Windows started going down hill with XP. By vista/7 is was in freefall.
>>
>>107698235
Years when the major operating switched to the flat design:
2011 Android 4
2012 Windows 8
2013 iOS 7
2014 Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

That was 11-14 years ago. It's hard to think that the flat design now has lasted longer than the 3d skeuomorphic designs lasted.

But yeah I really miss the designs of late 2000s-very early 2010s.

This but with classic theme in high res, destroys Linux in usability. They can't even replicate this start menu properly.

I could see something like that working with NBP, but it might still not be "perfect" while being very expensive to run.

Which actually reminds me that we still haven't seen anything about the Gemini Flash 3 based Nano Banana. Flowith has even a placeholder for it from quite some time.

can we go back to using RAM as an SSD?

I used shadowplay for a while until I wanted it to save to my nas. It would always fallback to the default because windows was starting it before connecting to the server. Now I use obs replay buffer which uses memory for the temp file. I have 64GB so it's trivial to let it have 16GB while gaming to have a couple hours of footage.
>>
>>107696332
It's not about speed tho, i just like empty, easily accessible volatile drive for temp files

You know, it boggles my mind that we've reached the point where SSDs are as fast as RAM used to be on older machines. It was so gradual that it felt only a numbers game, until you compare it with numbers from, I dunno, a Core 2 Quad era machine.

And with DDR6 (and especially DDR7), system memory will have as much or even more bandwidth than high end videocards used to have. IGPUs are now actually viable for gaming too.

I tried for a few months after Win10 was killed.
On Win11 now, but one day I'll probably break and switch to Apple if MS keeps pushing this shit they do.

For Mac, it looks and feels great, much much better hardware than the other laptops or even PCs.
For me the only no-go was that mac cannot open different apps on different monitors. If I open bring the browser to front, it wants to brring all browsers to front, even on the other monitor. Fuck that, I want to multitask.

macs have:
>soldered SSD/RAM/WLAN

doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when the SSD dies it bricks your entire currybook because the EFI is stored on thesoldered SSD to save $0.05 on a dedicated chip
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>components serial numbered and tied to the motherboard to prevent repair and replacement (including battery)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs

this year ive travelled to 12 countries, stayed in hotels with michelin star restaurants, bought audiophile headphones for enjoying music, bought two new guitars for playing, have spent 15k on plane tickets for my friends from other countries to fly with me so we could spend time together, have treated my parents to michelin star restaurants, have donated to charity, and have saved more towards a house to raise children in

now how exactly will you do this with neetbux? even if you dont believe me (idc), how will you?

This is the actual answer, though. It's a huge pain in the ass to tailor your resume/cover letter for each application and does take way longer than it should, but I don't know how you people can complain about being unemployed if you just spam the same template over and over to hundreds of completely different job postings. What would you do with those if you were a hiring manager?

That's nuts. In a good way
>>
>>107699674
lisp machines are a remnant of the past. they do not make any sense in the modern world because of glaring security issues. do you really want some smelly webjeet to be able to send code lisp code to your machine that gets ran as any program would? that being said emacs is as close as you can get to a modern lisp machine, and it can replace much of your computing if you want.
>>
>>107699518
>For example, how do you run multiple instances of the same program then?
Emacs Lisp provides thread and process abstractions.
https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Threads.html
https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Processes.html
Surely, a lisp machine could provide similar abstractions for running functions concurrently and asynchronously.
>>
>>107699965
The first part is not strictly true. While I agree I don’t want my web browser to be able to modify arbitrary code on my system, that’s also precisely the issue we had with Unix. But many bugs allowing unintended memory access wouldn’t have been possible on a Lisp machine, so the criticism cuts both ways. It’s too strong a claim to make that they don’t make sense at all.

Ever wonder how the hell Valve simply allows people to access Steam's various APIs to access any user's historical data? Like, think of SteamREP for example and how shit that was while it was still around. People still leave +reps on profiles thinking it does shit.

There's still a couple websites that profile Steam users and ignore privacy whilst also pay-walling features like viewing deleted comments. Kinda fucked up if you ask me, anons

dynamic character animations are impossible because the lighting info is stored into the model.
if you were talking about talking to IRL people, in that case the cost of turning the camera info into a streaming point cloud / splat format would be either too slow, or very low in quality.
I've seen it done in minecraft, that might be the future of VR chatrooms if we could download 1tb in an minute casually.

I am regularly amazed that we pretend folders are the right way to organise files. They’re entirely arbitrary. Every competent file system ignores them to its best ability. Why can’t I have a file in two folders? Why does one have to be a “reference”? Why can’t I filter for files that exist in 3 folders with X extension?

We’ve been played for absolute fools.

hard links existed before soft links
>>
>>107681857
can you name a better alternative? hint: it's not tags (which are useful for some purposes but cannot maintain a system structure).

tl;dr:
we build our technology as an extension of ourselves and our way of life. folder hierarchy vs tags is technologically analogous to male-derived hierarchy vs female-derived communism, and in the real world we know which one works and which one has never built a successful or stable civilization. sure, maybe just using tags would work for one small tribe (folder), but the more people you get and the more tags you share between them, the more inefficient and unwieldy the system becomes. files are not the same, and you can't just throw them all in the same bucket with some tags and expect everything to work smoothly when you start gathering tens of thousands of moving parts. the more complex things become, the more organization and hierarchy you require to further build and maintain them, and a folder filing system is basically the only way to do this; it's the same system we still use with physical documents in real life because there isn't anything better.

>>107697189
Well I use zotero for that
I don't understand why any of this needs to be organised at an OS level when we have dedicated programs to sort things.
OSes aren't good for any kind of organisation beyond the OS itself
