W11 IoT LTSC or wait for W12 IoT LTSC?
>>
>>102002509
Well you don't need to use 11 and can just use 10 if you want, but the e-cores will be used like p-cores so some things might rarely chug. Also if it was a 13th or 14th gen there's like a 25% chance that it'll just stop working because Intel are cool and based.
>>
>>102003029
You'd be waiting a good number of years if you wanted to wait for 12 IoT LTSC (if that'll be a thing), like a *real* long time, so just use 11 IoT LTSC instead. Either get the open preview ISO from massgrave or wait till early/mid October for the retail release ISO to come out.

Is Windows 12 even a real thing? How did we go from "Windows 10 is the last one" to "Windows 11 practically just came out, Windows 12 coming soon?"
>>
>>102005061
What looked to have might've been a very early prototype for Windows 12 was shown at an Ignite event late last year. Also how 24H2 was originally talked about like it was going to be Windows 12 with how "different" it was.
But yeah the whole deal with "10 being the last Windows" was naturally hogwash.

You might as well just put your passwords in a plain text file and encrypt it in a password-protected 7zip archive. KeepassXC is basically the best local manager.

I have a 5800x3d so I had to get windows 11 enterprise edition. Should I change to the IoT LTSC version?

The base Enterprise edition is fine. You can do all the usual stuff to it to make it behave.
>>
>>102009459
I used to use the IoT LTSC version of windows 10 and loved it though, would the windows 11 version of it be similar?
>>
>>102009468
Yeah, IoT LTSC 2024 is very similar to 2021 just with an 11 base. If you want to swap already you can use the open preview ISO offered by massgrave to install it. Or you could wait until early/mid October for the full retail release.
>>
Anyone on IoT LTSC 2024 can confirm if Windows Sandbox works now? It's a pretty useful feature for me.
>>
>>102009491
Will I run into any problems if I install the leaked version?
>>
>>102009717
You shouldn't. The open preview is still part of the normal 11 24H2 line and not the closed insider preview line like another leaked LTSC 2024 ISO was so technically when the October update rolls around it should basically just become the retail release.

the clock is ticking, that's the biggest reason. just because that version of 10 will be supported until 2032 that doesn't mean most software developers will maintain their apps for w10 that long. they will start pulling the plug very soon after normal 10 goes out of support

Any alternatives to this shady as fuck program?
I was checking it out, and sure it works, but after reading through the github page, I saw some interesting things.

For instance, this

https://github.com/sandboxie-plus/Sandboxie/discussions/2892

So if by mistake you select Business during installation, you'll get locked out and have to buy a license (or ask for support to get a 3 day license that allows you to change the setting).

Now, what the fuck does it install on Windows that locks you out of selecting Personal or Business? A Certificate?

I checked everywhere on my system, files, registry, certificates, but I cannot find anything.

At this point I just want to get rid of it entirely and whatever shit it did to my windows install.

I wanted to download 40 videos from a website, but it prevents their download, so I decided to record them. They use the web player https://info.jwplayer.com/learn-more?e=6
One other prevention by the player is a pop-up with the name of my account appearing at random times and which pauses the video until i click ''continue''. I just play the videos on an external monitor and as soon as i see the pop-up i click continue.
It's tedious to record that but I still managed to do it.

My problem is that I didn't see the pop-up was nominative, and I prefer to have clean videos without any authentication.

So I seek a video editor which displays tiny miniatures chronologically. so that in the miniatures I can see when there's a pop-up and I just go to the frames and delete them.

I wanted to use portable free software, so I downloaded OpenShotPortable, ShotcutPortable, LosslessCutPortable, AvidemuxPortable but they don't have miniatures.

I there a free software like in picture which display the timeline of the video?
>>
>>102022531
it took me a while to realise you meant thumbnails with "miniatures"
why not post the site in question? there's almost certainly a way to download the original videos instead of clearning up screen recordings

Things I've tried that didn't work.:

Different router/modem ports

I like scoop. I try to avoid winget because it's not an actual package manager, it's just an installer manager. All it does is literally download the installer of the software you're trying to install and then runs it. You even get the UAC popup and all. Scoop installs everything to the scoop directory in the user directory and it's pretty clean. It also tries to use a portable version for most softwares if there is one, as far as I know. Never used chocolatey that much but I don't like it from the looks of it.

Could someone explain to me in simple-ish terms why some software requires a min. Windows version? For example, I was trying to do something on WSL1 but it required me to enable Systemd at boot but this feature isn't available until version 1.0.0 which REQUIRES (nags and doesn't install) versions 19xx and above.
My old laptop has a shitty celeron on it, it flies on LTSB (2016) and starts to struggle quite a bit when I move it to LTSC(2021), are those requirements absolutely necessary or are there ways to "backport" the necessary features?

windows 10 is multiple versions of the windows kernel using the same brand (windows 11 is actually still part of that family, just using a different brand) because windows uses a rolling release model
the changes in question require kernel changes, backporting them would essentially entail updating at least part of the OS to the newer version
especially WSL related stuff, which is kernel related and a little bit of COM
and the official WSL systemd support requires WSL2 which is based on the simplified interface to Hyper-V which requires at least the windows 2018 update

i don't know if i'm remembering right but iirc there were unofficial options, hacks, and workarounds for wsl1 though
could check MSYS2/cygwin to see if whatever you want to do is supported there

or just install linux somewhere
even if it's just on like a live usb
or use an android, you can get most shit done without root in termux

This is a really stupid OCD thing, but I tried to make a new "Games" Library, and when I change the icon, it removes the little base / underline thing that the default library icons get.
If you create a new Library, it gives it a generic folder icon WITH the base, but changing that icon to anything else removes the base.

Am I missing something here? Is there a special icon library or something?
I just want it to match.

Is Windows 11 LTSC stable enough for production/daily use?
I'm currently W11 Pro, and I like it so far. But I don't want Copilot and all the Microsoft bloatware on my system running 24/7. I just want to build a stable machine for work/casual gaming, without the fear of breaking when it updates.

I would, but I don't trust software developers to maintain support once Windows 10's EOL support comes. (Specially for the games/software I'm using for work)
>>
>>102033056
It is more stable than Home/Pro since it's aimed at critical devices and applications, it (should) get feature updates every few years so it doesn't break anything, that's the point of LTSC

However only the leaked ISO is available, and official support for 11 LTSC comes on october so you might as well hold on for a bit more

Is it completely free? Even when reusing 2nd hand parts? It's been over 10 years since I built a PC and iirc you registered you're built PC to your Microsoft account? Or you at least had a product key or something? I really can't remember lol
>>
>>102040386
Windows 10 and 11 can be installed without needing to use a product key, as the ISOs are easily downloaded off the MS website free of charge. You can use Windows without getting a license for about a month before it starts to get really naggy about it, but in this case we have MAS, which is an activation script that can activate Windows in three different ways (with the most recommended being HWID.)
When it comes to installing Windows, it's always recommended to run the shift+f10 command prompt within the setup to fully wipe the disk you're about to install to using diskpart via the clean command.
>>
>>102040427
>You can use Windows without getting a license for about a month before it starts to get really naggy about it,

Wait, what happens with it after? So it's not really free?
>>
>>102040457
It just gets naggy like I said. You can still use it fine, but there's a watermark on the screen that's always there and you can't customize the system at all.
But like I said, you can just activate it with MAS.

USB 3.0 is just one thing, there are lots of things that no longer get W7 support.
NVMe needs to be patched in as well, chipset drivers are unavailable, you need to check if you motherboard's network chip is something old like the Intel I219-V otherwise it won't have support either, things like SATA and audio drivers aren't available either, AMD and Nvidia's GPU's no longer support it, CPU's with asymmetrical cores don't even function correctly on W10 so you can image what it would be like on W7 and so on.
And that's only the hardware side of things, on the software side it's just as bad. GUI scaling on W7 barely works so you can't use a high PPI screen, modern software like Elden Ring or the latest versions of Photoshop won't run on it either, no DX12 support, Chrome no longer supports it, Firefox and Thunderbird only support it in their long term service branches, basically anything that connects to the internet will eventually stop getting updates and then it's a tossup to see if it'll keep working.

Basically running W7 now is much like running Linux, where you have to get used to the idea that you'll forever have to be jumping through hoops to keep everything working and even then, you just won't be able to do everything that you want with it.
For instance, there is a patch that lets you run Elden Ring on 7, but that's just one game. You'll have to get used to the idea that you must wait for someone to make a patch for every bit of software that you want to use just so you can run it, whereas a W10 user just clicks install and runs it.
Unless you intentionally run a legacy system with old hardware and old software only, it's just not worth the effort, and that's coming from someone who has been using W7 since release and still uses it today.

1. Open image with JPEGView
2. Right click
3. Settings/Admin
4. Edit user settings
5. Ctrl+F find"ShowFullScreen"
6. Set ShowFullScreen=false
7. Find "DefaultWindowRect"
8. Set DefaultWinowRect=max

you have issues with settings somewhere, I've yet to experience the same thing in W10iotltsc
>>
Every time I view pics or browse a folder timestamp metadata is written to and the $Mft file writes go up continuously.
Is there a way to prevent metadata writes on every file access, and disable $LogFile writes?
Also how many GB does your PC write per day?
>>
>>102027808
W10iotltsc will want UEFI, which W7 is incompatible with. Just run W7 on a separate machine.
Why is your OS dying anyway? Are you using bizarro hacks and bullshit? Ever run chkdsk/dism/sfc scans? Registry bloat?

never heard of this, I might believe it if I ever see it

>>102044718
I just use Windows 11 and Ubuntu and they Just Work on My Machines (TM)
Excellent operating systems.

>>102044757
pretty hard to go strictly portable, only certain programs can be had that way, and yes, it is a good thing in order to reduce registry bloat
>>
>>102050356
there actually is an option to not be updating file metadata, I once saw this somewhere. Web search "windows disable updating file access time" or something like that.

You don't have to worry about Windpows eating too quickly through your drive's TBW, unless you are on lowest-cost junk or an antiquated early SSD with much lower TBW than modern drives.
>>
>>102044757
You can do that via installing all your programs through Scoop. It's very doable.
>>
>>102044981
A workaround? Ventoy doesn't need anything special to load Windows ISOs. My GPT/exFAT one installs Windows fine.
>>
>>102044718
>>install windows 11

>>
>>102050499
I looked it up on the internat and can confirm that the following command disables the constant "last access" metadata writes:
>fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1
This should boost performance and reduce SSD wear.
But what about $LogFile? Which setting disables the NTFS logging/journaling?

>But what about $LogFile? Which setting disables the NTFS logging/journaling?
Lol, you really don't want to do that if you don't want ReactOS tier stability. ReactOS is unusable precisely because their OS FS drivers can't do Logging/Journaling.

I tried to install Win 11 IoT LTSC on my laptop but couldn't get past the first step since it couldn't detect my SSD. Anyone know what the problem could be? Sort of new to Windows (currently on Linux)
>>
>>102052885
Are you using an Intel CPU? You most likely need the Intel rapid storage drivers loaded in the setup. Either extracted from the setup file from Intel's website or from your laptop's OEM support page for your model, placed on your boot USB root to load when needed. The driver files appear as .sys files.

whats a good download manager?
>>
>>102054723
JDownloader2 is the best one IMO, though it comes installed a bit bloated. Though there's rentry guides like this one that tell you what advanced settings to disable to clean it up.

I honestly have to wonder why they think that's a good idea in any way. Like what is their reasoning behind removing an incredibly solid settings menu besides wanting more people to use Settings for whatever reason.
>>
>the Control Panel still exists for compatibility reasons and to provide access to some settings that have not yet migrated
>that have not yet migrated
So everything that we still need the control panel for will eventually be moved to Settings. They're not just going to remove advanced settings for Sounds, Power Management, etc., without putting a replacement in the Settings menu. So I guess I fail to see the problem.

I have installed Windows 10 LTSC IoT on my secondary laptop from 2014 and it works great. I might install it on my main machine as well. my only complain is the photo viewer even after enabling it in the registry being kinda primitive. Other than that, no complains at all

back 3 days later and I tried Mint liveUSB boot repair and it says:
"The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would restore the [(generic mbr)] MBR in /dev/sda, and make it boot on sda2.

they introduced the new settings uwp app in windows 8, which i'll remind you came out 12 years ago. you really think they're going to make Settings do everything Control Panel did?
>>
>>102059225
No, I think they're going to leave the Control Panel in Windows for the foreseeable future, despite what that article claims, and despite that line on their website. I'm just saying that whatever happens, they're not taking needed configuration tools away from us.
>>
>>102059297
they can't really do it, not outside something like putting a section in Settings for Control Panel applets, because of backwards compatibility. that is, programs used to put their own applets in Control Panel, so to keep compatibility there needs to be a way to access those
