I had bought a HDD for the first time in years for storage and completely forgot how noisy these are. For some reason I was thinking they only get loud when spinning up for writes.

Does anyone know if uBO still works on Edge or has it gone the same way as Chrome?
I've been thinking of switching browers from Firefox to something else, but the only other reasonable option seems like Brave. But if I'm gonna switch to chromium at least I think Edge would be a better option since it is already installed on windows.
>>
>>102059618
LTSC 2021 is based on Windows 10 so it doesn't have those hardware requirements.
Also, LTSC 2024 won't have those requirements either besides being based on windows 11.
So no reason to worry about that really. You're only choice will be either being on w10 or w11.
>>
>>102062163
You can just go to device manager (right click start menu icon) and select disk, properties and from driver tab 'disable device'. It's still on but no disk access and takes up minimal amount of electricity.
I do this for my backup drive. Then when you need to transfer files just enable it.

The ISO offered on massgrave will turn into the retail version when October rolls around. And no not really, 10 and 11 are quite similar overall. The same kinds of programs work on them, including shit like ShutUp10.

Ok, I finally figured out how to disable updates in Windows 10:

>Win Key + R
> Type: services.msc and hit ENTER
> Scroll down to Windows Updater, right click and disable
> Close window
>Win Key + R
> Type: regedit and hit ENTER
> Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SYSTEM then CurrentControlSet then Services then WassMedicSvc
> Right click Start and select Modify, change value from 3 to 4 and save
> Right click the already selected WaasMedicSvc from the drop-down menu on the left and and seleçt Permissions
> Change Full Control and Read to Deny and save

Make sure to click through and warnings or administrator pop ups trying to dissuade you and even after a restart you should see Windows update and the dressed Windows Update Medic Service as still disabled.

you should be using SSD for OS (especially win10) and SSDs don't need defrag

Before reinstall I usually make a copy of everything except C:\Windows directory so later on I can find whatever I need from previous installation.
As for browser I guess native import/export should work for most of the stuff, but I prefer old and reliable copy by hand

Intel and AMD both drastically improve performance on Windows 11 24H2.

Remember to keep your Windows up to date!

You're leaving up to a whopping 35% performance on the table by sticking with pre-24H2 versions of Windows.

Ouch!

Is Windows 11 any good now or is it still better to stay on 10?

As for MAS, I never said it was sketchy, just that I felt sketchy. But I think it's more just because I haven't done it before since I never felt the need.
I use MAS for Office anyway. I'll consider it if I move from 10 to 11, but from the sounds of it it's not worth doing. I thought there might be some benefits, kek

How do I become a Windows magician? It's somewhat easier on Linux given the plethora of high quality guides available, if you ever feel "inadequate" you can always do LFS and learn a ton of things along the way. You can't really do things like that on Windows.

Way too advanced and over 6k pages, I'm not willing to dig that deep just to learn a bit more about how the OS works, do cool difficult things and troubleshoot my own issues. I'm looking for a "instal gentoo" equivalent on Windows if that makes it easier to understand what I want.

To get Minecraft to run with my hostfile/simplewall working, or to allow it to make a connection only temporarily by knowing which addresses to unblock.

they could, but they'd be doing themselves a disservice by doing so
while they would prefer everyone who uses windows to pay for it, it does them no good preventing people who would not pay for it either way from using windows, as that has negative knock-on effects for them
consoles are a different story, they aren't used in business and they don't lead to trained users. their focus on security is more to make game developers happy. as an example i'm sure piracy had a significant role in the failure of the dreamcast, would you as a developer not be put off porting your game to a console that has such easily accessible means of not paying for you game?
you might say well the playstation could run copies with a swaptrick which was also very low cost, but that required a skill to perform, while self-booting modded dreamcast images could literally just be burned and played

not saying they absolutely won't do it, maybe they will, all i'm saying is that they'd be shooting their own foot and going against what they have outright said in the past if they did

Anons I have a few questions in regards to activation of my windows install:

1 - So I had followed the LTSC guide and used the medium option reg key for the disabling of services, and after using the MAS HWID activation option, I had checked the activation status in the control panel app where windows update is, and it says that windows 10 is activated, but the part below it is blank and does not look like a normal activation. Did I fuck up something or is this how MAS works? Similar to picrel I found but with windows 10 iot enterprise ltsc.

2 - If I had disabled too many services and it's fucking up my activation, which services must be required minimum to allow both proper activation and prevent unwanted drivers from installing?

I did some testing and set all of the group policy settings, all of the control panel app settings, all of the regular control panel settings, task scheduler settings and any other misc settings to disable telemetry and the driver downloads but left the services as they are. The result when connected to the internet is a genuine activation (meaning I won't need to use MAS HWID), but drivers still downloaded and installed themselves regardless of the plethora of settings I had tweaked. This confirms that the services do need to be tweaked, but I want to make sure I can get the genuine activation while preventing driver downloads so I can make a backup image with the genuine activation. Which services settings are responsible for the forced driver downloads despite both group policy and the system settings being tweaked to disable that? I will tweak the rest of the services after receiving all of the updates necessary, but I just want to make sure I get the genuine activation and windows updates but no driver downloads.
>>
>>102104551
The medium reg file has done something, as HWID activation should show that you activated with a digital license.
>>
>https://pastebin.com/hN8nnwns
is there nothing new (you) would add to this or remove?
it's going to be 2 years since this was made
>>
>>102104559
Hmm, interestinng. My goal here is to get the genuine activation via the windows update since MAS won't be needed for it, and get all of the basic security and bugfix updates, all without getting the automatic driver downloads. After I get all of the updates installed, I will then disconnect from the internet and tweak the services to what I need, then reboot into HBCD to make a backup image of the fully tweaked and properly activated OS image so that I can restore back to that if things get fucked up down the line. The backup image acts as sort of a stock quick load to restore everything to the basic working state and skip past the hours of tweaking every single setting. All I need to know is which services should I disable to stop the automatic driver downloads when updating? That's the only last thing blocking my path to fully get windows working on multiple PC's.

Going through those settings several times stresses me the fuck out and I end up just chilling out on my linux pc instead (the one I'm typing this post on). I just want to play my vidya again.
>>
>>102104559

>>
>>102105055
Interesting. I will test that right now and report back when I'm done, but I have a few last questions before I do so:

1 - For drivers, what do I replace the Intel Xeon Gaussian Mixture Model Driver with? I heard it's just some AI acceleration shit also being used used for voice stuff and I was using it because I don't know where to look for to find the original drivers as MSI doesn't provide the original drivers anymore for this PC from 2020, and now their site only provides a few modern bloated ones that I really would like to avoid, they are not the original drivers that were there during 2020. I would like to get the drivers that work best for this PC and not use the ones I got from windows update a while back in like 2021. My drivers are a mess and I absolutely need help finding better replacements for these drivers, but if stock is best, I need the originals and not the current ones at MSI. Nvidia's the only one that's not from MSI or windows update as far as I am aware.

2 - My PC has an Nvidia RTX2060 ITX Aero since it is a console-sized PC from MSI, my current driver version I use is a debloated 472.84 studio driver processed with NvSlimmer, and I use this because I don't want to have to use the UWP bloat app. Should I update the driver or should I stay with what I have? Is there a way to try out a newer debloated studio driver and restore the old Nvidia control panel or will I be forced to use the UWP bloat? I use the studio driver because they are basically the same as game ready drivers except only released as stable versions whereas the game ready drivers are released constantly and end up with bugs.

1 - Should I continue to use ventoy, or is it better to use rufus? I have been using ventoy, but I would like a second opinion incase there may be problems with ventoy I do not know about, I think I have ventoy 1.0.97 on my USB, but still would like to know what's best for a windows install.
>>
>>102105540
>1
There's a tool called Snappy Driver Installer Origin that you can use to install drivers automatically. It downloads an index file, matches them against your PC parts and gets them ready to install.

I'd recommend removing the driver with DDU in safe mode and using NVCleanstall to re-install the driver which you can remove the telemetry of and shit.

Either works. I've been using a 1.0.96 Ventoy to install shit like LTSC on multiple computers, but Rufus also works fine.

I have noticed significant performance improvements using administrator but its not consistent across computers at all. For example I've been playing Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 recently. I have two laptops running Windows 11 IoT LTSC, one with a 12th gen i5 and a 3050 and the other with a 13th gen i5 and a 4050, both Acer. On the 3050 laptop, the games run fine and administrator does pretty much nothing. On the other laptop, the game just drops frames constantly and is a stuttering mess but if I run in administrator it fixes all the issues then runs properly as it should and the average FPS increases substantially. No idea why or why its only on the 4050 machine.

Alright, what about Power Saver?
>>
>>102107325
I'd say Power Saver is mainly for laptops and shouldn't be used all the time because everything must be undervolted to use less battery.
>>
>>102107374
I already undervolted my CPU and GPU. I'm using a PC if it weren't clear. I'm just curious if a Power Plan on W11 can lower my electricity bill by any significant degree.

I'd say no, not really.

those benchmarks are from 23H2, completely irrelevant to the conversation now

>Up to 35% Performance Improvement
Windows 10 was never 35% better than Windows 11, even at launch.
It's over, Windows 11 won.

the a mount of saving is not good enought to the amount of fiddling you have to do.

unless your 400w+ idle can go below 100w is not worth the effort.

We're getting closer and closer to IoT LTSC 2024's retail release so I expect more and more people (mostly the ones too skittish to use the open preview) will start to default to it instead of 2021.

burning windows 7 iso.
man. this shit run so well in old machines.
>>
Is there am issue with having both W10 and W11 on a single boot drive when I am installing W10 on a new PC?
>>
>>102109381
I'd advise you to just buy another drive, it's useful anyway and imo it's better to have an operating system on the entire drive
>>
would it be wise to try 11 on an unsupported CPU? i7 4th to be precise, I hear that old af cpus are starting to be unusable now so I fear that the same is going to happen to these, even if they can run it well
