Hi, I'm new to the thinkpad cult, is this a good deal?

I'm going to use it to watch kinos and youtube while at home and for email and web browsing while traveling.
Other then upgrading storage with my own SSD and maybe upgrading the RAM and battery down the line, I have no intention of upgrading the screen or any other mod.

Applying epoxy to RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read-Only Memory) is generally not recommended for several reasons:

1. **Heat Dissipation**: Both RAM and ROM generate heat during operation, and covering them with epoxy can impede their ability to dissipate heat. This could lead to overheating and potential damage to the components.

2. **Electrical Insulation**: Epoxy acts as an insulator, which means it could interfere with the electrical connections necessary for RAM and ROM to function properly.

3. **Irreversibility**: Once epoxy is applied and cured, it is very difficult to remove without damaging the underlying components. This makes any repair or upgrade impossible without replacing the entire component.

4. **Practicality**: There are no practical benefits to encasing RAM or ROM in epoxy for typical use cases. While epoxy can be used to ruggedize electronics for specific industrial applications, this is not common for consumer-grade RAM and ROM[1][4].

Therefore, it is not safe or advisable to put epoxy on RAM or ROM unless there is a specific need for ruggedization and the potential risks are mitigated through careful engineering.

yes

tlp works too, you just edit tlp.conf

You know, for a supposedly locked down BIOS, the x230 was actually surprisingly easy to downgrade. You just force run the old BIOS file through the command prompt and that's it.

I live in a turdworld country with high inflation and high taxes. Thinkpads were never widely available for the general masses, only banks had them though bulk enterprise deals and now only refurbishing sketchy shops have them and they set the price they want.
Older models are cheaper but they are all in way worst condition. The newer models have better specs but they are too expensive and too chinky. The only models that have a good balance between price and quality are the T470 and T480, but I heard that the T480 have some problems with the thunderbolt.

My old laptop is on his last legs, and I need to make a decision quickly. What should I do them?

>>102217170
imo this is a go big or go home thing in 2024. If you have a shitty TN, just live with it and look for the next upgrade. Or go whole hog and do the FHD/2k/whatever mod. Swapping a meme resolution TN for a meme resolution IPS won't be a game changer. Yes, the IPS in the X220/30 is better but it has its own issues with ghosting and I've seen better IPS screens in general.

Lenovo needs to drop the physical trackpad buttons and provide a first rate glass trackpad with haptic feedback. They also need to minimize bezel size without this absurd webcam bump seen on the latest gen of ThinkPads. These two design factors are the only thing keeping the ThinkPad series from being the best current option.

I'm a real ThinkPad user. I'm not a larper. I work with a fleet of these machines every day. ThinkPads are deployed to thousands of normies all over the world as office laptops. Not a single one of them uses the TrackPoint. I'm not saying deprecate the TrackPoint, I'm saying enhance the trackpad and let the very very few trackpoint folks use haptic buttons on a larger, nicer trackpad.

I'm really interested in knowing if the 720p has less power draw than 1080p. 99% of the time I use a laptop it's connected to an external monitor and dock, so the resolution isn't important to me, but rather the battery life when I'm not at my desk.

My current laptop screen (Galaxy Book Flex, 2 in 1, can fold in half and turn into a tablet) has a severely cracked screen to the point where unless I turn off the touch screen service within Windows, it will get phantom touches that make it unusable. I would like it fixed but the local repair shop is quoting me are around $450 since the screen is more expensive than normal laptop screens. I can afford it but that also seems a bit much for a screen repair. I'm currently eyeing a renewed Lenovo ThinkPad T480S. https://a.co/d/5FNsqah

Based local shopper
I get my laptops from my local university's tech recycling center and /tpg/ always seethes because I won't tell them where I got my $90 Latitude 5410, $120 precision 3551, or $150 XPSs 9300 and 9510 with 4k panels
Enjoy your overpriced eBay scraps, incels; you have to actually go outside to get deals like these
>>
>>102251787
lol I swear. touching grass and knowing how to talk to people can go a long way. this e-center is also near my local university. I wish I had this knowledge years ago. I still have an HP spectre x360 that I spent $1k on brand new in 2018 and almost never use it now. the only downside to buying used is bad battery life but I've only experienced that with thinkpads honestly.
>>
>>102251787
Damn, all the recycling centers I've been to have good stuff but they won't sell it, dunno what they do with it. It seems people just drop shit off there they don't want, they don't even list to sell it first.

It's not hard. Keeping track of the screws is the most difficult part because they're not all the same. Take pictures as you go and keep the screws for different "layers" in plastic bags, label the layers as you go. Auto mechanics do the same thing. Keep a disassembly/reassembly YT video pulled up on a different device, follow along and go take your time. E-Z. If you do all of that it's almost impossible to fuck it up.

Meanwhile, I can only get Precision 7540 (8C Xeon, highest CPU; T2000; 64GB 2TB) for €600. sadly yeah, europoors :-(. Even bargain ebay auction here can only go around €400-500 for even lower specs.
Still, Dell is underrated because most people riding at ThinkPad hype and sellers jack up prices (P53, ThinkPad equivalent of mine for example is €150-200 more expensive). Even with Dell's regressing design, so does ThinkPad. The newest models make me puke

Blessed digits.

Someone explain to me what happened
>own T520
>hadnt repasted or cleaned since 2015 because reasons, also chainsmoker
>finally did a thorough cleaning last week
>now wifi speed maxes my ISP at 60mbps, which isnt much but for some reason it wouldnt go past 15mbps before
>can fill my ram without getting a bluescreen
>metal hinges dont give a "static" or "poor grounding" or "buzzing" feeling when I touch them
>obvs doesnt overheat anymore
I get that repaste makes it so the cpu doesnt throttle, but what about the rest? Can cleaning really improve seemingly unrelated poor performance? Maybe poor grounding or static build up from cig ash flakes? I took off the power jack and bent out the little metal clips it has (for direct grounding with the magnesium frame is my guess)
>>
>>102256235
Likely static electric fuckery from sucking in a decade of ash and smoke (imagine what it does inside your lungs).

What's an X1 Carbon gen I can buy that's the best balance between value/price and useful life left?
>>
Go on r/thinkpad and write ''throttling'' or ''overheating'' in the search bar, you will be presented with so many threads with those issues. Thinkpads sound like a meme to me, like people just buy them to put some linux distro on it, post the neofetch screenshot, then as soon as they open a couple of programs the 8th gen cpus on those ancient machines will overheat and throttle. They seem to be more of a fashion statement than actually working machines

Holy shit the track point on these things is godly. Why did laptops have to drop this feature? This is so much better than track pads.
>>
>>102259798
these machines are really old and you'll need to replace the thermal paste under the heatsink. also redditards are probably using their machine on their laptop or bed. also they don't clean out the Doritos crumbs
>>
>>102259798
Re the anons saying that the heat is due either to redditors putting the laptops on their laps or not repasting old machines: I have a new Gen 11 Carbon and it reaches 100C and throttles without any difficulty. I've repasted it more than once, and Lenovo support actually replaced the heatsink+mobo once because they'd gotten fused together. Again: new laptop. But it's an intel carbon, so perhaps the non-intel and less thin machines are better.
>>
>>102262065
That's expected behavior on 10-14th Intel though.

Are the screws on the base of E14s supposed to come out? I have an E14 gen 3, and every guide says to remove the screws, but every screw on the back of mine loosens a certain amount, then starts clicking and refuses to unscrew more, which makes me wonder if they're captive. I joined the Thinkpad cult thinking it was a good way to get a cheap laptop, but its actually not. It can be, particularly if your budget is <500. But if you have 500+, you can definitely build a cheaper, more powerful computer for less money, by simply learning to be a better buyer of tech. Knowing where and what a good deal is. Usually it's a second-hand previous-gen (11th/12th gen Intel or Ryzen 5000+) gaming laptop, with an ARC GPU. We're talking DDR5, PCIe gen4, modern cooling, fast refresh-rate screen, 2.5GbE, Wifi 6E, aluminium frame, and a shitty built-in keyboard.

Anyway i'm typing this on my Thinkpad so even though I say all that I still always pick up the Thinkpad to shit and 4chin. Maybe because it's such a cheap PoS?

My pops needs a 14" ThinkPad.
Use case: browsing, online banking, email, some consulting work perhaps.
I can change ram/memory no issue, when that's more economical to do so. 45% NTSC is a no-go. No OS is a bonus. Preferably new.
I can get student discount, when available.

L14 G2/3/4 ? Should I focus just on those & wait for a sale? T480 seems great, but when considering long term, 8th gen CPU does not seem that smart for hungry Microsoft apps.

X1C will have more premium screens and you can get them on an L series budget if you don't insist on buying new. Whatever line you pick, consider a generation with a 16:10 screen (L14 G2/3/4 won't) if he's going to be primarily doing browsing and productivity work. And AMDs are better all around since about 2018. I wouldn't sneeze at an E14G5 for his use case.

The x230 keyboard swap kinda worked, the board registers the keyboard and it works as it should, except for the track point buttons. Some were cooming over the T14G5 with the return of user-replaceable RAM modules in a T series (soldered wifi tho lol). I'd say come back in 5 years when they get cheap enough and everybody will have those but this general is practically on life support.

Meanwhile Es and Ls have had them the whole time and quality/durability has mostly evened out between Lenovo's business product lines in the last ~5 years. That's not reflected in the sticky. Yes, Ts and Xs are better, but not by a lot in the modern era and there are tradeoffs some might wisely make depending on what they value. This isn't a popular opinion here but it's factual.

I put a piece of cardboard in there, there was so much pressure on the connector that the fucking board was bending and the track point buttons were still not working. If that's not enough pressure somehow then I don't know what I need to do to provide it.
I uncovered the pins and everything works, fuck it. I just hope it doesn't burn down the board.
>>
>>102273007
What? you can bind it?
How?

yoga screen funny
flicker + horizontal rows of pixels bad, missing, + resolution missing (appears lower resolution)
re seated cable, worked for five minutes, if something touches the area of the screen with the cable it makes the le funny screen glitch
issue started when the inside got wet in the rain, dried cable and it worked again until recently.
touch screen has never been functional.
what happened? what do i do?(without paying) i think its issue is with the connections not the display.
i feel like its going to get worse pretty fast if i dont get the worlds most obvious solution

Wanna get a 14" thinkpad to do simple office work on linux (Anki, PDF organisation, simple LaTex) on the go or on the sofa. I want a battery life of at least 3 hours and a USB-C charger. Planning to spend around 200€ for used devices. I've been looking at the T480. What do you guys think?

found an odd offer for 200€ from a notebook shop with an i5-8350U 1,70 GHz (3,60 GHz Boost). That GHz number is pretty low right? Is that normal?

I have a bunch of t430s i got from local businesses a while back. Ive had this pile of like 5. Is it worth selling them at this point? Seems like they still go for $70+ but i was wondering you guys think theyre worth sitting on for if they become collectible for coreboot people. I'd probably keep one.

Just buy a MacBook

you (and perhaps only you) seem to have this problem which is very likely not something to do with the hardware being damaged, but rather something to do with your software setup. I'm suggesting this because you have an apparently very rare issue replicated across hardware. Look for the common factor.
>>
Do you consider soldered Thinkpads to be real Thinkpads? I’ve thought about buying a used refurbished Thinkpad from a computer store for fun.
>>
>>102271986
absolutely with no problems I would recommend an X260
>>
I’m not a pro photographer but I lake a lot of photos and do light editing on them. I’m also on the move a lot and a big laptop isn’t a comfortable choice for me.
Are there any good (preferably older/used) models I could pick? Something that either has a good screen or something that can has it’s screen replaced with something good?

>>
>>102289833
on my hp pavillion I had windows 8
on my x220 I've got arch + xfce but for a moment I had win10

two different windows versions and linux? I doubt this is a software issue
On top of that my hp pavilion started doing this after I fucked up the cable
First the cable smoked for a few seconds and after that the colors started being weird.

A new IPS screen is going to arrive in a week. If the issue persists I'll try different software solutions. If the issue persists I'll buy a new 40pin cable. If the issue persists I'll buy a new x220 mobo. If the issue persists I'll get a lasik. If the issue persists I'll go to the psych ward.

consider soldering the connector pins to the screen cable of an old netbook and mounting the iphone inside of the netbook casing, you can also try this with the batteries and add one extra port for data and usb docking :) regards from india

Did you only reseat the cable on the mobo end? Might try it at the display end or (yes I know, costs money) replace the cable. They're not going to be very expensive.
>>
>>102290565
i did both sides, im starting to think its on the board and moving the screen pulls the cable
either this or its the insulation tape or using the screen pulling the cable on either end
right now its better but there are still missing horizontal lines
they arent black or white, theyre just making text look funny
there are no parts for this model i swear, i might be better off just getting the same again for fifty bucks and adding the storage from this one to the new one

Looking to buy a Thinkpad and a 2TB NVMe and use it as a Media Centre PC to hook up to a big monitor. Which one should I get? Only needs to handle 1080p movies/anime at most.

I currently use a T470s as daily driver and might end up buying another one of those just as media center, but maybe other options are better?

Still waiting for my T400 to arrive, so I wanted to ask what's the point of coreboot/libreboot? I see in videos that you need some extra hardware to change your BIOS, but what are the advantages of it, besides being FOSS? Should I go out of my way to buy the stuff needed to install it?

i have an x260 i7 6600u. i plan on upgrading the screen and replacing both batteries. just go for a 1080 screen. I thought the 720 screen would be good enough but the viewing angles are horrible. I have to max the brightness whenever I'm using it. the battery life on troonix is worse than windows. even with tlp installed. it only has 1 ram slot that maxes out at 16gb. it also gets pretty warm on the left side where the fan sits. I found a PDF guide at thinkpads.com that shows me how to replace the thermal paste on the heatsink. problem is I don't have any thermal paste but do have an extra thermal pad. would it be worth just using the thermal pad? can any anons tell me their experience using thermal pads?
>>
>>102295901
I've always wondered - how much does single-channel RAM gimp the performance on the X240-X280?
>>
>>102296214
the most i use my machine for is downloading ps3 ROMs and converting them from iso to folder. use ftp to switch mod menus and stuff like that. not much heavy use. the only game I play is edopro which is a yugioh simulator but its very light even an old android phone can run it. I don't use my x260 for any demanding tasks but it still gets a lot warmer than my t460.
>>
>>102295901
>thermal pads
Laptops need low viscosity thermal paste. They also have difficulty using pads because it's a guessing game as to getting the mounting pressure right.
>>
>>102292222
The original x1 carbon was like the blueprint for what Lenovo would turn all ThinkPads into. They always tell you where things are going.
>>
>>102296829
I mean x1 (not carbon.) if you see the old X1 remember its stablemates were like the x301. It's a pretty stark design difference, but now all ThinkPads look like the X1.

Cool. Yeah, reseat it and use some really strong tape. Should be fine. Make sure the cable has some amount of slack at the hinge so it doesn't pull when you open it.
