>Not sure what private trackers are all about?
A private tracker is an invite-only torrent website. Each member shares common goals: collecting, preserving and discussing media.

>Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Fedora, and Arch. Other suggestions are welcome.
These are all good.
Ubuntu has Canonical's decisions over a Debian base. Lipstick on a pig some may say but I think Debian is a battle tested & wise hog. Ubuntu is a fine choice minus their insistance on "snaps" which is an entirely superfluous package format.

Mint is basically Ubuntu without snaps but, assuming you'd go with it, Cinnamon DE (desktop environment) which is their own custom Windows -like UI. Many like this because it takes a lot of the pros of Ubuntu (good proprietary/non default driver support and sane default installed software out of the box) but doesn't fall for the snap shit.

It's technically always a little behind Ubuntu's updates which itself is behind Debian's

Debian I've never used but if you want the "base" and least controversial design decision of the Debian family I'd go with it.

With all 3 of these they're a bit further behind the most recent Linux kernel releases. Which means that new hardware support does lag a bit. This is a Linux issue in general but it's exacerbated by Debian being the base

Fedora and Arch, on the flip side both have very quick uptake of kernel releases. Personally l use Fedora and enjoy it. Just the right level of sane defaults and fast updates

it's crazy how fucking delusional these sandwichmen are...
if a fucking nand memory module is under $10 straight out of factory then all the engineers who designed these "costly looking" machines and the supply-chain experts did a really good job and the company is making money, why the fuck would I bend the knee + tip on top of the money I just gave them when I bought the product?
they're making fucking money with these pricetags otherwise they would not sell anything and go bankrupt, fucking duh, how can the boss of an advertisement company be so disconnected from how businesses operate?
he definitely learned absolutely fucking nothing from the time he made that fucking video where he cried like a little bitch about how spoiled he was and how it hurt muh feelings...
fucking disgusting

this is why we need more technicians/engineers and less highschool dropouts in the youtube space, clowns are just too disconnected from reality and in aww in front of any big scawwy-looking machines for no fucking reason.

they have too much influence to ignore them sadly, they're doing too much harm with their incompetence.

Any version of Windows since 1995 has been more polished, production-ready and user-friendly than any Linux distro ever made. That's obvious to anybody who has installed both of them on the same machine.

Are Linux users just lying about their distros being a better experience than a Windows installation?

Most likely. Urban retards, especially /g/ types, think "economy" means providing other urbies with abstract desk job "services", maybe some useless plastic trinkets. They don't have any comprehension of physical resources or any idea who owns them.

It doesn't. People are so brainwashed by capitalist economics that they continue to think in such terms even as capitalism is being dismantled before their very eyes.

I was thinking about this a few years ago. I considered a few solutions including tape and some special optical disks intended to have a long shelf life.
In the end I decided to place a few retroreflectors at 10, 20, and 30 light years from Earth. I encoded all my data into a single stream of bits and transmitted them towards each reflector with a laser. If I lose the other copies of my data I'll have convenient opportunities to recover it at the 20, 40, and 60 year marks just by being ready in the right place with a photodetector.

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Its not just a nas these days, they typically run a whole bunch of programs for you. Say you are into cord cutting, host your own media server and spotify replacement (not saying you should download the 300tb torrent). I also run home automation, password manager, email server, stuff like that. I resist the urge to sign up to more and more cloud and internet services.
Even the simple NAS that are just a small box you put HDDs can run a bunch of stuff.
>>
>>107654404
I always found home automation to be a meme.
Like, I purposely avoid buying smart things, so I just never found the appeal of home automation.
Same with password managers. At most I only sync things to my devices, I never run a password manager server, in case my server goes down I at least don't have to rely on it to get my passwords.
>>
>>107654468
For me, I got sick of wearing out light swiches. They don't make them like they used to. So now lights turn on and off when I move around the house. Extraction fans turn off after a timeout period. Dashboard tablet displays weather forecasts, flood conditions, weather radar stuff. I ain't into signing up to cloud services, this all works offline.
Its a hobby I suppose.

In my experience, the apps and extensions that connect to the password manager cache database, in an encrypted form I suppose. While I cant make changes when its offline, it still sort of works.
