I can't stop thinking about everything being pointless

tech is very fun and that's the only sticking point

many corporations only make money because of other corporations. E.g. My company only exists because Facebook exists. And guess what! Humanity requires neither! We don't even need TVs, Marketing, 80% of the top websites in the world (amazon, Facebook, instagram).

We only need food, plumbing, shelter, healthcare, clothes, electricity, and beds. Everything else is non essential.

Follow the senior's example. Deadlines are all fake and gay. If something doesn't get done in time it is the manager's fault and the only reason there's pressure to finish things is so they look good. You gotta call them out on their shit or they'll continue to profit off of your stress.
>>
>>101913812
Neither of those are hobbies. I go to the gym because it keeps me sharp and doesn't make me ache all over after sitting 8 hours a day. Programming on your own time is a good career choice anyways (on top of it being fun), not sure why you're so opposed to it, unless you're a lifeless wagie.

nigga we've already got our next deadline queued up after this one, missing this wont accomplish anything long term. our pm has been on our side begging for more time and higher ups have strongly implied they'll fire him if we miss again. then he'll probably get replaced with a yes man who will make our lives even worse. if it was anyone else i'd assume they were sandbagging because they'd know i'd pick up the slack, but i think he's either depressed or having family issues or something. that or applying to other jobs, and good for him if he is but he's one of those "genuinely believes in the company mission" types so i kind of doubt it. idgaf about the company mission, just want to get this over with and move onto a better project

That same on call feeling is the vibe I am getting too from some of those online job descriptions.

I figured it would be cool to deploy environments and do script kiddie changes.

Instead, I build mostly frontend components for dumb literal bros.

You would think "Wow that's based" etc, but I realized most people I work with in the current company are bullies.

Maybe it's just the "where" I am working. However I have applied for stuff since February and get rejected, all, the, time.

I am mostly scared to do another dev job interview since I am awful at coding interviews. I am good at doing tasks, and modifying and learning from examples.

I should probably just aim to go back to technical support with a deeper coding focus or something. Idk, I have lost faith in myself.

I feel you.

I gotta be honest, the more I do dev work, I realize maybe I should go for an easier comfier related job that's adjacent to it.

I am not saying I am bad. However it has been a hell of a grind to grind through jobs for five years just to break in.

I think it's an age thing. I might be too old to keep up or some shit. Going to see a doctor for ADD meds as I think it's something I've ignored for years, and it's put a hamper on my relationship with my wife and my job at times. I hate pretending to be someone I am not most of the time at work since I can barely concentrate in an office setting twice a week.

It has taken the fun out of it for one. Two, the company I work for has an atrocious bro culture. I have never seen more inappropriate shit on a work based Slack. The shit we build is some shitty ATS for job recruitment that I could care less for.

Maybe I am too nice or too professional. I just want to do something potentially similar, somewhere else.

I just know that I am okay for frontend, and can barely do backend.

I regret not staying in technical support sometimes cause the team, pay, and benefits were great. Maybe grass is always greener.

I would have to stick with this dev shit for another 3 years to even maybe get $20k more since more and more of these fucking jobs want like 5 years of experience (and yeah I "apply anyway")

I am debating doing solutions engineer / developer advocate roles since the pay is better, usually remote, and isn't as 100% involved all day.

Been applying for shit since February and always get rejected. Closest I got was some in person dev job near me but to be fair I think I got rejected since I was too honest.

Pray for me Anons, I really want to find my purpose again.

Dumbass you are supposed to chart out what days or hours you want to work and set a limit for that. Say you wanted to work 5x10's you state that you would do that for only 3 weeks or 2 months. It has to be explicit and in email formatting. It makes his job easier since other people that are more broke then you will just take any extra hours or days while others will only take extra hours on certain days for whatever reason.

KEK out of all of the contracting companies it is the most bloated bureaucratic nightmare to work in. Bosses are mostly OK, coworkers are alright but the customers are shit to deal with and makes everything a pain.

I had shit constantly coming down from bosses way above and beyond my section asking for shit because not even my bosses knew what was going on for day to day operations.

I think like this only because I got nowhere at my old job (basically on call service desk support). It was supposed to be a 1 year contract, then hired on full time later to a different position. Despite having the best call times, one of the best records of first contact resolutions, and having a good rating from those that took the servay; when it came time to hire me they decided to instead just renew my contract with no raise. Left shortly after.

Most of us can easily create that, with sdl, in C, from scratch, in 30 minutes. Your accomplishments mean nothing. I see people who only write Jupyter Notebooks and claim to be "developers". Funny. Come talk to me when you start working on the systems level.

And attention women: React is not real programming. JavaScript frameworks in general are not real programming. 30 lines of python wrapping one library is not real programming. You have to get hired in a top level spot in order to have any leverage. When the company has an org chart it must be followed, so you only are allowed as much leverage as your boss has. 8 yoe "senior" (we don't do titles) here and my opinnion means nothing b/c the guy above me does nothing. Just look for new opportunities in a higher spot in the chart if you actually want to get things done.

>When the company has an org chart it must be followed,
This anon gets it. Been at my employer for 6+ years. When the company was young, title didn't matter. You could strongarm the CEO to do what you wanted if you were compelling. Then we got some dick head VP of Product who brought in finance/tech bro culture and people scrambled for titles to puff out their chest. The guy got fired 6 months in but the title culture got left behind. People with 2 to 3 years less time at my company weaseled their way into Director roles. Meanwhile I got fucked over and got stuck as an individual contributor. Despite being the guy who saved the company from lawsuits and bankruptcy multiple times, I'm now forever out of the loop and my opinions no longer matter unless someone with a big title comes to ME asking for it.

I'm paid alright but I have no upward mobility. I've survived 4 layoffs though and I'm the guy who is left to sit in the corner as long as shit works. It's WFH and I'm cranking $175k a year with only a $2k/mo mortgageto basically play video games and watch the company slowly eat itself from afar.
With how fucked the economy is I don't want to give it up.

I do sort of want to get a second job though. Even just a contracting gig.
Anyone have any recommendations? I do datalake infrastructure and backend web.

Bros I think I might be getting fired soon. I'm on contract and been here for 8 months but my progress feels very slow. The experienced guys I feel like are starting to treat me with disdain. The guy who sits in the cubicle next to me asks me if I need help with anything once a day but when I ask a question he gets visibly impatient.
The main guy I ask for help is the senior guy and he was helpful at first but now it's starting to feel like he's just done with me. He constantly makes sarcastic comments about stuff I'm trying to do and always sounds annoyed when I ask him things.
I'm trying but it's really not fair, our systems are completely fucked. We use like 20 different tools, they all have trouble communicating with each other, and furthermore our group is the nexus between like 5 other groups, so I have to be aware of who they are and their work and how it relates to us. It's a massive amount of stuff to get familiar with. And we have like 30 different tasks that we do and all of them require a lot of insight and by the time they walk me through one and I visit it again it's been like 3 months and I forgot everything. I feel retarded but I also feel like it's not completely my fault because this place is so disorganized and chaotic. I've been in a constant state of stress and worry about getting fired since I started.

ill posed question, what is the point of reading books on different languages? Just try to build something and learn the tools you need to use. Or look at career opportunities and learn what they search for in your area. Neither Java nor Python is anything special, they are the cookie cutter of languages. Also, just learning CS concepts would help you better.
That said, Effective Java is solid, it touches on concepts beyond just Java but still reads like an ELI5

Hopefully you didn't tell them your actual income. If so you failed from the start.

Always shoot 20-30k hirer then there high end of there range and they might bite but most often they will talk you down to the top of that range.

If you do not know how much that job is worth even with extensive googling then hit with either 2x or 3x your current pay. If its above 100k with what you make now then hit em with 100-200k and see what they will talk you down too.

I'm being put on a team with great developers. Somehow my mentor and some other coworkers have tricked themselves into thinking that I am a good developer. One of them unironically said I was the brightest junior he has worked with. On the new team I know I'll be given a big project to work on for half a year. I'll be solo, but of course I will be getting help when/if I ask for it. It's so unreal how cooked I am. I am genuinely just not very intelligent, and I can't solve complex stuff. If I somehow manage to complete the project, I will develop a God complex so big I can't even imagine. But that's fantasy, there's no way in hell this will go well. so company hired me to do x which is what I like to do and what my masters thesis was on,
so I do x , I finished the project pretty quickly and better than the competitor, have time between projects so I do y , i don't like doing y but I realize i have to be doing something before i can do x again, so do x again once another project is lined up , and then finish that and have to do y ,
as time goes on i do more y and almost no x, I'm kind of miserable.
then i find out through the grapevine for the project I am currently working on, they has previously contracted an x component that I did not know about to another company.
this just really rubbed me the wrong way. I know its not because I'm not good at doing x, in one of the x projects literally no other vendor was able to do what I did , and seemingly no other engineer has stepped up to do any portion of x.
I dunno I'm feeling like I was tricked into going into this company doing y when I wanted to do x.

legit question, what do "IT" people even do? i as a software engineer cannot fathom that people need help with shit like logging into something or setting up a printer via Samba or something.

is "IT" as a job market just predicted on ~90% of people being completely tech illiterate?

>>
>>101924814
You can apply that to anything tho.

>Is "Construction" as a job market just predicted on ~90% of people being completely clueless about building?

We are much more close to being a mechanic but instead of plugging in parts to guess the solution we instead implement solutions to solve the problem.

Some places are really chill with decent work schedules, other places you work shifts, and some places they work you to the bone.

You spend alot more time trying to figure out the solution then you actually do implementing it since you would rather not break it more in the process of fixing it. Most issues are easy to fix and your main skill set is learning more shit and a variety of it then you can specialize into a job like Networking , Server's, Cybersecurity where you get eyeball deep into content that still boils down to plugging in a few solutions to the problem but is mostly spent finding the perfect solution. Protip you cannot just restart a server/switch or a firewall when you have a problem, that is when you become specialized in the job.

Mostly we are the higher end of reading comprehension and problem solving. While CS grads are way better at math and problem solving then us, which is why you guys drop into our career and fly to the moon.

Also
Certifications teach more then college degrees do. College is better for management and job experience is king. Another thing you can do is work on homelabs with servers and other shit like GNS3 that you can put on your resume. If you want to be engineering level you need your masters, homelabs and tons of certs to get to that level and make real money starting 200k+

That being said, while you’ll enjoy Go more, I see more positions looking for Python experience. So make the decision based on what you want. I’ve got about 7 years experience as a software engineer and I’ve gone from a purely embedded C++ with C# .NET to DevOps role using python, golang, and bash. I prefer programming and golang has been the most “fun”. I learned a lot about cloud development from this new DevOps gay role, but I want to get back to programming so I’m actively looking elsewhere. It’s really up to you what you want to do and how much you are okay with using languages that suck (like python). Those choices will narrow your scope for potential jobs

Without getting into specifics, I was supposed to work on a project at work, and expected to put in extra (unpaid) hours, in order to train myself for an upcoming project.
Management sold us this as a great learning opportunity and motivational tool.
Not only I think this is a terrible idea for a team that is already burned out I also think that a proper training course would have been better because we've received pretty much zero guidance and assistance, and that this should have been done entirely on company time.
I'm pretty sure everyone else feels the same but they are just putting a happy face.
Now the thing is, I've done next to nothing and the deadline is a in a couple of weeks.
This was just the final nail in the coffin to kill any motivation I had left here, so I think I'm just gonna take the hit and keep getting my paycheck as long as it lasts and accept the very first offer I get that feels even remotely interesting.
Just venting, thanks for reading my blog.

Hey man, appreciate your feedback since you are doing what I kind of want to do.

Lemme know what you think:

I mess around with Linux and self hosting stuff on my personal computers at home so I am no stranger to deploying things.

To be honest, I find the deployment and environment side of things, including the pipeline usage etc to be pretty interesting.

Only thing holding me back from doing it at my actual job is a fat fuck who is way better at Typescript and .NET than me, and is the only deployment guy at work.

I mention this because he is a fuckbag bully on PRs, but has calmed down a bit over the last few months.

I've been out due to illness for the past few weeks, but honestly it's giving me a new perspective on things.

I've been applying to these sort of jobs m since I have two years software dev experience (Typescript, React, C#) as well as three years technical support experience, lemme know if you think I am wasting my time applying for these, but I think my ADD is getting worse with age so I think I should pivot now before I get found out that I am somewhat of a hack / ok dev at best:
- Developer Advocate
- DevOps Engineer
- Solutions Engineer
- Site Reliability Engineer
- Frontend Developer
- Software Engineer
- Cloud Engineer

It all depends on what other companies use for deployment. For me, everything is in AWS using Kubernetes, so it’s understanding cloud services, the Linux ecosystem and reading YAML. But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is if you will be able to figure your way through something. I had 0 experience with cloud anything nor python/golang experience before getting the job. I had a friend help put in a good word and also emphasized that even though I lack the experience they’re specifically looking for, I know my one capabilities will help me rise to the occasion. Don't quit. Milk it and stay there until you get on a PIP and then monkey branch off to another company. You got hired so you clearly know some things. Relax and just remember that every single coworker, every manager and boss you've ever had and ever will have is an enemy, so what they think matters very little versus what they do. >Get papers saying you have something (adhd, autism, whatever you have)
>Ask (demand) accommodations to employer

If they don't give you then you put a case against them, if they fire you then you can sue them and get $$$, any lawyer would do all the sue work pro-bono too (free of charge).

i felt like that for awhile but somehow still employed. redditors might call this "imposter syndrome" but in actuality its "sucking ass syndrome" and you should be working proportionally hard to how much you suck to try and catch up. if your coworkers are actually good u wont catch up but at least u will get better

You retard. Never do contract unless you know your shit.

I hope you learned your lesson to stick to full time gigs.

Contract shit is for 5 years+ exp most of the time. They don't expect you to learn. They expect you to do.
