>Under WSL2, Windows can handle this load just fine - it just bullies Linux-side processes to give back resources for UI when necessary
Oh, that's a different thing. I've noticed that too, if windows wants vram or something it just yanks it from wsl without thinking. I hated that because it would kill training scripts with no way to stop it, and it gives you untraceable "unknown" cuda errors at random. I gave up on wsl for that reason.
It's no surprise that windows can be snappy under those conditions but its a high price to pay, if you really want that you might be able to do something with priorities but most oses are not designed to steal resources that aggressively.

However I do know cachyos uses more real time schedulers designed for desktop use, and it does feel snappier to me
>>
>>107661164
I didn't have issues with WSL2 even in highly resource-strained scenarios (as that's more of a virtualization solution rather than the translation layer solution like the OG WSL was), but I can easily see that being a problem.
Windows' way of doing things isn't "the objectively best" approach, clearly, but it does match my preference.

I did hear about Cachyos actually, so it's nice to hear a confirmation.
I'm not really familiar with the details, but seeing it's a fork of Arch, if I didn't want to use a derivative distro, can I assume starting with Arch and then adding stuff from Cachyos is something reasonably possible?
Or would it be too much of an unnecessary undertaking?
>>
>>107661251
In my case I think the problem was that my scripts were nearly maxing out vram, but I had an intel chipset with no igpu so any desktop stuff needed vram. If I ran both on bare metal, my script would slow down if I saw too many animated gifs in the web browser.
Unfortunately I don't think you can share tight resources well when there's a virtualization boundary, that sort of thing is the whole point of an OS really. So something has to take priority, and in my case, if windows needed to render a gif or something it'd just kill my script lol. idk I don't blame it, its just a consequence of the approach wsl2 uses.

For cachy I don't know, to me it looks like arch with access to all the same repos, just some extra ones added. You might be able to add the cachy repos to an existing arch install, it just might be more fiddling to get it all set up together. Not sure if it'd make you any more resilient to the project shutting down though, once you have those packages installed you still rely on them for updates.

Hi

Trying to set up 5.1 surround sound.

On Windows, I can use RealTek Audio Console to change the audio ports to function how I need them to work.
Line Out -> FL/FR
Line In -> SL/SR
Mic -> CEN/SW

How do I do this on Linux?

I was already just waiting for am6/ddr6 anyway. On this board I've gone from 1050ti > 3060 12gb > 9070xt and 3600 > 5700x. This board was $80. I have also gome from a fractal torrent to an antec c8 and a 550w non modular to an 850w modular psu. I was skipping am5 because the very idea that I couldn't buy a 32gb kit and then buy another 32gb kit later without probable speed loss fucking disgusted me. Ddr6 is supposed to solve the memory controller issues by offloading some of it from the cpu to the memory modules themselves.

If i buy a new computer (current one has possible SSD issues, graphics card power issues and overheating) with a 5070 and windows 11.
Can i just uninstall that and immediately install windows 10? I heard in some previous thread that win 11 could be better for gpu optimization or whatever.
>>
>>107661530
Yes you can just wipe the 11 install with diskpart within the 10 install USB and put 10 on it. I do hear that NVIDIA doesn't release its latest drivers for 10 anymore so be careful for that, you should use NVCleanstall to get a driver that will work properly.

Linux Mint's user base is all boomers who want an old version of Windows and would be better off actually using an old version of Windows but they bought into "muh security" or another vague belief about why Linux is better even though they have no interest in actually learning the Linux way of doing things and just want everything to work as it did in Windows XP. At least with Ubuntu you learn the Linux way of doing things and the OS is grounded in the Linux philosophy even though it holds your hands through a lot of things. Half of Mint's user base, on the other hands, would be terrified of doing as little as the most basic of stuff in the terminal. Mint has no purpose of existence rather than cater to people who would probably be better off using Windows XP because that's what they actually want.

>a mathematical certainty that another disk will have an URE during rebuild and nuke your data
This is one of the most stupid myths going around in the "storage" community. Do you really think you can't read all the data off a drive without it failing? Like is this what you actually believe, that you cannot read all the data stored on a perfectly functioning HDD? Have you ever tried to do exactly that? Have you ever tried to issue a SMART long self-test, which basically has the drive verify that it can read across its entire capacity?

I've had arrays doing monthly full scans for nearing a decade and the stupid things never fail to read unless the drives are actually bad and dying (if you see this happen, it's time to replace the drive because some more serious failure mode is likely near).

>>107654812

Currently the search function is just ctrl-f. Before, it was basically a filter.
>>
The scrollbar got fucked up.
It's become harder to touch it to scroll.
Posts displayed on screen don't match with what the scrollbar tells you, which is evident if you post, get a (You), or use filters that highlight posts.
The release version has a brighter colored section at the center of the scrollbar that shows posts from the current screen which got removed.
Currently the scrollbar seems to use where it is in the thread's location to show posts, e.g at the top of a thread it uses the top portion of the bar, at the middle of the thread it uses the center part, and at the bottom of the thread it uses the bottom part. This may not be obvious on shorter threads but on longer threads like on /vg/ it's easy to spot.
