/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Handy for remote low level stuff such as bios and firmware upgrades. Otherwise you can just connect your machine to a monitor every once in a while if you need to see what you're doing. Supermicros require a java app to access IPMI for *9 series boards and less. I think it wasn't until *10 series boards that they switched to HTML5.

Idk if this is the right place to ask but, does anyone know what privacymeasures backblaze has? I have sensitive business data on my server that needs to be inaccessible to outsiders legally.

This really depends, if you just want to tick boxes for audit then backblaze can help you do that with their various compliance

and support for encryption at rest (you need to turn this on)
If you really want to protect the data (and assuming it's backups?) then you want to encrypt it before it leaves your network using something like restic

That anon here, it was quite a while ago, I set up the full stack once but resorted to just use deemix because I had some problems with lidarr that I can't honestly recall, it was something with the artists' naming. Sorry I can't give you more insight anon. I'll get back to it eventually though.

Reposting this from another thread
The RK3588 now has all the needed drivers and shit merged into the kernal (video drivers soon™ like probably the next kernal release or the following one at the latest)
You can buy a NanoPi R6S with a case and power supply for $140, it has 2 2.5ghz Ethernet ports + a 1ghz ethernet port, it runs on the rockchip 3588 octa core arm processor with 8gb of ram base spec. It even has a three or five TOPs NPU on the soc.
There is an official openwrt build available.
https://www.friendlyelec.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=69&product_id=289
Grab one of these bad boys, a $60 chink 2.5G switch, the WAP of your choice and you are sitting pretty for about $300-$400 all on
Might make a nice little firewall for those who insist they need more for their router and switches and shit.
>>
>The RK3588 now has all the needed drivers and shit merged into the kernal (video drivers soon™
LMAO fellow retard , you're about to learn how shit the arm ecosystem is . I own a RK3588 device that I want to install a proper OS onto but I've been waiting over a year for drivers and I don't expect them to happen anytime soon since the chinks don't give a fuck about upstreaming their licence invested drivers with probably with stollen/illegal code to the kernel

However, there's still lots of issues, i wouldn't run anything serious on it.

You need to install 12 (unbalanced configuration) or 16 (balanced configuration) DIMMs for 2 DPC. 14 DIMMs is not divisible by 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Each processor has up to four memory channels, for two processors that's 8 DIMMs total.
>When mixing memory modules with different capacities, populate the sockets with memory modules with highest capacity first. For example, if you want to mix 4 GB and 8 GB memory modules, populate 8 GB memory modules in the sockets with white release tabs and 4 GB memory modules in the sockets with black release tabs.
>Populate all the sockets with white release tabs first, followed by the black release tabs, and then the green release tabs.
>In a dual-processor configuration, the memory configuration for each processor should be identical. For example, if you populate socket A1 for processor 1, then populate socket B1 for processor 2, and so on.
>Populate four memory modules per processor (one DIMM per channel) at a time to maximize performance.

i don't like doing that either, so I use cloudflare tunnel for exposing my home-hosted stuff
it's free and works great; basically like a ssh reverse-tunnel
>>
Today I learned Intel SFP/SFP+/SFP28 NICs are not vSAN certified, due to lack of RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) support. It's going to be Mellanox ConnectX-4 or later for me.
>>
>>101170376
can't you just use piVPN or some other wireguardbased tunnel?
>>
>>101170504
sure, you could use a paid VPN that provides a static IP and port-forwarding; the specific tunnel protocol doesn't really matter
but if you're gonna pay for a static IP, might as well get a server
>>
>>101170520
pivpn isn't paid it's a wireguard/openvpn script and requires less hassle than cloudflare
>>
>>101170530
pivpn is for setting up a VPN server on your home network. it requires exposing a port on your home WAN interface.
so, if you're not at home, you can connect to your home and it's like on your LAN. it doesn't obfuscate your home IP, quite the opposite, it allows you to use your home IP from anywhere.

the way cloudflared works is that your local device connects out to cloudflare, and cloudflare exposes ports on its infrastructure, so someone connecting to your service connects to a cloudflare IP. throughout the whole process, no ports are ever opened on your home WAN interface.
>>
>>101170550
oh I misunderstood, yes for exposure to third parties that option is indeed better

From the perspective of Dell PowerEdge server generations:
>Mellanox Connect-X4 is supported on 13G & 14G
>Intel E810 is supported on 14G, 15G & 16G
Sources:
https://www.dell.com/en-hk/shop/mellanox-connectx-4-lx-dual-port-25gbe-sfp28-network-adapter-customer-install/apd/406-bblf/wifi-and-networking

Thus, the answer is still a Mellanox ConnectX-4 for R730 owners, or either Mellanox or Intel NICs for R740 or later server owners (preference for Mellanox due to four letter vendor named after a large self-illuminated object in space and natural movement of air).
>>
>>101172487
I also omitted Intel NICs with 10 GbE copper from this list, but they also don't support RDMA / RoCEv2 or are not certified for vSAN. (Nevermind it's not relevant anyway, because the costs of expanding copper to 100 meters and higher power consumption for 10 GbE over copper is cost prohibitive versus fiber.)

How hard is setting up LUKS with ZFS, I need some cold storage and I'd prefer encryption just in case?

And why LUKS? Because I'd rather eat gastation sushi than use ZFS native encryption.
>>
>>101174221
I haven't used ZFS but it should be pretty easy just like any other filesystem. Whatever you would put your filesystem on you instead use cryptsetup, that leaves you with a new device-mapper device which you put your ZFS filesystem on
>>
>>101174221
should be easy, i'd just look into github for any possible issues, i remember this one specifically: https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/issues/15533
Native encryption has it's issues too, they're basically duplicating code from openssl for encryption, but didn't bother to port all the code, for example AES-NI extensions are not ported to ARM (you wouldn't want to run ZFS on ARM anyway, there are other much bigger issues with it).
Also it doesn't seem to get much development, ZFS is mainly used without encryption by enterprises i believe, and that's what drives the development.
I wish ZFS didn't try to reinvent encryption, mounting and sharing by itself.
>>
>>101174288
Yeah, shouldn't be that hard.

>>101174415
...or then it might be. Wish there was some "stabe" ZFS with only basic features, the current devs push all unecessary shit (VDEV expansion) and somehow manage to fuck up everything. Or even get a real devs who know their shit.

Do I really have to go with Solaris ZFS, rumor goes it actually has a working encryption.

>>101174221
I think the generality of it is:
>create LUKS encryption on the target device
>unlock the LUKS
>create the zpool using the new opened device
Most OS wikis should have a walkthrough, so go check for your own.

>>101174415
I don't know the origin story under bsd, but zfs wanted to put all tools together for what it does instead of rely on numerous separate commands. That's why it's also at odds with the way most linux things are expected to be arranged.
>ZFS is mainly used without encryption by enterprises
Kinda leads me to believe that's why ssds started getting onboard encryption instead of making the OS deal with it.

>>101174531
There are retards that INSIST on being able to grow their storage needs to a completely different redundancy level. The block copy bug from last year was also due to retards constantly needing to develop too.

My only encounter with it is via nvme-cli, which is obtuse to use for a layman. I'm pretty certain my u.2 disk is barfing pointless errors because I set the power mode flag incorrectly.

I wouldn't know how it even unlocks itself. Seemed kinda dumb to store the encryption engine on the disk because wouldn't it unlock itself automagically when powered on?

When I started my home server I was in your position but then it became troublesome to manage a lot of containers in a single machine. Further, a bug with a container brought the whole system down with the rest of the containers, it was a nightmare. Yes, I'm aware, they can be improved, but regardless the functionality wouldn't been optimal. Meanwhile splitting the work to a different VM ensures any critical processes running on VM 1 won't be affected

Hello cutiepies, is anyone running a server with older xeons with loads of storage? Why do some spec sheets list 1tb max for some of the intel chipsets that most xeon workstations come with?

Is this a real spec or just "iunno what the limit is so here's an arbitrarily high number for the current time period"

picrel is for intel C236 spec from dell's data sheets and i was thinking of pairing it with an E3-1270v5 because i have a lot of compatible hardware lying around for eventual fixes, but I'm gonna need more storage than what they claim it supports

May have something to do with Dell selling their OEM drives with Dell firmware from that time period, for the benefit of being able to update the firmware from Lifecycle Controller or iDRAC. I looked at Dell PowerEdge R230's Drivers & Downloads page, and couldn't find many HDDs > 2 TB in capacity. Many enterprise SAS HDDs were also smaller in capacity than consumer NAS drives.

What do you Anons suggest for a firewall software? I have a protectli vault that I just wanna put the software on and use that as the firewall, instead of putting it behind proxmox or something.
Only issue last time I tried doing this was, I was using opnsense, and I was not able to get my old router to become the AP on the second ethernet line. I know I suck at networking, but it got DHCP, but no Internet, which was a bummer.
I should do this again this weekend and get it over with, but I feel like opnsense might not be the ideal one? Since it didn't make it obvious to "give Internet" to the old router becoming the wifi AP.
I don't have my configuration on hand at the moment, but I'll try again.
But, I don't know if there are other firewall applications that may be better? What do you Anons suggest?
I do want to monitor traffic, block traffic to bad places, etc, and all that stuff as well. Willing to store logs and such to analyze for later, if let's say I accidentally click on something.
>>
>>101185214
This is a good reason buy a dedicated AP, and a dedicated firewall appliance (not a software firewall for production).
>>
>>101185449
Yeah I understand that, cause I was also looking at openwrt, but a lot of manual things to go over.
I just don't need a very strong AP for a big building, my place is pretty small to cover wifi for two people.
I'd LOVE to go for a PanOS, but I don't wanna pay licenses and will probably cost a lot. I think there are some appliances where you buy it once?
However, my big need is silence. I'm more into getting fanless computer to do the job, since I don't have a rack in the garage, or somewhere that the noise won't bother me

FortiGate generally costs the cost of the device + 15% of the device cost per year for FortiCare Essential (firmware updates, no other features, no business support). E.g. a FortiGate 60F is approximately ~$900 USD total cost for the device and a 5 year FortiCare Essential license for updates (total cost over 5 years: $180 USD/year or $15/month). FG-40F is ~$686 USD total with those two (go figure). Silent too. My servers cost more money than my firewalls.
I don't know about Palo Alto or Juniper SRX costs, both also require subscriptions.

Pro NAS for less than 10 users, don't care about noise
Synology DS224+ or DS723+, with 2x4Tb Synology HAT3300 (built-in firmware upgrade) or Toshiba N300 (cheapest 7k2 RPM), a 4GB Synology RAM stick for 2+4Gb, a Synology or <insert brand> NVME SSD to maybe increase speed ?

Use case :
Heavy use of Drive with a dedicated domain (not sure how to do it with QuickConnect or a DDNS)
Heavy use of VPN Server for RDP
Probably Hyper Backup or Active Backup but we'll mostly use the Drive as a backup
Probably Docker for ZeroTier if OpenVPN is not what we expect
Maybe VM (but I have an EliteDesk in the office for this currently)

Home NAS for 2 users, care a lot about noise (near our bedroom)
Synology ??? (I realistically need only 1 bay but I don't know the futur, 4Tb Synology HAT3300 (5k4 RPM so lower noise and built-in firmware upgrade), don't know if I need a RAM upgrade and NVME SSD.
Or I can try to buy an unused DS412+ from a customer but only 1GB of RAM (looks like I can upgrade it unofficially with some specific sticks)

Use case :
Android Photos backup with QuickConnect
NAS for movies with Kodi on AndroidTV
Docker for ZeroTier
Probably Download Station if I can manage to put the MullvadVPN or SOCKS proxy on it (my country care about piracy ...)
Probably Cloud Sync for 3-2-1 backup
Probably Audio Station if Spotify continue to fuck with me
Maybe Video Station (but I'm currently used to accessing my NAS from VPN for videos)

Is there a way to copy the rysnc differences to an HDD and use that as the main data transfer, rather than via network? My situation is my storage size is large enough that large file transfers would take months up to a 1 year+. I will have two servers, the initial sync will be done locally, but moving on they'd be remote and sync over the internet. Is it possible to perform an rysnc, see exactly what is different, copy only that data to an external drive, the physically take that drive to the remote location and plug it into the backup server to copy across? I literally don't have a better idea short of physically bring the second server with me everytime I need to do a large rsync.

>they both have to be connected via rj45 to the router to connect to the wider ethernet/internet
>the isolated subnet is created in dd-wrt via a port setting (when work laptop is on ethernet) and a separate SSID
the main problems are
>1. since my bedroom ap/switch and router aren't in a mesh network, sometimes devices "stick" to a weaker signal
>2. the main router and bedroom ap/switch give good coverage for my main network, but there's a deadzone in my bedroom/balcony for my work laptop
>3. my desktop runs GNOME and sometimes its network manager thinks all traffic should go over the DAC, which means I have to disconnect/reconnect to get it going over the rj45 connection (this never happens in Windows)
for 1, do i need to buy/build a new mesh network? my router is old (Buffalo WZR-600DHP2) and doesn't support mesh networking. my bedroom ap/switch is an tp-link archer 6, which does support it though (I think)
for 2, I'll probably just buy a cheap $25 repeater since I don't care about handoffs
for 3, I think I have to suck it up and buy a switch with both rj45/sfp+. I'm thinking of https://www.amazon.com/Mikrotik-CSS326-24G-2S-RM-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B0723DT6MN

I have shitload of old drives with no idea what's in them, can I just ddrescue them into images and mount them later? Like if there's a plain NTFS drive I can mount the saved image as a 1:1 copy of the drive?

The other obvious solution would be mounting drives directly and copying files but the drives have been sitting for 10 years and dd'ing them could be safer.
>>
>>101191102
This question is more suited for >>>/g/fglt/
But answering your question: Yes, it is easier if you make separated images for partitions instead of a single drive, then do:
# mount -o loop /path/to/partition_image /media/mountpoint

If you decide to dd the complete drive you'd need to tell the kernel to map partitions with
kpartx -v -a path/to/disk_image

And then mount -o loop /dev/mapper/loop0pX where X are the partition numbers

warning: retard alert
I'm looking at moving my disks onto a NAS. I'm just gonna build a lower-tier PC and throw the drives in.
I have 2x 18TB drives in EXT4 with one full and the other just a little full.
I was going to move to freeNAS, which seems to only run on zfs.
Before I commit to this, can someone tell me if I'm going to get hit with a roadblock trying to take my 2 drives and moving them into ZFS? Can I just plug in the drives, run some commands, and have it pop out as a nice zpool with my data intact? Or am I gonna have to buy an intermediate drive, pool the first 2, move my data, then add the third drive?
>>
>>101193009
>with my data intact
Nope. Any change to the filesystem will delete your data. If your second drive was empty then it would've been relatively painless to put zfs on that and copy data over, then mirror the disks, though you would lose some capacity on metadata.
Instead of bothering with truenas, you should use the server/headless variant of the OS you're used to. That way they can still stay ex4 and you can work on adding redundancy or a backup solution.
I hope you have a budget for disks. I'm surprised you didn't use the second disk for backups and just running 18TB+ raw.
>>
>>101193132
Actually I just deleted a few folders (movies I downloaded for my dad) from the main drive and now I have a clear, empty second drive and about 2tb free on the first drive. So zfs->copy data->mirror?

>>
>>101193253
zfs on empty drive
mount the ext4 as read only
then copy everything over into the datasets/organization you want.
You can mirror if you want or keep the disk as a backup until you get more disks.

If you insist on truenas, do not attach the disks until the OS has been installed.

I'm so excited!!! I bought an HP EliteDesk 800 G4 from eBay last week for around $130 total ($110 + $18 shipping + taxes)

It was listed with these specs:
i7-8700 CPU
32gb ram (4x 8gb)
256gb SSD

when I opened it up it had all of that + a 512gb NVME SSD connected to the motherboard. I don't know why they didn't list that but I feel like I got a great deal.

This is my first server PC ever and I'm really not even sure where to start with it. I mostly wanted to use it as a NAS but now I'm seeing that I can put in a low profile GTX 1650 graphics card in it and there's two 3.5inch hard drive bays in it for me to use so I'm thinking of buying a 12tb or 16tb used hard drive and putting that in here. I definitely need more space.

I can apparently also max it out with 128gb of ram but idk where that even makes sense to do..

I'm also seeing a lot of people using Docker to run their apps on their home servers. This doesn't really make sense to me cause why would you use Docker to run something like Plex or a web server when you could just run Plex or a web server straight from your home server? Wouldn't using Docker to do this just use more resources like RAM? idk there's a lot to learn about servers and stuff. I really just wanted it to tinker with it. I thought about keeping Windows on it since that would be the easiest thing for me to use but maybe I should install Ubuntu on it? Again, my only real needs are for media sharing to my TV or other computer which is on the same network so maybe it doesn't matter what OS I use for that.

>>
>>101195815
>This doesn't really make sense to me cause why would you use Docker to run something like Plex or a web server when you could just run Plex or a web server straight from your home server?
using docker means you basically get an OS image with the application already installed and ready to use and it's kept separate from your host OS (it still runs on the host kernel though so it doesn't really use significantly more resources like a VM would).
this means it's easier to set up, and you avoid having a bunch of loose dependencies and configuration files scattered throughout your host OS that the application depends on. it's clean and lets you easily migrate the application to another machine or host OS installation without worries, and also avoids potential conflicts between different applications if they share dependencies.
on the other hand, docker images are often black boxes that you're not expected to look inside of, and if you run into weird problems/want some non-standard configuration, you're probably gonna be fighting docker for it a lot more than if it was installed on bare metal. and you usually learn a lot more by installing stuff manually vs using docker.
if you don't want a ready-to-use solution and prefer to do it yourself for learning purposes, I recommend a normal non-docker installation, but you can still use something like lxc containers to set up a separate OS from your host to install on, kinda like a VM but again without the extra resource use.

>I thought about keeping Windows on it since that would be the easiest thing for me to use but maybe I should install Ubuntu on it?
If you're using it for NAS purposes, you probably want some flavor of linux on it since you have a lot more options for things like raid. Ubuntu server is fine, but if this is your first time messing with a linux terminal, there's definitely a learning curve.

I'm still learning about servers and I am attempting to install Tailscale now so that I can in theory connect to my home server when I'm not at home and still access my data.

Thank you for the explaining Docker and why it's good. That does make sense to keep dependencies and everything separate. I do frontend development and some projects require different versions of Nodejs and NPM to run and I can see how just having the project inside of a Docker image just simplifies getting the project set up and lets you get to work faster instead of dealing with bullshit installation and set up problems.

Hello, I'm looking to get started in the homelab world and so I looked up someone else's recommendation of picking up a used HP DL360 or Dell 730 and have a question.

Those rack systems are sold without a GPU on ebay but do have integrated an matrox g200, which has 8mb of vram. I would need to add my own GPU to make the server able to run the workloads like Plex/Jellyfin, right?

I'm also not sure what "half length" means in

Hello /g/ents, I'd like some advice with NFS.

I run Windows Server 2019, and sharing data via NFS to clients on my network.
My problem is, NFS upload speeds are saturating the 1Gb link the server has, but download speeds cap at around ~250Mb (~40 MB/s) speeds.
I tried fine tuning the NFS server's parameters and the mounting options on my desktop PC (Win10), nothing changes.
Meanwhile, if I'm mounting my server with SMB, both upload and download speeds reach 1Gbps.

From what little I saw it's not uncommon for people to use AliExpress CPU/motherboard combos for their home servers and I was pleasantly surprised by AliExpress quality before (when I doubled check the store is the official one) but I've never bought anything quite this expensive there.

I'm asking less in terms of performance and more in terms of reliability and it not shitting itself for esoteric and/or unfixable reasons.

That's not a server, and it's also (soon to be) e-waste.

It's a single M.2 slot one, so no bifurcation or onboard controllers, just the cheapset and most basic ones you can get. A Gembird one in R330 and Ugreen one in ML110 G9, both work without issues.
I've no experience with multiple M.2 ones sadly.
I boot off PM883 SATA in my R330 (2.5" in optical drive bay), so i don't need more that one M.2 slot (although RAID1 for boot drive could be nice i guess).

The most "correct" way to have RAID1 for booting is to use a Dell BOSS card (Dell BOSS-S1), but those are only supported starting from 14th generation PowerEdge and up (R340 for 1U).
The two other correct ways are to use a SATADOM, or formerly IDSDM but the latter is deprecated by VMware in newer versions.

On my desktop or the server? The server's NICs are all onboard, and the only expansion slot is occupied by the RAID controller.
There are some offloading settings in the device properties, should I switch any of them to disabled? Large send offload v2, tcp/udp checksum offload, ns offload, etc.

If you have a managed switch in between, look at the counters for packet loss/errors. Use a good pre-terminated patch cable, connect directly with a patch cable and use static IPs if you need to test.

Not bad. I'd love to stop using SwissMade, but there's so much work in just handling new stuff it's hard to find time to migrate old stuff.

But thanks, i will consider this next time I'm buying.

No, that's for children and women. Especially the part where you shared your emotions on an anonymous image board. Now, answer my question.

Let people enjoy their autism and share their excitement anon, not their fault that you're so grumpy

You'll want to check the manual for where you can hide the 2.5" so it's not in the way of 3.5" disks. For mounting the 3.5" disks, you can find the 'official' HP mounting screws on ebay but I think you can get away with just normal screws in the side of your disks but not tightened all the way. If you weren't going to use the pcie or disk bays, you could've got a usff instead but you'll have more options to add nonsense to this. You have to keep to half length cards however and don't expect to sufficiently cool ancient quad 10gbit nics without some jank rigging.

The way linux works, they reuse a lot of common tools/commands. Docker and other containerization/virtualization structures allow you to isolate those settings so garbage programming doesn't fuck with your own settings or cause conflicts from version differences.
You can never have enough ram but I wouldn't really go out of your way to buy sticks until you find a need, hopefully you have some lying around. Don't expect to overclock, tweak, or do anything special with the ram either so don't bother getting fast ram. Most apps are pretty light but expect some "needs java runtime" that'll eat a shitton doing nothing.

Intel N-series only has 2 native sata ports, so anything extra has to be on a new chip and most just throw on the cheapest assmedia they can find. They'll 'work' but will probably shit themselves if i/o is too intense because they still have to share lane bandwidth to the cpu.
This is going to be the same story among most N-series boards because nobody wants to pay the extra cost to get more suitable chips.

generally those mobile CPUs lack IO, you're stuck with whatever amount of SATA lanes there are on the chipset (typically 2) + maybe some PCIe for HBA expansion (LSI 9211 wants 4 lanes of PCIe 2.0 per SAS port, 1 SAS port has 4 SAS lanes, each SAS lane is equal to 1 6Gbps SATA).
But many of those boards prefer to use up those PCIe lanes for M.2, meaning you'd need to get those janky M.2 -> PCIe adapters.
Socketed CPUs tend to have more IO, even something built upon small desktop socket like the E3-1270v5 mentioned (LGA 1151) has ECC, 4 onboard SATA and 16 PCIe lanes, enough to accomodate 1 M.2 SSD, LSI 9211-4 for 4 additional SATA ports and a 10+Gbps network card.
Bigger sockets like LGA 2011 or LGA 3647 have even more IO, though they might be hard to find in ATX form factor (unless you want to use one of those chinese X99 frankenboards). You can get then in servers/workstations though.
