who run at 10 minute mile pace for slow runs and 8 minute mile pace for tempo. Looking at the Internet I was expecting everyone to be running 1:10 half marathons and 3 hour marathons max. I'm getting too old to take powershitting seriously so I think this is my new sport for good.

I'm a bum who started from only being able to run a quarter mile. There were days I failed. There was one day I threw up. 89 days to run a 10k and in less than an hour. I am fairly tall, but if I can improve then so can you. Check the OP for the couch to 5k. Be scared, but improve. The only thing stop your physical improvement is yourself.
>>75463163
I've had to run on the sidewalk like a schizo before because I slept too late to run my trail. Unless it's cold and raining or you're going straight to sleep after work, there's really no reason you can't keep the schedule. You don't need a gym, you just need to mark out a path. I'll keep keeping on, but now you. Stop getting mogged by a bum. You presumably have people who care about you or people who you want to care about you, and if you can't improve for yourself then improve for them.

As long as your muscles were engaged the entire time / under strain, I wouldn't say you've failed, but if you were legitimately walking and didn't have your legs under strain, then I agree with the other anon to do the week again. I didn't managed a 6 MPH pace until I was comfortably into the 5k to 10k program. The most important thing is your muscles are engaged the entire time even if you're slow. I have now hit an equilibrium where there are some posters that can run further than me, but that aren't running those same distances I can run faster than me. You'll hit your sweet spot.
>>
>>75455934
I solved the issue of constantly being injured or straining, and it's just a proper warm up. Or maybe treadmill is just different from outside and hurts my shit less. But I am pretty much walking 30m daily alongside another 15-30 of jogging. All slightly at an incline. Thinking another week and I should be able to jog almost every day. Sucks, weather is cooler now, but I can still do shit outside if I really want.
>>
My best 1 mile is 7:45 but my best 5k is 30:25, how do I fix this?
Apparently my 5k should be about 26:00 but there is no way I can run at that pace for more than 10-12 minutes
>>
How long before I roon should I eat something, and would consuming candy for simple carbohydrates beforehand be a good idea?
>>75467311
You just have to run longer to build up to it. My best 2 miles is 16.37, and all I've done is run for distance. There will just come a period where it clicks for you. Your legs won't be as heavy, and you won't be trying as hard for better results.
>>
>>75466077
>If you're white and eat meat, running in any above freezing temp in a T-shirt is no issue
Unlike Jorge, I guess your mom let's you be hardcore.

>>75466740
>She looks like a horror video game character
Hot.

>>75467459
>How long before I roon should I eat something,
For me it's about two hours after a meal consisting of veggies and meat. If you add bread, pastries or processed foods you can easily double that.
Good thing it's individual so you might not shit yourself if you have a pizza beforehand - like I did. You might be fine. Best to test it before the race.

>and would consuming candy for simple carbohydrates beforehand be a good idea?
You won't know until you test it. Unlike gels, which are usually maltodextrin, fructose or something along those lines, candy can have all kinds of stuff mixed in that might not agree with you, especially on longer runs.
I would recommend Snickers - lots of carbs, lots of protein when compared to other confectionery, it doesn't spike the blood insulin crazy fast and is fairly stable in a wide range of temperatures.
You could also make your own gels - you can find maltodextrin and/or fructose in shops and you can add flavoring, salt (so Na+Cl) and whatever else you want.
>>
>>75467459
I guess that's kind of the conclusion I've come to. I can at least jog 2-3 miles at 5-5.5mph and it feels easy now, couldn't do that a few months back.
Also my legs usually feel fine, it's my chest/lungs that always limit me
>>
>>75467624
Oh yeah, you can also experiment with dried fruit (raisins, apricots, etc.)
The problem could be all the fiber they have which might, and I emphasize might, cause you some gastrointestinal grief.
Once again, you won't know unless you try it.
>>
>>75465921

What would you do if your knee started hurting at the end of the run and during long walks or squats but not enough to really be an injury?
I run around 30km total a week, with two longer runs (13-14km) and one shorter. My pace is pretty slow, abouting 5:35-5:50.
Obviously I'll decrease the mileage and the speed but by how much? Can I run 5? Or 10? Should I immediately stop when feeling some pain or is it okay to go on it it's light? Can I continue with pistol squats?

Back into rooning. 5 x 12km per week in morning before work. Feeling good. Z2 pace 5:45/km and VO2 max on the garmin up to 50, noice.

Gym at weekend with non-imaginary gf, just usual squat and bench shit.

Monday roon, fucking freezing, feel rotten rest of the day.

Run this morning, 6:15/km pace to stay in Z2, VO2 down to 48 (I know I know, numbers mean nothing)

there's so many external factors the watch can't see: how you slept, whether you drank too much on the weekend, that guy that honked you and pissed you off, the weather, the route, that extra slice of pizza etc, etc. pic related, the two dips are hectic workweeks where my training suffered. it's meaningless in the grand scheme though
>>
>>75474066
Thanks fren. Alot of people at work complaining about having cold and the likes so maybe something like that.

60 VO2, how??

Training for a job and was recommended to come in with a minimum 53 VO2 and a 45 min 10k

Do/can nipples calcify over time with running or should I start taping or lubing my nips up?
>>

The reason you call hardened skin calluses is due to skin going under the same calcification process bone does, the only difference is that the make up and properties of skin cells is different enough to produce a different result, hence why we use the word callus.

What is the difference between a “tempo run” and a “threshold run”? How am I supposed to figure out a pace for all the different drill toes without going to a gay sportsmed?

I used to just get out and run, but there’s so much shit now about heart rate and blood lactate that I don’t want to be training sub-optimally when I only have a decade left at most.
>>
>>75475622
you might get different definitions from different people but for me tempo is a general term for a fast pace. like you could do a 5k tempo or a 10 mile tempo which would be a very different paces. basically a hard run but below race effort.

threshold is a specific pace based on your fitness. once you go past your threshold pace the lactate starts to build.
>>
>>75462621
Week 14, day 1. 22 run, 1 walk, 22 run. 4 miles in 40.08. The rest of the time I ran back to my car, passed my car, ran back passed my car, and then to my car. Fairly sure it was over an additional half a mile. Marker on the trail partway back to the car says 3/4ths a mile, so it may have been more than that. Not sure where that marker starts. Had a side stich in my left side nearly the entire time. Bad, slow run. Pain, discomfort, mehness.
>>
>>75475622
ignore heart rate. heart rate zones are a meme and measuring intensity using heart rate is obviously more complicated than just percent of your max heart rate. "Threshold run" "tempo run" and special workouts like "fartlek" were memes invented by coaches to sell programs and make a career out of telling people how to do something that should be obvious. Science doesn't know anything about the body and even it were to plug up to a bunch of machines and measure your "lactate threshold" you would have to be retarded to actually try using that data to inform your training.
>>
Going to give this zone 2 thing a try. This is already the farthest I've ever ran, I've done 3 5ks and another 3 mile run, otherwise most have been 1 mile-2.5 miles up until now.
Slow as fuck, had to walk more than I would have liked on the second half, especially on the hills. Still, it's kind of refreshing ending a run feeling like I could still do more, and it's a large distance PR already.
>>
Played some sport on Sunday for the first time in years and the DOMS has almost killed me. Added 30 s / km to my easy pace today, and the only saving grace is that I didn't have to bail out entirely. Lesson learned and I am going to stick to rooning.

You are supposed to invest in something that can track your vitals so you, or some application, can crunch the data and present you with the answers.
Or you can ignore all that as you are probably not advanced enough for that to really matter.

run until you sleep better, and then keep running until it feels like you can jog forever. then and only then will your boners return. also take vitamin d in the winter.

Got a weird sore throat and had to skip day 3, week 3 of Bt10k, although the other days were rather easy and I didnt struggle. Should I restart the week anyway or move on to week 4? Im 100% convinced I could do week 4. Running with a pace of roughly 6m 05S~/km, went 8.5km last roon.

Also fellow rooners who have garmin watches. Is it worth it? with black friday, I feel the need to consoome and abandon my fitbit for something better and they're all on sale. Which should I get, IF I get?

Picture related. That's Epix 2 with the titanium casing. I think they are great investment, both on and off the track. The wealth of data they collect, the monitoring, the maps and navigation (if you are into trail running) - it's all top notch.
Unless you have some particular needs (or have broken two Forerunners 645's like myself) you don't have to spend all that much - get something from the 200 series.
Another less costly option are Coros watches. I had Apex for some time, and while the watch itself and the software were fine and usable, it's all a lot better done on Garmin. They are just a lot more pleasant to use. They probably have improved in the last couple of years. I know that Kilian Jornet has been shilling them.
>>
>>75476642
Yeah. Get a forerunner 965 or a Fenix 8 if you’re a richfag, they make training more convenient and you’re more likely to run with the gamification of making numbers on your watch go up
