READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

It'll cause some attenuation at the edge of the core, but an airgap leads me to think the photons will splash out. Did you get cheap chink keystone things? I haven't done alot of fiber stuff, other than shine a torch in one end to see if light gets through a cable and swap pairs over.

because the good parts are the legacy. 99% of what makes c++ good is c, c++ is just type theory cultists, oop and progressively functional programmers trying to force their way on the forefront by putting themselves on top of the most popular and most useful language.

>99% of what makes c++ good is c
There's nothing good about C. Everything in C was stolen from other languages and the good parts are what they copied from mainstream languages and the bad parts are what Ctrannies did differently from the mainstream. Null-terminated strings and array decay were stolen from other languages too, but they were considered brain damage and abnormal.

Why is that so much Open Source software and for example, social media platforms, happen to be such ugly fucking pieces of shit, that are very slow, complicated to use, have massive flaws in say accounts being attached to detached "servers" that mean you can't use the same account across boards or if you can if your initial instance ends your account gets deleted etc.
Mastadon, Lemmy, Peertube etc.
Aren't these trying to be alternatives to big social media sites that have largely fucked up their sites with bloat and shitty moderation? Yet you can feel the autismo programmer socks behind all the programming, and any time you read people making UX recommendations to make the communities, actually fucking usable to non-the creators and fanboys all have meltdowns from all the Hyperbola tier ass users.

This is a feature, not a bug.

Never use the same name in two different places.
>>
>>107663044
It's fine to do this based on threat model of course

Its best when you have a very generic username, or make your username something that search would resolve to a generic thing

I.e, "android-debug" as username or similar. Just a random thing that exists

mastodon is good, but JS only frontend sucks balls. i'm aware there are others but it's a pain to work with as I don't use mastodon frequently and am not setting anything up let alone installing anything.

reddit is designed around the concept of censorship and filtering 'undesirable members' from communicating, lemmy is a wannabe reddit clone but is harder to censor or moderate, which means reddishits will never use it and instead they will stick with their convenience big platforms with strong censorship tools.

any competitor to youtube will lose unless you can seamlessly upload content from YT to that platform, which requires playing dirty with gorilla tactics and not giving a fuck about the law, which means it's not gonna happen, and this is only 1% of the battle.

Any version of Windows since 1995 has been more polished, production-ready and user-friendly than any Linux distro ever made. That's obvious to anybody who has installed both of them on the same machine.

Are Linux users just lying about their distros being a better experience than a Windows installation?

because Linux doesn't make me pay $250 to remove a watermark, also doesn't constantly try to redirect me to their store, for example, with command aliasing, etc
I recently did a clean install of WiNdOws and I can safely say installing Ubuntu is much smoother.
>>
>>107664055
I would disagree because I had some really terrible, traumatic experiences with W10 (more than 11 actually, which is funny because everyone says 11 is the antichrist and it pushes every man woman and child to switch to linux).
But I grab 11 or even 10 these days, I open up a program and tick a few boxes and I'm not gonna lie, I still have less worries than having to use an LTS distro with less hardware support, less applications available and compromises left and right. Now I have to learn a whole different RAW editor. Now I have to get this piece of shit gamepad to work because it's not plug and play. I have to think of what I buy carefully because it's a roulette, maybe it won't have support on linux. I can't use a proprietary application for a small device, one of a kind, because it needs proprietary software to work and over WINE it isn't detecting the GPU that it needs to convert files. I can't automagically transfer shit from my camera, I need to use the classic weird folder structure from my SD and figure out how to keep it all tidy. Is that a performance uplift that brings it closer to Windows? Too bad, I have to wait a long time for that update if I don't want to be on the edge and risk having stability issues that will require me to roll back every now and then. My desktop choice is directly tied to a display feature working or not (???). Despite being "more stable" this one program isn't outputting anything but empty files but this non-stable distro doesn't have the problem? Is that a new AMD driver feature- oh it's locked to Windows for now. Wow my friends are celebrating christmas and watching all movies and I'm doing all this troubleshooting bullshit. All this confusing shit is why sometimes I think "damn, windows is sluggish and I have to run that chris titties tool to get rid of the garbage, but that is the extent of it".
