READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Kind of a noob here. Is Authentik a good security solution for when I want to expose a service to the internet without using VPNs or zero trust? How noob friendly is it? I checked their documentation and a lot of the terms they use to describe it doesn't make sense to me
>>
>>107707418
expose it to the internet.
fill it with webms of people sticking glass bottles up their ass and the glass breaking.

punish them
>>
>>107707418
Kanidm is likely a better fit if you want to delegate authentication to another service (with single sign-on as an added bonus). Piss easy to set up; single binary with no external service dependencies, can be deployed in a container also. Easiest solution of all is still just tailscale with headscale though, but if you really wanna avoid VPNs, OpenID Connect with kanidm is probably the simplest you'll get. Really recommend reading their documentation about what they do and can do for you.

The singularity is near.

FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.

>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

Wrong. Gaming is all about Linux now and there is no going back to AI goyslop OS

SteamOS/Bazzite are 100% good for playing games these days on Linux but just using a local account'd 11 Enterprise is more just werks then otherwise.

oh i thought it was only slow because the official builds didnt support native compilation
guess emacs just isnt that compatible with windows
>>
>>107706125
Windows' file system is bad at handling lots of tiny files, which emacs relies upon heavily. In earlier Windows versions you could tweak the registry setting NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation for a performance boost (at the price of backwards compatibility), I do not know if this is still relevant in Win11.

My experience after using space for about 6 months and doom for 2 years:

spacemacs
- slow
- uses many obsolete packages
- updates often break shit
+ documentation all in one place
+ very nice setup for clojure and lisp
+ more complete keybinding setup
+ has emulation modes in other editors like vscode

doom
- documentation very fragmented and full of annoying stubs
- custom.el doesn't work right

Ah, no it doesn't, because they weren't able to implement it in their React bullshit and nobody had the knowledge how it would work. Same goes for task bar anywhere else but at the bottom.
Also in Win10 the Task Manager didn't crash when you tried to close it, nor did it turn itself into a fork bomb.
Furthermore, in Win10 you didn't have to open the actual useful right click menu by opening a right click menu inside the right click menu.

hey /g/, friend offered to sell me her laptop, here are the specs

i7
nvidia geforce gt 630M
8 gigs of ram 2.20 ghz
1tb
windows 8

Would be used for extremely light gaming, mostly older rpgs i just want a fast functioning laptop.

its a Dell 17R-5720. Shes offering it between 100-200, is it worth buying a used laptop if i dont necessarily care about gaming too much?

It's the ram that kills it but if you're ok with playing snes games and longer than average load times it's fine for the price.

If it has HDMI I'd consider it for $50 but I'm in the US--I know old tech is more expensive elsewhere. Random FYI all the usual web browsers are no longer updated on Windows 8 and won't let you log into your bank account and probably many other websites

He's still a hypocrite. He works at google who literally wrote the paper that started the modern LLM industry. Google says that they are "saving the planet" with AI (on the front page of google search) and google is one of the large AI companies now with Gemini. He invented the Go programming language which is inefficient and wastes a lot of energy. If he really hates that then he would stop working at google. He is famous enough that he can literally work anywhere he wants. He has never even spoken up against what google is doing. "It's ok when we do it".
