>Realtek Audio Console
What is this shit and why do I need to install it (and how) to get surround sound speakers working? Can't I just use some other software instead? Where the hell is the audio driver? Why can't I just look up RealtekĀ® ALC892 Codec and find the drivers for it immediately from RealTek directly instead of various OEMs?
>>
>>101149194
Audio Console is a control panel. It's not the actual driver. I think you can fetch the drivers from Windows Update Catalog website.
>>
>>101149194
Realtek is too lazy too provide drivers themselves, I guess? Another anon mentioned they produce as many chipsets as there are days in a year. Yet Lenovo and especially Dell provide drivers on their websites for nearly all their products, including most, if not all, legacy products, which is a lot more files in total, and each with descriptions and stuff.
>>
>>101149950
it's more that MS has been improving and implementing more and more in software since that's easily changed vs fixed hardware
realtek doesn't do anything except act as a DAC on modern windows now

I primarily want explorer with tabs
I used to use Qttabbar to add tabs to win10's explorer, but it's quite outdated now and was a pain to reinstall whenever I reinstalled windows
XY (and presumably other explorers) also come with more features too, like more customization and a better file search engine.

Ive been one of those guys who used windows7 until the very last day of support and then upgraded to windows10. Now im getting a new pc and im debating on whether i should use w10 again or just get a pre installed w11.

Windows PC won't see any valid boot option since a recent power outage. GNU/Linux liveCD as well as uefi and boot menu all show the SSD, I can mount it and see the files. I suspect the boot sector is corrupt. I already ran ntfsfix -b -d on the Windows OS partition from systemrescuecd but it still won't boot still. Think it needs chkdsk or something more Windows-y.
I don't remember which version of Windows 10 is on here. Does it matter for doing a repair? Do repairs ever work? Is there something on the filesystem I can look at from GNU/Linux that will tell me the Windows edition installed?

Is there an easy way to change change what is on which monitor? I want to be able to hit a shortcut and it will go
Monitor 1 screen -> Monitor 2
Monitor 2 screen -> Monitor 3
Monitor 3 screen -> Monitor 1
and so on and just keeps cycling through them.
>>
>>101155413
You'll need to make an AutoHotKey script to set that up.
>>
>>101155391
Yes, just set BIOS/UEFI to boot first from USB. Common modern convenience since at least 2nd gen Core i3/i5/i7. However, I've only tested this with Windows on a 2.5" SSD in USB enclosure.
Great if you have another OS that you occasionally use and don't/can't place it inside your machine.

I asked this awhile ago but never got an answer. I can't seem to figure out what or why windows 10 made this extra 1MP primary partition and my partitions are different than what the guide shows.

https://rentry.org/windowsinstallguide

I did do a complete system recovery after I first installed 10 because I thought something unrelated went wrong so I was wondering if something was left over when I did that. Is it safe to delete it? There's no other options when I right click on it.
>>
>>101156329
That guide brings up so much more trouble then it's worth IMO. I've always just let the setup do what it wants with a diskpart clean'd unallocated disk and it's worked properly every time.
If you want to split your C:\ off into a D:\ or E:\ etc. you should always just shrink the C:\ and make a new partition with the new space.
>>
>>101156358
Yeah I didn't really think to use diskpart, I might try that. And yeah I was planning on splitting my partition at some point. Might as well do it after.
>>
>>101156430
I pretty much always use diskpart to clean any disk I'm about to install Windows to these days. No errors about loose partitions or MBR/GPT shit, it just werks.
>>
>>101156430
>I was planning on splitting my partition at some point.
always do this post install unless you want to fuck yourself by putting an immovable the recovery partition right in the middle of your drive that's only movable with 3rd party tools
>>
>>101156472
Well I did a diskpart clean and found no errors and still have this weird primary partition, unless I entered my commands wrong. Is there a way to see what this is?

I have no idea what it actually does.
>>
>>101171194
It actually feeling like it does something seems to be on a person to person basis. For some turning on HAGS gives them more FPS and such while for others it doesn't feel like it does anything.
Guess you could experiment with it via turning on a game, closing it and turning on HAGS and restarting, then turning on the game again to see if you feel anything different.
The whole point of HAGS is Windows managing GPU VRAM itself instead of the drivers doing it.

From looking it up it seems that your system image or files/boot sector have probably corrupted.
Best I can think of is loading up a Windows PE environment like HirenBootCD and running dism to restore the system image and running sfc on the drive, plus running bootrec /fixboot against the drive as well. You'll need different flags to point it to the offline drive.

It works with some games but this also depends on your other components.
It's somewhat funny that Microsoft has never actually announced anything specific about this setting.
You will also need HAGS on if you want to use framegen.
For example, I had frame pacing issues in
Darktide but as soon as I tested HAGS it stabilized its performance.
It might hurt some other games but this depends.

I've checked the install guide but it also doesn't mention the differences.
>>
>>101174493
The only differences between LTSC and IoT LTSC are their licenses and lifecycles. They're binary compatible otherwise, so using IoT just makes sense.

Hello /fwt/ it's that time again.
My previous windows installation that I did on my own was on an older motherboard AM3/DDR3.
Now I'm going to install windows again on a AM4/DDR4 one, more specifically a Asus PRIME A520M-A II AM4 mATX DDR4.
Would you say my previous USB installer (A very standard one that I used to install windows on the AM3) will work properly for this new motherboard? Should I perhaps start again from scratch with redownloading the ISO and using Rufus again?
>>
>>101174891
Your Windows installer USB will work fine. Just look up what the boot select key is on your new mobo.
>>
>>101174909
Thank you anon, as a matter of fact however it might not have been exactly a text book install.
When I first installed windows with /fwt/ help some anon uploaded a .docx with a tutorial on how to do it in it that I considered much better than the Rentry on the OP.
Shout outs to that anon, I still have that doc with me and would like to upload it again but anonfiles shutdown as far as I know, do you have any alternatives to it that I might use?
>>
>>101175032
If you wanna upload a file you can just use catbox.
Also if you'd like, you could just make a new bootable USB using the latest 23H2 11 Business ISO or IoT LTSC 2021 or 2024.
>>
>>101175097
>catbox.
Tried but it's not working for some reason, internal server error.
In any case I will try to upload it again later.
About the USB, I'm pretty sure I used a 2022 version. I don't particularly want to use latest versions of anything, I just need my windows to work is all, I just hope there won't be any issues.
Also just to add: first time I installed windows through here I actually did run into an issue where making the bootable install with Rufus made one incompatible with my motherboard, there were no instructions on selecting this out but I figured it out on my own, just had to change a small config option on Rufus. I can't remember what it was by now but it's one of the things I'm most concerned about.

not him but there's a few small differences, like IoT has lower requirements (ram/storage), no TPM/UEFI requirement, dx11/12 optional, etc, 10 years of support instead of 5 for regular ltsc, hwid activation supported, bitlocker/copilot off by default, more customisation options, etc
basically, if you're pirating it, there's no reason you wouldn't want iot ltsc instead, it's just a less restricted ltsc

Is there a known fix for ffmpeg 2-pass errors on Windows? The command
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -b:v 2M -pass 1 -an -f null NUL && ^
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -b:v 2M -pass 2 -c:a libopus output.webm

as suggested by https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/VP9 doesn't give consistent errors. Initially, it complained about not being able to open ffmpeg2pass-0.log if I remember correctly. Online suggestions involving -passlogfile just didn't do anything. Eventually, the error disappeared and got replaced by claims of not being able to initialize the encoder.

Friendly friends: I installed Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021 on a laptop which came bundled with Windows 11 Home. I've noticed I can no longer use the touchpad, connect to the internet via WiFi nor use Bluetooth. Settings for the touchpad and WiFi connections don't appear in the Windows 10 Settings hub. I've tried installing both the Synaptics and the Intel WiFi (23.60.1) drivers but the former resulted in the "Synaptics device not found!" error, and the latter, while installing successfully, didn't bring back the WiFi settings or available connections, even after a system reboot. The Bluetooth software appears to be installed on the device, but I doesn't detect any of my Bluetooth devices (mouse, speaker, etc.). Also, there's a bunch of unknown devices listed on the Device Manager that I can't install or update. When I first booted into the OS, the laptop was named "DESKTOP-(numbers)". Has Windows 10 wrongly identified my laptop as a desktop, thus rendering some of its components unusable?

Is there any way to permanently disable Windows Defender on Win 10 IoT? It keeps getting turned back on for some reason despite me disabling it many times, and when it's on it tries to claim the MS Office cracker I have is a "virus" (it isn't) and deletes it without asking. I know I can keep an encrypted copy of the cracker so that when it gets nuked and I need it again I can just turn off Windows Defender, then recover the cracker, but it's kind of a pain in the dick.

>>
>>101184033
One of the other reasons why MAS is so revered in the MS product activating world is that it doesn't trigger Defender even if it's on. It'd be much easier for you to just activate whatever Office suite you have installed using its Ohook module instead.
>>
>>101184066
it does if you download the scrip instead of using the powershell method
>>
>>101183688
No, haven't you seen those dialogue boxes about "We are preparing your computer"? They are the administrators.
Who are they, We don't know.
>>
>>101184123
That's why the PS launching method is recommended instead. Running the script like that is like running KMS_VL_ALL, so you gotta disable Defender before running it.
>>
>>101184033
This is just redundant because antivirus software including ms defender will often flag almost any patcher as "malicious". It has nothing to do with anything really.
I have Downloads directory in which defender is allowed to scan but everything else on my work/storage disks are excluded. It's also enabled fully on the system partition though.
Don't worry about this.

I'm not knowledgeable about how Office's copy protection or whatever it is works. The "cracker" I'm referring to is called KMS_VL_ALL_AIO.cmd, I'm pretty sure I found it in this thread's OP a couple years ago so maybe there's a better way to activate Office now.
>>
>>101184294
KMS_VL_ALL was how you activated Office for a real long time, but MAS's Ohook module is now the go-to way to activate Office post 2013.

With every fresh install, you need drivers otherwise shit won't work. Trying to manually find each and every drivers on prebuilt PC's and laptops can be a crapshoot, as their parts are by some literal who company that have zero support if something goes wrong. Usually you can just update your drivers or OS as Windows is surprisingly smart enough to look for the right drivers but since you also mention you have no internet. Another option is to use your smartphone as a mobile hotspot. Take out your smartphone and turn on mobile hotspot, in the hotspot settings/options look for a setting relating to usb or something. It depends on your phone so just look that up. Then if you have any working usb port, just plug your phone into it and you should have internet.

Alternatively if you don't want to update windows as Windows 10 will start to automatically updating if you left update on, you can use Snappy Driver. This will look for you correct drivers and install them and remove the shitty one.

https://www.glenn.delahoy.com/snappy-driver-installer-origin/

Be sure to grab the driver packs too, the file size is a few gigs big so make sure you have space.

>do you think bestbuy would help me with this shit?
No, Best Buy will not help you pirate Windows, nor install LTSC IoT Enterprise (the superior windows version)
>>
>>101183783
Also, you cannot brick your computer by reinstalling an operating system. It's impossible. You aren't writing to firmware. If you somehow fucked it up and ended up with an unbootable computer and didn't know what to do, it's still not bricked, anyone who knows what they are doing can still just install windows or whatever on it. You cannot brick a computer unless you are flashing the BIOS, they are designed to work this way.

disable search indexing (use voidtools' everything instead)
disable ntfs access time updating (causes a write on every read, most things don't care about access times)
make a small partition at the start of the disc for windows (hdd's are fastest at the start, so you don't want frequently-accessed data nearer the end)
consider making a ramdisc for %temp% (imdisk tools is what i use for this)

(fucking shit I can't post right)
Windows 7 doesn't indeed come with usb 3.0 support out the box and you have to add those in yourself after making a booable Window 7 usb or use a USB 2.0 slot if your PC still has one. I know some PC's/Motherboards still come with a USB 2.0 slot at the back. Another issue you need to know is Windows 7 doesn't support UEFI BIOS and won't boot into it so you need to switch to the classic BIOS in your BIOS settings, sometimes called Legacy BIOS, CSM, or even just classic BIOS. Every Motherboard company wants to give it a different name but its basally old school BIOS(no GUI). There is a way to get it to run in UEFI but there's a lot of extra steps that's not really needed if your mother board can run classic BIOS.

But yeah installing Windows 7 takes a lot of extra pre steps and isn't streamline like modern Windows and Linux. You also need to look up each part on your PC and see if it still supported for 7 as Micropenis paid hardware companies to stop supporting 7. There are work arounds to get newer parts to run on 7 but again, you have to look that up.

I'd go to mydigiallife's forms as they have everything you need and are way better than asking here.
https://forums.mydigitallife.net/forums/windows-7.16/

And yeah you need an account just to see links and post, it sucks.

First thing I'd do is follow their method on making a remake ISO that comes with everything you need on the USB(3.0 drivers, simplix pack, other drivers, etc.)
https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/mdl-win-7-tool-for-simplix-updatepack-aio-iso-with-install-wim-esd-creation.79421/

And if you have any questions, its probably best to ask there as /g/ is a "must always updoot!!" anti-7 board now.
>>
>>101185931
Also once you got 7 running and hardware working, you can install components that back port Windows 10/11 only components and be able to run non Windows 7 supported software so you can continue getting updates for certain programs like browsers and such that stop supporting 7.

You can't. The code is closed and as such it can't be audited, so they can do any shady shit they want behind your back.
Why do you think open-source software is getting so popular? Lot's of people are jumping to Linux for that reason alone.
I only use Windows as a gaming console nowadays, and I plan to get rid of it, as 99% of all games work on Linux anyway.

Or just use a network cable to connect to the internet and let Windows Update find the drivers.

thank you very much family. Sadly this PC only comes with USB 3.0 ports so I'm gonna have to do the long road. I think Rufus takes care of launching the win7 install on UEFI Compatibility mode while craeting the installer because my USB stick worked on both UEFI and MBR modes (failing to recognize my peripherals on both).
Thanks again

WPD is pretty old school. I used it for a while years ago and it felt like it was working.
I'd just use ShutUp10 these days though. Maybe use Simplewall's WindowsSpyBlocker lists as well for extra peace of mind if you need it.

How do I stop windows 11 from asking me to register an account? I've already made a local account, but when I restart/turn on my pc it prompts me to make an account. There is an option to delay it for X days, but eventually that will go away and I'll be locked out of my pc unless I make an account.
Does anyone know how to completely disable that constant asking for account registration?
>>
>>101188203
Go to your notification settings and uncheck the option that says to notify you on how to get the most out of Windows. They should disappear then.
>>
>>101183961
Factory reset isn't the same as a clean install. With a clean install you'll download a new iso from Microsoft. While resetting it will just use the Windows install that's already on the pc. So if that install is fucked it will stay that way after the reset. You could try an in-place-upgrade maybe? Download the iso from Microsoft's site, double click to mount, run setup.exe.

its not there I checked every single menu and it's completely unrelated to the issue I'm having
>>
>>101188370
It should be in System - Notifications - Additional Settings, but as you say you can't see any option with "get the most out of Windows" in it they've probably changed the wording.
It could also be called "Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device" which you should uncheck. Also uncheck the "get tips when using Windows" box as well while you're there.
>>
>>101188440
I found it and I appreciate it but that doesn't help with the lock screen issue itself.

No it isn't. You can't upgrade to LTSC from a standard edition.
Also don't bother using the IoT Enterprise variant, just stick with Enterprise.

Certain uninstallers also remove registry/appdata detritus as well. So called registry cleaners are scams and break shit.

Thunderbird is really the only one outside of the Outlook UWP when it comes to Windows email clients.
Also if you're on Firefox you could just log in to all of your emails and just pin the tabs so they're there but just on the left side not taking up too much space.

Download the latest portable version of Rufus and the IoT LTSC 2021 ISO from massgrave (in the OP). You can then plug in this old USB and overwrite it with the ISO with Rufus.

I know, but there are some that don't.
>So called registry cleaners are scams and break shit.
Learned this from experience. So we just let them sit in our disks? I know these remnant files are like kilobytes or small megabytes in length, but they could serve as a fossil record for the certain applications you had installed in your system.

No, you cannot do this without losing data and even if you could you probably wouldn't want to since Windows would definitely act weird.

Easiest way I found to make the switch is to take your current OS and turn it into a Hyper-V virtual machine and put it on external drive. Wipe your internal drive and install W11 IOT LTSC, install drivers, import the Hyper-V virtual machine inside the new OS and run it. now you have your old install and new install side by side just go through and drag/drop files, install all the apps, etc. Makes it a lot easier for me personally.
