I got a T430 that "turns on but it's just a black screen". I suspected it was a corrupted bios or something so I desoldered the two bios chips. The 8MB one cannot be read, flashrom running on a RPi doesn't detect the chip. The other, 4MB one, is detected and can be read.

Every unbricking guide I have found starts with having a backup of the original bios which I cannot get because it appears the 8MB chip is damaged. Is there a way to fix this or am I SOL?

What do you think about L16 with this config:

Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 7735U processor (2.70 GHz up to 4.75 GHz)
Memory: 32GB DDR5-5600MHz (SODIMM)
Hard Disk: 1 TB SSD, M.2 2280, PCIe 4.0, TLC, Opal
Camera: 5MP RGB and infrared camera with two microphones
Battery Pack: 3 cells lithium polymer, 57 Wh

Should be decent for software development? L16 looks like a nice jump from L15. DDR5 and 300 cd/m2 IPS screen.
But there are no reviews online yet.

a fair warning, avoid ch341a. Older versions have 5v voltage issue and might fry the chip, while newer often do not provide enough power, so you would have to use external power supply. Raspberry pi or similar board with decent gpio is really worth it. Skulls have pre-made script that automates all the software tinkering for you
>>
>>101106433
No, leave it alone. Not worth the disassembly time and effort right now to net a low single digit temp reduction. Id be amazed if it idled under 43 degrees brand new.

>>101106925
Pure FUD. I've used my CH341A for dozens of flashes without any issue. The power delivery will be 3.3V, which is all that matters. Some may output 5V on the data lines, but in practice this isn't a problem as any 3.3V chip can safely handle 5V logic.

I found a used T480 on Ebay with core i5, 16gb ram, 500gb HDD, that claims it's in good quality. But it has a 1366x768 TN panel and I don't have the money to get a new one. It's on its way, it cost me $200 CAD (about $150 usd). Good deal? Should I expect it to be beaten up? The seller has a good rep. I've never had this laptop before and never had a laptop with a 768p screen so I'm not sure what to expect.

>>101110312
The main issue is the awful resolution, a 14" or larger laptop should at least have a more useful resolution like 1440x900 or 1680x1050, if not FHD.
Also the HDD is a crippling bottleneck in a modern system so yeah, swap it out for an SSD as soon as you can.
>>
>>101110375
It's a big university that only sells stuff off locally. All the surplus computers go through it so there's always a pretty constant supply. After a month of being available they start taking 20% off each week, so sometimes you can get some pretty nice stuff for under $50

X220 apparently doesn't have the best chassis
Should I re-chassis/reinforce mine which is falling apart, if so, how? (I would probably get a new palmrest, then have to try fixing the bezel and maybe replace the part just in front of the palmrest on the left; I think I would also get a new battery in this endeavor)

Or just get another Thinkpad?

I travel to many different houses, and not all of them have TVs capable of just letting me hook up my external HDD with all my anime on it. Some hardware issues, some have software issues and dont like the file types.
I am looking into getting a thinkpad so I can plug my HDD into that, and then just run an HDMI from the laptop to the TV.

Thinkpads are absolute dogshit in 2024.
The older ones are easy to work on and have a retro look but they are poorly built and not powerful enough for most users.
The modern ones have better build quality but are not as easily repaired or upgraded. Most models have cooling problems and shit firmware.

The ethos of this general still applies, buy older enterprise machines, but thinkpads are a bad meme.

It's not enough. It's annoying to keep the battery in order with this little battery power, so I will just keep it charging 24/7.
>>
>>101118719
I mean. To be fair, it was intended to be a business laptop, made just to be plugged to AC adapter 24/7.
>>
>>101118736
Well, I have an x270, the battery is a little old and the internal battery is missing so maybe a fresh thinkpad could've easily done 6-7 hours.
Which would make it a lot easier to NOT have it plugged in 24/7.
>>
>>101118436
My T14 AMD 4650u gets about 6 hours of super mario 64 co-op and my X1 Carbon i5-8365u gets about 8 hours of super mario 64 co-op.

T14 gets up to 10hrs on battery saver and low brightness, watching streams or whatever.

Between those 2 CPUs, the AMD one is slower and will get less battery life, but the GPU will be much faster. AMD isn't better CPU wise until the 4000 series in laptops.

>>
>>101117091
As >>101119879 said, the AMD is not better except in graphics. Which frankly is what shows its age soonest in aging hardware IMO. If it's something you are going to drive til the wheels fall off, it might be the better choice even if it's worse on paper.

L series being bad is old information. New consensus is that Ls are fine. They got better, Ts got worse. Ls are only slightly thicker yet still slightly more fragile than Ts. Weirdly many of them retained dual RAM slots throughout the last several years of design abortions from Lenovo. They'd be more popular if people would bother to do any amount of research.

People have been arguing about the CH341A for years now. It seems safer to avoid it if you didn't already get one. So while the people (probably one dude honestly) who always complain they have one that works fine will get defensive about the thing they use, someone who hasn't already bought a flasher still shouldn't get one I think.
This also reminds me of people gaslighting each other in the GitHub issues for pico-flasher (used to dump and flash the Xbox 360 NAND with a Pi Pico) and saying people with problems must have bad or fake Picos, which is definitely not true. It's just shitty unreliable firmware from what I could tell. You'd sometimes get partially successful flashes with a bit of corruption, sometimes couldn't read the NAND at all to dump it. Sure it worked fine sometimes but it was very unreliable so it was worth it to get a dedicated known-good flasher instead. In that case I got the XFlasher 360 which is made specifically for 360 modding, so I don't know what I'd recommend for *boot flashing. I always heard good things about the FT232H and I recall it being pretty affordable, but there might be a better option these days.
Pine64 used to have something but I don't know if they still sell it.
>>
>>101106433
Try a small undervolt first. It tends to lower temps more than a repaste anyway. Save the repasting for when you take it apart to upgrade something else anyway.
>>
>>101127701
The problem with the CH341A has never been the power delivery, it will output 3.3V just fine on that line, regardless if it's the variant that outputs 5V on the data. The issue is people often use the shitty clip that comes with it instead paying an extra $10 for a Pomona clip with proper length F-F cables.

I have a T420 model that came with a i5-2520M CPU and worked just fine. Recently bought an i7-2670MQ and replaced the old CPU but when it boots it gives error “0190 Critical low-battery error”. I managed to boot it boot it by plugging the battery instead of just using the AC cord, the problem is now windows pop-up a message; “Incorrect AC adapter is attached. This AC adapter cannot provide enough power for normal operation of your computer.
You may be able to charge your battery with this AC adapter if your computer is in sleep or shut-down states.”

Why all of the sudden the AC adapter is not compatible?

Is the t480 an actual meme? I want to get the dgpu model but I'm reading stories about thermal throttling and dying thunderbolt ports(though I think this one is fixable with a firmware upgrade or something).
I have a fully upgraded t440p(i7-4712mq) and I'm just a bit worried that it'll perform worse than it somehow. It also doesn't have the bottom connector so I'll need to buy a new dock.
I'm also on the lookout for an i7 t470p with dgpu, but I've never seen one in the used market here. I know the gpu is worse on this one but since it's chunkier I'm thinking it would have better thermals, plus I wouldn't have to buy a new dock.

>a weird buzz from the power supply
Inductors, when they die, tend to make buzzing sounds. If everything still works as it should, then you have nothing to worry about. Most of the time, they are labeled "Lxx" on circuit boards and tend to be big blocks. You might even be able to get a peek at the copper coil inside, in some cases. Sometimes, they are simply small transformers of sorts meant to filter out RFI. Some will be tiny black pieces, akin to SMD resistors, but black color instead. If there were to be nothing powering on and you hear a whine coming from the power supply, it is definitely a dead transformer in need of replacing.

I've seen people lay a thin handkerchief/lint free cloth across the keyboard before closing the laptop. idk how effective it is long term. All these remarks and more I've seen across the web makes we want to take a shot at selling improved housings/cases for laptops made of tougher materials or straight up steel, but I don't have the funding and means to go for it. Or maybe some clip-on reinforcements that make machines more rigid.

And before you say "steel too heavy", a laptop casing of tempered steel that is under 1-1.2lbs. on its own and tough as a battletank's armor is totally doable. Such steel is easy to find in cookware, for instance.

Alas, corpos lean harder into planned obsolescence and shamelessly call it "revolutionary and innovative" while laughing at the masses and their ignorance and compliance.

What would be the best replacement for my Framework 13 that isn't cucked by modern computer trends, while being small, repairable, inexpensive, and practical?

I love the Framework, but it's a baseddev laptop lol. I'll change my mind when prices drop significantly and coreboot is supported. Once that happens it'll win over >=2020 model thinkpads I bet.
It's extremely expensive and needlessly fast, like what's the point of DDR5 and Gen5 NVMe? But I think the X270 is my ideal choice, but how good is the i7-7600U dual core cpu for modded minecraft and simple rhythm games at 1080@60FPS? Idk lol

I am a researcher (physics) and I cringe whenever a student takes out his (yes, his, almost no girls here) thickpad to show a presentation. Especially if something goes wrong, most often a projector is not working properly. He then starts typing furiously in a terminal or a browser to fix an issue, wasting my and everyone's time. One hilarious case when a guy tried to then upload slides to a thumb drive and he could not.
I applaud their tenacity to endlessly fix stuff, but in the end, it is a reinvention of a wheel - we have laptops that work. In my experience, not once a macbook had this issue despite people reeeing they are a closed garden. Windows laptops fail, but rarely (1 in 100 cases in my memory).
>>
>>101157030
Another fun case was when I held a course on some simulations. We asked people to install some needed software in advance (windows only). One student came with, again, a thickpad with a virtual machine, assuring me it
>worked yesterday
and infinitely had random issues like not being able to use a usb-key we had to use to activate the software, or random crashes. Don't know what VMs macs used, but they faced 0 issues even though they were visibly not computer geeks.

my x61t doesn't do youtube very well (ancient gma965 graphics + modern youtube bloat means 720p is pushing it and 1080p is not gonna happen) but it does 4chan browsing just fine without getting that hot. I have the beefier heatsink/heat pipe in it, and I dont know what the cooling setup on the 220 is, but I feel like 90C from lite to moderate usage is a bit excessive. Did you try cleaning out the fan/radiators really well? Could the fan itself be running slower than it should be? maybe try replacing the thermal paste with something thats higher end like arctic silver/etc?

I was looking at doing the pinmod on the x61 series that increases your CPU speed by increasing the FSB from 200 MHz to 266 MHz, but didnt like the idea of physically cutting a trace on the mobo.

However, recently I saw that for god knows what reason, installing a specific dell wifi card has the same effect. (as does -again for god knows why- shorting pins 24 and 52 of the left mPCIe slot)

Now this is something that I could see myself doing. Another step in the process however is using a program called "rweverything" to do something with the EEPROM in the RAM or something to make it run at a frequency that is compatible with the new FSB clock speed. I downloaded this tool, and for the most part I have no fucking clue what I'm looking at.

Has anybody tried this kind of overclock before?
Can you really just modify the clock speed of components with this "rweverything" tool? Would this work on more modern computers as well? Even ones which are not normally unlocked to allow this? Is there a guide or something on how to use this rweverything tool or other spd tools that will teach me 1) How to do a specific thing and 2) (just as important) *what* I am actually doing (so that I am not just blindly following instructions and actually understand what I'm doing)

>>tldr: what exactly is "rweverything", how do I use it, what can it do, how does it work, etc
>>
>"RWEverything is quite a powerful utility designed along with hardware engineers, firmware (BIOS) engineers, driver developers, QA engineers, performance test engineers, and diagnostic engineers in mind. That being said, it's important to note that this is geared towards experienced users, any modifications made to your hardware settings very well could damage your system if something goes wrong. Use this product at your own risk."
Definitely find a specific guide in web search if no one chimes in on this overclock mod.

>built myself a maxed out T420 back in the day
>all the various doodads and doohikies like docking station, docking station slice battery so I can run a secondary 9 cell, etc
>Eventually my father was in need of a laptop specifically to use in the garage as something to hook up to the garage TV for music, movies, and to interface with the OBD2 to tune his project car
>Gave him the T420 because I had graduated college by this point and no longer needed a laptop
>set up the docking station and various software he needs
>fast forward to today
>the 9 cells, both primary and slice no longer hold a charge for longer than 20 min each so the laptop is permanently tethered to its charger
>eBay 9 cells have all been shit as well
>father is REFUSING to let go of the T420 even as I've offered to get him something new

What is a more modern model of Thinkpad that can do the same job he wants? He specifically loves being able to dock and undock the laptop as needed.
>>
>>101169925
Any thinkpad that has a dock RETARD
>>
>>101169965
Which one FAGGOT? There's shit loads. What's the most modern that won't cost an arm and a leg?
>>
>>101169755
Can't get AMD in my cunt, they are both Intel, the X1 gen10 has a 1240p and the T14 gen4 has a 1335u. The rest of the specs are pretty similar, but the X1 is slightly thinner and lighter.

T480

Use remote desktop or install Anydesk on the T420 and automatically fullscreen remote to a better machine at startup. Let him keep his old man computer.

Then buy him a good one. Does Kingsener not make a T420 battery?

they do, or atleast t430 battery will work in t420

How do you feel buying a used laptop, knowing that a previous owner scratched his ass while using it, stuffing crumbles of shit in all seams which will never be cleaned out completely.
Or he was gooning to degenerate porn and stained the chassis with his semen. You do use UV light before buying, right?
How a repairman installed just barely working hardware and kept good parts to himself only to sell them to you later at a markup due to shortages of old parts.
How even though it's "like new" there are still stains on a touchpad that remind that you are a
poorfag
.
Are you also willing to get a used goods gf?

And then 60 EUR for a new battery otherwise it is a gimped desktop (who am I kidding you can only buy a Chinese knockoff that will explode while you sleep). And 50 EUR for a new keyboard because the old is shit and has some weird European layout. And 100+ for an IPS screen, and so on.
Just buy new ffs, stop being a laughingstock.

>>101172152
I did not call you cattle, I called you retards who think they save money by buying used, but in the end you pay almost the same considering replacement parts, lost convenience and wasted time. Sure, if you are a kid/undergrad it's fine, but a 20+ guy should be able to easily afford a new laptop and get on with his life. You are american/european (hopefully) not indian, so you have the means.
I would accept if you said it's just a hobby, but you claim like you cracked the code. You did not.

Why do you care so much if someone buys a used thinkpad? What do you stand to lose? Are you some applel/chinkshit seller?
>>
>>101172197
anyway anons, this is so fucking frustrating. I have T14 gen 3 but that would last like 4hours.. i had to take my T480 (with low power igzo display upgrade) to this conference where there are no power plugs on the tables. The normie laptops already died after few hours of use and they had to put them near the wall where the socket is to charge them.

I want something with more modern CPU, but there is simply nothing else like T480.. all thinkpads above T480 have SHIT battery life that wont last whole day.

what is the difference between t480s and t480?

Just hoping it has pretty ok specs. Took a bit of a gamble on it, since ThinkPads are usually way overpriced here.

Where the fuck can I buy a thinkbook plus gen 4 with the oled/eink combo? I was sleeping and didnt see it come and go.
>>
Welp I bought an used Precision 3551. The listing said it wouldn't come with a GPU but the one I got did come with the Quadro P620. Godamn it made the heat, noise and battery issues worse. Turning it off in the Nvidia control panel did remove most issues.

Also I'm bummed out also that it came with 2x8gb sticks rather than 1x16gb like Dells often do. Means I can't upgrade to 32gb for cheap.
>>
Is the T14g5 repairability a one time thing or will they continue the repairability schtick going forward?
>>
Looking for a laptop to replace x230, and dear god, used thinkpads are overpriced in Europe. Looking for something not ancient to future-proof, but T14 with 16Gb start at 600eur + likely will need a new keyboard, fuck qwertz. Come on, T14 gen1 is 5 yo.

How much should I be spending on an x61?
>>
>>101180077
max 50 usd
>>
>>101180077
not many get listed anymore so depends how bad you want it... I honestly think jvscholz had a big impact on the desirability of such a machine in the past few years.

the supply for these older 4:3 machines has been drying up for a while now, only common one is the 14" T60 which people try and sell for retarded amounts on ebay and they just sit. 15" T60's still pop up relatively often, I just picked up a UXGA T60p with a 9-cell for 100 usd in decent condition but you've gotta check often

Thanks, I had an x60 pop up locally for 75 but the boomer selling it doesn't know the specs. He gave me two "serial numbers" but none of them work on https://tp.krelay.de/index.php so I have no idea what he has. Unfortunately, I can't get put these numbers into Lenovo or IBM's website. Is there any other way to know what specs he has? The computer is in decent condition.
>>
>>101181162
I'm not sure, I only use the site you linked. I think most x60's have 32-bit cpus so chances are it's one of those. I'd just ask him for an image of the part that shows the mtm number personally.

I will note that if you just want a 4:3 laptop, I'd recommend getting a used 15" T60/T60p with a flexview panel. I'm typing on a T601f right now with a NOS SXGA+ panel and it seriously looks fantastic. There's an SXGA+ AFFS screen for the X60/X61 but I think they're extremely rare and expensive (and there's lots of fakes). T60 is socketed too so you can just pop a T7600 in there and call it a day.

ask him to boot into bios and take pic of the screen
