It's been 5 hours and I'm taking a break. On the plus side, I think I know how the rest goes and there shouldn't be anymore setbacks. But man, there's been a slew of dumb problems, like my WC having all the labeled baggies being wrong letters and then missing a baggie (turns out that bag's screws were pre-installed, despite keeping the step in the manual), my PSU failing the power test before I installed it (turns out the "Hybrid Mode" button has ON meaning off and OFF meaning on), my dumb brain seeing the front USB 3.0 plug's notch doesn't match the mobo's USB 3.1 plug and thinking they can't work together, trying to figure out which side of the power switch plug is + and which is -. But I'm feeling confident now. Apart from unmounting and remounting the radiator, the last bits should be easy.

I missed the boat on the last general so -

Here is my Australian build - would ideally like to keep it around the $2k mark (monitor inc.) so any tips would be appreciated. All prices are in AUS $ and inc. shipping. Primary uses are productivity and reasonable FPS gaming.

CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K ($296.10)
CPU Cooler: Thermalright Frozen Edge 69 CFM Liquid ($137)
Motherboard: ASRock Z690 PG Riptide ATX LGA1700 ($249)
Memory: G.Skill Aegis 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 ($95)
Storage: Western Digital Black SN770 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive ($197)
Video Card: XFX Speedster SWFT 319 Radeon RX 6800 16 GB ($595)
Case: Montech AIR 903 MAX ($125)
Power Supply: MSI MAG A650BN 650 W 80+ Bronze ATX ($78)

Wireless Network Adapter: Intel AX200 M.2 ($40)
Monitor: Asus TUF Gaming VG27AQ3A 27.0" 180 Hz ($369)

Total: ~$2182

First build so any tips, shoot. Thank you.

The pump block assembly is good but the fans that come with it are really bad so you may want to swap it out for better ones.
I run mine with lian li's P28's and I haven't seen temps higher than 83C and that's with the cooler mounted as exhaust and being cooled by hot gpu air. If the gpu is not under load, the cpu never crosses 80C

I was playing a video-game and it was running like shit, despite it not looking very good. I checked Speccy, and my CPU temp is pretty high. What's the solution? Better fan set up?

I've got a Ryzen 5 3600 that just hit 80 degrees, before dropping to mid 60s. I expect that with my GPU sometimes. Not my CPU.

Also, my RAM is pretty old. I ran Speccy

Here you go. I'd suggest you go with ddr5 since the performance gains are quite significant today (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV3fDDLr918), and the board I selected comes with wifi built-in so you don't have to get your own.
>>
>>101505248
Looks good. I made a few minor changes to get it closer to $2k here: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/fMQpCd
Pretty similar overall to >>101505346's build which shows we're on the right track.

Not a problem unless it's thermal throttling. The boost algo sees it has tonnes of thermal headroom so it pushes the juice.

>Speccy
No. Use HWinfo for system summary.

>1066MHz
Assuming Speccy is reporting this correctly (lol), you should enable XMP/DOCP.

>DDR5
Incompatible with AM4.

>RAM upgrade
If you need more capacity because you like to keep 100 tabs open while gaming, buy a fresh 2*16GB kit of 3200C16 or 3600C18.

>What to do?
Go find out if your CPU is actually the problem. Use Rivatuner overlay and monitor the utilizations in-game. If it is, buy a 5700X3D. You will need to update the BIOS to use it.

Yes and DDR4-2133 is a JEDEC spec which means he most likely hasn't enabled XMP.

Building my first PC, have room to potentially upgrade a bit next year, I just need this starting build to be decent, affordable, and able for me to build fastish.

Most significant in bandwidth-constrained scenarios. Mostly workstation stuff but some games do see significant uplifts. Mainly current gen console ports, it seems.
>12600K/KF over 12400F
Most significant in CPU-bound scenarios or n-thread applications. Esports games, simulators, city builders, etc.

Nvidia's proprietary technologies aside, this would be the most significant for general gaming.

Hey, thank you for your responses.

I agree that biting the bullet and going with DDR5 is worth it so have considered that in my build along with the Wi-Fi in the mobo.

I reckon to err on the side of caution I’ll go with 6000 cl32 but that’s interesting to note. I’ve also made amendments to the cooler, likely opting for the Peerless Assassin as a cheaper option.
Appreciated!

Is this PSU worth getting? It's on a pretty big sale down from ~$205. Platinum 1000W, Japanese capacitors, ATX 3.0/PCIe 5.0 compatible and has a 12vhpwr cable included with 7 year warranty.

The problem is, I can't find any review on it besides some Hispanic tech store guy and some consumers who both said the PSU works fine, only there's a slight caveat with the fan. But the company itself is quite reputable.

I am a fucking retard and do the following:
- 1 Disk for /
- 1 Disk for /home
I want to buy some M.2 drives. Buying a 1TB drive for / seems completely absurd. Do they not make fast but small NVME drives? Everything is 500GB+ now (some are 1TB+) when I really just need like 128 or 256GB for /. This is replacing a decade old 256GB Crucial M4 that I use a whole 65GB of for my NixOS install...

It's at 2400 MHz, seems low. Is that the speed of your memory kit? Sometimes they can have multiple XMP profiles.
>It's actually a massive button beside OC Wizard or something. Not sure if it's worth turning that on either.
No, do not touch that shit. Never let your motherboard overclock your CPU. It will be unstable and/or fry your CPU.
>>
The sound chip on my motherboard crapped out, it only plays white noise or 250Hz sine waves if anything is plugged into USB2 ports (but not the USB3).

What could I get for my motherboard to get audio in good quality (low latency, no audio break ups, good snr)? There's no space on the board for a soundcard, so I'm stuck with something USB.
For now I have my headphones plugged into the xbox one controller, which is not optimal but it works (sound tends to break up randomly every once in a while).

Well I thought so too. I'm a bit paranoid right now. I just bought brand new card off ebay, the seller has 99.8% good reviews and amount of reviews is in 4 digits, did provide super quick delivery (2 days, 2 days earlier than it described, and has actually sent me a message about it). The card was about 60-100£ cheaper than anywhere else which is a good a deal but not too good that I considered it be untrue. I got the card right now and the seal on the anti static bag is still intact, the S/N numbers on both the box and the card match too.
Here's where I'm, I was about to register warranty but I'm not sure I should. If I register the card not only I won't be able to return the card but if it has been tampered somehow I won't get any warranty either. Now im not sure how I should proceed
>>
>>101505958
putting the card in your system and testing it does not count as tampering so I would recommend you do that, also what card is it?

I do not wish to open the seal, test the gpu just to see that I'm right because if that's true then one, the seller can deny return because the seal was broken and the warranty registered, two the manufacturer could deny warranty since it has been tampred and might suspect it has been me who did it and I won't get warranty either. I'm probabaly paranoid but I can't help it. And its rtx 4070 super.
>>
Hi can someone please help me? I'm trying to find cheapest CPU to match my RX 590 8GB without bottlenecking, mobo locks me to pretty much only 6 and 7th gen Intel core CPU-s. Which one should I choose?
>>
>>101506036
if you bought this from eBay then you have extremely strong buyer protection if you test the card and it is not what you ordered and the seller refuses refunds then you can file a problem to ebay that the seller basically scammed and get a refund that way so I would highly recommend testing the GPU

I have some motherboard "basic knowledge" questions.
>What are the two ATX 12V Power Connectors for on my mobo?
>Where does the CPU get it's power from?
>Why does the manual say to connect one of the two ATX 12V Power Connectors to the PSU in addition to the main mobo power connector?
I'm joggin' my noggin' in thinking that maybe the ATX12V1 is for the CPU's power, and the second one is in case of a second CPU? But I have no idea, and pic related is literally all the information the manual gives on this. I don't know what the first one is for and why it's required or what the second one is for and why it's not required.
>>
>>101506077
and what about the warranty? If I do have to return it but I registered what happens then?
>>
>>101506088
the atx 12v1 connector is for your cpu some motherboards include a second connector for extra power delivery for high end intel CPU's which can use in excess of 250w under load
>>
>>101506120
That's exactly what I was worried about. I have an i9 14900. How do I know if I need the second one? The intel manual tells me fuck all.
>>
>>101506112
you said in your first post you was "about to" register the warranty, regardless if the seller is refusing refund and you are using ebay (I assume) the you WILL get a refund from ebay)
>>
>>101506038
it's cheaper to buy a ryzen and a motherboard. old i7s are always overpriced
>>
>>101506138
>How do I know if I need the second one

you absolutely do need it then since that is an extremely power hungry chip

also unrelated but recently it has been discovered that certain high end chips from Intel (especially the i9-14900/k) have been shipping from the factory faulty and you may encounter issues or total failure after a few months of usage, sorry to be the bearer of bad news
>>
>>101506171
Whelp. That'll be a bummer if true, but nothing I can do about it now. Thanks for the answers. Is there a way I could know the cable demand without having to guestimate based on the chip's power draw? I feel like the mobo manual should have had something like
>if X, you need to use both
or intel's manual should have had
>requires two 8-pin ATX12Vs...
but I couldn't find anything. Mobo especially; that pic is from the pdf version. It really says absolutely nothing, let alone the conditions for why.

This. 5800X3D performance is fucking 95% of a 14900K in 4K resolution. And in MOST games the 4090 will STILL be the limiting factor and the 5800X3D will be at like 30-40% CPU usage in afterburner.

this just simply is not true a 5800x3d can indeed hold back a 4090 quite substantially especially since it will be using ddr4 ram

cpu bottlenecking depends on the game and resolution
higher res always means more emphasis on gpu, now ddr4 vs ddr5 does impact fps a bit but it wouldnt be terrible to run a am4 system with 4090

Not just a gaming load, I mean full on power throttle with tensor cores engaged

If you can afford it, upgrade the motherboard to one of the B650s they offer (the Gigabyte Eagle AX is good).
It will be better in the long run if you want to upgrade to a 9800x3D or else later on.

what country are you in I will see if I can make something better on PC part picker, that pre built is okay I guess, it has a bad MB and ram is a tiny bit slow but a very good GPU for the price

Need some advice about fans. Small blog greentext for context.

>building a new PC soon, just building on partpicker right now
>found a case I like that has everything I need
>case only has 1 fan, need to buy more, don't want water cooling
>only fits 120mm fans because its apparently a very old case (I need the CD port and lots of front USB ports)
>want to replace the exhaust fan as well to have consistent dB all around, in total I need 4 fans
>budget isn't a big deal because I still have a few months to save for it
>but also not trying to drop $100+ on just fans

what do you recommend /g/? Any outstanding price/performance fans you'd advocate for? I've only ever used stock fans or whatever Best Buy had on the shelf before in my first PC build but they've been hit or miss as far as noise goes I started off looking at these be quiet! silent wings fans but they only go up to 1450rpm so I'm not entirely sure if that'll be good enough airflow for my planned build (4080S + 7800X3D). But at only ~17dB it's tempting. A few other be quiet! fans around but all of them are about the same, ~1500rpm and ~18dB. I looked at a couple of Noctua fans because I know they're very reputable and my build isn't RGB so I don't mind the weird colors, but ~$31 per fan feels steep. Ultimately I care more about the noise than I do about the price but I'm also trying to be mindful of not pissing away money unnecessarily. Any advice?

Just bragging rights on OC communities & leaderboards, 0 practicality.
Responsible workstation builders and hardware administrators set these high-performance components to be as boring (stable) as possible.
The higher-end 13th & 14th gen Intel Core processors are still getting bricked under those safer operating conditions.
I'm not talking about Intel Guideline specs that just feed more volts to the CPU to stabilize higher clock frequencies.

High-end PC components can pump more than enough frames, including minimums, for competitive games anyway.
You'll never hear a genuinely good gamer using a high-end PC say he lost a match because the other guy's got better 0.1% fps lows.

>>101509012
>what country are you in
Croatia. Prices here suck. For any bigger purchase it's cheaper for me to order internationally. Even ordering games from Japan is cheaper than ordering it here + VAT.
>>
>>101508849
There is no simple answer - as the ongoing intel fiasco is showing if something else in the chain is unstable (cpu or ram being the two main culprits) and that is feeding your gpu garbage the gpu can crash. I would certainly start by looking at the gpu but a driver crash is not inherently caused by a gpu in of itself.
>>
>>101509034
It will be funny to see 11th gen "waste of sand" owners having the last laugh
>>
>>101509021
>be quiet! silent wings fans but they only go up to 1450rpm
There's the Silent Wings 4 high speed version that goes up to 2500rpm which should easily be enough especially since their selling point is good acoustics which means you don't want even higher speeds like the Pro version offers. I actually looked into them recently and they seem pretty good when balancing performance with noise, though people are going to say it's overpriced when they compare it to stuff like Arctic.
>>
>>101508970
Do it. You'll feel slightly happier every time you see it. It's stupid, and possibly a waste of money, and slightly impacts start up times and overclocking leaderboards (won't affect gaming tho)

But you'll grin from ear to ear everytime you change up the central gif to a pepe or something. I'd do it.
>>
cant really say i regret getting the 3050, sure i could have gotten something better on ebay used but cant really get to trust miners hopefully used 40xx series will be a safe bet in 3 years, at lower chance of being used for mining ? also those gaming oc special editions look like then way go right? cant think of a reason why miners would want to pay for those editions if they just care about performance /price ratios and not rgb memes or triple fans , I am all about budget honestly, or maybe the new meme is AI training clusters?
>>

It depends on the model of the 4080 Super.
NVIDIA's vBIOS has an 83°C baseline and 88°C OC thermal limit for the GPU (non-hotspot), some of the base MSRP cards with the smallest possible heatsink paired & the cheapest fans will run near the 83°C limit under high-stress loads (CUDA, Tensor, & RT cores fully utilized).

My 4080 Super FE was averaging nearly 80°C from running 3DMark Speed Way for 20 consecutive runs (355W maximum power limit, 1440p, heaviest RT benchmark).

Cards like the ASUS TUF & Strix or the PNY XLR8 have oversized coolers with good fan curves to keep them running relatively cool and quiet, but ASUS fucked up with the thermal paste application.

Whats the best way to disable HDD's built into the PC when not using them?
I have one for my movie collection in my PC, but rarely use it. So it is spinning all day without any file being read or written.
I just want to spin it down unless I explicitly activate it. There was a program called revo sleep that had this feature, but it doesn't seem to disable my drives anymore.
Do you have any idea how to realize that?
>>

That just sets a custom color profile for Windows. What's happening is Chrome is displaying SDR videos incorrectly when in auto HDR but it shows it correctly when you scroll. If you watch Youtube in MPC-HC with YT-DLP this issue doesnt happen so its Chrome related but everyone just tells you to disable HW accel or change to OpenGL which is not a fix.

Fractal claims length limit of 355 mm, while the specs on the card says 357.6 x 149.3 mm. manufacturing issue or not, you can see from failure statistics that it primarily affects i9s, much less on i7, and i5s are barely affected at all. logically the i5 should be more popular because it's a much cheaper chip
it's simple degradation from too much voltage

>Thumbnail referencing P-Core VID (amount of voltage being requested), not Vcore (rough measurement of voltage being delivered to the CPU core).
VID is worth monitoring only if the motherboard's CPU LLC setting is calibrated to match the ACDC load-line characteristics.
Very few motherboard manufacturers bother to set this up properly, they end up setting lower-than-needed ACDC load-line values like Buildzoid found out on his board samples.

That's still better than overvolting the CPU like Intel customer support suggests doing if your chip's on the verge of croaking.
