The 3DS was able to do it because its screen was low enough resolution that a parallax barrier placed in front of it could reasonably block out alternating pixel columns per eye. And even so, most people turned off 3D because it had about a 2 degree viewing angle before the effect broke apart into overlapping images. They had to add a movable parallax barrier and face tracking to expand it to a roughly 90 degree viewing angle, though you still want to stay roughly centered since 3D that's rendered or photographed straight on looks funky from an angle.
