tried a bunch of community update packs like simplix etc. and modded installers but it always hangs or crashes on boot even if the installer completes

I live in a turdworld country with high inflation and high taxes. Thinkpads were never widely available for the general masses, only banks had them though bulk enterprise deals and now only refurbishing sketchy shops have them and they set the price they want.
Older models are cheaper but they are all in way worst condition. The newer models have better specs but they are too expensive and too chinky. The only models that have a good balance between price and quality are the T470 and T480, but I heard that the T480 have some problems with the thunderbolt.

It's not hard. Keeping track of the screws is the most difficult part because they're not all the same. Take pictures as you go and keep the screws for different "layers" in plastic bags, label the layers as you go. Auto mechanics do the same thing. Keep a disassembly/reassembly YT video pulled up on a different device, follow along and go take your time. E-Z. If you do all of that it's almost impossible to fuck it up.

Re the anons saying that the heat is due either to redditors putting the laptops on their laps or not repasting old machines: I have a new Gen 11 Carbon and it reaches 100C and throttles without any difficulty. I've repasted it more than once, and Lenovo support actually replaced the heatsink+mobo once because they'd gotten fused together. Again: new laptop. But it's an intel carbon, so perhaps the non-intel and less thin machines are better.

Are the screws on the base of E14s supposed to come out? I have an E14 gen 3, and every guide says to remove the screws, but every screw on the back of mine loosens a certain amount, then starts clicking and refuses to unscrew more, which makes me wonder if they're captive. Definitely too afraid to try prying the back off without knowing they're out first, though. Anyone have any experience?

What's the general consensus on the L480? Is it worth it for £121 ($159)

I'm looking to get rid of my gaming desktop in favor of a laptop. My budget is around $200. I plan on using it mostly for researching/browsing the web/school. I want something that will be repairable, and somewhat future proof. I might get into programming, but I've never done it, and know nothing about it. I've got 2570p, and it's running KDE on 5400 rpm HDD and 4 GB of ram.
Things are fine until it start swapping, I mistakenly put the SWAP on the outer part of the HDD, I've reduced swapiness, which helped somewhat.
But what can I do improve performance other than buying SSD?
I've disabled Krunner, disabled some of the fancy animations.

My x220 ips screen came in and it displays colors in a weird way.
Near white colors are bright teal and near blacks are red. I remember having this exact same issue on my HP pavilion back in 2015. I searched the internet for this and nothing came up. Nothing. Weird how I've had this exact issue on two laptops already but I couldn't find any info on this.

X1C will have more premium screens and you can get them on an L series budget if you don't insist on buying new. Whatever line you pick, consider a generation with a 16:10 screen (L14 G2/3/4 won't) if he's going to be primarily doing browsing and productivity work. And AMDs are better all around since about 2018. I wouldn't sneeze at an E14G5 for his use case.

The x230 keyboard swap kinda worked, the board registers the keyboard and it works as it should, except for the track point buttons. Apparently it needs more pressure on the connector, adding a piece of paper between the connector and clamps failed though. I also replaced the thermal paste but taking this thing apart and putting it back together took longer than expected so now I'm fucking tired.
I hope I can get this thing working tomorrow

Hey fuckos. I recently replaced my E14 Gen 3 battery, went from 45wh one to a 57wh one. The new one clearly works, and reports a current charge of 47.3wh with inxi --battery, but it also doesn't show the actual capacity of the battery, nor does it show the actual percentage on the taskbar, still being at the ~62% I left the original battery with before storage. Is there any way to force it to update?

Picrel is what it's reporting in inxi --battery. Clearly it shouldn't be 105%, kek.

i have an x260 i7 6600u. i plan on upgrading the screen and replacing both batteries. just go for a 1080 screen. I thought the 720 screen would be good enough but the viewing angles are horrible. I have to max the brightness whenever I'm using it. the battery life on troonix is worse than windows. even with tlp installed. it only has 1 ram slot that maxes out at 16gb. it also gets pretty warm on the left side where the fan sits. I found a PDF guide at thinkpads.com that shows me how to replace the thermal paste on the heatsink. problem is I don't have any thermal paste but do have an extra thermal pad. would it be worth just using the thermal pad? can any anons tell me their experience using thermal pads?
