It is already decoupling, because sequencing logic stays in separate place and you can manage it there without touching function bodies. You can even have it read from config file if you want. But it goes way beyond this basic level, in Bevy there system sets for example allowing things like this:

It's all still GNU/Linux, the biggest differences in user experience come from the Desktop Environment as they come with a different set of applications and tools, some support Wayland by default others are still on X11.
Then there's package managers like apt, the new formats like flatpak and snap, and whether the distro uses systemd.
If you're happy with what you're using just spin up a VM to play around in instead of distrohopping.

There are a million ways to interpret having 'a good understanding of Linux'.
If you want to learn the command line, filesystem, and tools to write software on Linux, you can use whatever. Ubuntu is fine.
If you want to understand how a Linux distro really comes together from a bunch of modules to get a coherent experience running, you can learn a lot from installing and using Arch.

Arch teaches you a lot. I basically own my entire career to it and the time I've "wasted" during my teen years. Even if I mostly use RHEL/Ubuntu at work, the knowledge I've gained from Arch were priceless. Gentoo is also fine from learning, but the time you spend compiling is just not worth it. Also, learning how to configure your own kernel, it's not a valuable skill in the field. Nobody will ask you to do that. Just use Arch/Artix.

Getting a modern kernel is as easy as swapping for Liquorix (or Xen depending on the distro, but I've found Liquorix more reliable).
And updated firmware is as easy as

There's a difference between "caring about" a performance tax and straight up being unable to play because of it. Someone who hates getting fucked over despite being a paying customer but can still run the game (although poorly) will just refuse to pay for it and use HV instead. Someone who can't run the game because of the alleged performance tax will not use HV anyway because they can't run the fucking game.

Even if, hypothetically, Irdeto could log every single HV bypass user, they would have ABSOLUTELY no way of knowing what percentage of that group specifically complained about being unable to run the game because of denuvo despite that not being true. As opposed to people who just want games for free regardless of denuvo or people who complain because they don't like being affected by DRM in any way despite paying for the game. And even if they did, it would be a very small percentage.
