READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

so I have 2x20TB in a RAID 1 array, and just recently learned about RAID 5

I also read that RAID 5 isn't recommended for drive sizes over 10TB because the rebuild time is so long

what are my best options for increasing my storage? options seem to be
>add a 3rd 20TB and do RAID 5 anyway, for a total of 40TB
>add two more 20TB and do a second RAID 1
>break up the RAID because my data is easily re-obtainable (movies/television/music), and I can backup my files onto cold storage anyway

I just busted my load in fear of rising prices and dropped 2k on a NAS setup. I'm recycling my SSDs from my ps5 since I don't use it anymore and I got a microcenter deal for the ram/cpu/mobo.

Yeah I can help you make a local bin shortcut hat launches a Windows XP VM in seamless mode.

First use msconfig to get your app to start up on XP then I need to figure out how to get virtual box Windows xp to start in seamless mode. The end result should be a desktop Icon running the wrapper to boot you app. You also need a shared folder between the VM but that's easy.

Why do people on /g/ accuse Cloudflare of being a "MITM"? Obviously an HTTP reverse proxy needs to be able to process HTTP requests to function. Also, if someone is paranoid, they can use the Web Crypto API.

a lot of people miss the point of it being the background noise to your surroundings instead of the other way around. you're not supposed to listen to it at very loud volumes. as for the pressure issue, depends a lot for every individual. i personally can have the neckband ones on the whole day and not get any negative effects but my gf cant use one for more than 15 minutes without getting a headache. however i cant deal with the earhook ones for too long.
for casual listening on a commute, while doing housework, just being out and about or performing activities that require your full awareness, it's totally fine.

The jellyfin media player / jellyfin desktop program works well enough. However, I've never tried it with a controller.
I have used my phone as a remote for it, as the android app lets you connect to the desktop app as a remote.

Your PC wasn't high end if it can't run Kodi. It was first built as a media player for Xbox consoles and then branched out into all other OS's.

They do the same shit. Ad revenue is still their friend, regardless of how large of a piece of their business model advertising is. No, they likely make the bulk of their profit selling users dox. They all do. With the exception of a certain VPN provider.

People definitely did not like 10 at the start and only have done so recently as a cope for Windows 11.
10 basically set the precedence for turning Windows into a service for Microsoft and shifted the revenue focus on not just the actual license sale but also data collection and ads.
