Anyone using cwm? I sort of like it but it feels like everything needs to be bit "special" and normal actions are needing an extra step.I want>click to raise window>focus not following mouse cursorAnd some other stuff but not too much. Using keyboard shortcuts is normal thing to me anyway. What is a sane but slim alternative to cwm? Dwm isn't.
Anybody else experience random freezes on Void Linux? It will freeze and mouse and keyboard will not work and I have to reboot with power button. The caps lock light flashes which I think indicates kernel panic.I installed Void many times and this seems to be a recurring issue. Installed it on Thinkpad X220.
>>107707405cwm is the only wm you will ever need. Been using it for years. I do not know of any way to make click to raise window, but alt up/down works well enough. Also alt left/right mouse.

So I just need to do basic tasks like listen to music, stream video, and browse basic websites. Is installing windows 2000 a bad idea? How fucked will I be for drivers? The reason I want to do this for one, it's botnet free, and two it was the most streamlined of classic operating systems. I really have a boner for Windows 2000 and I just want to know if it's even moderately viable to use in this day and age.
>>107705709Perfectly viable with the right hardware, which's much harder to come by than plain XP-ready hardware that's fast enough for modern use, and that's why I recomnend POSReady 2009 instead; it's XP but you can choose to install none of the junk so it operates more or less like Win2k.
>>107705709Not really IMO, I mean sure you can I guess but you would most likely be fucked for drivers unless the machine is from that era though. Many XP drivers are somewhat tweakable (Windows 2000 is version 5.0 and XP is 5.1). I wouldn't bother but give it a shot and report back. You could also install a lightweight Loonix system that only runs a Win2K VM but whatever.
>>107705709With ReactOS you'll at least have a chance of getting a working modern web browser.
>>107706209Then at least go full meme and use Haiku or something. Using an outdated version of Windows because you hate change is more autistic than any freetard OS.

I decided I want to hate my life and also try out a new distribution, so I installed NixOS. I do not have a specific use case for it, but I have a goal in which I am trying to give as many Linux distributions as I can a try. I'm running NixOS + GNOME. Safe to say I have no idea what I am doing, but I am going to roll with it anyway. I am going to try to use it for a few weeks or maybe a month. Any advice?
>>107707752> i haven't had this issue using unstableSure, but it's not a matter of 'if', but 'when'.At some point on the unstable channel you're going to find an issue that someone already filed in the Nixpkgs repo. Someone will make a fix, and you'll notice that it was merged into the master branch but not yet built on the unstable channels. So you might switch your channel to the master branch and all of the sudden you're building half a dozen applications from source because it has not yet been built on the official binary cache. Then you'll realize that people are building from the master branch constantly and using the community cachix as a binary cache for that.
>>107707646the release notes are always an interesting read. especially when upgrading versions. i use the nixos options website a lot.

>>107708086I wouldn't be going to bootcamp, this is an officer position you need to pass an interview for, but they interview basically anyone with a CS degree and the minimum GPA.
>>107708145>an officer positionThen you DEFINITELY won't be writing code exploits. You'll basically be a program manager. Also you still have to go to OCS probably which is like a boot camp. Have fun Ensign Anon.
>>107708173I should have been more clear but from what I've read from current CWE's this rate is one of only a handful of officer positions where you do hands on work far more than you people manage, especially at earlier ranks. I don't mind program managing too though.I'll have fun, thanks anon.
>>107708197Sure. I'm just saying I've met quite a few military personnel, both officers and enlisted (and civilian workers too actually) who ended up doing not at all what they expected. Yes, there are special cases for very technical positions, it's just I've never met anyone who had it work out exactly that way. But good luck. Hope you enjoy living in central Maryland.
>>107708222I'm sure things will end up differently than I expect, but it beats my current situation.Gonna make sure to extract my moneys worth from this with free laser eye surgery and an expensive masters degree too. Hopefully we don't go to war and I'm not reassigned to a combat role. Thanks anon.

Given that free GPU drivers only serve to load and interface with non free firmware that runs on your GPU and there being no free GPU firmware in existence, how practical would falling back to software acceleration with todays processor, especially in multi processor machines, be vs GPUs? How many years behind would this put one hardware wise?
>>107703611About......17 years back in terms of performance, with a current mid to high end CPU.
>>107703611Your CPU also has nonfree firmware. RMS says that nonfree firmware is fine as long as its fixed, i.e., can't be undated.
