Who is /fat/ for?
For diligent dieters who are working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros) or LoseIt (great for both).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

So how do I start lifting? I don't really have money for a gym and my friends told me that until I get my form correct and have a spotter/safety net that I should avoid lifting. What are some safe ways to lift by yourself? I've just about hit my current goal of 250 and I want to be proactive on getting fit.

>my friends told me that until I get my form correct and have a spotter/safety net that I should avoid lifting
You do not need to be a powerlifter, anyone can start on the machines or with dumbbells after watching a few tutorials
Find someone reselling a dumbbell set for cheap online
But if you can afford that then basic gym memberships for $10 a month are also not uncommon unless you live in a tiny town, that's the equivalent of one fast food meal not purchased per month which probably used to be many times a week for most fats

>goal of 250
>>
>>75719056
Im 350, thats 100 lbs lost. Seems like a reasonable and realistic goal. I have no delusion that I'll ever be thin and attractive, but I can at least be normal levels of fat.
>>
>>75719056
I've been trying to get fit for a while and I kept failing. What I used to think was that you would just work out till you where tired every day like in the movies and so I kept getting discouraged since I couldn't really do anything and specially not for long. Then I learned what reps and sets where and not only did it make a lot more sense to break up everything in to chunks, but to also do it for other things as well. Instead of just purely focusing on getting to the average healthy weight or more, I've broken it up in to chunks as well. I was 310, so I set the goal to 250, which once I complete that to continue too 200 and so forth with each goal trying to add new things or pushing myself a bit more. I also did this for other parts of my life such as with chores and hobbies/skills I want to learn or do. It's been working out for me so much better and actually making progress.

God speed anon. Once you hit 250, you can focus on hitting 200, then 180, until you're at a healthy weight for your height.

Keep it up I believe in you
>>

>but I can at least be normal levels of fat.
the hell does this even mean? i used to weight 390 and i'm currently 248. you're still going to be fat. you might as well work towards a healthy weight for whatever it is at your height

i know this doesn't answer your question because i too am looking for an answer to it, but i'm trying to understand this mindset
>>
Literally can't cut. My body seems to have two modes. Adequately fuelled, where all work outs feel amazing, recovery feels amazing, I regularly hit PR's, I never get sick and my mood is great or inadequately fuelled where I mooch around the gym missing sets, missing reps, failing to complete my workouts, where I don't sleep, I get sick, I get depressed etc. I'm trying to ride this line where I eat enough calories and I eat enough good nutritious food, but I'm somehow going to magically recomp, just nothing seems to work. I'm at a point where I'd rather give up all exercise and just sleep my way through weight loss. Just fast most of the time and forget trying to make the gym work for me. I'm 290lb @ 6'2" so I could probably do with losing 60-70lb as well.

was at the hospital today for my tummy tuck or whatever its called in english, made the appointment, insurance is gonna cover it im excited yet also giga scared cuz following that up im gonna have the breast lift too so im gonna be out of the gym for a while. it will be worth it though, i can feel it
they gave me the choice between a "normal" or "classic" tummy tuck and a T-cut where more of the skin on the upper abs will get removed too but there will be an extra scar on my stomach so idk.
i asked the surgeon (young, fit woman) if that skin above my stomach below my chest isnt just fat and water and she said "you barely have any fat on you at this point" with a concerning look kek. i feel so flabby, watery and disgusting and she telling me this makes me think im fucking myself mentally a bit too much.
will post progress pics at some point, will def have before/after pics after the surgeries too

first surgery will be in 1.5 months already which makes me nervous AF and my mind keeps racing

When guys can't perform at the gym as he described it'd usually due to lack of carbs. I see a lot of fatties eating mostly just protien and incidentally getting carbs and fats, something like 70%p,15%c,15%f@1200kcals because they get this idea that protien good, carbs/fats bad and bigger deficit is always better. When really it should be something like 40%p,30%c,30%f@1800kcals if they actually want to perform.

Figure out your TDEE, aim to eat at TDEE - 500 calories each day.
Take supplements. You'd be surprised how much missing a few vitamins or micronutrients can ruin your shit. Daily multivitamin, Fish oil/Omega-3 capsules, Vitamin D. To get started.
Get your macros sorted out. Eat enough proteins, split the rest between fat and carbs. Lean toward fat if it helps you stick to eating less, lean toward carbs if you need more energy throughout the day.
Make sure you sleep enough every night.
That's it. Just try that for a while.

That body fat calculator from the Navy is total dogshit. Fat people have fatter necks and do better than semi fat bros that are athletic. I was in the Navy and was a heavy lifter, and good at running. I squatted probably 600 and benched over 400. Have a 17 inch neck and a 42 inch waist. Says I'm 34% BF. Had a true fatty get measure had the same waist but a much fatter neck. Lower BF%. It's total shit. Also hips aren't factored in. They need to add chest measurements. I had a 42 inch waist but a 52 inch chest. The fat dude had a 42 inch waist but a 36 inch chest. Get calipers or do it in water bros, that test is absolute nigger tier.
>>

Feels bad, I really wanted to, tried my best to lose enough but just didn't have enough time.
He's super cool about it and I told him as soon as I can travel I'm going to come visit but it would have been special to do it on his birthday. Wish I didn't let everyone down. Sometimes it feels like everyone in my life would be happier if I never existed.

Why, is it like a physical activity thing, are you so huge you can't fly at all?

I've missed out on friend group things because of my weight, couldn't go to a friend's wedding in Greece because I would not be able to be constantly walking everywhere (not to mention the price of a second seat for an international plane ticket). They also went on hiking and camping trips without ever telling me, don't blame them because it's obvious I would not be able to come. I'm just about fit enough to start joining in those things now, just keep going, you can always make it, it should fuel you not demoralize you

It's not that I don't want to it's that I literally can't. I'm 408 as of today. Started trying to lose last year was 515 at my highest. It's a lot of progress but I'm still almost as immobile, I can barely walk around my apartment building without feeling like a heart attack is coming on. He lives about 5 hours away, it would be unbearably uncomfortable making that trip and then standing around for hours with fancy strangers all night.
It's probably for the best, he hangs out with rich people and I look like a beast. I wouldn't mix well with that crowd.
I'm not giving up, still doing my best and I really want to go visit him but it's just not going to happen soon enough to make his party in march. Just feels bad because he sent me an invitation anyways just in case and now I'll have to turn it down.
>>

I'm sure if I had a gun to my head I could do it but it would be so painful I just can't see it happening. I wouldn't want to make my friend feel bad if I had to bail early. It's going to be an all night thing with tons of physical activities. Most of it I would have to sit and watch anyways and sitting in normal chairs isn't something I can do right now.

>>
>>75719596
>so I'm trying to supplement my protein.
the rule of thumb is 1g per lb. of lean body mass, but realistically if you are at least .7g per lb that is sufficient. There is almost no benefit of eating more protein as far as muscle growth or even must maintenance. Increasing volume and intensity of your lifts might help you maintain or even grow muscle if you are still in the midst of a heavy cut (more than 800) or so calories per day deficit.

Body weight without fat. So if you want to be 180lb at 13% bodyfat 156.6lb lean body mass.

Honestly, I recommend doing whatever you can to get a gym membership. Adjustable dumbbells are like $400 and they're the least expensive way to workout at home with weights.

About the safety stuff, don't worry too much about it for now, because for one, you're not nearly strong enough and I recommend mostly doing machine stuff at the start because squatting for example wouldn't be easy when you are this heavy.

On that note, allow me to suggest Hero bakery products as an alternative.
Their stuff actually tastes like the real thing. My wife is diabetic and we've tried many shitty brands of keto breads over the years, ranging from eggy breads that have to be kept in the fridge to fraudulent breads that lied about being low carb, and all kinds of edible cardboard in between.
In contrast, those breads keep like bread, and have the taste and texture of bread. That's it. That's the selling point. Also, negligible blood sugar level response, a lot of soluble fiber, and they use olive oil.
>>
>>75720583
That's also like 4x the price. Why does getting 30g of fiber a day have to be so hard?

Ive stopped tracking my fiber since I make sure I get some more fat in my diet. First time cutting I avoided cheese and peanut butter, this time They are both in and pooping fine. A bit of melted cheese or some peanut butter on my granola and things move along much better. I also try and consume any of the edible fat on my meats. Especially corned beef or steak. Im not keto or anything weird like that, just eat everything.

If you can do that more power to you. I can't, its like three heaping tablespoons to hit 30g and its clumpy and thick, and tastes terrible. The texure alone is awful, like drinking cold oatmeal, but the flavor is even worse.

I can eat two carb balance tortillas, thats something I can see myself doing everyday. It's not something I would indulge upon on my own, but its much better than subjecting myself to a glass of psyllium husk everyday.

>Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a thick gel-like substance in the stomach. It is broken down by bacteria in the large intestine and provides some calories. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and passes through the gastrointestinal tract relatively intact and, therefore, is not a source of calories.

The reason it doesn't taste like sawdust shavings is because it's soluble fiber, therefore it contains roughly 2 calories per gram

I eat plenty of vegetables, its just you need 1500g of Brussels Sprouts or 1200g of Broccoli or 473g of artichokes to hit 30g of fiber daily. I'm not eating that fucking much and neither do you.
>>

Assuming you only eat them for the fiber and it's your primary source of fiber you would have to eat 2 of them for 208kcals. That's a lot better than getting it from artichokes at 371kcals. Granted the artichokes get you more nutrients and will fill you up more, but the sheer amount you'd need to consume every day is daunting.

So two teaspoons in 8oz of water for 3g of fiber, you need to take 10 servings of this daily to get the recommended 30g of fiber, but it only recommends you take 3 servings a day so unless you ignore the label, you'd still need to add another 21g of fiber from some other sources. Metamucil is pretty much the same deal, its uses psyllium husk instead of wheat dextrin like Benefiber they just flavor it to mask how awful it usually tastes.

Still think those tortillas win as a fiber source. 30g of fiber a day is fucking absurd as a daily recommend value, I bet almost no one gets this shit regularly.

>Day 2 of 0 food challenge
Yesterday I did eat a banana, and the day before that I ate a wafer. I guess I eased myself into this. At any rate, I need a workout I can do for a starvation regiment. Hmmmm... I'm thinking of just training the same thing I have been for a while now. I'm Dark Souls pull-up death challenge anon. Been getting a gut again, and I'm actually gonna try starvation dieting for once. I'm 6 ft ~205-210lbs right now. In other words, I train a lot of Army pull ups and lat pulldowns, as well as running. I've got 2x25lb dumbells and 2x7lb dumbells. One exercise I like is holding the dumbell with my feet as I do the pull up.

>how are my pullups
Pullups don't really help you lose weight, but they do allow you to handle your weight more effectively. I've been improving in form.

>how about running
I noticed that I was getting faster, but not really losing weight. I'm always hungry after running, so I gorge like a hungry wolf that just caught a caribou. Aside from that, there's a thread right now about jogging:
>>75722078
Basically, jogging puts stress on your joints. If you're fat/heavy, you're likelier to injure yourself jogging. Jogging on concrete and pushing yourself also causes injury. I stand on my feet all day at work now, so my legs are usually too exhausted to fucking run, which is kinda the main reason I'm fat. I'll still eat despite the fact that I haven't run in days, or even weeks. Recently, I've been on a routine to try and reclaim the high scores I set as a kid, so 5 min mile and 20 min 5k. Not too fast, but enough. There's another issue: running for speed and distance isn't the exact same as running for fat burn.

At any rate, do you have any workout recommendations for someone who's doing a 7 day starvation diet?

hey /fat/, wanna hear something sad?
last couple of years I got kinda fat while my family are all a reasonable weight. I probably gained a good 20-25 lbs. the family all got together for christmas and of course my grandpa wanted to take pictures of the cousins
we all get in front of the xmas tree and grandpa snaps a couple pictures. we crowd around him to take a look at the pics. the cousins get their eyefulls and leave the room, and I'm the last one to get a good look
my grandpa is getting older and his mind is starting to go a bit which means he's got way less of a filter. so he says, kind of to me and kind of to nobody at all
>anon looks overweight!

my dear old nearly-demented grandpa called me fat. what a fuckin wake up call
so I've been exercising daily and eating at a ~500 calorie deficit. scale said 189 today so I lost 2 lbs since the beginning of the year. that's within the margin of error for water wight but I'll take it. 170lbs is the goal
I ain't as fat as some of the fatties ITT but when old people start calling you fat you know it's time for a change

>>
>>75722556
You do need sugar to survive, kek. A little bit is important for mental energy. If you understood brain chemistry, you'd know that you'd still want to drink your electrolytes if you want to progress on your gains during your fast. Otherwise, your body will crap out on you out in the wilderness jogging trail, as you collapse.

>fat shaming doesn't work!!1!1
Only on the most retarded, the rest of us see it for the wakeup call it is. My sister works in a restaurant and ger supervisor had shared she had a slip and told a woman getting two large burgers and two orders of fries "Just for you? The bulk must be early." And she felt bad but she started seeing the woman in their gym and she's lost weight. Success. A wakeup call. But I'm sure plenty of others would've just gotten extremely upset and complained and kept eating.
>>
>>75722566

>>
>why is sugar important
There's a point where your muscles are too exhausted to continue. Happens if you're like, a marathon runner or a distance hiker. This happens in any endurance sport. Eating a little bit of sugar, even if it's not many calories, can restore your muscles using your body's metabolism. Basically, if you're fasting, putting honey in your tea is what you should be doing.

>but anon, it's not real fasting if you also had a banana on one day and a wafer on another
I'm trying to do the healthiest thing here. For health, a hundred or two hundred calories a day can provide essential nutrients that I need to continue my workouts and job duties. Sorry, you do need sugar! If you can't eat it, then drink it.

>but no food no water diets
I don't need to drop weight categories so why would I do that right now?
>>
>>75722619
Dude, if you're out on a distance hike, some of the best things to have are like sugar packets, honey packets, and peanut butter. Even a tiny bit can revive you after overexertion. Eating a little bit of sugar during a strenuous workout makes you recover. It literally regenerates HP.
>>
>>75722555
>checked
That's because your BMI is still really high. Losing fat for real, like you, is hard. You gotta do all sorts of things. Stick to a workout regime, stop going to fast food, and try eating once a week only until you're skinny. Then when you are skinny, ensure you do your calorie burning exercise.
>>
>>75722629
Then perhaps you shouldn't call your diet "0 food". It is more like "I eat a candy or banana whenever my brain screams >WHERE IS MUH SUGAR, I NEED MY HIT"

Your body converts your fat to glucose and you are intervening with this process. But sure, make excuses for your wafer.
>>
>>75722612
>"Just for you? The bulk must be early."

fat shaming absolutely works as long as you're not a touchy faggot. sometimes you just need someone to tell you the hard truth but you gotta accept it you know?
good on that girl, I hope she loses the weight
>>
>>75722685
Yeah I know, you burn fat faster if you don't eat the candy or the wafer, but you'll also have less energy during your workouts, which means you burn less fat during workouts, and you build less muscle. As I said, I'm easing my way into 0 food. Realistically, it's day 2. I guess, my goal is 0 food, but my goal is also my workout goal. I wanna be able to still do 10 pull ups of good form by the end. During the fast, I'll be monitoring my maxes to see my progress/decline. I believe sugar helps me maintain physical power as well.

Try wearing a pair of trousers you'd written off because your legs got crushed by them. You might be shocked. You tend to lose weight from the arms and legs before your trunk. Also take shirtless pictures every week along with your weigh in. You're losing weight gradually and your mind isn't going to register all the small gradual changes without any frame of reference. This is the same with people getting fat, their brain doesn't register they're getting fat until someone else points it out.

i went out with a friend to get some food some years back. we sat down in the restaurant. i was just getting over a cold, so i just ordered a bowl of soup. the waitress said, "that's it?? are you sure i can't get you a double cheeseburger or something?" that was a wake up call (of course i lost a bunch of weight, felt good about myself, and gained most of it back, because this is the life of a fatty)

It doesn't take years, if you have a good workout+diet, you can lose weight in a matter of weeks. If you can just mentally tolerate being hungry all the time, while still having the discipline to continue your gym routine.
>>
>>75722901

>>

>>75722900
If this occurred in America where tipping culture is a thing, there is no way she was fat shaming you. One offending a customer jeopardizes their tip and two getting you to order more food increases her tip. But it is good that you took that as a reason to change. I know in America it is part of the culture, but sitting down for lunch and eating a double cheeseburger is too large of a meal for anyone who doesn't do a physically demanding job where they are burning 3,500 calories plus a day.

I'm not so retarded that I think I should be 290lb. Also to maintain this weight with my current activity I need to eat close to 4,000kcal a day which is actually not enjoyable for me. The problem is if I drop down to instinctive eating I'll get roughly 2,000kcal and yes I prioritise protein and probably don't get enough carbs. Trying to exist like that is hell with my current activity so I'd rather just starve myself and stay inactive because it is actually easier to do that than deal with the gym being the absolute worst. Obviously the answer is to have a more gentle cut with more carbs, but yeah, that also kinda sucks because it takes forever and I'll be working my ass off to spin wheels for the next three years.
>>
>>75722921
I do OMAD and do it at dinner. Basically I drink a lot of black coffee in the morning and early afternoon. I also eat a very big portion of salad at dinner. I do not feel hungry at all during the morning or throughout the day. It wasn't always like this but my appetite adjusted over time. I have found that going for a walk decrease my hunger. I suspect this light calorie burn, causes the body to elevate blood sugar from glycogen or fat stores until there is an insulin response which promotes satiety.
>>
>>75722942
I'm just saying that it's 1,000% normal for a waitress to be like "huh, you sure?" when you just order soup/salad. In most places, it's an intro. A full meal is like soup, then salad, then entree+sides, then dessert

My peak week:
> min was17k steps
>max was 41k steps
>around 30km walked that day

the next week was nice, my feet was hurting so much but it felt so good... for this I bought a treadmil and I want to beat 50k steps while walking on it since last time I was walking just randomly around the city.

20k daily is pretty good and you will get better at them, so now the pain is the muscles repairing and gaining more endurance, enjoy the pain, eventually 20k steps will be easier
>>
>>75723094
My highest this week was 28k and I average 21-22k a day.

It's nice if you have the time, I wanna get an incline treadmill to reduce the time needed to stay above a 3000cal tdee

Even once I reach my goal, I think keeping my tdee above 3000 is something I wanna keep doing until my body just csnt maintain is anymore.

Finally turned the corner on this fat loss shit since my birthday (late november). Rapidly approaching 200lbs and I feel pretty confident about my hitting my goal weight by July. What has worked for me:
>Caloric deficit
>Allocating 200 calories a day to fruit, very filling and nice snack to have
>Upped protein to 170+g a day; doing it by eating more cottage cheese, eggs, yogurt, lean cuts of steak, chicken, and unique applications of protein powder (some of these foods have a great protein to calorie ratio but some of it is just good for keeping me full).
>Weights 3-4x a week, cardio 4-6x a week. My favorite type of cardio is skipping rope but I know it's not great for the joints so I do that twice a week and then do incline treadmill walking for the rest.

Any nerds in the house?

Is it possible to temporarily abuse the inefficiency of de novo lipogenesis for a carb refeed by eating only protein and carbs that use the DNL to store fat? If we remove stuff like dietary fat and carbs that use other mechanisms for fat conversions we could rev up the calories, maximize the gains and minimize fat gain for a period.

I could not find any studies where they have 1. caloric surplus 2. no fat 3. only glucose, starch and protein and lastly 4. dexascan or some modern shit to actually measure fat gain.

This shit could be the holy grail of anabolism

There are some drugs that either minimize food absorption (acarbose, SGLT2i, orlistat) or increase metabolism (DNP). The former increase hunger to compensate and the latter is too dangerous for human consumption. Really the only thing that works are GLP1s.

well that doesn't mean everything works the same for others.

For me? my pills who keep me alive are the ones who are fucking my hormones and I have a huge apettite after I take them. Taking another medicine that cancels the apettite maybe that could affect how my medicine is already working. So my solution to lose weight is either "explore" long time other medicines that cancels my hunger signals or...just walk daily, do cardio and even my craves win over my will, I eat like a pig salads or other vegetables. To manage both hunger signals and not too many calories. I have huge water retention but that goes off easy with a diuretic 1 or 2 times per week to not get addicted to them.

>to the point you fekt demonically possessed and its not your fault
simple, corticosteroids, and not only one of them but the "big one" is Dexamethasone, and I need it for life.
and many other like depression, anxiety, panic attacks or just not having other things to do but eat
>not your fault
Theoretically it's my fault for eating too much since I was the one who bought those chocolates or cakes or just buy 1kg of almonds then eat at least 300g in one meal after dexa
But now after 1 year of getting obese and 1 year of trying and failing many diets I found one that finally works for me, and I am already in the 'overweight' place, and it's basically JUST NOT BUYING ALL THAT, and by not having that food I can't eat it or eat only eggs, chicken breast, and big amounts of vegetables or salads and big amounts of water. Eventually maybe I will get insulin resistant as a side-effect from corticosteroids so yea maybe eventually I will need those injectables but now I am close to lose weight a natural way and focus on other things in life and just be "a big salad guy" that has a huge plate of salads but less calories that is on the other's plates.

My peak was 4.7k calories in one meal, in total in that day maybe it was over 7k but I felt so ashamed for eating that much I threw out all my food in my house and puked as much as I could and that was what made me focus only on weight loss until I find the way that works only for me, and not just "fix" it, find a diet that I can keep for the rest of my life without even thinking of changing it or even try to fight the appetite boosters, just embrace them and the vegetables might be the solution for me.

my garmin watch + app seems to measure my calories burned for a day somewhat accurately, if i look at how my weight moved, im somewhat normal weight for my height though
i would just try to eat the same amount every day and adjust calories on a weekly basis, unless you randomly decide to run a half marathon or go on a day-long hike, it should average out and accounting for extra 50 calories today compared to your usual day is nonsense.
if your physical activity is consistent, just eat the same damn calories a day and adjust your intake based on your weekly avg scale weight, its that simple
