Also, am I insane or does the older xx00 series keyboard feel better than the xx20 one? Layout is pretty much the same otherwise, but feels better quality somehow.

Welp, after over 8 years of service, my Yoga 14 is finally showing signs of the end of its lifespan. Hinge broke long ago, USB ports are breaking, and the SMART status failed in its latest HDD test, so it is time to replace it

thank you for the feedback. when i was installing 10 for the first time the other day, i responded to myself five (5) times in /fwt/ >>101638983 complaining about and trying to document the errors i faced in literally following the most basic instructions and not introducing anything else in between. no one replied to me at any point during the 22 hours between my original reply and my last reply to myself (or at any point from then until the thread died). so i expected the same here. i am still completely at a loss as to how i had such a huge problem installing windows 10

i managed to sort of fix it by going to "Ease of Access display settings" (how it's called in the search bar, but clicking it, the window only says "Settings" and "Display"), and turning on "Show animations in Windows". that somehow turned on smooth scrolling, after i disabled it somewhere. after fucking with it a bit, i see that in "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" in search (called "Performance Options") in the window itself), by checking "Animate controls and elements inside windows" i can toggle smooth scrolling. but the issue persists even with it on; it's just a cope, i guess. i really don't know what's happening

Update to this: I successfully installed win98. There weren't any gotchas to it and there was no need to load dos to the hdd and manually copy installation files, like some people on forums suggested. I just booted an OEM installation cd (retail needs a separate boot disk) and it just werks after installing appropriate drivers. DOS mode works well but I haven't done extensive tests yet. Overall I recommend doing this if you have a t42 and want a win98 machine. This one will be my dedicated Touhou machine along with some other classics. I'm also hoping to try some programming with it at some point (win98 doesn't have memory protection.)

Can be upgraded to 32GB+ even if you have the lowest amount of RAM possible in the soldered slot.
I would avoid the s models if you can, personally. A friend of mine used to say "the s stands for shitty". It usually means more stuff is soldered and you can't upgrade them as much. The standard T480 can have 64GB of RAM instead of 36/40GB, for example.
If that's the only thing you can get a good deal on, though, it's probably fine.

I bought a T470 to replace my T410 that died. It came with this keyboard layout and I fucking hate it. It's missing a button which is supposed to be in the red circle. It makes typing using my language's keyboard layout awful due to the missing < and > keys.
I also noticed that the special key on F11 isn't working (sending any keycodes). Is this normal on a T470 and Linux or is the key just faulty?

Each laptop had several different manufacturers of the keyboards. For example the 45N2211 was considered the best quality variant on the xx20's.
Take a keycap off both and see what color the dome is. If it has red (or even rarer red+blue domes such like in pic) it's likely NMB/Liteon which were considered the best with the xx20 series.

Good to know. I just realized that since the F11 key works, it's not a hardware issue.

>Are you German per chance? Because I got t480 with german keyboard and can't get used to it at all...
Yes, I bought it with a German layout, but it's not quite right. Pic related is apparently what a normal German layout looks like. It has the "greater than" and "lesser than" keys right next to the Y key. But this keyboard is lacking it. Why something like this exists in the first place is a mystery to me. Who thought to himself "hmmm, today I feel like having less keys".
My secondary layout has it on AltGr+, and AltGr+., but I'm still pissed about them taking a key away for no reason.

Buying a new keyboard will up the total to 220€ for this T470, which I feel like is way too much. Well, at least I know now to look at the actual picture of the keyboard instead of just reading which layout it has the next time I buy something.

But the laptop itself was "only" 100€, being almost new-old-stock (only 800h in SMART). Rest were mods. I did every common mod, with the best parts that made sense. 45N2211, N140HCE-EN1, i7-3740qm .. Former two being almost unobtanium now.
The one mod I still want to do is to swap out the Thinklight for an amber one.

After some research, it appears to be an ISO vs ANSI thing. The one I have is ANSI, with the thin Return key and missing key next to the left Shift. The one posted is ISO, with the L shaped Return and the additional key.
Upon closer inspection, it doesn't appear that there are stickers on my keyboard. It's indeed an anomaly: German ANSI layout.

T410 screens are 16:10 so the dimensions wouldn't be the same as a T420 or T430 screen which are 16:9. The screen connector is probably the same between them but it wouldn't fit right in there. Afaik the ranking goes something like this: NMB/Liteon* best, Chicony almost as good, Alps mushy trash.
The NMB/Liteons are just way better built. I actually have 3 liteon keyboards (2 t420 and one 1 t430) and all of them are excellent, very tactile and keyfeel really consistent.

*There's 45N2211's both under NMB and Liteon branding, they are the exact same keyboards though. Little unclear what happened but probably something along the lines of NMB sold its keyboard division to Liteon.

>*that* modder
Probably are not, there are plenty of us here, unless you specifically remember these pics.
But I have the InnoLux N140HCE-EN1 Rev.C2 on this. I really like the panel, 1300:1 contrast and better placed sRGB primaries than some professional monitors. All around excellent calibration and blacks just look really good (for an LCD).
But it's not perfect, there's some incompatibility with the lvds-edp adapter which limits the brightness of it to 170 nits, but that's a problem only outdoors. The other issue is it's a 6bit panel which looks absolutely horrible in Windows, but fine in Linux due to dithering the intel drivers seem to do there ootb.

If you want to do a T430 IPS swap, go for the B140HAN01.3. While not similar color/contrast/uniformity quality, it reaches full 300 nits and also is 8bit. And A LOT easier and cheaper to find.
>>
>>101702845
>there's some incompatibility with the lvds-edp adapter which limits the brightness of it to 170 nits

>Also isn't there more colors on B140HAN01.3?
The gamut is worse but the bit depth is better.
N140 is bit more color accurate but the B140 has no gradient banding issues.
>>
>>101702213
You could say that about literally any brand of used laptop.
>>
>>101703657
I wonder if it could be due to the adapter you bought. I looked up other reviews of the screen and didn't find that issue.
>>
>>101704977
Which issue? The brightness issue is 100% caused by the LVDS-eDP adapter I got, which is the only adapter available. It doesn't officially support this panel.
The seller also recommends the B140HAN01.3. The N140 is a cool panel but I wouldn't recommend it over the B140 either, for one it's almost impossible to get.
>>
>>101705199
Yeah the brightness issue. I found a few r*ddit posts that talked about using that exact screen in an upgrade without that issue. Also I'm pretty sure there's some variance in the adapters that are sold. They all copy a design made by some dude years ago.
>>
>>101705261
Have they measured it? An untrained eye can't estimate nits for shit.
170 is still quite bright, unless you *know* what 300 nits is, you wont notice the issue. Even I didn't.
>>

>170 is still quite bright, unless you *know* what 300 nits is, you wont notice the issue. Even I didn't.
I don't know about that. According to thinkwiki the maximum brightness of the stock 1600x900 screen is 250 nits. I'm pretty sure you would notice the screen being 30% dimmer on the maximum brightness than the shitty TN panel. I mean maybe the blacks are deeper so it can hide the brightness a bit but come on.

You will not notice a mere 30% difference, especially when the colors, contrast and viewing angles are about 9000% better. Your eye adapts fast, your memory is terrible and all of your attention is on the vastly improved colors. You most likely didn't run the TN at 100% when you swapped it out either.
You just wont notice it this unless you have them side by side.

Oh, and there's a horrible tendency for cheap LCD panels to dim. I have some 5 year old Samsung panels that have dimmed from 250 nits to JUST 60 nits.
Unless you have a colorimeter it's impossible to know what nit anything is running at.

Not sure about prices in Britain, but at worst you are overpaying by 20-30 eur. If seller is trusted then go for it... Check if ram is 2x8 or 1x16.

Hmm, thanks for the input, lad. Any other models you might recommend? I'm looking at 200GBP max budget.
>>
>>101705642
I haven't bought one so don't know, but Aliexpress probably has some.
BUT be aware, that most of the listings will be selling "compatible" panels, not the actual B140HAN01.3. If the listing has the word "compatible" or similar anywhere in the listing, they likely wont send you an actual B140HAN01.3.
When in doubt, ask the sellers if they have and will send you an exact model.

That's fair enough. Yeah just want to mess around with it, like I said I'm a linux noob and want to experiment, with a view to using it as a general casual device - browsing, some writing/notes, media, maybe a tiny bit of simple GIMP usage.

Only very old 98, and some versions of 95 required booting from FDD first. I forgot the name, but later 98 will boot from CD and install just fine.
It is a perfect dos/98/XP machine for old games and retro stuff, but not much else, great keyboard and looks great, but that is kinda it.

>>
>>101710969
My idea banked on the original 1.8in microsata slot being your key point for mods since there was enough room to fit a 2242 sata m.2 sideways with 0 components on a custom pcb, leaving a shit load of board space and about 1.8 inches of the side of the laptop exposed to additional ports which you simply 3d print a new hdd cover with holes for the ports.
You can drag usb or even pci-e 2.0 from one of the nearby mini pci-e slots via flat ribbon cables.
The whole thing is zero permanent mods too

Oh you people talking about replacing audio of these thinkpads?
The one thing that shocked me about the T430 is just how absolutely atrocious the 3.5mm jack DAC is, it's completely unusable. I fixed it with a cheap USB-C donge attached to a USB-C-to-A adapter. Thought about expresscard solutions but none exist ...
But I don't know how to cope with knowing my beloved 400€ T430 is flawed in such a fundamental way ):
>>
>>101711343
Yeah, but the one on the x301 is actually really fucking good idk.
T420/30 and family users just got fucked with shitty isolation and it resulted in unusable trash audio unless you use really low sensitivity headphones
>>
>>101711437
For me the audio sounds compressed and distorted, not a crazy amount but exactly what you'd expect some 3 cent D-grade chinese DAC to sound like.
I thought it might have something to do with the low impedance and bad efficiency of my planar magnetic headphones but even through an external amp it just sounds like utter ass especially at higher volumes. It kinda sounds like the DAC's power delivery can't keep up.

Ultraprotip for T4x users. If your keyboard is NMB, you can use T6x NMB keys (the ones with the same size) on it. Why should you care? Some national layouts are available for the T6x but not for T4x. Get the keys from a T6x NMB keyboard and call it a day.

These days they're trivial to just directly buy from amiami. They have preorders open for some amount of weeks for some set of fumos, follow their twitter (@gift_news) to know availability in advance.
All the tariffs and taxes work really smooth these days too, you'll just get a text message from Posti when they want you to declare it.
2 fumos will cost you 107€ total incl shipping taxes and everything.

Another option is to buy bootlegs from Aliexpress. There are several actually quite high quality bootleg vendors these days. My Marisa v1 (picrel) is a bootleg from Lolicos iirc. I need a laptop for uni, but I already have a desktop that I will use when I'm home. So, I have been looking at second hand Thinkpads because they seem like the best bang for the buck.
I'm studying Computational Engineering, so I will do programming and machine learning mostly. I guess most laptops can handle that? Anyway, the laptop is mostly going to be used for simple stuff at uni when I need it. If i need more power, I'll use my desktop.

So, will any Thinkpad do? I don't really have a budget, but since this wont be my primary computer, I'd rather buy cheap?

Second hand options near me:

Option 1: Thinkpad T14 gen 1 (i5-10210u) with 16GB RAM for $270 USD.

Option 2: Thinkpad L480 (i5-8250) FHD with 12GB RAM and 256GB SSD for $180 USD.

Option 3: ThinkPad P40 Yoga Workstation (i7-6500u) with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Quadro M500M + optimus. Battery wear level: 17.8%. Price: $270 USD. ((((Non upgradeable RAM?)))

I have heard that AMD (in the T14) is way better than Intel, but I don't know if that matters for my use case.

Alternatively I might just get a macbook if thats better, lol.

Alright, I need some autism power from you guys.
Can anyone identify what kinda thinkpad models are we working with here? (bottom middle and right, obviously)
Might go for one if it's an x220 or 230.
No, I don't have a better picture
>>
>>101739903
flash libreboot

>>101739936
only middle one is good, its w530 or t530

the one on right is some garbage, its not x220/30 at all dont know where you got that from
>>
>>101739936
>>101739964
so apparently it's a t530 and an e330. Any of them good for anything?

the speaker grills on the side of the keyboard mean it's one of the bigger models like W series at or least T5xx instead of T4xx. no numpad though. that's probably a clue.
the keyboard on the bottom right one doesn't go right up to the edge like on an X220 so maybe it's a T series. I see that one has the newer style keyboard so *30 or newer. physical upper trackpad buttons mean it's not a [stock] *40 but they brought them back for *50
looking back at bottom middle I think it has the new style keyboard too, I didn't notice at first.
so neither one there is a *20 or older then
could be T530 and T430

E330 is a much cheaper X230 (of the same generation/time period). The E's were still markedly worse than T/X series at that point, I'd pass unless it was absurdly cheap (and by cheap I mean like $25).

why would you use t61 mobo? it doesnt support libreboot ruining the entire point

Not that guy but T61 is still borderline usable and can support 8gb RAM. Meant more back 15 years ago when Frankenpads were hot shit. In my small collection I have both - a librebooted T60 and a T601 Frankenpads (but it's Intel so it's kind of shit).

No, software bloat does though. And you have to be a patient person to tolerate JavaScript page loads (nevermind browser bloat) and your fan levitating the machine at the sight of extreme HD 480p video.

Yes, I'm aware Linux, WM-only DEs, NoScript, uBlock Origin, h264ify, tlp, and phc-intel exist [and they're the only thing that make a T60 marginally tolerable to use] but a lot of websites - normie old people shopping, news, maps, and banking websites - won't even function without JS. Yes you can use it but it's likely to not be a pleasant experience depending on your use case.

The T61 will at least let you use more than 3.5GB of RAM and has a 64bit processor (again, yes I'm aware you can slap a Merom in a T60 as well, and I have).

Don't be obtuse.

Yup, some machines still havent recoverd.
because of Libreboot/Coreboot & the classic IPS displays, Core 2 Duos, 2nd and 3rd gen systems are hella pricey. Some 4th gen system can get some sort of libre/coreboot I think. So I'd assume a high end spec T440p or T540p (idk if its Libre-able) would be some fuckall expensive thing when it gets more popular.

Some Pentium machines that had IPS versiosn, but aren't the fucking IPS unit, are sold for a lot... Even the G40 fucking thinkpad can sell for $200, and its sold as a GAMING laptop with its fucking terrible intel graphics.

What do I search to find the AC adapter that came with the Ultra Dock (40AJ)? It's the old square tip charger, not USB-C, and 130W. If I put Dock in my search I get docks, which don't even come with it usually. I want to see the price of the AC adapter by itself since so many docks don't come with it.
Alternatively since it's just a beefy charger in the old style, is there like a specific model's normal charger I could get instead? Maybe a P something of approximately the T580 era.
I want it for use with a T14, but afaict the T14 came with a USB-C charger so I can't use its model number to find what I need.

>whats good price for the camera?
The price of these good digishits are skyrocketing these days, literally being shilled as "film-like" by ecelebs. Mine was originally bought by my parents so I've always had it, ahead the trend :)
You can certainly find these cameras for $5 in flea markets, but there's nothing wrong with paying $80 to not have to go through that effort.
But if you pay that much make sure it's in good condition - the sensors do degrade. My camera has developed quite a few hot pixels (eg >>101702845) and just generally got noisier, but the double-exposure noise reduction system which kicks in at >1.3sec shutters does do a great job at creating absolutely pristine photos (while still keeping the lovely early 2000s digishit look).
