>/g/ makes a 13th album
Theme: Music for your god. (divine music, your interpretation)
Deadline: Midnight between September 30th and October 1st (UTC)
Please post title suggestions

>IMPORTANT! READ THIS BEFORE SUBMITTING:
Upload the file somewhere and post the link here. If you want to update your track, make a new post.
If possible use a lossless format and upload to a file-sharing service, not to a music site like Vocaroo or SoundCloud.
Include the title of the song in the post. Don't rely on us reading it from the filename or tags.
When you post the submission make sure that the song is clearly a submission for the album, otherwise it might get skipped.
Songs that contain anything against YouTube's policies won't be uploaded on YT (but will still be added to the album).
If your track's volume goes above 0 dB it will be clipped for the release.

It's crazy how much worse tutorials have gotten since then. That and dubspot taught me ableton, nowadays you got shit like this lady sucking ghost dick clogging up your search feed

Sorting shit from not shit tutorials has always been a slog, but t b h I blame youtube more than the people making them.
Not only do they *certain* behavior, but the search function is practically useless now so you can't get past those types of videos anyway unless you have a certain channel you're looking for already.

Is it actually extended to October? When did the album organizer say that?

>>
>>102220682
The thread's been quite dead for the whole summer, so Anons are popping in and out, and the extra time allows those who started late, as well as those who want to post more than one submission, to make and finish their tracks.
Now I think there are 13 submissions, which isn't too bad, but before the previous thread there were only 5 (2 of which I'm not even sure), and multiple Anons asked for extensions (one submission is even called "Extension Please" lol), so I went with the standard extra month to be sure.
A bit too much time is way better than even slightly too little IMO.

>>102212363
i don't like every example but to dismiss the technology as a whole is bs. to me it sounds extremely high fidelity yet capable of making rich and complex sounds like serum. for example carly rae jepsen - call me maybe has robotic synth strings and it sounds amazing, there's no issue about it being uncanny. for example a live performance of darude - sandstorm would be seen as gimmicky, people wouldn't want to change a thing about the original track with its artificial sounds. why don't you post FM patches that supposedly sound great even though you admit DX7 presets are cringe?

halp it's too HARD
>>
>>102226947
find someone playing it on youtube or take it measure by measure the hard way. what is it?

looping a bar over and over with my instrument and placing midi is the brute force way i sometimes have to resort to
>>
>>102227027
It's not actually that hard mostly (the 303 parts actually might make me cry though) it's just tedious and the drifting out of tune is fucking me up lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-meA0k59Rk

my obsession has waned over the past 6 months but that one remains an enduring influence that i mentally refer back to frequently so... it just makes sense to do break it down
>>
>>102227152
yeah, i can see tune drifting being annoying.
there are some cool parts in that but definitely would just try to figure out the parts i thought were cool instead of doing the whole or most of it. getting the sound design half-right along with the notes is a bit of a wrinkle but doesn't sound too hard.

transcribing is definitely a muscle you have to work on, would maybe say start with easier songs and work up to that (and find inspiration along the way from figuring out other things). it's hard to work up the motivation to do one song but once i'm rolling it's easy to do a handful of things i want to transcribe to keep me busy for a few weeks/months
>>
>>102227207
l0l i'm a ways in and it's pretty manageable so far but for sure it takes practice.
There have been plenty of songs where i've had to settle on just doing chunks instead of full on remakes but... the wind cries: "do it you little autist... don't be lazy..."

... idk, the whole thing needs doing.
I feel like part of things i've been slacking on, or not appropriately increasing the difficulty of as I progress rather, is not taking remakes more seriously.
Maybe,...,,, ones mind wanders too far in the night... i get too optimistic sometimes..,,
>>
>>102227207
what i find with such faggots over the decades is that they don't want to learn how to transcribe things. if they can't download midi files of it then it's too hard. if a youtuber hasn't give them a step-by-step guide then they reach the point of being suicidal.

>>
>>102227996
>I think he was asking for midi packs I was like bruh
it's kinda sad. i've seen a lot of this shit over the years. some people are lazy. some people just have no talent whatsoever. they want to take shortcuts and pray to god they're not exposed as a complete fraud. i was talking to my friends a few weeks ago about a DJ we knew. tries to pass himself off as a composer and friend reminded me of how he did this community radio show playing his music. it wasn't his music. he took credit for a bunch of video game soundtracks from snes, gameboy and some other platforms that he didn't write and tried to pass them off as his own. there's many fake it until you make it or exposed as a fraud people in music world.

>>102241790
IEMs can indeed help you hear things more in detail, but they're much worse than monitors at other things, such as balancing things with each other, hearing transients like you'd hear them on a speaker, and panning (since IEMs and headphones are strictly binaural, although there's software to mitigate that).

To the anon who wanted to recreate this waveform in operator, I got it by total chance after watching an Airwindows video. He said he was using u law to encode and decode I don't remember which plugin. I tried wave shaping sines with u law and its inverse function and the inverse function gave the waveform. It's just a like a square wave with fewer partials. It aliases at far higher frequencies while retaining the square character. I wonder what Chris uses these functions for but not to the point of diving into his code.

Pretty random but did anyone had issues with RME Babyface Pro under linux? It would be perfect if not for occasional ear-raping glitches which can be fixed by swapping profile from Pro Audio to anything other than Pro Audio and then back to Pro Audio. That obviously ruins any workflow e. g. having to stop playback in Reaper, going to settings and clicking OK so it reconnects to Jack server.
I'm using pipewire + wireplumber under Arch but Fedora had same issues. Would be grim if it's the laptop I'm using.

H.R Giger was extremely based. Very talented. A free thinker.
SO free thinking and based that all of his art was admittedly inspired by being split roasted by two trans woman as he melted into an acid trip.

Does this “ruin” the gentlemanly and scholarly association?
Only if you’re dumb and have stupid hang ups about drugs and sexuality.
I still think it’s funny personally though.
- I know we’re joking but the dichotomy between picking on an arbitrary rule and then adulating his art stuck out.

First of all, I'm unemployed, so yes lol.
Second, even if I wasn't, the time it takes me to find and start the downloads is at most 2 minutes every 2 hours or so, which is much less than the time (and effort) I would have to put into any work that's realistically available to me to earn the money to buy the thing I'm pirating.

you load up a vst instrument in a daw, don't need anything to control it as it's triggered by midi. but you might want to use a keyboard or tap pads to tap in beats.

if you have mobile internet on your phone, you can turn airplane mode on and off to get a new IP adress and use incognito mode
if you have wired internet with dynamic IP, try restarting your router
>>
>>102262282
I have neither lol.
I used to have a dynamic IP at home but a few months ago it stopped changing when restarting my router.
I may call my provider about it but for now it's not that big of a deal.
Thank you anyways.

Anyone primarily use linux for music production? Some of these midi controllers look like an absolute nightmare to make use of on linux. I wanted to get a cheap arturia for the synths in analog lab but after a little research it looks like it's just not going to work out unless I run a different OS in a VM with passthrough.

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFIYvKAKGKs
this guy throws several digs at sabrina carpenter throughout the video. he doesn't think her music is just too girly for his taste, he think it straight up sucks. but women freaking love sabrina carpenter and chappell roan, so who's to say that their music isn't valid? you could say he has a huge blind spot in judging the quality of music in general. likewise, it's sad to see grumpy 40+ year old anons with extremely narrow and rigid music preferences, they either lack good audio or exposure to diverse types of music. especially if you're upset about a lack of dynamic range, it's clearly your audio that's the issue, you're not getting a fully linear loudness response so the peaks will be quieter than they should be relative to the lows, i.e. your audio is artificially compressed beyond what the mastering engineer intended. people like jacob collier and charlie puth got hyped up for having perfect pitch, but imagine what it's like to have endgame audio. it's life changing like getting prescription eyeglasses for the first time, or even bigger than that because your vision is just blurry but normalfag audio is fucked up more severely. of course you listen on crappy phone/laptop/car/etc speakers as well for reference, but a good mixing engineer should singlehandedly be able to get well within the ballpark of what's plausible for a song to sound like.

This was literally the second time I have ever posted in a /dmp/ thread in my life and the first time had nothing to do with controllers or linux. I'm not really a music guy and I don't know much about this. I just assumed if anyone knew about the viability of daily driving linux for music production, it'd be /g/.
>>
>>102263427
There are no actual Linux users on /g/, they're just stuck in a loop of installing the latest flavour of the month distro and ricing their desktops.
There are however, some good youtubers who primarily use Linux for production. Whether they are any good is another question but they can be very informative on the technical side (setting up etc)
>>
>>102262814
the issue here isn't the midi controller, it's playing the software. my midi controllers worked out of the box on linux. you need to use a daw that can play the arturia app. i have no idea about that, as i don't really use vsts

at 7 mins is the type of thing that would make intuitive sense to pay extra for, full range key expression and not just the old style aftertouch. it's still not necessary for traditional music production but maybe you could figure something out like you're not limited to piano larping you could make sounds that are more similar to other instruments or like invent virtual instruments

This is why books are good. If one book gets recommended by others despite all the Youtube stuff maybe you should give it a read.
The Mixing Engineer’s Handbook by Bobby Owsinski offers probably more value than 95% Of Youtube tutorials.
"Mixing Secrets“ by Mike Senior
"Mixing Audio" by Roey Izhaki

No idea about books about music production. I know there is a book about dance music production by a electronic music production magazine, but I can't say anything about it. In regards to production I would say Youtube is the better option.

Depends on your genre.
Yeah there are like 5 splice packs you can download/pirate and be set if you do EDM.
People regularly post any pack you would use for hip hop or modern pop / "underground" pop/hip-hop on reddit.
Vengeance if you're into retro stuff still flies obviously but plenty of people will say they're ass despite still being hugely popular.

Addictive drums or ezdrummer etc if you want acoustic. duh

>>
>>102296854
did you ever actually use sample packs or just hoard them? they're pretty useless
>>
>>102296994

You have to think about the cost benefit of making your own samples.
Imo it's only worth making your own if you're investing the time to make something that is both equally as high quality as what you would find i a commercial drum pack, and different enough to justify making it at all.
>>
>>102297004
yeah the daft punk or tracker type of spamming samples is deprecated. in hip hop they're fucking obsessed about using samples in creative ways but we're talking non-generic samples that need to be legally cleared. for other genres there are more modern tools you can use for sound design.

Everybody is making their own samples now or getting ones that are free to use or from a defunct company where the last guy with the rights died and nobody inherited them etc.

Unless they're on a major label and have a bunch of lawyers doing this for a living it's not worth it any more apparently. In the old days people could get away with it much more easily, automated content systems and legal notification ensures that you'll be caught and quickly these days even if you load that shit up on your personal Soundcloud or whatever, let alone try to sell an actual record. Even back in the day the KLF got busted and they were forced to destroy thousands of records. Now they'd take every penny you had and suck your very life essence out of you with a machine if you tried it.

>>
>>102300216
it's pure data entry, you just don't know how to make it 'go'

trackers are brilliant within their limitations
>>
>>102300334
I've used milkytracker before. It can work, but it's generally faster to accomplish the same thing with modern software. It might force you to be more deliberate with your decisions just because it takes longer to implement them.
>>
>>102300172
sampling is uninteresting to me regardless
usually the sound quality won't be top tier
you have more freedom to make whatever sound you want with modern software
sampling is kind of a hackjob workflow, even with an official remix, it's usually just a cash grab like the song is already done and you're just forcing it into some zoomer EDM genre or whatever like this

if i have no background in music whatsoever but wanted to make some songs using only beeps and boops. is that possible? and can i turn that into real sounding instruments or something interesting at least?

Yeah it's easy enough, just pick a musical scale and stick with it. Keep the beeps and boops in that scale and you'll be fine

I got an ambient/slow pace idea going, but the issue is that I want to pan them around. Which sounds great, except they occupy vastly different frequencies. So the stabs are going to be the only mid instrument, if I pan it to the left/right, which is gonna take away from the sound. How would you introduce panning to this type of track? My best idea is to layer instruments and then pan those around, but I fear it'll create a messy sound.

Is it bad to send all my tracks to a track with delay and reverb on it (not set to fully wet though, more like 60% wet or something) and then send only that track to the master track?
>>
>>102318994
That’s the same as just putting it on the master
Generally that’s a pretty bad idea unless you’re doing ambient or vaporwave etc
>>
>>102318994
i'm usually making a couple of fx tracks with small/close reverb, mid reverb and large/far reverb and send other tracks there according to layer

Holy some of these guitar tones are ass, I'd be so mad as a guitarist. Pretty interesting vid even though I'm not into metal

https://youtu.be/U_TtJo2_bh8?t=1916 some of them completely ignoring symphonic sections

Some of these mixes are truly dreadful but opened my eyes at how different some approaches can be, more so learning all the things I really don't like. I wish modern metal production wasn't so into this "hyperreality" shit that sounds awful, kicks are the worst offenders for me ~9:18

I decided to finally learn a DAW cause I figured I need stuff more advanced than Audacity.
Basically I like to mix songs, I'd grab a voice track from one song, an instrumental from another song and go "haha look it fits", so I need a DAW to work with samples a lot, stretch the time of those samples, chop them up in little bits, change their pitch, maybe even use something like Melodyne to finely tune a capellas, etc.
I also want to learn how to produce music and I chose Eurobeat since it's a genre I know very well, so any DAW recommendation for doing those two things would be awesome. Thanks anons.

Ableton Live.
12.1 is going to have a native pitch correction utility built it, so you won't even need Melodyne.

Ableton's Auto Shift is an alternative to real-time pitch correction software, like Autotune (in real time mode).
Melodyne isn't real time and works differently, so it's not really replaced by it.

Do you expect me to sit here and watch 10 hours of his content, most of which are live streams with no transcript, just so I can spoonfeed you a pointless answer to a question in a thread that's going to essentially disappear in less than an hour?
You can do that yourself if you really want to know, and don't just want to win 4chan arguments.

Or you can just listen to his music and hear very clearly that he almost always uses pretty basic patches that sound nothing like the videos in which he plays around with the modular.

Why would an FL Studio user need to use Reason?
Reason's main appeal is getting a bunch of quirky synths, something which FL (especially all plugins edition) already gives you. Reason isn't very popular as it is, if I was an FL user I would not purchase Reason at all as I'd already have enough synths/fx from FL. I'm more surprised that the number of Bitwig + Reason users is that high.
>>
>>102335895
Doesn't this apply to all third part plugins?
Like if FL Studio users already have enough stock synths to not want to use the Reason ones, they should also not want to use other third party synths, and go all-stock, right?
Unless Reason synths are in some way different than other third party synths.

>they should also not want to use other third party synths, and go all-stock, right?
I mean, a lot of them do. Especially vidya music producers, many of those just use stock FL plugins as there's enough there already. Similar situation with Reason.
>>
>>102335984
Provide source that he frequently uses his modular in his tracks then.
>>
>>102335990
From what I've seen I'd say that most FL users still use a lot of third party synths, and the stock-only people are a minority.

>Similar situation with Reason.
Well, Reason didn't support VST until pretty recently, so most Reason users just got used to the stock-only workflow (or prefer it, given their choice to use Reason).
>>
>>102336063
Reason has its own device extension format that's existed since the early 2010's, although a lot of people used ReWire to use Reason with other DAWs. ReWire support was dropped recently. The people I know that use FL mostly use the stock instruments, but do use third party plugins for mixing.
