Hello /g/uys. What would be the best course of action for someone who want a new build without a GPU but still being capable for one later on? It will mainly be for multitasking, since games that I usually play are from 2010-ish or before. Should I get an AMD APU? Thanks.
I’m going for a 4080 S but I’m stuck between: PNY RTX 4080 Super Verto triple fan OC for $950OrPNY XLR8 4080 Super Verto Epic - X triple fan OC. For $1000I don’t care for the RGB so is there any reason to get the xlr8 over the slightly cheaper version?

Installed a new card (PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT) but the monitor I have now doesn't have a DisplayPort port so I can't get 144hz out of it (used to get 144hz with a DVI which the new card doesn't have a port for, and HDMI doesn't get me 144hz) so I'm looking for a new monitor with a proper Displayport port to fit it.https://www.amazon.com/Sceptre-FreeSync-DisplayPort-Speakers-E248B-FPT168/dp/B088VMY23MI saw this on Amazon, does it look any good? >>101105741The XLR8 is the best you'll get at that price, the only thing I'd consider an upgrade from it would be the MSI Suprim X or ASUS Strix.Considering how good its thermals are and how high it can clock despite the locked TDP, I think it's nearly impossible to run into reliability issues.See pic related, it beats top-tier cards on quiet BIOS with thermals not far from the top performers. It won't overclock as high as unlocked TDP cards but it's not recommended to do so on 4080S anyways. It's much better to undervolt to get same/better performance than stock with lower power consumption.
>>101105688If it's an old HDMI cable, you'll need a better one that supports higher bandwidth. Not all HDMI cables are equal. There are DisplayPort to DVI adapters, but you'll likely need a Dual Link one to achieve 144hz, and those are pricey and finicky.

>>101109370You need to run hardware monitoring. The easiest way to do this is using Geforce statistics/performance overlay. If you have the Geforce overlay enabled, you can toggle the statistics with Alt+R. If your GPU is at or near 100% utilization, it's the limit, and if not, your CPU is likely the limit. >I can't seem to hold 144fps in a lot of (older) modern games. Like No Man's Sky, Tarkov, The FinalsFirst, you don't necessarily need to hold 144 FPS. If fact a lot of games won't. Make sure you have an adaptive sync capable monitor and have G-sync enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel. If you don't have an adaptive sync monitor, time to upgrade. A game like EFT needs a stronger CPU than you have for excellent performance, for instance a 5700X3D. If you play a lot of multplayer games, you should prioritize a CPU with strong gaming performance (cores are almost irrelevant). >7950X3D thermal paste styleWhat's the best way to apply paste for a 7950X3D? Dot in the middle? Dot slightly below the middle? Line horizontal or vertical? X / cross? Something else? I have an AIO (Liquid Freezer III) and the AM5 Thermal Grizzly mounting frame + gasket (I am not sure if I'm going to use this or not, but I will at least use the gasket). I have Prolimatech PK-3 (older, leftover but still good), and new Arctic MX-6 and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme, the last of which I'm thinking about using. Of course, this is all assuming the AIO doesn't have applied paste already on it which it very well might, but still, good to know. >Arctic Liquid Freezer III inverted mounting I have a Crosshair X670E Extreme board which is one of those that in the normal arrangement, the the LF3's tubing will bang into (or will come damn close to) the heatsink directly below the socket. LF3 has a built in offset with its rather unique mount. Has anyone tried flipping it 180 degrees so the tubing faces up the board instead of down? An Arctic rep even told me I could do that, but I'd need to watch my temps but didn't specify as to why. However, the schematics of the drawing and mount etc.. suggest that it will retain the "proper" lower offset since the decision for the offset is not the block itself but the mounting brackets, so long as you don't reverse them you should be okay. So is the only difference in cooling with the tubing facing the top of the board.. the VRM fan? If that's the case, then it should generally be fine and not negatively affected at all in terms of the block!? Anyone tried this?

Predictions for Battlemage?
>>101110383cancelled for AI partnership with Nvidia
>>101110040That's actually a great value . I'd feel better if they had X670E boards, but for the price it can't be beat and it even has a pretty solid board for a B650 and good Gskill DDR5 6000mhz RAM. https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006709/amd-ryzen-7-7800x3d,-asus-b650-e-tuf-gaming,-gskill-flare-x5-series-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundleOnly downside is you need a a Microcenter nearby as I don't think they ship this stuff, its in store. However, if you've got one, this is pretty solid. They've even got a version of the bundle that takes the above and adds a 7900XT GPU, but it will be above his budget but still a good deal.
>>101110311IIRC that cooler, as with most AIOs, comes with paste pre-applied. If you want to use your MLG PRO paste then a cross with 4 dots, like a pigpen cipher, is the go-to for AMD chips. Other applications will work fine though so long as you bias it towards the CCDs. Personally I just manually spread everything for consistency.

>>101110383Will probably be like when the 5700xt/rdna1 launched, so probably something thats midrange and inefficient with plenty of driver issues. It'll be a good stepping stone for whatever comes after battlemage if they build upon/improve that architecture.
>>101110851I ran these settings with a 3600+1660Ti and hit a consistent 1440p60 (excluding shader compilation ofc but that seems to be fixed). Try that and, if it doesn't work, it probably is your CPU. Possibly memory too as mine was 3200. The good news is that you can drop in a 5*00X3D and be G2G.
>>101110784I was thinking it would as well, as I think the previous LF2 did, but apparently it does not - I just looked at the block currently and the copper on the cold plate is bare - it does come with a free included tube of MX-6 though which is nice (I, not knowing this and figuring I may need paste cleaning, grabbed one of those kits with some MX-6 + a pack of Arctic's paste removal and cleaning wipes, in addition to the Kryonaut Extreme I picked up earlier) >Cross w/4 dots Really? I vaguely remember hearing of it but I haven't built anything for AMD since their Ryzen lineup. If like a pigpen cypher, then the cross is more like an X then right, as opposed to the cardinal direction / crucifixion style? Are the dots intended to be close to the lines as in the cypher or should they be in the middle of the widest area of each for coverage? >bias it for CCDsSo basically if I was to use any other application I'd need to move say, the dot or horizontal line slightly lower than the center of the CPU? >manual spreadI've always been wary of that in that I worry that by making sure the IHS is properly covered, I'd put too thick a layer down? Is it easy with modern pastes to spread a proper layer?

>>101110986>then the cross is more like an X then...>should they be in the middle...Yes correct to both.>I'd need to move say, the dot or horizontal line slightly lower than the center of the CPU? Pretty much yeah. You'd also need more, relative to old Intel, because the IHS is larger.Basically what you're doing is making sure there's sufficient paste above the hot spot i.e. the CCD(s). The other way to do that would be to make sure there's paste over the entire IHS (cross/manual technique).>I'd put too thick a layer down?As far as temps go there's not really a problem with using "too much" paste. Any excess just gets squeezed out. Messy and annoying but not damaging so long as it's non-conductive.Frankly there's far too much discourse around paste application. It's bikeshedding - using *enough* is the #1 factor while the pattern might be good for a 0.5C swing under lab conditions. You can test it yourself if you'd like. Super easy to repaste with an AIO. I made the mistake of using (far) too little on my first AM4 chip. Switching to a cross dropped my temps 5C but a manual spread made no difference.
>>101111010Yes, they are but the good news is that the amount of difference between them has shrunk in the past decade or so . Its not like the days when Arctic Silver 5 was the best you could get and it had like a 200 hour cure time to get temperatures to the lowest point etc. Anyway pastes tend to fall into several categories >ultra high end, conductive, other issues - Liquid Metal These are not standard pastes but there are some.Coolaboratory Liquid Metal Pro, Indigo Xtreme, and a few others including the probably best option at current, Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme. It has better thermal principles but the fact its electrically conductive, erodes anything that is nickel plated (ie you want a pure copper coldplate that is going to touch not a coated one) etc.. means more care must be taken. Most people don't need this sort of thing. >Standard type pastes, high end optionsThe top end here are stuff like the newest Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme, Arctic MX-6, and a few others. Older pastes like Gelid Extreme, Kingpin/KPX, and Prolimatech PK3 are still good too. MX-6 is perhaps the most inexpensive of the high end pastes these days and improves on the already nice MX-4.>Cooling padsMost of the time pads suck - people think of default ones that used to come with old Intel heatsinks. Most pads are used in places that its hard or unsafe to use paste, but today there are some that are capable of equivalent or near equivalent cooling, such as the Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet (a graphene pad with paste-equivalent cooling potential You buy these in the intended size for your usage - it lists which CPU or GPUs each is made for. Note, these are not as bad as liquid metal as they don't drip but they ARE electrically conductive, so be smart), MinusPad Extreme (silicone based, not meant for CPU/GPU but VRM etc; pick thickness, cut to size, not conductive) or Arctic TP-3 (similar to MPExtreme, cheaper)

If you've got a decent budget for the upgrade put some of it towards a 1440p/144 display at minimum.
>>101111300The most impactful thing for a board is not power throttling the CPU. The HDV doesn't do that it just has a lower default TjMax. Which might actually be desirable but is easy to change if not.The actual VRM temps are nice to look at but they're not dynamic like a CPU - lower than the throttle point doesn't "get" you anything. Plus you're probably not going to run a 7950X so the difference will be much diminished. The HDV is basically the "sensible minimum" for AM5 where it can run any CPU available and has broad enough feature set for most users. If you need more, eg. PCIe5 for a video workstation, then spend more but otherwise save your money. Also it's worth noting that the HDV is so popular that it frequently sells out or gets gouged. The PRO RS is a good alternative if that happens when you're buying.

>>101104520What's the strategy if I'm willing to wait 6 months (not one more) for a new PC with Intel+Nvidia?
>>101116742Watch me not buy them then, retard. If you agree that their prices are artificially inflated and buy them anyway (while doing mental gymnastics to justify it) then you're buckbroken. I will be the start of the wave of people not buying Nvidia. I will not eat the bugs. I will not live in the fucking pod.
>>101116659I'll probably buy a 6X00 or something in the meantime while waiting. I'm also willing to wait for an entirely new GPU manufacturer if the MCM GPU doesn't deliver before buying Jewvidia or Poointel.
>>1011167565090 should be released in the next 6 months, 5080 will probably be released in 6 months. no chance for lower end>>101116787then dont buy, lmao, its your money. but i have proposal anon, sell me your entire rig for $20....wait, you don't want to? stop being fucking kike and artificially inflate prices
>>101116787>I will be the start of the wave of people not buying Nvidialol no you won't. You'll keep bitching and pay up anyway.
>>101116710alrite new rig it is thenwanted to get a different case anyway this will make it easier
>>101116728Gamers value GeForce chips more than you give credit for, NVIDIA has no reason to leave money on the table. We had people here claiming an $800 4070 Ti 12GB being the best price/performance card last year.NVIDIA has every right to take these people’s money, just like how AMD convinced people to pay over $1000 for the 7900XTX.Intel’s Alchemist is too shit to profit off of.
>>101116821It's not for sale, goylem, just like my self-respect. Lol, did you really think you were being smart?>>101116822Okay, buck.
>>101116787Oh no guys, NVIDIA’s not going to get this man child’s $300.Even your local grocery store doesn’t give a shit about losing your business.
>>101116857fucking kike hoarding all these components. you don't want to sell? i dont give a shit you are still a kike
>>101116874The price is never low enough for these animals. That’s why Radeon decided not to start a price war.
>>101116841>NVIDIA has no reasonThen be the reason. Or don't. Just don't try to justify how you're not actually a slave.>>101116863Cope>>101116874I don't remember you asking for my consent to post on this imageboard - when are you going to pay me back, goy?
>>101116957You’re the one coping because you’ve been priced out of the GeForce cards worth buying. All three companies will always charge aa much as they can. It’s a for-profit business.
>>101116979Assumptions. I will continue to play on my 1060 6GB. I have been waiting for next-gen GPUs for 444 days and I will continue to wait.
>>101117032AKA priced out and coping with his 1060 in 2024.There’s plenty of discounted cards that deliver well over 2x performance of your existing crap.
>consoles struggle to render at 60fps at anything over 1080p>4k is literally cinema fps modeso a 1080p120hz is all you need for consoles is it?
>>101117053If none of the next-gen GPU selections meet my standards, I will probably upgrade to a 6X00. In the meantime, I can look myself in the mirror and I am enjoying myself. Can you say the same?
>>101116957>I don't remember you asking for my consent to post on this imageboardAnother day, another commie radeontard completely lacks an understanding of concept of ownership
>>101117138None of the card manufacturers give a shit about the standards of someone who’s still holding onto a 1060 6GB.Quit trying to frame a gaming GPU’s pricing as a societal issue, it’s a nonessential, arguably a luxury product. You look like a clown.
>7500f (170 USD) for 50 bucks less than a 7600 (220 USD) in my countryThe 7500f would be the straight up smarter buy in this scenario no?
>>101117182He’s not even a Radeon tard, he’s a poorfag 1060 owner hoping NVIDIA sells cheaper cards because he refuses to buy an RX 6800 or a 7900 GRE.
>>101117182All of the Earth's oxygen is my oxygen, commie.>>101117223>societal issueLmao, I'm talking about being able to look yourself in the mirror and enjoying yourself. Can you, with a straight face, while looking yourself in the mirror, say, "I buy Nvidia and I am free and happy". I don't give a fuck about society; I give a fuck about YOU!
>>101117326I don’t make a big deal out of a video card purchase like you treat it as the decision of your decade.I buy one that will last me at least four to five years and move on.NVIDIA’s entitled to their premium because no one else offers a like for like alternative.Just look at you, you’d rather hold onto a 1060 instead of buying a 6800 or a GRE that’s about 3x to 4x better. You’re part of the problem because NVIDIA gets your money anyway.
>>101117326... anon, do you really deriver your sense of worth based on whenever you bough product of some company or not?
>>101117236yep
>>101117433He’s one of thousands of waitfags that’ll eventually buy GeForce cards.Best part is GeForce revenues continue to grow without any sales from these guys. They’re totally showing NVIDIA.
>>101117408Uh huh. If that's what you're happy with. And I'm happy never buying Jewvidia or Poointel. You're the one making a big deal out of having to justify your purchase, like you have "no choice".>>101117433No, goy, I derive it from always having a choice.
>>101117547>And I'm happy never buying Jewvidia or Poointel.>t. 1060 owner, didn’t buy discounted 6800 or the GRECoping poorfag confirmed
>>101117538>Why are you making such a big deal out of nothing?!>*Tries to tell everyone who'll listen Nvidia will end up the winner anyways*You need a big white screen for that projector, buddy?
Is this some 4d nvidia marketing or are you lot just this retarded?
>>101117081nvm I checked it again even frame rate modes are rendeded higher than 1080p
Call me crazy but I believe the RTX 4090 is today's 1080 Ti
>>101117594>>101117625At least fund the competitor’s R&D if you kids are going to bitch and moan about the status quo.Holding onto a GTX 1060 in mid 2024 says it all.
>>101117652I'm going to wait for next-gen to release and if it's not good enough, I'll probably buy a 6X00 in the meantime. This is the third time I've said this.
>>101117742And you’re part of the reason why NVIDIA can charge a premium for their GeForce cards. You’re unwilling to buy an RX6800 (3x raster) or the 7900GRE (4x) you’ve decided your cash + 1060 is worth more.Stop acting like you’re not part of the problem.
>>101117824Need a hand with that goalpost? If I buy a 6800 now, will that improve AMD's "R&D" of their next-gen GPUs? If I buy it now instead of after they release their next-gen GPUs, what does that change? Why do you keep conflating>I won't buy an 6800 right nowwith>My cash+1060 is worth more than a 6800What the fuck are you talking about?
>>101117642nah, the fps appetite is ever-growing. it's no longer about playable framerate of 1080p with 30/60fps. it will grow to 4k@1000fps faster than gpu manufactures will be able to deliver
>>101117889What the fuck are you waiting for? RDNA2 production to halt? RX6800 is produced in limited quantities as they’re meant to sell defective Navi21s.Yields aren’t an issue at this point for 7nm chip production. You’ve already decided the Radeon cards on the market isn’t worth paying, that’s why you’re still waitfagging with the GTX 1060.
>>101116750Up top
>decide to finally get angled cable (CABLE, NOT ADAPTER. READ RETARD) for my 4090 because my case is on the smaller side>voltages are much higher>cable itself is cooler>no longer have to bend cableinteresting
>>101117955for referencei have a "benchmark" that i've created to test the consistency of my temps/voltagesin this same area, i would drop down to 11.7v with the corsair premium sleeved cable. temps would reach 45c on the cable (t_sensor1)
>>101117937For the next-gen GPUs to release. Because if they satisfy me, then I'll buy it, which would make buying a 6800 overwhelmingly redundant. Why did you think I'm waiting for next-gen GPUs to release? Why do you keep conveniently missing this statement even though I've repeated it several times? Do you need a therapist?
>>101117996oops wrong image
>>101104520>Arctic P12/P14 Maxwhy max over regular? doesnt the AIOs ship with the regular ones as well.
>>101117999Your inaction proves the current batch of Radeon cards aren’t worth buying, hence why NVIDIA can charge a premium on GeForce cards.Look how you won’t even consider RDNA3 cards. You are part of the problem, don’t act like you’re not.
>>101118045Because the Max attempted to minimize their famous grinding/humming noise. It’s present in all Arctic fans, it’s a material issue that can’t be addressed without raising the MSRP.
>>101118045max is the new design
>>101113037yet you didnt paint your asus card the same colors, shame
>>101117999anon... how poor are you? because for most people it's simple matter of if you are happy with your current cardyes) no need to upgradeno) decide on what to buy based on needs and bang per buckbrooding so much over gpus is retarded
Do I "need" a contact frame for Intel?
>>101118048So according to you, am I supposed to buy a 6800 now and then buy a 8800 ~half a year later?
>>101118195I'm not the one brooding. I'm happy with my choice right now. You should ask the person I'm responding to take your advice.
>>101118209the bending shit is really only a problem if you use an AIO and even then nah, don't bother worrying unless your temps are bad and you've made sure there are no other issues.
>>101118242so why are "waiting"? why is purchase of gpu on your mind at all?
>anon says they won't buy nvidia>the shills crawl out of the woodwork and go full panic mode On a sunday? Gotta be doing it for free
>>101118276it is human nature towant to correct someone's error. buying an amd card at this point is like throwing away your money.
>>101118217Notice how you’re not even considering RDNA3 cards? If Radeon’s not selling compelling products at reasonable prices, NVIDIA’s going to push the pricing limits as they’ve found out with the $1200 4080.
>>101118276More like dumb ass retard says he’s waiting for the next MCM GPU without having a clue about end user benefits like the bitch he is.
>>101112572I was thinking of going with 5800X3DRTX4060along with the RAM upgrade.New monitors are currently outside my budget.Did I do good or will there be a bottleneck somewhere?
>>101118242You’re so happy you can’t afford good GeForce cards anymore.
>>101118327i would go with amd gpu in this price bracket. 8gb bad. unless you really need one of nvidia features
>>101118385>>101118385>>101118385
why are you amd niggas such cultists anyway? i'm using a 12700k and will be switching to amd cpus next gen unless arrow lake is good (and it doesn't look like it will be).buying an amd card is actually just very stupid right now
>>101118264I'm happy with waiting because buying a current-gen GPU right now would not make me happy. Buying a 6800 would make me happy, but my happiness from doing so would diminish if I end up buying an 8800 or whatever.>>101118290Yea, and? I hate Jewvidia and Poointel, that doesn't mean I love AMD.Jewvidia cannot be in control of the GPU market while AMD is at the same time responsible for how Jewvidia prices their products. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. To clarify, you have no fucking idea what Nvidia would do if AMD did price their products "reasonably". There's even room to doubt Nvidia would actually lower their prices in response to whatever AMD did.
>>101118209Unless you are going for an i7/i9 on air, no you don't "need" it.Even then, they are only $8 and knock a few degrees off your system:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYU1OskbY-Qhttps://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-LGA1700-BCF-V2-Corrective-LGA1700/dp/B0CS8WQYZW
>>101118410so... purchase of gpu is what makes you happy? not playing games or using this gpu for anything useful? purchasing things makes you happy?
>>101118364>good>GeForce cardsSuch as?
>>101118410You’re not buying an RX 8800 any time soon, you’re treating a discounted 6800 as if it’s a life changing financial decision.
>>101118454Don’t bitch about NVIDIA’s pricing if you don’t value their products to begin with.NVIDIA already got your $300 many years ago, stop acting like they should tool their entire chip lineup to win your next $300.
>>101118447What helps me in being happy to wait is that I enjoy what I can do with my 1060 6gb right now. The two are not mutually exclusive. Go be a jew somewhere else.>>101118465>treats buying a GPU like it's picking up toilet paper>>101118501Don't buy a 4090 and pretend you're not being buck broken.
>>101118561NVIDIA adjusts pricing by market demand, the 4080 Super was practically a discount and they gave more VRAM to the 4070 Ti Super.NVIDIA has no reason to discount the 4090 when people are still willing to pay a higher premium than the $1600 MSRP.
>>101118639>NVIDIA adjusts pricing by market demandAnd what if this was bullshit?
>>101118419I'm convinced
>>101118674don't panic when your memory stops working after you install this (incorrectly)
>>101118327>5800X3DGood>RTX40604060 sucks. Either spend double and get 4070 super or 150 dollars more and get RX 7700 XT.>along with the RAM upgrade. Not strictly necessary, but getting 2x16 3200 cl 16 ram would help you yes. You can buy them for around 60 dollars I think?>Did I do good or will there be a bottleneck somewhere?Nah you would be good.
>>101118666Just because you think it’s bullshit, doesn’t mean the overall market thinks so.You should also use a bit of braincells to realize the 4090 is a compelling product to a wider user base than just gamers.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willingness_to_pay
>>101118697Oh, I forgot that 7700 XT prices were down, you would only need to spend 100 bucks more for it. It's Ayyyyyymd but it's still better value than 4060.
>>101118725What would get you to consider that it was bullshit? What makes you think its true in the first place? Something like this?>Nvidia's pricing must be based on market demand because if it wasn't, they wouldn't price it like they do!
>>101118725YeahAI bros, VFX artists, homelab aficionados, data scientists etc. plenty of people buy 4090 for 2000+ and probably wouldn't mind spending 3000+ on 5090.Gaymers still can't accept the fact that they are not the audience for high end GPU computing anymore.
>>101118749The 4090 has no issues selling at above $1600.The cheapest 4090 in the US, excluding FE restocks, is a $1700 PNY Verto.Poorly priced products that aren’t worth buying gets discontinued, like the $1200 4080 and the $800 4070 Ti 12GB.There’s a lot more people willing to buy the very best GeForce cards compared to the time you bought that cute 1060.
>>101118831I'll make it an issue then, thanks.
>>101118697>>101118730Thanks for the feedback.
>>101119024Lowest price is still $1700, you’re a literal non-factor in their pricing strategy.
