Buy a thinkpad x230 and install heads. Write protect the flash chip. Put nail polish on the screws and take high resolution pictures to ensure signs of tampering. Do NOT use a HDD or SSD. They have DMA so a malicious firmware could do a lot of damage, use of USB is preferred since they do not have DMA. Completely remove the microphone, sound card, webcam and the WWAN card from the laptop. Remove the fan to prevent binary acoustic data transmission. Replace the default wifi card with a supported atheros card. Disable wifi when not in use, preferably by physically removing the card. Make your own independent Linux distro from scratch. Most Linux distros value convenience over security and will thus never have good security. Your only option is to make your own. Use musl instead of glibc, Libressl instead of openssl, sinit instead of systemd, oksh instead of bash, toybox instead of gnu coreutils to reduce attack surface. Enable as little kernel modules as possible. Use a hardened memory allocator. Apply strong SELinux and sandboxing policies. Restrict the root account heavily to make sure it never gets compromised. Disable JavaScript and CSS in your browser. Block all FAGMAN domains in your hosts file. Monitor all network requests. Do not use a phone. Never speak near anyone who owns a phone, they are always listening. Never use any non-corebooted technology made after 2006. Never leave your devices unattended. Tape triple layer aluminum foil all around your room as tempest shielding. Type really quietly as defense against audio keylogging. Use ecc ram to minimize rowhammer and rambleed. Encrypt everything multiple times with various different encryption implementations. Compile everything from source. Use hardened compilation flags. Always read through the source before installing something if possible. Only use the internet when absolutely necessary.

Is the TrackPoint in the T480 much worse than in a T420 keyboard? I want the classic keyboard for typing.
Should I get a T430 or a modded X230 planar with a quad-core CPU for best speed?
>>
>>100158399
just buy cells that were used originally and everything will be fine, like brand new
you just need spot welder and soldering iron, you can also "recell" the cmos battery with spot welder by replacing the coin battery and replacing the isolation
after you learn how to do this your computer will live forever
never throw away oem batteries even if they are dead / low capcity, you can reuse their casings and recell
>>

modded x230 is best, i have quad core x230 with japan keyboard and nothing will ever beat it
t430 if you want cdrom i guess
>>100158717
also forgot to add:
the casings are glued shut, which is slightly annoying
you will have to replace the glue aswell
the glue is so bumping the battery wont cause worst case explosion

Hey /tpg/entlemen,

So I'm having a X260 and I think I overwork it, I have no idea of Intel's CPU suffix when buying it, and the X260 is having U, while I see something like T470P is HQ.

Could gentlemen here recommend me which model is good for kind of workstation but still kind of wise in power consumption?

Thank you /tpg/entlemen

I'm debating whether to use my old StinkPad L420 as a NAS, or to buy a relative new fanless chnk mini PC. The current power cable is frayed, so I would have to buy another. £25. But the second issue is the placement. The ThinkPad going to go on a small cute furniture shelf, a little wooden square rack, and the power supply is just going to hang off the side. With right angled connectors it's fine, but this power cable isn't at a right angle, it's shoots straight outwards. That's going to be stressful on it. Can I do anything to reinforce it and extend its longevity? Wrap lots of heavy black tape around it? It'll be stressful on the actual socket of the laptop itself too I suppose, can't do anything about that, but the actual cable, where it meets the chunky plastic connector final bit, that's where the plastic/rubber sheath has opened up on my current one, after 12 years of wear and tear.
>>
>>100160928
Why not wrap tape around the power supply and something else (the side of the shelf? the underside of the shelf?) so the power connector and cable don't get any stress at all
>>
>>100158639
I have both the T480 and T420. T420 seems a bit bigger due to the keyboard being taller, but I don't really notice a different in use.
>>
>>100161038
yeah maybe i'll do that. it will still be hanging off but it'll be dragged downwards by only a little bit of the cable weight, just a few inches worth, rather than the weight of the whole cable. just enough loose to it's not bent awkwardly. then tape the rest of the cable to the shelf leg/corner so that tape joint bears the weight of most of the length of the cable. thanks bro :)

currently setting up a dual boot windows/linux on my T480s. Never done this before but I've read horror stories here about people defaulting to grub on boot first to pick between windows or linux on startup only to eventually have windows murder grub and turn the linux drive into a cadaver. Am I right in thinking I will avoid issues like that by using separate drives and just using the bios boot selector to select a drive?

>StinkPad
My ThinkPad has no odor. If yours does, then maybe that reflects your own poor personal hygiene choices.
>>
>>100161903
Install Windows first, use Ubuntu Live CD to shrink the Windows partition(s) to make room for Ubuntu, then install Ubuntu.
After that, ask >>>/g/fwt/ for instructions to use the Windows boot loader to select between Windows and Ubuntu at the startup (yes, this is possible).
>>
I fell for le Thinkpad meme ca. 2018 and have been using an X220 I got then ever since, but it's had various issues and is sort of falling apart. Should I get another X220 or is there a better choice at this rate?

What the other anon said. Old thinkpads are not very powerful, cheap, but also not super efficient and bulkier than they need to be. Newer thinkpads are much more powerful, range from cheap-ish to expensive the newer you go, and possibly more efficient but still more powerful than you need, therefore probably more battery hungry and bulky than you'd really need.
An ARM tablet with a keyboard case will be more power-efficient, light and portable than almost any laptop.

I am a university student—my needs are pretty simple, I do a lot in the web browser but also just want a functioning GNU/Linux OS (my setup is fairly lightweight). I would like a general long-lasting device. I have a desktop computer which is much more powerful but I wonder if it would be good or worthwhile to use the Thinkpad only.

My device has various cracks and things physically falling apart in the chassis. It will also unexpectedly shutdown often when the device is closed and transported. Also, things that seem to have always been the case with this device are a stuttering touchpoint and a dim and fairly small display.

I do enjoy the keyboard, the availability of a touchpoint, the size/weight, and the theoretical durability. I also enjoy that I can coreboot, but I suppose it isn't a requirement for me. Likewise, I don't use many of them but I like having many hardware ports available.

Based on that, I'd recommend a T440p or T470/T480. Any of those will be fine. Look at you budget, what's available, and don't neglect the screen specs. You will hate yourself if you get a TN 768p screen.

You might look at the X380/X390 as well. It's a happy 13.3" medium between the 12.5" X220 and a 14" T series.

Wow, I see someone brought up "recelling" a laptop battery last thread.
I looked it up and found what it is. I had no idea this was even possible, bravo. But is this really cost effective? I paid $33 for my T540p's battery last year, brand new aftermarket thing that its seller offered with a lengthy warranty. Still, for any models whose batteries are unobtainium or severely overpriced, I can see it making sense now that I think about it.

One thing I did do was "recell" the system battery in my T540p (CR2032 type). I also did this to a few Dell Latitudes I bought and resold (they take batteries with wire leads and heatshrink wrapping, all were CR2032s). Real easy and convenient, but tape it up very tight if you try it yourself. I used 5 layers tape total.
Nearly all Thinkpads use CR2032 batteries with wires attached, from what I can tell going by pictures.
System batteries are cheap, if I recall correctly, but even cheaper are buying a full pack of CR2032s off Amazon. I have some lying around, may as well use them. The scale that I use to measure the weight of stuff I sell online also takes a CR2032. N64 game cartridges also take that battery type.

Some with EE skills think (correctly) they can do better recelling a battery with premium cells than rando chinks using used/inferior cells in new 3rd party batteries. obviously undervolt it. then get a low power ssd, they can surprisingly help a lot. p31 gold is a popular one. limit max cpu speed to 99% to stop the laptop from needlessly boosting. if you watch youtube, use h264ify. disable everything you dont regularly use in bios - bluetooth, usb ports, webcam, fingerprint, ethernet etc. if you use windows, use edge as your web browser and set it to efficiency mode.

oh and also limit the screen refresh to 48hz (or less if you're comfortable with that). if you cant do it directly from display settings you can use CRU to create a custpm resolution.

What upgrades should I do first?

Which ones are time sensitive, like "oh they aren't making X anymore so you better get a few now before they are price hiked"

I want to get a skin for it to protect it, are there any things I should do to the case and feet beforehand besides Magic Erase it?

Mine came with a skin on the top, hopefully it isn't hiding anything...

When upgrading your refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad T480, here are some recommendations:

## RAM Upgrade
One of the first upgrades to consider is increasing the RAM. The T480 supports up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM. More RAM will allow for better multitasking performance.[1]

## Storage Upgrade
Upgrading to a faster SSD will significantly improve overall system responsiveness. The T480 supports M.2 NVMe SSDs which offer much faster read/write speeds compared to SATA SSDs.[1]

## Display Upgrade
The T480 can be upgraded to a 2K (2560x1440) IPS panel which offers significantly better image quality over the stock 1080p panel. However, these 2K panels are becoming harder to find as the T480 ages, so you may want to secure one soon before prices rise.[4]

## Bottom Case Feet
The rubber feet on the bottom case can degrade over time. Consider replacing them with new ones to protect the chassis and improve grip.[5] Clean the bottom case thoroughly before applying new feet.

## Skin/Wrap
For protection, you can apply a vinyl skin or wrap to the lid and base. Make sure to thoroughly clean the surfaces first to ensure proper adhesion. Inspect the existing skin for any signs of damage before applying a new one.[5]

The hardware maintenance manual provides detailed instructions for all upgrades and replacements.[1] Ensure you have the proper tools and follow ESD safety precautions when working inside the laptop.

T14g2. Virtually same keyboard as T460s, roughly the same size, much better specs.
T14g1 is also an option if you're cheap, but wouldn't go lower than that, too old for a main machine.
T14g3+ is fucked wouldn't get it,

Any recommendations for a thinkpad? I'd be running Debian, would prefer it to be as a close to a modern m1 macbook air as possible. Mostly concerned about battery life, repairability, 1080p screen

I was thinking of doing this for my almost 15 year old X220 with the original CMOS battery. I don't think you need to tape it up "very tight" if you use kapton tape, that stuff is ultra sticky even with a single layer, and immune to high temps.

Should I wait until my computer starts throwing errors or go ahead and do it already? X220 is from 2011 or so, I bought mine in 2013.

Can someone explain this nonsense to a simple T480 owner?

Am I hearing that it is in fact possible for some enthusiasts to pull off a processor upgrade???
>>
>>100199904
Not him but what is there to understand? The x230 chipset is compatible 3612qe, it would be a straight forward drop-in replacement if the cpu was socketed, it's not so he only needs to desolder the old one and solder the new one through reballing.

I have heard mixed reviews about cheap reballing/hot-air stations from Aliexpress thoughever.

Also no idea about the thermals, declared tdp is just an estimation, with turboboost and max igpu usage a 35w tdp processor may well pull about 55w for a few seconds before throttling itself.
>>
>>100199941

I've just never heard of anyone going through the trouble to upgrade a soldered on processor.

But then again, I live under a rock and never consumed an Intel CPU more powerful than integrated ones.

K, I'll write a review of the business laptop I've been using for the last 5 months. It's Fujitsu S938. Its most direct competitor would probably be Thinkpad X390, I think. Mine came with Core i7-8650U and 24GB of RAM.

Let's start with the bad: the CPU is limited to 15W no matter what I do. I tried setting the TDP higher, but that's just gonna make the CPU compensate for it by lowering its power consumption more in the future. For example, if I set it to 20W it's gonna jump between 10W and 20W to maintain the 15W average overall. And there's really little point setting it to a higher TDPs in the first place, because the cooling system is small and silent, but pretty bad at actually dissipating heat. The CPU can easily reach 90-95C on warm days. And that's after I changed the thermal paste recently. Undervolting works well though and is a good way to raise performance. I'm running mine permanently undervolted by -100mV on CPU and CPU cache.

The keyboard is pretty good and the layout is very similar to modern Thinkpad keyboards (not the classic ones though). The touchpad sucks though. This is the first touchpad I've come across in a laptop from 2018 that works equally bad in Windows and in Linux. Touchpads in relatively modern machines like that usually work well in Windows at the very least. Not here though. Scrolling with two fingers is a chore, palm rejection leaves a lot to be desired, taps with three fingers are an impossibility. So it's better to just turn off taps altogether and use it with its physical left and right mouse buttons in the "classic" (shitty) way. It works, but you really want a Bluetooth mouse if you plan to use your cursor a lot.

This laptop is kinda unique in that it has a lot of features. Every unit comes with a DVD drive (something already almost unheard off in 13" portables in 2018). Mine also came with an LTE WWAN modem, which is actually pretty fast. I get 40Mbps download and 20Mbps upload which, believe it or not, is actually pretty good here in Europe in the specific place I live in. The battery is externally-removable, but it uses a kind of a funny mechanism where the battery is not held by its own shell but rather by a plastic cover put on top of it. Its capacity is also pretty large: 76Wh (mine is a bit degraded and only holds 68Wh). Battery lifetimes are quite good (6-7h) and the laptop consumes minimal amounts of energy idling with 100% brightness (7-9W).

Speaking of which, my unit came with a 1080p IPS display, which is nothing to write home about but gets the job done. The build quality is good as well. The palmrest part of the bottom chassis is metal and I'm pretty sure the upper chassis has metal underneath as well, it gets pretty cold to the touch. Other than that it's plastic, but pretty nice plastic. Overall I'm pretty pleased with it because it cost significantly less than a T480 or X390 with less features and worse specs would. I only paid 175 EUR for mine.

It has USB-C charging support (in addtion to a tradtional barrel plug), a full-size SD-card slot, HDMI, VGA, RJ-45, 3.5mm audio jack, 2 USB-A ports, SmartCard reader (which is useless to me) and a docking station connector at the bottom. What more could you possibly want?

does the X280 (or any *80 series ThinkPads) have any known issues with the trackpoint causing the system to freeze for short periods of time?
I recently got an X280 and had to return it because while using the trackpoint, the whole system would randomly freeze for up to 10 seconds every now and then. using only the touchpad, this wasn't an issue at all, and running a few diagnostics on the SSD, RAM, CPU etc. didn't show any errors. is this a known issue? They’re one of the few laptop companies that never really made a high end product tier. They have their predator gaming laptops which are better than the nitro stuff, but they’re still mostly just expensive due to pure hardware or size.

Their highest end conventional SKU is the Swift stuff? Which they’re just slightly nicer aspires usually with basic dgpus driving up the cost.

If you were to convert their entire lineup to business machines, they wouldn’t have a product equivalent for anything more than the thinkpad E or L series.
Which is fine. They know their market, and their market is millions of acer aspires.

They did try once in recent years, with the ConceptD line
These were like hybrid workstation machines. Probably look at this like the weird thinkbooks or a new Z series. It’s a tech showcase, it’s flashy, it’s specced well but it’s not exactly the same caliber as really high end mobile workstations.

And this just didn’t work for them. This came out right as Asus was doing the ProArt stuff, and now the market is full of other options like this, namely the Z series but also HP and their Spectres kinda got into this

They still sell some ConceptD models but they’re not as wide of a range as they tried.
Which is a shame because these are kinda cool, but the market that would buy these is far more likely to get a zen book duo
>>

S models basically stand for slim, physically thinner and often has compromises (smaller cooling, lower power limit, less keyboard travel, maybe no ethernet). You buy the T14s if you want something thinner and if you want thinner than that you buy an x1 carbon or w/e. You buy T14 if performance is more important than 2mm thinness and 0.4lbs less.

More importantly S models usually have soldered ram without slots these days.

I recently came across a like-new condition T420 for an excellent price. I installed Windows 7 and flashed the Oleh BIOS mod to remove any whitelists.
I want to install an LTE-capable WWAN card into the WWAN slot. I've already tried a Sierra Wireless Airprime and a Quactel EC25. I also tried a 3G Gobi3000 card.
The Sierra Wireless card causes a no boot condition with the 1-3-3-1 beepcode.
The EC25 and Gobi3000 is not detected by the laptop at all.
Are there any actual LTE cards that can be used in this hunk of junk or should i just throw it into a fire pit?

depends on the CPU, ram, and hard drive. I've picked up a t460 for $85 with an Intel core i5 6300u, 500gb SSD, and 8gb ram. x2#0 are typically more expensive due to the small form factor. if the x250 has 16 GB ram and an Intel core i7 then yeah I'd say it's worth $150. upgrading the drive is the easiest task and upgrading ram will require more work but still doable even if you've never done it before (there is prob at least 1 YouTube tutorial for your specific model). upgrading the CPU might require you to desolder the chip from your motherboard and resolder the new CPU to the motherboard. if the x250 is in near mint condition and has an i7 then go for it.

I plan to CNC the bottom plate and make a hole for the port, then I'd put it on a stand to make it easy to access. It should be very easy on the p50/p51 as they use a plastic cover for access to the m.2 slots, and don't need the entire bottom cover to be taken off. The only issue is the orientation of the slots as they are flipped the other way on the p51, so I may have to make a custom pcb with the slot on the other side to make it work. This part would be a lot easier on any other laptop.

>>
>>100246531
Well, its actually an auction, and I'm trying to figure out my sniping bid. What would you pay?
>>
>>100246546
that's worth way more than 430 and you probably won't get it.
>>
>>100246546
i would call it quits at 700. you can buy an entirely new one from lenovo for less than 1000 bux if you get a few discounts.

840 G5 for 97€. i found equivalent thinkpads much more expensive. did i get a good deal or is there a good reason for thinkpads to cost 50-100% more?
>>
>>100249517
great price

T14 gen 5 will have non-soldered ram, replaceable keyboard, ssd , ethernet port, battery. They pretty much have slapped QR codes on every replaceable part for easy repairs, as shown on MWC 2024.

> Guess the framework laptop did make their butthole clench after all.

I have a detached keyboard. Is this alright for browsing 4chan, typing on emacs, youtube/spotify, and doing some webdev?

So my galaxy tab a7 is going to crap. I'm thinking of just getting a small laptop to replace it. What do you guys recommend? Going to be using it for stuff like Kindle, pron and web browsing mostly. Though I will miss the vertical viewing of a tablet for manga.
>>
>>100186519
that device should be standard in restaurants. looks comfy
>>
>>100257153
I think it's for someone who is disabled.
>>
Should I just get a Framework?
>>
>>100257951

As a person with a Framework, I will tell you that the fans are very loud at full tilt. And if you're like me, you use it as a desktop replacement with a Thunderbolt 4 dock. The upgradability is really a bit overrated, most stuff is Framework-product only, so no custom mainboards, no custom displays, etc. The swappable modules are cool, but note that you should buy different ones for situational ports and multiples like USB-C and USB-As.

Also, they have extremely slow update times from manufacturer. You may be traditionally used to Dell/Lenovo releasing drivers and patches regularly. This does not happen on Frameworks. Security patches lag in particularity. I believe they are now just patching LogoFAIL.

My X220 has been sitting in the closet for a while because of a couple of issues
>display cable degrading, either freezing the image or horribly distorting
>WiFi card isn't fully working (finds wifi signals but will not connect/connects but no internet)
Anything else I should replace while I'm at it?

Is the X220 still the meme for a non-ME computer?
>>
had to replace the screen for my t420 :(
seller sent a glossy one, said whoops no refunds we pick at random
who does that?! i should have read but still, it said matte in the listing but description said glossy/matte at random.. just why
the more I look the more it seams the matte finish ones are lost to time, discontinued and when available, ludicrously priced - in the ball park of 150 - 200
dafuq
maybe it's time to try the 1080 screen mod? don't really want to do that, can't find those anymore either...
damn
wat do? glossy looks horrible- who da fuq do they even make glossy screens for?! my poor work horse... maimed...
>>
>>100267049
It works like this, sellers write WORD/SHIT because people want WORD, but they don't have WORD, so they always deliver SHIT.
Don't worry, we all've been there.

if I coreboot my t420 can I just stick any mini pcie wifi card in there? could I put a wifi 6E card in there? now wondering how to get those sexy antennae poking out of the thing
>>
>>100267049
t420 parts are fucked there's nothing good available.
i wanted an ips screen for mine but i can't even find a normal screen that's not discontinued.
>>
>>100268118
>>100267135
>>100267049
going for the B140HAN01.1 with a cable kit from ali express - it's not ips but imo that'll be too much power draw on top of the higher resolution, and i always have brightness way down anyway
so it'll basically be a full overhaul from here
coreboot
then get the i7 3632
then think ax200 wifi card
then drill into the side and shove some antennas in there
wondering now about the cpu fan, if only there was some piddly noctua i could throw in there...
>>
>>100268118
Might it be because we bought them all?
There's little difference between a T420 and a T430, and most bandwagoners bought the T420 for the Cool and Hip Classic ThinkPad©™ experience without needing to fiddle with the keyboard and the palmrest.
>>
>>100268247
yeah that'll be it for sure
t420 also has that magical meme number in there which alone makes it vastly superior to the... what was it called again? t430? lol what a lame name
>>
>>100266547
X220 still requires part of the IME firmware.
>>
>>100266547
its x230 now
>>
>>100268205
i always thought noctua would be cool, but just set thinkfan to not run at all until 80c, will be fine if on desk and if you are on the move set it to like level 2

desparately need new laptop. i think theres a sale but it's ending tonight, so i need to choose quick. which one?
>ThinkPad E16 Gen 1
>ThinkBook 16 Gen 6
>IdeaPad Slim 5 Gen 9 16"

Also Intel or AMD, I think all of them have various options? I want efficiency, low power use on idle, or low power tasks, but power in reserve for when I need bursts of it. I don't want it to be using too much power (AND THUS RUNNING HOT!) on idle.
