>>108490866I've gone to a ton of computer stores to buy parts and only met one or two guys who actually knew what they were doing, mind you I don't go in there acting like a know it all, I feign being a casual user/ignorance when I can to see what they know. Computer repair became like cellphone/tablet repair these past few years, there are probably lots of repair stores relying entirely on mimicking YouTube videos to diagnose and replace parts, these are not true repairs, fast part swapping, on parts that might not be broken, like at a bad mechanic shop. asking Google for how to fix something, probably more on grok lately. I've only seen one place that tries to do data recovery, but all the others recommend you trash/replace an old drive or reinstall windows without attempting to copy important files for the owner. I always make a backup of a drive before I change anything. If you've got kids who don't really know how to use a computer yet I always recommend setting up a VM for them so they don't ruin the actual computer or delete important files.
Why don't we make an OS from scratch with no Unix and no (minimal) legacy bloat? What would be the best architecture for this modern OS?

>>108502896It’s good, if you understand its purpose and limitations.I’ve been using it for almost 2 years, since back when it was only on mac. For pure text edit vanilla Zed is much better than VSCode, but there things that VSCode does better thanks to extensions(in my experience Docker related) and non textual media support such as images.Zed has very good AI support out of the box(better than VSCode) but for AI centered tasks I’m currently using Antigravity. You don’t need to but as a matter of personal preference I like to keep my AI tools separated from my hand coding tools.
I'm OOTL since I don't keep up with crapple's products, but why did they start putting out cheap products? First they made a $600 Mac Mini a few years ago, and now there's a MacBook that runs off an iPhone processor for about the same price. Apple worked so hard to establish themselves as a luxury fashion brand so that they can sell overpriced crap, why are they suddenly pivoting to pandering to people that aren't pretending to look rich?
>>108505633No it doesn't.computer parts are expensive and we're in a war in the middle east.Exactly the same as the 90s.
cause apple recognizes that peoples buying power are getting worse and worse, so they want to be the first to take advantage of being the premium yet affordable brand
I suspect Apple is building an AI type service, and they need as many people as possible to use their machines so they have data to train with. The machines can be near gabage tier, but that doesn't matter if they convince enough people to use their AI platform in the future, probably leasing more powerful computers over the internet for whatever their low/mid end can't do.
>>108505633Many threads have been made on /g/ over the years discussing how Apple is still a luxury brand. There's been that meme relatively recently that some women won't date you unless you have an iPhone because Apple's marketing is compatible with their fashion brand centric world view.>>108505755>>108506140They're diluting their brand and it will hurt them in the long run. Their entire business relies on them being seen by normies as a luxury brand, so if they start releasing cheap shit (even though it has the same profit margin) that perception of them will go away and they won't be able to justify their high prices anymore. It will work in the short term, sure, because thirdies would love the opportunity to get an Apple thing for cheap like it's some brand like Fila or Supreme that was big once but has since fallen off, but what about a few years from now when Apple, who set themselves up as a fashion brand, now has to operate as a fashion brand that's gone out of fashion?>>108506175I feel like this is the best explanation. Again, they know if they release a cheap thing then cheap people will buy it for the badge on it, so that's a lot of data they can harvest for Siri.
>>108507730>There's been that meme relatively recently that some women won't date you unless you have an iPhone because Apple's marketing is compatible with their fashion brand centric world view.I've always chalked that up to Apple making interacting with Android as painful as possible. Years of "Green bubbles messing up by group chats" has conditioned women (and some men, even) to feel a sense of disgust from Android users.
