>Advice for new runners
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week)
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple months
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans)

I'm tired of being a fat rooner.
>>
>>75706821
Well, practice your fork put-downs. Or if you are gluttonous like me, eat only high nutrient foods to your heart's content but do 3 hours of zone 1 per day and brute force that weight loss.
>>
>>75706821

If you're a fat rooner you either haven't run for long enough or you eat like crap. I've melted 5 lbs in like 3 weeks (and I'm a healthy weight) purely by barely running and eating clean. It's not that hard. Breakfast, eggs, milk, maybe a slice of good toast. Lunch, several cans of sardines in veggies. Dinner, pot raost (I have a steer in the freezer) with baked potatoes and more veggies. Heck, I can have home made bread and whole milk whenever I want and I still loose weight when I run for like 3 hours a week and hit the gym. You must be eating trash. Find some veggies man. Geez.

when i'm doing sports hernia rehab exercises that I found on YT... are they supposed to hurt a little? Does that mean they're working?
>>
>>75706975
Nta but I used to have a deficiency in my diet caused by excessive exercise because I would eat 5000+ calories every day and feel hungry all the time. I even switched to carnivore for a while, but still ended up eating 4+ pounds of meat a day easily and not getting lean.
Now things are fine and I am cutting fat easily but it's not necessarily that simple.

After a 4-5 months break from running, I started running again 2 months ago. My best run was 14 miles @ 8 min/mile, and my longest run was 18.6 miles.
The recovery has not been as fast as I expected, the first month I was running only 5ks, and only now am I running 10ks with almost 8 min/mile. I hope I will be strong enough to become better than I was, and keep on improving.

That's good to hear. Running probably does the most for me, too. I was surprised though that I actually picked up hobbies I hated in the past. Never like cycling but after destroying my knee I had to pick it up. Now I am actually liking it.
Anyway, proper daily structure and sports are probably the best things to do during affective disorders.

I bought a Polar H9 (Red line) HR monitor becacuse I wasn't sure how accurate my Huawei GT5 Pro watch (Green line) was and here's the HR charts from my first run with both.
I either put too much or too little water on the strap before starting, or maybe it just hadn't settled in the right spot until 10 mins in where it seems to start reflecting reality. After that, they're basically the same.

Should I just save $50 and return the H9 through Amazon?

I'm not a great runner but I'm training for my first marathon while working full time and just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of each session.

Nice. I was aming for a 1hr 10k yesterday since 6min/km is my goal marathon time but I saw my average pace at 5:50 after 2k and spent the rest of the run working on getting it down to 5:30.
First time I've run a 10k with any kind of pace goal in the last couple of years. 5 mins from my old PB but still felt good
>>
>>75708092
that up and down swing bullshit can also be the bluetooth connection fucking up. I get that sometimes between the gym equipment and the H10 I got, however I save the session on the actual H10 not via the app in my phone and when I download off the H10 and check the trend it is fine without the chop. maybe try that, if you give a fuck.
>>
>>75708098
I'll give it a few more tries and keep comparing data. There's no storage on the H9 so if the connections fucked, the data's lost. Sensor's supposed to be pretty good though.
Best case is that I get some more runs where the data is functionally identical and I can send the montitor back and know my watch is pretty accurate.

I started by running 0.2 miles. My goal is 1 mile in 10 minutes. I don't see why I would want to run more than a mile. My last run was 0.56 miles in 7 minutes.

keep at it, plenty of reasons to run more than a mile
>>
>>75708431
>I don't see why I would want to run more than a mile.
Longer run = conditions your body for running = body is able to run shorter distances (like the mile) faster
>>

i did and i was wrong to disregard it for nearly two years during which symptoms worsened. the spot turned thicker and became too painful. i recommend you deny all silly oitments from dermatologist until prescribed cryosurgical treatment. one visit was probably enough but i insisted for another one because i prefered to overdo it just to make sure. you only disinfect with octenidine twice a day. it isnt even adviced to take a break but it took it easier than usual.

3.02 miles in 28:16. Definitely a recovery run especially with the nicer climate. Quads sore from yesterday's sprint. Got the Chinese food cravings out of the way, back to the cut.

>>75708431
A mile a day is great, then you get to finishing it in less than 8 minutes. I actually plan on only doing one mile a day once I 'finish' cutting. Until then, I'm running 3 miles daily.

>>75708370
>>75708539
Appreciate the input, it would be nice to not have these damn things. Personally I've become mindful of where I strike each step and use my inner feet on recovery runs. I'm going slow anyways.
>>
Started integrating interval roons into my schedule. Shit's better than I expected, overall my pace was about the same during my tempo roons.
How do I maximize gains if I wanna shave off a couple of seconds from my pace? Run faster or cut down on recovery time? I did a 1:1 ratio.

>>
>>75709238
>between 300 and 500 miles
Shit no wonder my feet hurt
>>
>>75709238
Lots of factors affect it. I know bigger people tend to go through a daily trainer every 300miles, I switch out around 500 miles (140lbs). super shoes tend to breakdown faster. And just looking at the treads and wear pattern can signal the need for a new shoe.
>>
Just did my 12 mile long roon outside. It snowed last night. It was sleeting most of the time. My feet were soaked by mile 3, there was zero traction unless I ran in the middle of the road which I could only do part of the time.
I think I understand what it was like for POWs to be marched through Poland in the winter of 1945
>>
>>75709516
>wear pattern
To expand on this: the foam midsole loses cushioning over time as it gets compressed, eventually going "flat." You can observe this if you take a new shoe, squeeze the sole and watch the midsole foam crinkle and crease under compression, then spring back to beautiful smoothness. You'll know a shoe is flat when those wrinkles and creases are present all the time without any squeezing.
>>
We get so many 'what should I wear' questions, thoughts on adding something like this to the OP?
https://dressmyrun.com/

It all seems pretty common sense to me but maybe it would save us from trying to guess what the asker actually means by "cold".

I hate rooning in winter. I've got a choice between rooning on roads that range from slippery enough to give shitty friction to legbreakingly icy and trails where I can get good friction on snow and leaves but am in danger of tripping over roots hidden beneath the snow.
>>
>>75707604

>>75713096
They are, I just don't go running on a sidewalk between buildings and shit.
>>
>>75713096
Out where I live the roads and some sidewalks are salted, but the plowed snow makes the road really narrow and covers the entire shoulder. And the smaller rural roads don’t get done that frequently or thoroughly. I don’t fuck around with roads under those conditions, plenty of nice trails out here.
>>

I want to get into marathon running so badly but I’m afraid of over-exerting my heart. I’ve dabbled in some cardio but not so much where I’m breathing heavily. Even then I feel my heart doing it’s stupid heart murmurs, and I’m barely breaking a sweat.

These heart murmurs/ heart palpitations mostly occur when I’m compressing my chest in tight positions. For example, sleeping on my side or slouching. I’m only 27 years old... High sodium intake diet, the results of drinking too much caffeine (1.5 litres of black coffee everyday for a year), or is it because I got the double dose of covid vaccine?

Too scared to do cardio, but I really want to start. I’m on the higher end of the healthy BMI but want to get slim again, except I’m nervous about my heart. I guess I’ll have to get it checked out at the doctors but the healthcare in my country sucks and they don’t care about your concerns, they chalk it up to you being a hypochondriac.
>>
>>75713961
Easiest way is to start following a training plan, something that includes speed runs and long runs to make you practice different paces and up your weekly mileage.
>>
>>75713961
Get familiar with how your body feels at different speeds. Warm quads? Slight burn in quads? Unbearable burn from waist down? Physically unable to continue?

You need to get that shit checked out for real instead of asking randos on the internet. It could easily be shit diet+deconditioned but you need to rule out any structural or congenital cause and no one can check that over the internet.

Very easy morning run. It was absolutely freezing with -7°C but I was warmed up after the first km. Luckily there wasn't any snow or ice. Overall beautiful scenery, clear sky with a few purple clouds from the sunrise. I didn't have my phone with me so I couldn't take a picture :(

That sounds very nice. I'm aboot to go on a roon with a mix of wet slush / ive on the ground so I just hope I don't slip.

Winter rooning could be comfy if the weather stayed even halfway consistent but it doesn't so it freezes thaws and freezes a lot. Last year we had a pretty consistently snowy / cold winter at least.

I run better with someone else, a friend. Because if I ran alone the first sign of tiredness then I stop. When running with my friend I don't stop, we agree to do 5 miles or whatever and we do it. I don't want to be the first person to throw in the towel, neither does he. I will admit though, some of the roons are getting tough and I think he is better than me and I might be the first person to fail a roon. Been thinking about running in secret behind his back on off days to try and catch up.

Chilled out long run. Went about 100% better than last week's (gels had me nauseous by 3/4 of the way through and the last few kilometers were suffering), with no significant suffering or, weirdly enough, hunger pangs despite no gels. I just blast caffeine. It's probably not healthy, but I take 200mg every 4 hours of work and 200mg for both the workout and run. As an ex-powershitter I used to take 400mg+ alone for lifting so this is relatively low for me.

You probably made them wet. Women LOVE when you give them very little attention, when they're already trying to flirt with you. Were they hot? If so, then I'm 100% confident in saying that, they're used to guys fawning over them, so when you don't give them the time of day, well, now you seem unattainable, above them, and every single straight woman in the world wants a man who's above them in some way. Next time you see them, that's when you make your move. Good luck.
>>
>>75721460
1. Build up mileage to 50+ miles/week consistently through easy zone troon running (if you're talented perhaps less, if not talented perhaps more)
2. After settling into mileage, introduce hard runs, starting with 1x/week, then 2x/week, perhaps eventually 3x/week. This is where you get injured, so be chill with them, don't ego run.
3. Race/Time trial every few months to see how you are progressing.
4. Don't get injured. Do some coocling or other gay cross-training if you feel sick or you feel shitty/beat up all the time.
5. Patience, time required.

/fit/ + /roon/ anons, what's your program?

I'm barely an intermediate rooner, had to give up weightlifting 1yr+ ago then picked it back up 3 months ago. Here's my schedule since:
Every 3 days
Day 1: Weightlifting, full upper body, 2hrs in the gym
Day 2 & 3: 1hr of running @ Zone 4, around 160-170bpm for me, usually means 5-5:30min/km (8-9min/mile)

I wish I could go to the gym twice a day, so I can get in cardio every day and weightlifting and split it so I don't have to run a full upper body split, but unfortunately I don't have the time.

I feel like I'm stagnating in both because of this program, like both are pulling each other down. What do I do?

I've been running very casually for the past year or so. Basically only ever socially and in good weather. However I'm now planning on running a half marathon in July which means adhering to a more regular training schedule.

I have just discovered that my shoes (Brooks Ghost 15) are absolutely useless in the wet. The slightest amount of moisture on the ground makes walking difficult and running impossible - I only ever run on pavements and roads, but it feels like I'm running on ice. It's a consistent problem because I've tested 3 different pairs.

I have a pair of Adidas ultraboost that I wear casually and their grip is a lot better (I can run in the rain no problems) even though the sole is almost completely worn through. Only problem is my feet and ankles are absolutely fucked after running in them. I did some reading and it seems like Adidas Continental soles and Puma Pumagrip soles solve my problem - specific recommendations are for the Adidas Boston 12s and Puma Velocity nitros. However I have a wide foot and I can't find wide sizing for either option in Australia.

Any thoughts on grippy shoes available in a wide fit, or ways to fix the grip on my Ghost 15s

This was a proper trail run.
You slip on ice in the shade, you slip on mud in the sun, certain trail sections turned into obstacle courses due to fallen trees, no trail markings, hell, no trail whatsoever due to snow at certain points - basically everything that makes running fun. I had to run the last third in dark without any lamp and it was glorious, minus me running into a branch at face level.
Fun.

You can't do anything about it so get a new pair.
It could be that the soles have simply worn out, which again means replacing them. Since you are running on roads, pretty much anything with a more aggressive thread would do the job. Puma and Adidas never really caught on like some other brands with runners so I would go with Asics, NB or something similar.

It's not the tread though - it seems to be the actual rubber compound that's not grippy. My newest pair of Ghosts have intact tread, albeit slightly worn down. They're completely fine on dry surfaces.

My ultraboosts are 3 years old and a huge chunk of the outsole have been completely worn through to the midsole. Despite that, they still have more traction in the wet than the Ghosts.

Seems like I'll need to get a new shoe regardless of what the underlying problem is anyway

Almost all marathon training is at a pretty low heart rate. Most of the training is just running slow and getting used to being on your feet for 3-5 hours

While I am thinking about that, how does running in the end of spring/summer work? Temps will average 12'C-35'C (53F-95'F) and it can have high humidity too. I only started running in Autumn when it got cold so I wear a tshirt and hoodie for now. I guess I won't need the hoodie in summer. I might need to buy some long sleeve shirts suitable for running and sunscreen so I don't burn.

I managed to get it pretty consistent with just shifting it slighty to one side and more water. But I'll test licking it because I constant;ly walk outside holding it and then realise it's still dry.

>>
When does running "more" enter injury territory? I run 3 times a week and cover about 20 km. I'm gonna start running 4 times a week where I will run twice in 2 days instead of there being a 1 day rest inbetween. I think I can do this now but maybe later I'll want to run 5 times a week and while my runs have gone great and without issue. I don't want to end up injuring myself and having down time. So far I have been making progress slowly and increasing everything slowly but surely I will get to a point where I probably shouldn't risk going further, how do I know where that is?
>>
>>75725101

>>75727091
Depends on the person. Keep doing small increases, recover well, do your strength work and listen to your body.
You are only doing 20km now so you could safely double that if done over along period. 40km is a solid week of running but it's something anyone should be able to do injury free if they build up to it slowly and are recovering well and not overtraining
>>
>>75726851

>>
>>75727154
>40km is a solid week
How do you do this then, 4x10km per week? I can run 6-7km right now, not at fast pace. I don't think I can run 10km yet. So if I build up to 40km a week then I need to increase the distance of my runs that way I am still running 3 or 4 times a week and not 5 or 6 to cover 40km.

Don't get overwhelmed thinking about distances you might be running in the future, just take your current distance and keep increasing it by 10% each week until you're running as much as you want. Instead of a bunch of identical runs people usually do a mix of easy, fast, and long runs like >>75725149

>>75727229
Increase the mileage means increasing the distance run, which is probably going to take you more time. If you run 1k one week, next week run 1.1k, then 1.21k, then 1.3k, etc. Do it at whatever time and pace you need to reach the goal distance.

/fit/ running threads are far better than reddit running pages.

Reddit is full of people overcomplicated beginner running. The guy cant do a 30 minute 5k, he doesn't need periodization, weekly long runs, sprint days etc.

Every month there are like 3 variations of c25k posted that all call c25k tainted by racism or sexism. At least once a month someone posts the anime c25k and calls it pedophilia.

They all push people to do 5k as their starting runs, mate this guys longest run in the last 5 years are when the airfyer dings and his pizza rolls are ready! Him running 250m would be a struggle.

Pushing people new to Running into buying $200 series and 500 dollars worth of gear is common.

Incredibly submediocre people who think their 25 minute 5k park run is a massive achievement getting their dicks sucked constantly. They are around 25 and started running when they were in middle school or something. And want people to pay them for programming

/fit/ has continued to get more knowledgeable every year as people are encouraged to argue about things we don't have moderators shut down threads and redirect to some Wiki that has been updated in a decade and it's filled with information that is completely wrong

lol why is that word triggering anons. Maybe my zones are wrong but I run ~7 miles in 1hr with some discomfort, ran a half-marathon just shy of 2hrs and a 10k in 45m best time. I run 30+ miles per week and ~150 per month. Although I never attempted one, I could probably easily finish a marathon in 4hrs and a 5k in 20m if I were to guess. Not to mention all that with sub 1 year of training.
Most people ITT and on running subreddits and forums and such post two digit min/mi paces all the time, I'm using that as reference.
How is it not above average / intermediate? Get real.

>>75727442
Yep. Just run. There is no one-size-fits-all. Some people want to marathon, some people just want to keep to one mile. Shoe recs don't matter until you start putting on some actual mileage, just about any sporty sneaker will get you going for a start.

Decide whether you want to be a runner who also lifts or a weightlifter who also runs. I am the latter and my current 3-day split is lift upper body, lift lower body, roon, then repeat, then weekly rest day on Sunday. In the past I've tried splits that aimed to maximize both hard lifting and hard cardio but that eventually just held me back in both areas too.

I would not personally do two days of back-to-back hour long zone 4 cardio sessions. Your body probably needs a day to recover-- consider adjusting the intensity to maybe two hard running days per week, with the other days being easier zone 2 days. I would also consider adding leg lifts to your split as this would help both with upper body lifting and running. You could do some of the zone 2 cardio on the lifting days after the weights are done, e.g. 60-90 minutes of lifting followed by 30 minutes of easy jogging.
>>
>>75728150
Thanks anon. I think my zones are wrong, I've had really uncomfortable runs in the past but I wouldn't say I do that every 2/3 days. Maybe it's more like upper zone 3. Or if this helps more, on a discomfort scale 1-10 where 10 is that feeling you get when you sprint and are out of oxygen, my runs start at around a 5/10 and end usually at an around 7/10.

As for lower body training, I have a torn ACL. Next month I'm getting a surgeon to look at it and hopefully I'm getting the surgery soon. I'll start training legs after that. How is running after leg day? Isn't it harder due to the soreness?
>>
>>75728185
you should be using LTHR% for ur heartrate zones which puts the vast majority of people in zone 2 around 150hbpm and below

strongly recommend doing some base building at sub 150hbpm. it will feel very slow but it's worth it.

Consider that you can already run fast (in other words, you can run 3:30/min literally right now) you just can't hold the pace because ur endurance is bad. Building endurance will help you more.

ur basically just doing tempo/threshold days over and over, which is fine, it's just not going to build your endurance very fast.

I run after leg day without issue but it took me a while to build up to it (similarly come from a weightlifting background). sometimes i do leg day and then run immediately - it's like preexhausting your legs and emulates the back end of a longer run.
>>
>>75728185
I haven't had any issues running the day after leg day, but I have been lifting legs for years and am only doing gentler runs. If I were to start adding in hard runs I would probably do them right after lifting legs on the same day, and if running the next day only doing a very gentle recovery pace.
>>
>>75726649

Yeah, that must explain why I start every run fast and end it slow. I guess this is a very normal complaint but I don't really like the slow runs, it feels very unathletic and boring. Would doing it on a fitness bike while watching something be the same? (I don't see why not in theory, but Idk).
>>
>>75728547
rowing is cooler/more athletic movement than cycling. there are options that will carry over more to running like elliptical/incline walk/stairclimber.
But yes, just go easy and chill, not hard enough to mess up your hard runs.
>>
>>75728547
it's all mindset. every run has a purpose, and the purpose is never to stroke your ego. if you really want to improve and not faff about indefinitely.

if you're bored running inside then go outside. running outside is unironically incredible in any kind of weather as long as you have the right gear.
