Same link, use Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

W10/W11 Home/Pro/Edu/Enterprise
-Avoid
-Only 1.5-2 yrs support
-No control over updates
-Preinstalled bloatware apps (games, music, news, weather, onedrive, start menu ads, etc)

Yes, in business environments that can't or won't upgrade system critical architecture hardware that's already running 10 IoT LTSC. Thorough what they're doing they can upgrade it to an 11 backend without needing new parts.

It helps if you can give your VMs at least 4GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores so they actually feel worth using in the first place, so if you at least can't offer that much performance to them then don't bother IMO.

Sorry to be an idiot but I've stumped at the start of installing W10 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2021. Got the ISO, in the installation screen and now it's asking for a product key. But from what I've understood, MAS is for when you've installed Windows, no?

Also another silly question, but I assume this will still phone home to Microsoft, right? If I'm trying to be more privacy focused is it better to just go with Linux?
>>
>>101308715
Select "I don't have a product key."
You activate Windows a bit later on after you've gotten your cumulative update/drivers installed and the like.
If you want the activation to not call home (like MAS's HWID does) you can activate with KMS_VL_ALL or MAS's KMS38 module to activate without having it connected to an MS activation server.

I bought a used elitebook g6 850 without an OS.
I tried installing win10 and win11 and it requests the intel rapid storage drivers before showing the screen for the disk formatting.
I searched the web, I extracted the inf files from the driver provided by HP and intel separately and it tells me that they are not compatible.
I tried Win11_23H2_EnglishInternational_x64v2.iso and Win10_22H2_English_x64v1.iso
Is there a more recent version of windows that works with this piece of shit?
I tried disabling VMD from bios but there isn't there any such option.

Remake the USB? Try using Ventoy instead of Rufus if you went that route?
>>
>>101309362
>Remake the USB?
could this be the problem?
I used dd, because I am on linux.
>>
>>101309388
Oh yeah that's definitely the problem. Making Windows USBs with dd never works.
You should use Ventoy in this case because it works on Linux as well. The other way being making the USB manually via formatting it as FAT32 and then installing wimlib from your package manager and splitting the install.wim file so it can fit in a FAT32 filesystem. Using Ventoy is easier (make sure to format it as exFAT/GPT with secure boot support.)

Unfortunately I think I'm gonna have to go with Win 11 Edu, at least temporarily.

How should I install it? I assume Microsoft's own's media creator is a no-no. Download the plain .iso and burn it wth Rufus? How do I make it so I'm not forced to connect to the internet and sign-in/sign-up to a MS account?
>>

Why not pro? It's free either way after all
>>
>>101310910
Download ISO from Microsoft.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11/
Use Rufus to make a bootable USB.
Later activate it with MAS.
>How do I make it so I'm not forced to connect to the internet and sign-in/sign-up to a MS account?
Rufus has an option to disable that.

What is the recommended CPU fan control software? I'm using Windows 10 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2021 on a Dell Inspiron 5448. I suspect that the small freezes I'm experiencing just before the CPU fan goes BRRRR- are related to poor default fan settings.

Realistically, how long after Oct 2025 will Win 10 be safe to use for? I know there won't be any crazy risk straight away. As long as Firefox gets updates, and Defender gets definition updates, should be a good while, right? At least 3 years?
How long was 7 good for until even the average holdout started thinking, "yeah, time to move on"? Until it because riskier and/or more of a hassle than not to stick with?

Really at a crossroads here between installing 10 Edu vs 11 Edu on new hardware (I HATE SETTING UP WINDOWS FROM SCRATCH WITH A PASSION. WOULD RATHER ONLY DO IT ONCE INSTEAD OF TWICE. But it's that hassle vs the hassle of using shitty 11 for a few extra years unnecessarily. That's the debate. Really depends on how many years I can realistcally use 10 for after EOL.)

>What about LTSC bro?
I just don't trust the ISO. I'm 99.99% sure it's fine, but I just cannot take that risk. The Edu ISOs are direct from Microsoft, it gives me peace of mind. I hope you understand.

Is there anything one should know when downgrading from Windows 11 to Windows 10 for gaming? Are there any reasons not to do it? I see that gaming performance is slightly better on Windows 10, and RTX HDR is apparently better than auto HDR, so there's no reason to stick with Windows 11, that's the extent of my knowledge on the matter.

With the permanent partition bug that Microsoft said they wont fix, there is literally no reason to use Windows 10 LTSC anymore. Even Windows 11's LTSC ISO is a smaller size, because it's more debloated.

I always use the stock drivers from the manufacturers website because they're tried and tested. I don't even trust Windows to get the right drivers either because I've also encountered issues there. I install the ones off the website and disable driver updates, this is the most rock solid stable combination in my experience. I've had like a half a dozen laptops in my life and I've had issues where I would just get the latest version of realtek or intel shit drivers and the laptop would have tons of issues after. The laptop manufacturers only test the machines with those specific drivers on the website and if they change anything in the later drivers then you're just fucked. You'll need to edit the ISO with AnyBurn to add ei.cfg to the sources folder to bypass the forced Home selection. This is easier with Rufus because you can just add it after the flashing is done.

kek, who is going to tell him? Anyway, get rid of this garbage illegitimate iso and use the paste links. You can confirm the hash with a free Visual Studio account.

It honestly sounds like you have no clue what you are doing and just followed this random guide for whatever reason. Please just follow the guides in the paste for this thread, they literally tell you how to do everything.
As far as whether or not DNS is configured correctly that depends on how you want shit to behave?? If you want to check for a DNS leak use this https://www.dnsleaktest.com/. You're better off configuring your DNS at a network level by the way.

>i dont know what im doing
This is one of those things where it's really best to dig in and learn a bit, mainly just because it's vastly safer. If you absolutely don't want to create your own ISO, simply opt for post-install tools.
Unfortunately support for Optimize-Offline appears to be sunsetting, but for the moment it's still the best transparent tool for ISO creation and there is a guide for that.

>>
>>101328444
This is one of those times where you have to weigh the cost:benefit of this autism. If this is something that you're doing on an irregular basis, literally just use Super/Windows Key + Shift + Left/Right (depending on where the monitor is mapped).
>Automation
If you need to mass open a bunch of files and have them sorted by monitor, create a python automation or maybe a script?? that checks the ratio of each file and then opens it based on closest match per monitor.
>Image viewer
As far as controlling the behavior of opening images, qView for Linux and JPEGView for Windows have highly customizable config files but to my knowledge the monitor preference flags can't be dynamic.
You also wouldn't be able to create persistent monitor preference through the image viewers themselves as well, so that would again rely on whatever automation you create.

At that point you're basically creating your own application, any other anons feel free to call me retarded if I'm missing some existing tool. The only other shit I know of is this https://github.com/rlv-dan/PhotoSift or Adobe Bridge, but I'm not really sure if those fulfill what you're looking for.

Building a new PC and it has a AMD 7950X3D, so if I'm going to have a Windows install at all, its gotta be Win11 to get the latest scheduler/threaddirector2 . In addition, if I'm going to game at all, I read that apparently those with multiple CCDs and X3D cache, at one point it basically had some sort of stupid relying on the Xbox Game Bar to decide which cores to toss to which applications in an oversimplified
>IF Xbox Game Bar active for this application
>THEN prefer Cache cores , its a game
sort of shit. Now I'd hope that things have gotten better for scheduling and to not rely on a proprietary Xbox bar to decide what cores do what on a fucking halo tier product, but maybe it hasn't changed? Yes, I know you can fuck around with process lasso and manually do it all yourself (is there a Linux equivalent of process lasso?) but it shouldn't require it for general use I'd think, or at least have some built in profiles or heuristics.

So with all that in mind, I'm guessing I should try and get Win11 LTSC Enterprise but NOT the IoT version?

It doesn't default to anything. It's just the DWORD that's set when you enable the Allow Telemetry/Diagnostics group policy and set it to 0.
Though Windows telemetry basically defaults to optional telemetry unless you change that to "needed" in the OOBE. Off/Security only exists through said policy/registry tweak and only for Enterprise/Education editions.

I tried Linux again after more than four years. It's now more power efficient than Windows and more pleasant to use compared to my previous Linux experience. I discovered tools like Flatpak, Toolbox, and Bottles, which was exciting (though this may be due to chatbots actually answering questions instead of relying on Google searches). However, after several days, I still find it too impractical for long-term use, even though I no longer need a chatbot for assistance. While I'm not a developer, I'm also far from a regular user who complains about everything. It's just not practical for me in the long run.

I'll likely return to Windows 10 soon.

I'm considering fully disabling Windows Defender. I usually just disable SmartScreen and every process with network access while still allowing updates, but maybe I should just get rid of it entirely instead of keeping some security measures (since it runs intensively at random times). It's not like it has ever really helped me due to my cautious approach (I use privacy.sexy).

Do you have any open-source recommendations to speed up my initial configuration and improve overall system performance? I typically start with SimpleWall.

Ah, and what could someone tell me about why we trust Windows 11 IoT LTSC? Does an official Microsoft site confirm its checksum? I would rather not touch it if not.

Just make a quick network search about the exe, then allow or block it.
It shouldn't take much time (except if you have hundreds of programs requiring internet access), and try to restart to speed up the detection.

Usually, most programs (the default ones) in System32 should be allowed, but I still block some depending on what I find online and my intuition.

Also, check the folders where the executables come from. Some programs try to act smart by creating new exes in another folder, which is why blocking everything by default is useful.

To be honest, this is just the most straightforward firewall I've seen.

Well the people saying that are lying through their teeth I guess. It's easy enough to just use something like ShutUp10 to disable all the telemetry shit in a couple clicks anyway.

i'd love to keep running only linux too but the modern amd drivers are all fucked up and i fell for the gaming meme so probably gotta dual boot this junk. maybe nvidia would work better but not gonna know that anytime soon. with both of my amd cards any game with heavier graphics will crash the driver which sometimes manages to recover with the reset function but sometimes requires a full power cycle to come back. luckily for other stuff like web browsing it works just fine so i can use it for most things
>>
>>101345640
thanks. i always forget those names but trying dd first since i wont need to install any extra stuff to do that. i believe back in the day you had to do some wizardry to make it think that it was a cd drive or something but back then no one used usb drives for installing these things
>>
>>101345693
Seems like most of those don't apply or are covered by my LTSC installation.
Think I'll leave it enabled for now.
Thanks anon

dd doesn't work with Windows ISOs these days. You'll never be able to make it through he setup because it'll constantly say it needs a driver to continue that doesn't exist. If you're on Linux, easiest would be to just use Ventoy, though you can also make it manually via mounting a Windows ISO, mounting a USB and formatting it as FAT32, copying over all the files in the ISO besides the sources folder, then making a sources folder and copying everything into it besides the install.wim file, then install wimlib with your package manager to split the install.wim on the ISO into two install.swm files on the USB so they fit in the FAT32 restrictions. Then you should be able to boot it like a normal USB because of the EFI executable.
>>
>>101345747
wow that sucks. guess i'll do the ventoy thing then its pretty convenient anyway and i even used to have it somewhere

it doesnt do any of that shit on windows 10
all its supposed to do is stop the windows background shit from running like windows update, system maintenance, etc., while you are playing a game
i dont even think it works at all on 10

I'm waiting for the retail version. Is the official release still in October? Or is it safe to install now?
>>
>>101346619
The current open preview that massgrave offers has had plenty of good reviews from anons so you might as well try it if you want. The retail version will just be this open preview with the October cumulative update baked in.

snappy driver installer origin is free of malware and open source so you can check/compile it yourself.

One of the big security events for Windows 10 that everyone freaked out about had to do with SMB. SMB isn't even installed by default on Windows 10. So no home users were effected. It also had to fulfill several other things to open up the exploit.

I'll need to reinstall windows for work
If I want to dual boot on the same ssd, I can just install windows first and make another partitition from there to install linux in right?
I have a second drive that I would like access to on both windows and linux, ntfs should work? or do I need fat32?

just installed 11 ltsc. How do I get rid of this??
>>
>>101347411
Install Windows first, then shrink the C:\ drive for the amount of space you want to give the Linux install. Then the Linux install should create an entry for the Windows install while it's installing in its bootloader, which you then should be able to make the Linux partition the main boot drive for your PC so it uses its bootloader but still let you access the Windows install. And yes, make the drive NTFS as Linux has been able to access NTFS drives for ages.

It's just a Win32 calculator, anon. It ain't hurting no one.
Though you could probably just remove it with Get-AppxPackage "UWP app" | Remove-AppxPackage

Linux exists. Imagine using an illegal os possibly filled with actual spyware from Microsoft and whoever you downloaded it from instead of just legally switching to to Linux...

Are windows 10 updates even useful?
Can I not just pause them but rather turn them off and install only when I press the button myself?
>>
>>101348956
You can just set the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy to just notify you when there's updates to download and download/install them as you please. Or just disable WU all together by disabling that policy and getting update files manually from the update catalog.

This is why /fwt/ recommends the Enterprise/Education editions because it actually lets you.
>>
>>101345851
That's the point. It used to be a meme on older windows (10), now it's important on 11. You need it just to get Freesync/Gsync not to bug out with fullscreen apps. It's still a thing on 10 (that's why Nvidia and everyone else tells you only apply Gsync to borderless only instead of border+full) but this doesn't happen on 11.

Not in Home, and barely in Pro (lots of restrictions.)
Enterprise and Education is basically "do what you want" as MS care more about businesses then people.

So I've installed this on a couple of machines and pretty happy with it. On my brothers machine though, Adobe Lightroom is complaining it requires 22H2 for the latest version. What version should I switch to?

I was having some insomnia when suddenly my pc boot up at 2:00 am by itself. I got up and went to turn it off and I got the message "someone is still using the pc any unsaved progress will be lost" or something like that. What the fuck happened? I'm using windows 11 ltsc if that helps.

Hello /fwt/, i forget which program was recommended to test that a flash memory is legitimate, could you guys remind me ?

IE to make sure a 64 GB flash memory isnt just a 4GB flash memory that falsely "reports" its 64 GB to your OS

I know h2wtest was good but it takes forever, there was one that was faster afaik

It really helps when it comes to the rare program that won't load on 2021 because of the feature pack or whatever. Though honestly I'm guessing by the time 2024 leaves open preview in October basically everyone will just use that instead for new installs.
