Buy a thinkpad x230 and install heads. Write protect the flash chip. Put nail polish on the screws and take high resolution pictures to ensure signs of tampering. Do NOT use a HDD or SSD. They have DMA so a malicious firmware could do a lot of damage, use of USB is preferred since they do not have DMA. Completely remove the microphone, sound card, webcam and the WWAN card from the laptop. Remove the fan to prevent binary acoustic data transmission. Replace the default wifi card with a supported atheros card. Disable wifi when not in use, preferably by physically removing the card. Make your own independent Linux distro from scratch. Most Linux distros value convenience over security and will thus never have good security. Your only option is to make your own. Use musl instead of glibc, Libressl instead of openssl, sinit instead of systemd, oksh instead of bash, toybox instead of gnu coreutils to reduce attack surface. Enable as little kernel modules as possible. Use a hardened memory allocator. Apply strong SELinux and sandboxing policies. Restrict the root account heavily to make sure it never gets compromised. Disable JavaScript and CSS in your browser. Block all FAGMAN domains in your hosts file. Monitor all network requests. Do not use a phone. Never speak near anyone who owns a phone, they are always listening. Never use any non-corebooted technology made after 2006. Never leave your devices unattended. Tape triple layer aluminum foil all around your room as tempest shielding. Type really quietly as defense against audio keylogging. Use ecc ram to minimize rowhammer and rambleed. Encrypt everything multiple times with various different encryption implementations. Compile everything from source. Use hardened compilation flags. Always read through the source before installing something if possible. Only use the internet when absolutely necessary.

I'm going to replace the screen of my T480 and I'm nervous about it. It's not that bad right? My only real experience with this kind of thing is that I replaced the fan in an X230. Will I be OK if I was able to do that successfully?

How collectible are some computers really? I have a lot of old hardware I’m trying to get rid of without just throwing it in the dumpster. Would like to see these things given to someone who might actually use them and not accumulate garbage tech for the sake of hoarding.

This is why you always check screen specs. Plug the serial into Lenovo's site and it will tell you what the specs on the screen are. Or were when it was built anyway.

Is there any sort of "goto" for a reasonably powerful thinkpad? I just want something that can actually run Simulink and compile LLVM (overnight) unlike my current X220.
Looking at a T490 with 16GB and the i7 which seems like good value for 400AUD but its been years since I looked at the laptop market.

Is there some kind of known failure mode where an X201 just shits itself? Plug light comes on, little Z power light comes on, nothing else works after the little flash on turn on – not even BIOS screen. It’s not the display because the Thinklight isn’t even working

>>
>>100289166
It's enough of a jump you'll probably notice but - how is your current workload is being handicapped by the T440p? Hard to recommend upgrading if the current hardware is getting the job done.
>>
>>100289221
My T440p is heating up constantly and the HDD can be slow sometimes. Other than that... it's working fine. 95% of the time I only use Firefox, sometimes VLC.
>>
>>100287045
Yeah, at least it wasn't very expensive. Going to toy around with it and keep an eye out for an FHD; notwithstanding the shitty TN viewing angles I love this thing. Keyboard isn't as pleasantly chunky as the x230 but I'm pretty sure that's an inescapable reality of moving to anything newer.

Decided on getting a ThinkPad E16 Gen 1.
I'm looking at different configurations, and noticed something weird.
If I go the Intel path I have the option of a 47Wh or a 57Wh battery.
But when I choose AMD there's no option, only 47Wh.
I wanted to go AMD but not at the cost of a smaller battery. IntelAviv for me I guess.

But why would this be the case?

Seriously, how can anyone go back to an other laptop after using a ThinkPad? Having a middle click button is a gamechanger for how a I use browse the web on a laptop. I could never go back to right clicking and then clicking 'open in new tab', or having to hold Ctrl with my other hand to click on a link.

How is it no other manufacturer has tried to copy having a middle click button on their laptops?
It's actually kind of a bad thing, because now I'm locked into one range of one manufacturer. It should be a laptop standard.

This, and the keyboards being (marginally now) superior to the competition is the only reason I've stuck with Lenovo. It actually irritates me when I have to use a laptop without a pointing stick (Dell and HP both tried this for a time and gave up) and middle click button (which I don't think any other mfg ever caught onto).

P14s Gen 4 thoughts.

>Model
Ryzen 7840U
Radeon 780M
64gb RAM
1TB NVME
OLED Screen (2880x1800)
52.5 Wh battery

Running it on Fedora. My first impression is that the new keyboards are pretty alright in terms of key feel, not really too different from the classic keyboard modded T430 I have. Less travel, but still the same tactility. The layout is worse, but not a deal breaker for me. Aesthetically speaking, it's no competition; the classic keyboard still kicks ass there.

The speakers are complete garbage on Linux by default, but thankfully someone made a EasyEffects preset for this laptop which improves it greatly. https://github.com/m4tx/thinkpad-p14s-g4-linux/#sound

The efficiency of the CPU is pretty good. I'm usually topping out a 6 watts when just doing basic browsing, and 15-20 watts when doing productivity work loads. The laptop is barely warm to the touch, though the fans are quite loud. Still miles away from the noise of my T430.

The screen is very beautiful. It has a matte finish, which is not my preference for OLED, but it's not too bad and the pixel density is strong enough to where any dulling of sharpness is reasonably compensated for. 90hz is just right for a laptop display.

The battery life is less impressive. It's probably a combination of a Linux and OLED issue, though. I should have gone for the lower resolution screen if I wanted to prioritize battery life, and while doing basic tasks it's really not so bad. If I were to just do basic browsing on 4chan and writing in word documents, it would last 8 hours or so. If I introduce videos into the mix, it tanks to 3 hours while streaming. The hardware decoding situation for AMD on Linux is pretty jank by comparison to Intel. I could get it working in Firefox, but not Chromium based browsers. Which would be fine, but Firefox seems to load the CPU more heavily than Chromium for whatsoever reason. Intel is still a better experience than AMD on Linux for video playback.

Redpill me on these IR webcams.

Sup faggots,
Tempted to buy a refurbished t490s.
Intel i5-8365U @1.60 16GB RAM 256GB SSD Win 11 Pro

For $400 Aussie dollarydoos. That's about $265 burger bucks.

Good deal or nah. It looks to be properly refurbished, good battery, the dealer offering 3 month warranty etc.
Am I just better off getting a t480?
Really just want something for browsing, streaming, and occasionally using office packages when not using my actual work laptop.

Weight isn't totally critical but being easier to travel with something does ad some points.

Cheers ThinkPad autists for potentially saving me from just buying a new laptop like a goy.

>>100303919
Good point. But for $1,200 I can't think of anything great. Laptops will be a bit faster but not a major upgrade. Only thing I can think is a macbook, but that will be more like $2,000. Maybe you can get an OK PC build for $1,200?
>>
>>100304092
at that price you could probably get a new 13th gen i5 t14/p14, depends how important a new battery is to you
>>
>>100304169
Well this would just be a personal laptop for me. I guess if you need it for work, you could get your company to pay for it or just build a PC. I should probably research more about framework. There has to be some catch. The used parts are probably a monopoly or something that cost 10x more so it becomes unfeasible to repair. This is a similar situation for fairphone. Parts for older devices are conviently sold out 99% of the time so the ability to repair your phone is useless. I also don't think you can upgrade the CPU on the laptop, which is what people buy new laptops for.

can you transplant x230 keyboard ribbon onto x220 keyboard
broke part of the cable on x220 keyboard and i want to transplant it from x230, so far doesnt seem to be working at all and the capslock button light up at "start", doesnt boot, poweron button doesnt light up on press and screen always black

x230 ribbon works on x220 keyboard
i had to remove tape from the pins and it now works fine

Is there any advantage with soldered RAM or are manufacturers just trying to squeeze money out of buyers?
>>
>>100314633
They can make the laptop thinner.
>>
>>100314552
The sturdiness, I can grab from the side and lift and it doesn't creak, the keyboard doesn't cave in, the screen has metal hinges so it doesn't wobble and I can just open it normally without worrying about it snapping. Also the touchpad is good enough that I'm willingly using gestures.
>>
>>100314633
My guess is soldered ram is an automated process in manufacturing vs someone physically installing the stick of memory in which would mean access to the inside of the unit also becomes more important and more complex? Not to mention the fact that something that is automated and not made to be open means less mistakes less problems with manufacturing and therefore cheaper.
The planned obsolescence as a bonus is just the icing on the cake
>>
>>100314633
Allows the memory chips to be physically closer to the CPU, which is more important at higher speeds

They put their charging ports on a daughter board instead of soldering it, which means they are more easily repairable than a ThinkPad and will last longer. ThinkPad is just chinese tech that lives off of its name, but doesn't offer anything better than the competition anymore.

I can't decide between a T480 and Fujtsu Lifebook E449. Both have the same specs for the same price. Fujtsu probably has a better quality because it's Japanese and not Chinese, but worse keyboard and touchpad, and getting replacement parts for it might be more difficult.

I have no idea what to replace the X230 with. Only thing I'm certain about is that I want a 16:10 screen, which you can only find in x13 g2 and up going for like 600-700 euros...

There are many types of people in this thread. Hard core brand loyalists like yourselves who will be using their thinkpad even after it’s 20 years old claiming it’s still usable with Linux if you just weren’t such a codelet.
There are people who just want a cheap laptop to do what they need.
There are shills like someone pointed out.
And there are people who don’t care and would like good recommendations for a laptop.

As it stands today thinkpads in general prior to the t480 have ceased to be a good recommendation for anyone but brand loyalists.
To advise someone who just wants a laptop to spend 200 plus euros/usd on used components or of dubious origin and quality is beyond ridiculous. To even suggest any laptop prior to the t480 for general purpose is tone deaf.
Yes thinkpads are great. I own three but they have stopped being a good laptop to recommend. Even anything above the x220 is not recommended because of the advantages that the prior thinkpads had. The new keyboards aren’t as nice, nor is the layout, nor is the build quality. Thinkpads are a hobbiest computer. And if you can’t understand any of this, that different people have different needs, skills and consider different things to be valued higher or lower than what you consider them to be, you may literally be diagnosed with autism level 1 and should see a physician.

Basically the old ones are still good if all you need is 2023-2024 Chromebook performance and don't mind the tradeoff in heat/power/battery to gain a better keyboard (and even then the GPU on a Chromebook is miles better). And/Or your hobby is tinkering. They are most definitely hobbyist machines. Even the T480 shilling is cope.

>>100341050
T14 gen 1 and T495 is the new t480, you can get them for $200-300 and the AMD ones shit on the Intel.

I don't understand the swappable battery meme because the new CPUs are more efficient and you can still take the bottom off and replace the battery if you want. I can get 8hrs of use out of my T14 4650u and 10 if I go to battery saving mode, and it can be charged by my phone charger as well as car charger. Hell you can use a usb battery pack if you want and have a spare battery you can use for other things as well with you. With battery saving mode it's still faster than a T480.

I don't understand the build quality complaints either. It still realistically won't break ever. Keyboard is still good.

i have a laptop from 2014 with a i7 4500u and an nvidia 750m i keep as a backup in case my main machine breaks. it's still working (i upgraded the ram to 16gb and replaced the dvd drive with an hdd caddy) but i'm thinking of buying a new one

where i live i can buy a laptop with a i7 13450hx + 3050 for a decent price. i can take out the 8gb ram, upgrade to 2x16gb and also upgrade the nvme to either a 500 gb (2230) / 1tb (2280). i should be able to use both according to a teardown i saw i think, i don't think it'd make sense to have the slots and not be able to use both at the same time? it comes with 256 gb one, i might just keep it and only buy an nvme to use on the remaining slot

anyway i'm looking for reasons not do it. it comes with linux but i'll probably install windows 11 and debian on it. i'm thinking i might just be getting the urge to consoom. my biggest problem with the current notebook is that it can't run windows 11 and i can't get a specific game to run on bottles in linux because the flatpaks seemingly detect only the intel igpu and that's not powerful enough to run it (i gave up trying to make bottles detect the nvidia gpu)

thanks for reading my blog

>>
>>100352686
It's part of the reason it's cheap, or rather the main reason. 8gb on LTSC is fine for the basic shit it's going to be used for, it's being used for stuff that a Chromebook can do. It's not for myself it's for my gf that's a weakling and she really doesn't like carrying her 4.6lbs Acer with a shitty atom. The X1C7 is pretty damn premium and that hardware in 2.4lbs. She thinks the T14 I have is "big and heavy" too (3.3lbs?) and doesn't care about how slow her current acer is so I went form factor #1 priority. It's also going to apply as a fashion object to her in a way so the thin laptop is a priority.

what in the world are you on about?

Thinking of picking up a minimal spec T480s with 8GB memory, 128GB SSD and 1080p screen @$150 then upgrading it myself, including the screen to a glossy 1440p 500nit display. Total it'll cost me is about $250-$260.
Right now I'm wondering how good the display options are on the T14G1 AMD? I'm tired of using my X230's shitty 768p screen so I'm really looking forward to a good display.

Can anybody else vouch that Dell parts are cheaper than Lenovo? That's been my experience dealing with official service centers from those two directly.

I replaced the screen on my t470s and the reused bezel worked for the most part. On the bottom right where I first separated the bezel the plastic will not connect completely. Which means regardless of how many times i connect it back together it always works its way loose again.
It's functional and I think if I were to buy some adhesive it would be better but it is not perfect.

So how do I know if an ebay machine is good or not to buy, outside of the obvious battery, cpu, ram and whatnot?
I want a t480 but there are several hundred ebay offers and they all look pretty ok except the ones that straight up say some shit don't work
>>
Just bought a Thinkpad for $400. Good price, I think :)
>>
>>100357605
Its a roll of the dice which is part of the fun. My aforementioned t470 was in great condition but the lcd had a bright spot which is why I replaced the screen.
It would have probably been cheaper to just buy a new machine but that is boring.
>>
>>100357702
>It would have probably been cheaper to just buy a new machine
the t480 on ebay are at most $150 though. I highly doubt you'd get a decent new laptop for that price.
>>
>>100357770
its a great deal if you are happy with the machine but if you start buying new batteries, replacement ips panels, new keyboards, and what not it adds up quick.
that is my only point.

Does anybody have any experiences with HP Dragonflies?

Any thoughts on this newer thinkpad model?
Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 1. NVIDIA RTX A1000. Intel Core i5 12600HX, 16GB ram. Numpad. Like $900 though.

How good of an idea is it to by a t430 that the seller says "boots to bios, no hdd included"?
it's very cheap compared with the other ones that do include hdd and os and shit

What's a powerful enough ThinkPad that I can get for kernel programming (going to need to be able to compile the kernel relatively fast)?

Bonus points for a dedicated GPU (for basic AI work for uni) and decent screen out-of-the-box.

Wanted to use my trusty T420 for this stuff, but it doesn't seem like it can take the load (hehe)
>>
>>100359314
>that I can get for kernel programming
pretty sure anything is good enough for that
>be able to compile the kernel relatively fast
define "relatively fast". My core2duo x61 can compile the linux kernel in like 3h which is incredibly fast for it's age.
>>
>>100359057
sometimes they are stolen and have that bios compusave lock on it and its a bitch to get rid of
>>
>>100359349
I'm taking a course where you need to compile the kernel like a gazillion times in a week, and doing that takes ridiculously long on my T420 compared to my PC at home.

I want something faster than the T420 so that I won't have to kill myself.

Also T420 can't run basic "babby's first AI" models for uni, which sux too I guess

Ebay is used Thinkpad heaven, but choosing an older machine like that means you're unlikely to get something pristine. Stick with the newer models and you can get killer value for your money.
>>
How long are you guys able to use the nipple on your thinkpad per day? After a few hours of alternating between my index finger and middle finger they both sting a little when I press on the nipple. I don't think I'm pressing down too hard
>>
>>100361676
The first time I bought a used thinkpad it was a t430 for about $200 and I still love that chunky boy to death. Although I probably spent too much. $120 is an easy yes for me.

Generally speaking if I'm sitting down for a marathon I want proper external peripherals and a dock.

It's more about what tasks you're doing and how efficient you are. For quick stuff where I'm not moving it far, it's fine and I can use it indefinitely. There are tasks it's slower to do with the trackpoint. If I'm on multiple monitors going back and forth, I'll give up immediately and look for a proper mouse and room to swing my arm. Also makes a difference how much you adopt keyboard shortcuts and/or how optimized your tasks are for them. You can avoid a mouse altogether for some stuff. You might also try different trackpoint nubs. If "cat's tongue" or "classic dome" aren't doing it for you, some people swear by "soft rim."

so I'm trying to replace the palmrest on my T410 and the screw for the keyboard is royally stripped beyond repair (will not clarify whether or not this is my fault)
how do I get it out?
>>
>>100367884
Spray WD40 around the screw and let it sit overnight. Then get some thin rubber and use that as a barrier between the screw and a screwdriver, and put a lot of pressure and start turning slowly. Pray to any deity that it actually starts to turn.
>>
>>100367884
>>100369317
This. And if that doesn't work, use a screw extractor bit or just drill out the head. There will be enough of the screw (stem) itself to grab with pliers and untwist after you take it apart.
