Complete hardware retard here. I want to do cool AI shit like running stable diffusion models and such on my poverty station.

I have seen people hooking up external GPUs to Memepads with an expresscard adaptor. Is this still a thing? And what would you recommend me to get in order to toy with AI shit?

Also, does the CPU count for these things? Should I upgrade the CPU, too?

For older computers, you would need to find a pci-e lane on the motherboard, run a sketch pci-e cable from your motherboard to the card (if you have a spare port to do that too), buy an external video card and power supply (with an adapter as well), and hope that you would get 50-75% of the performance of the video card since you aren't using all of the 16 lanes, but rather 4 of the lanes.

Just build a desktop.

If I'm not wrong, you can connect an eGPU via the Expresscard port, but it gives abysmal performance. Nothing I care about too much, since I only want to run AIshit, not play games, but I wouldn't want to buy a GPU that is overkill for this setup.

get two jobs and get a desktop pc with the next gen flagship stuff
or wait for desktop replacement laptops that gave an intel cpu and nvidia gpu

me again
how good are dell workstation laptops?
the best laptops have the 14900HX and 4090 mobile
get the next gen equivalent

Some t430s come with a thunderbolt port

After reading the specs people need to generate an image in 30 seconds, I have realized this is probably completely unfeasible. Oh well.

thats the out dated thunderbolt port

Here's my tldr
>thinkpads with onboard nvidia graphics can use an expresscard adapter without a 2nd screen through Optimus graphcis but the catch is your frames are usually raped
>Expresscard, or mPCIe, work for eGPUs, and you just have to figure out some way to route the cable from the mPCIe outside the case
>If you are serious about eGPUs, then you have to use a 2nd screen, no exceptions, there's too much fps loss.
>The caveat with the Optimus, native graphics type of laptop is that though you naturally have a larger heatsink, but actually you will still be using the onboard graphics, and so your processor will suffer in the way of processing power.
I have wondered if there were some sort of LVDS(for example) pinout board for video in, bypassing the motherboard and treating the laptop screen as an external. I haven't really looked into it.
