I don't want a smart fridge, or even a fridge where 1/3 of the freezer is taken up by an automatic ice maker. I want a tall white box with compartments that keep stuff cold or frozen, nothing more. If I want to use a portion of the freezer to make ice, I'll put a plastic ice tray in it. If I want to trade more space for more ice making capability, I'll put more trays. If I want to know what's in my fridge, I'll open the door and use my eyes. If I want recipes for some of the items in it, I'll put those items and the word "recipe" into a search engine. I'm a software engineer and glossy is horrible, super distracting, eye tiring, and doesn't even look good in movies or games imo. It looks as if everything is behind a watery glass. The real world is not glossy.

slackpkg (package manager) is very raw but on the flip-side it never complains. it gets the job done.
slackware is really old school and no non-sense, it behaves like an old school unix system.
it strikes a balance between LFS and something highly automated like debian.

even SBo works fairly well like a more primitive ports-tree. there are like 9000 slackbuilds available which is decent.

its actually amazing how it all holds together.

Slackware is fucking awful to maintain as a rolling release. As soon as you need something from SBo, it's only a matter of time before some update breaks it, be it a library link, a program modifying its behaviour, etc. It's just like AUR, except somehow worse because the tooling around automating SlackBuild scripts is either nonexistent or very broken.

I used Slackware in the 14.2 days, and the merit of having a distro as brutalistically simple as this, was that I could modify and patch any package or system config, or add any package, and be confident that it'd run for *years*. My server still runs 14.2. This all breaks down when you add rolling to the mix, then suddently you need to actively maintain your system, and I found that fucking Gentoo ends up being significantly easier to maintain in such a model. It actually has tooling to maintain the shitty parts of having an unstable foundation.

The development model of slackware is whoever gets in the author's pants gets to actually modify things. This is fine, all the power to him, but after the 15th time I tried pointing out a problem in slackpkg, a slackbuild script, a package, or whatever, and seeing the author not care, I yearned again for a distro I can just send a PR to and bother people in the bug tracker.
15.0 shipped the *singular* xkeyboard-config release with a broken spanish keymap, and that never got patched.

I'm really glad it exists, it served me a great deal in my linux journey to learn the ins and outs of creating a distro. When you start adding stuff to slackware, you become your own distro maintainer. The tooling is incredibly simple and easy to understand, and easy to expand upon. But most of all, it helped me understand why the "complex" tooling on other distros came to be. Now I can use a proper distro and appreciate how much less time I have to waste hunting for packaging mishaps and making my modifications permanent.

from about 2020 to 2024 i ran through 14.2 and 15. and it was the most stable distro ever. however when you need to extend it it does take more effort.

i still compile the kernel on slackware though because its just heckin simple as bread and butter.

if you're not happy, then just use something else.

anyways. as a minimal base upon which to assemble your own distro its perfect.
on current i can choose between 2, 3 kernels at any time. the source is where you expect it.
