Can anyone explain to me why you would put a light on top of your monitor, apparently pointing down onto the screen? I am not a clever man and I cannot wrap my head around this.
>>
>>107625039
usually they face down and the sort of soft light diffuses the overall light on the desk, lighting up the desk surface and keyboard and such but also kinda breaking up the lighting contrast of the monitor

think of it like how your screen looks in daylight, an ambient lit room, versus how it looks in pitch darkness
if you have ambient light at night it makes it less harsh to look at, similar to looking at it in am ambient daylight lit room

My advice: Don't become greedy and switch between stable/testing/sid. Use backports sparingly. Also set up a backup method so if you fuck up, you can easily reinstall.
>>
The notion that I don't need to perform a system restart after doing sudo apt remove --purge and/or sudo apt autoremove for normal programs just fucks with my mind so much as a 20 year long Windows-only user. Deep in my head I feel a rampant paranoia that something is still left behind in a non-existent registry or dll somewhere. I just have this massive impulse to restart the system afterwards.

>Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 inches) and typically hold up to 74 minutes of audio or approximately 650 MiB (681,574,400 bytes) of data. This was later regularly extended to 80 minutes or 700 MiB (734,003,200 bytes) by reducing the spacing between data tracks, with some discs unofficially reaching up to 99 minutes or 870 MiB (912,261,120 bytes) which falls outside established specifications.

So yes, the 700Mib are not wrong.

The physical label/text on CD says "700 MB". 584 MB + sector size of 4 MB = 671 MB on disk, if I'm understanding correctly (under the 700 MB limit).

Software engineering will be a solved problem by the end of the decade

Even better, name problems that cannot be solved by omnipotent AGI but can be solved by humans.
>>
>>107625674
You missed the point. It wasn't about the omnipotent AGI it was about not being able to solve problems with what you consider to be a computer nowadays (turing-machines)

I just used "omnipotent agi" as a way to say someone smart enough to code exactly what it needs to display that you can simply never solve everything by our current programming languages, no matter what code you write.

Turing machines have limitations and lots of things in the universe aren't computable by turing machines. quantum computers are also turing machines, and honestly I believe the human brain is also likely to be (merely) a turing machine. But super-turing machines are theoretically possible to create.

It's kind of bizarre that a place like /g/ or even "serious" computer scientists with PhDs in this stuff genuinely believe shit like "If we solve programming we will solve everything". People just assume you can describe everything and solve every issue with our current turing-complete programming languages. Not even realizing there is complexity and a huge problem space outside of the turing machine domain.
>>
>>107625781
My claim is that everything that is solvable can be solved eventually by an AI that is a superhuman software engineer.

I cannot think of a counterexample and it seems like neither can you.
