Is it possible to remove the battery from a smartphone (and old Android) and run it purely from USB power?

Or do they design phones to NEED a battery no matter what?

Anybody here have experience with openbsd and mednafen? The video is slow and the sound is "glitchy". Both sound.device and sound.driver is set to default in mednafen.cfg, but I have tried a lot of different things, but nothing seems to work.

Maybe someone with a working mednafen can share their mednafen.cfg

If you're asking if you could solder some wires to the phone where the battery would go, then I think so. From my search results, phone batteries seem to be 3.8 volts output so you would need to step the voltage down from the 5 volt usb input.
It's easier just to keep the phone plugged in however

They're higher voltage. mAh measures the milliamps per hour, and doesn't include the voltage. You can calculate the mWh (milliwatt hours) of the battery pretty easily by multiplying the mAh with the voltage. From the looks of things, phone batteries are usually 3.6 ~ 3.8 volts while laptop batteries are around 10 volts or more.

probably cant do that until you literally make all the contents of the three dirves be able to be under one folder in the filesystem?

>From my search results, phone batteries seem to be 3.8 volts
Bruhh. Lithium ion cells are "0%" at 2.5 - 3 and "100%" at 4.1 - 4.2. When you charge one to the absolute fullest it's at 4.199999 and fairly quickly drops to 4.1.
All of that is summed as
>3.7V nominal
which you see printed on the cells. Do multiplications and you get those numbers written on power tools and whatnot. For example 11 cells in series gets you a "40 volt" pack. (always worry if someone calls a lithium ion pack "12 volt battery")

it is possible, just make sure the USB power feeds enough power (i.e. plug it in with its own adapter directly to the outlet and not just off your computer). You don't have to solder anything like the other anon says

Can cleaning a laptop make it faster? Now I know what you're thinking "what kind of question is that you fucking nigger of course it can do you know what board you're on". But lets say the laptop wasn't explicitly (as per HWiNFo) throttling, it was just warm close to the tmax temperature. But wasn't throttling. The entire motherboard was pretty warm tho, maybe cooler components affect performance?

It feels faster as in a 'low latency' kind of feeling, audio doesn't skip or crack anymore for example, it seems to handle large tab sessions better. Etc.

Could "static buildup" or something like that have anything to do?

Not sure how relevant this project is in the current year but I've been using it on systems that don't necessarily require newest of the new software. Except the kernel as I always do my own ones per-PC.

And then the wildcard option:
>Arch Linux
Everyone likes to shit on it especially when offering it for a server. But it just works. In fact every Linux system out there works better when there's less stuff installed. Less features -> less bugs.
>>
More of a /mu/ question but that board sucks a lot so I'm asking it here (it's done via technology anyway)

What are some alternatives to the 24/7 lofigirl-esque youtube channels or other platforms that have some kinds of music collections? I just want a constant stream of background music, stuff like drum n bass, paino, atmospheric, whatever
>but mindless music is bad
I literally need it to filter out my noisy environment.
My problem with spotify/apple music is that they cost money AND (at least spotify for sure) has those huge ginormous playlists filled with a lot of AI slop music
My problem with youtube mixes or big compilation videos is that they basically all have the same songs in every video, just rearranged in a different order. I wouldn't be surprised if some people run a script to download someone else's video, separate all the songs and then just shuffle them and upload it. Maybe add rain sfx if they're feeling up to it

>>102165523
I'll start by assuming both of the networks use IPv4 and that you use the correct IP in question when trying to "transfer files":
>yes
And assuming your actual home net (the one on the switch) uses something like 192.168.1.0/24, pick another - preferably obscure - subnetting such as 10.7.8.0/24 for the direct line.
Or don't use IPv4 for the direct line but use IPv6 link locals.

>>102165938
You get ID'd all the same but as vpn-user-1234.blah.vnp-service instead of broadband-user-1234.blah.isp.
>>
>>102165938
Not same anon, but basically when you use a particular vpn IP for too long you start associating that IP with 'you'

Example, you are normal and go about your normal self (no vpn; just ISP ip). You go shopping, pump gas, hang out with friends, etc. All good-ish. Now you go out in all black, hang out with a different group of friends, different gas station, etc. Eventually that second life becomes as real as the first one.

Same with the ISP IP vs VPN IP. Eventually you start leaving different/similar breadcrumbs on the vpn IP. Granted, you'd have to use the exact IP each time you logged into each site, but you get the idea.

Personally, I don't subscribe to that threat model (ISP IP == vpn IP so it's pointless). For me at least, its about ensuring the ISP doesn't discriminate traffic (censorship) and at least the vpn provider can be switched.

I'm a Bong who has 4 things with foreign plugs
>a laptop with a German (Schuko) plug
>a RasPi with a power supply with a German (2-pin) plug
>a USB charger with a German (2-pin) plug
>a USB charger with a USA (2-pin) plug
I'm currently using them with travel adaptors.

Why does official guidance say that travel adaptors should only be used for short term temporary situations (like holidays) and are unsafe for long term usage? Am I risking fire?

Also one of the German 2-pin plugs I have into a 2-pin adaptor, but the other I have into a Schuko adapter. And I just realised that because the plug is so thin, the ground pins of the adaptor are exposed. I know nothing about electronics. Is that dangerous? Could I be electrocuted if I touched them? Or does electricity only come out of the live?

>>
>>102171578
There's two issues with travel adapters:
- They create a mechanically and electrically weaker connection and should be avoided for high power appliances - a poor connection is more likely to overheat and cause fire.
- They're made to very weak standards by shitty chinese companies which exacerbates the 1st issue.
- Voltages and frequencies in different countries aren't compatible with all appliances. The UK and EU use the same 230v/50hz. The USA uses 110v though, which makes a UK <-> USA adapter dodgy as hell.

The exposed ground should not be a problem, it's there as a protection in case of fault, it would be no different to touching a metal chassis of a fridge.

USB chargers are a commodity and laptop cables are usually interchangable, so why not just replace them?

It's both, the issue with Discord is that it cannot run in the background of other apps. However, if my phone screen closes I can no longer remain in a Voice Chat. And it's not just my issue, others have also talked about it. It's a Samsung new feature that disallows microphone use by background apps.

it's not 4chan being mad that you have a vpn on, the problem is it detected that you are making too many requests and it's politely telling you to chill out
either you or someone on your network made too many requests in a short amount of time, if you get that error you just have to wait a bit

i'm not too sure on how the vpn works, it could be the cause of the error if your vpn provider has many people using 4chan with them and they route everything on the same ip, meaning 4chan sees the same ip making hundreds of requests, but you'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable on this matter to reply to be sure

Proton is installed separate from Steam.
Steam downloads and installs Proton automatically when you try to launch a game on Linux.
So the answer to

is yes.
>>
>>102172491
Steam (Runtime) is basically just Steam with no changes, you can enable Proton in settings, but that's not mandatory. binary bloat? Slow compile times? Templates are great though.

The way many templated libraries deal with it is through type erasure. For example, the very popular library {fmt} (which is what std::print and std::format is based on): https://vitaut.net/posts/2024/binary-size/. it depends on the usecase.

I've left a few people on seen since a few days ago because they keep asking me to fix their computer, install windows, or recommend them laptops and components and I'm fucking tired of it. And every time a normalfag asks me something it's like they just seek validation and don't actually care at all about my answer. I've given them price/performance breakthroughs and they just go "tldr, what do you think about <chink shit from ebay or aliexpress>"

How trustworthy is this VPN service?

cryptostorm.is/

Main use case for me will be pirating capeshit media, animu, and forcing my phone to stay locked to one IP (frequent phone poster) when traveling. I don't like having to re-auth every 5 minutes while on a road trip.

I heard they got rid of port forwarding a while back and that pissed a lot of people off. Apparently that was supposed to fuck with torrenting but I've had no issues torrenting with Mullvad. Speeds are still consistent. No speed or a liability change as far as I can see after the port forwarding kill announcement. Why was them getting rid of that a bad thing?
>>
>>102179093
port forwarding allows peering to work better.
Basically the way peer-to-peer works is that one of you needs to have a publicly visible address. This is your external IP.
port forwarding allows your router to lock a port so that it points to your specific computer (as opposed to anything else on the network).

When you can't port forward, you are essentially invisible to the swarm until you connect to another visible peer.

There are ways around this, called NAT traversal, but they are not a part of the Bittorrent protocol.

Does anyone have any tips on how to trouble shoot and find the cause of this?

i have this strange problem with firefox that happens when i run ComfyUI but also Google Sheets, where after using it for some time the UI will get stuck and start flashing back and forth if you try to move it around or change anything. simply refreshing the page will not solve it, and i have to close the tab and open a new one for it to go away. i can also change the window size and it will work for a while before going back to the same shit.

I believe this was either caused when i updated firefox to 128 or it could also be because of some about:config thing i changed.

I've tried disabling all my addons and running the site in a private windows without any cookies with no luck.
>>
>>102179123
by the way, this becomes a severe issue if both peers are for example, mobile devices.
Mobile ISPs use something called CGNAT which essentially means that you will never have a permanent IP address, and therefore two mobile peers will never be able to find each other without some intervention (like another server acting as a proxy aka NAT traversal)
>>
>>102179032
I've been using them for like 5 years. No real complaints other than it's a real small operation and odd things may break for a while. Nothing serious though.

I'm a mullvad dude at the moment but as I said, I pretty much only use it for torrenting or locking down my phone's IP. Are there any advantages for me switching from them to cryptostorm? Mullvad got rid of port forwarding a while back and apparently that was supposed to fuck with Torrington specifically (no I haven't really noticed any major differences but I typically don't heavily monitor the torrent processes). Does anyone have an explanation as to why a VPN service not having port forwarding is so bad?

>>102179221
Both because you build peer lists faster and establish connections faster. It allows peers to connect to you directly without using a shared intermediary to do NAT busting, which is fiddly and works slightly different for every protocol.
>>
>>102179209
Be aware you have to manage your own networking with cryptostorm. They don't provide any 'client' software to do the configuration for you. If you want that you're back to /r/vpn flavor of the week like AirVPN or whatever.

if you literally can't connect to a peer, then you can't benefit from it's upload and it can't benefit from your download, so it directly affects speed.
In practice, as you've noticed, enough of us are home internet users, have decent VPNs, or have seedboxes, so it's not a massive issue.

It just makes P2P impractical for general purpose applications.
There are new projects geared towards tackling that challenge. One is Veilid.

What pocket do you put your phone in?
Assuming right-handed.

I'm right handed but I've always put my phone in my left pocket. The right pocket holds my slim wallet, keys, and wireless earbuds.
I always did this because I used to wear jeans more often, and I was able to fit my wireless earbud case in that tiny pocket in the right pocket, pic related.
Lately I've noticed more and more that it's fucking me over whenever I'm carrying something. I gotta reach my right hand over into my left pocket, because I use my right fingers for the fingerprint sensor.

I don't know if I'm ready to re-learn years of muscle memory.

>>

I change it every few years.
I think 2 is too short, will be annoying for muscle memory.
So at least 3, might do 5 next.

Why?
It has been said that:
The radiation from it, although low power, chronically, can damage your bone density. Some health guru, I can't remember which one, I went through a whole binge of them 201-2017, but I remember one of them saying this, that he got his measured and the leg on the side where he had always kept his phone had 10% lower bone density than the other leg.

So I wanna at least even out the damage, lest become massively disbalance.

MSI has over the last few years repeatedly been involved in either anti consumer practices or generally undesirable treatment of their customers. During the TSMC shortage which created a video card shortage, they openly hiked their prices up well above msrp even after nvidia told them not to, and were colluding with other AIBs to do the same. Even after the shortage was resolved they kept their prices sky high as long as they could to imply scarcity.
They were known to refuse RMA’s on a lot of defective coolers and cards in the 2000/3000 nvidia series, and were one a few AIBs who would charge repair estimates that cost more than the msrp of a new card in order to get people to just buy a new card.

There were similar practices with their laptops and other hardware. They just showed themselves real quick when they had the upper hand in the market, they would and did abuse the hell out of it.
They’re a business, they’re expected to look for opportunities for profit, but what they did was basically them looking at profit with zero concern on their image or longevity. Something like that happening speaks about how the company is viewed from within, they have no value in their own reputation.

Hey /g/, I recently bought a 50" Phillips smart TV. It has this cool screen mirroring feature which lets you extend your computer screen. I was curious how it worked so I captured some network traffic with Wireshark.

After a little reading, I learnt that SSDP is used for discovery, and HTTP is used for fetching the UPnP description. Later, my laptop creates a virtual network adapter, and somehow the TV knows to connect to it, request an address via DHCP, and start a RTSP session.

I still don't understand why the TV does all this, there seems to be a missing step between fetching the UPnP XML and the RTSP setup. What do you think is happening?

I also noticed some other weird behaviour by the TV. It keeps sending and answering its own MDNS requests. I think it's trying to inject these records into the cache of whatever is listening to the broadcast as a kind of advertisement.

It depends on what you want to back up. First off, you need a subscription in order to ensure your repositories are not public, if that is important. But, more importantly, GitHub is really only for git repositories, not any old data. So, if you want to back up old school coding projects, GitHub is perfect. But if you want to back up lots of PDFs or photos or whatever, you *can* do it, but GitHub will yell at you.

>store it as encrypted blobs.
Sure, but then you are once again not using GitHub the way it is designed and built for. You should not store blobs on GitHub, it's really not meant for it. I even get warnings when I upload new versions of assets for my apps.

Most free storage is around 5-15GB. Github doesn't set a clear limit. I'm just wondering how far I could push it without getting my stuff deleted.

those repacks often take a long time to compress, the only reason it's worth it for them is because that data is being downloaded many times, and any amount of data saved is multiplied by how many people download it
for your personal backups, however, all it will mainly do is make backing up take ages, in exchange for saving a little extra space over fast compression
also, for most people, the largest files they have are media. music, pictures, and videos which don't compress at all because they already are compressed
basically, it's not really worth using compression much if any slower than the transfer rate to the backup drive
