OLED is a huge upgrade; instant response and infinite contrast, and it's totally free in terms of computer resources.

don't fall for the 4k meme, though. scaling is bad.

27" 1440p 240hz+ OLED is endgame territory, and they're everywhere for like $600 now. don't use it as your main monitor though, for many reasons
- not RGB subpixel layout
- white background will use like 300% the power of an LCD, so documents and webpages
- burn-in more likely with all of the static UI of normal desktop tasks

they will last as long as an LCD if you use it for videos and games
>>
>>102351501
All those cons is the reason why I will never use OLED.
I tried OLED. It looks so fucking good, but the fact that I can't use it for everyday stuff is what kills it for me. It's like buying good and expensive plates and cutlery but only using it once a year. I will never understand it.

How do binned GPU's work exactly?
Nvidia produced a chip with 2000 cores, all 2000 work properly, they sell it as-is as something called RTX **90?
Then another chip of the same make only has 1947 cores out of 2000 working so they disable those that don't work plus 147 more and the chip with 1800 working cores is now called the RTX **80 model?
>>

But the number of cores on every GPU model is exact, doesn't that mean that they almost always disable healthy cores in order to meet that number?
OR, do they specifically look for cores that work but not as well as could be, so they disable those and leave only the top performers?
In that case, the models where ~33% of cores are disables could actually have the best per-core performance.
>>

GPUs need to lower their prices

I only have 2 slots for NVMes
I plan to replace a 2TB HDD I have with a 2TB SSD, but I'd rather have those not populated by this particular drive.
I thought of either grabbing a SATA SSD or an external one, Crucial X6's seem cheap. I don't have much of an use for the external factor though. What would be a better option?

I already plan to grab 2 (one for the OS, one for storage and game installs). This is just a "backup" (non important stuff that I just want to keep somewhere) drive, but I want to replace that one first.
I thought of using just one SSD for the OS and everything else but with how often I fuck around I like the idea of having a separate drive for the OS.

>>
>the sata cable from my power supply is not powering my external ssd

Why the fuck is this not working
>>
>>102352279
>external ssd
what
>>
>>102351894
That's how they do it up to a point. There are also binned versions of chips with the exact same amount of cores enabled but higher performing ones (higher clocks at lower voltages) get sold as higher tier products like what happened with "A" and "non-A" rtx2000 gpus where the latter had worse clocks and had a strict locked down power limit.

Also yields are bad to a point such as having 99% of your chips having 80% or more of it's cores working. So to service the lower end of the market, Nvidia and AMD designs smaller versions of the flagship chip and use it in lower tier GPUs so they don't have to needlessly cut away 40-80% of a fully functioning die and waste silicon. So GPUs like the rtx2080 super has the fully enabled version of a smaller die while the rtx2070 gets a binned down version of the same chip while the 2080ti uses a bigger die and 2060 a smaller die

Bros, help.
I have this Asus Z790 Plus motherboard and it doesn't recognize my NVMe M.2 2280 SSDs as a bootable device. I even bought a new SSD and it still doesn't work. I read the manual and it should be compatible with that. In the UEFI BIOS thingy, on "Storage Information", the device appears properly (RAID: KINGSTON SKC3000D2048G) but it doesn't appear anywhere else. I tried plugging a bootable windows USB and it doesn't recognize it either. I updated the BIOS to the latest version (aug 2024).
I am losing my mind.
>>
>>102352160
Usually not a fan of those external SSDs. I still prefer buying internal and using a USB to SATA adapter instead. No real reason other than the fact that if I ever want to put the SSD inside my PC I could easily do that. Externals I have to transfer files over.

So, I had two NVMes. One from my old setup which had windows installed on it and etc, and this brand new NVMe. None of them is recognizable as an available booting device. I took out the old NVMe because I was worried that it may be interfering with something, so I planned on installing a fresh windows on the new NVMe just to make sure everything is working properly.
The thing is, when I try to install windows on that NVMe, the windows boot installer doesn't recognize it (it is missing even from the 'diskpart' and 'disc list' commands when I access the CMD (shift+f10 in the windows installer)

please someone help me choosing a monitor, it's driving me insane now

seems like the ones my country got are:
1) MSI MAG 271QPX 26.5" QD-OLED E2 but 240hz version only. though i just found a 360hz one on our marketplace
2) gigabyte FO27Q3 27" but 360hz and REGULAR oled (not QD). i heard people are considering it as an alternative to that msi
3) samsung oddysey OLED G6, 360hz

I also heard they all have forced DSC so no dldsr. of those 3, what should I choose if my priority is long term stable work. I just want to buy something and forget about it for >5 years at least. the prices are somewhat same

>>
>>102353937
Option 1 is the best in terms of image quality due to both being QD-OLED and a glossy coating (the Samsung in #3 uses a matte coating that ruins the clarity and lushness of the image). For long term use I recommend also getting a cheap throwaway office LCD for main desktop/web usage and using the OLED for Video/Gaming only so it's doesn't burn-in prematurely.

Slow boot times (25 seconds to desktop from cold start) brought me here.
It has Samsung M2 SATA 860 EVO with 98% health left.

I want to be able to sort of mute a HDD until I need to access it, which is rarely. Without just buying an external enclosure, all I'm getting now is the hard drive to either constantly spin or wake up from sleep at random even when I rarely access it myself because Windows is just like that.
Obviously I don't think it's great to just open my case to plug and unplug the drive everytime. What would you recommend?
Would mobo SATA hotswap settings help there? maybe under that mode it doesn't behave the same? Should I go bother /fwt/ for a Windows solution?

>do you wanna say that OLED will burn in even if I use it every day with giving a fuck about safety shit?
If you let it run it's panel refresh cycles on schedule it'll be good for at least 3 years. If you don't and treat it like you would an LCD with a lot of static content and don't make use of the included panel safety features it could burn in in 6 months which I why I recommend using your current LCD if you aren't posting from a laptop or getting a dirt cheap one to use for non-dynamic content consumption. Think of OLED like a giant wax candle that is constantly burning it's wick down.

Ask yourself why you need 2TB and think REAL hard if you really need it. You could get a fast 1TB NVMe and a slower 1TB SATA SSD if all you really need is storage. If you are reading and writing large files constatly, and I mean large files and I mean constantly, like 30GB+ and every 30mins or so, then you can justify spending money on a really fast NVMe.

I'm one of the few people that like having my OS and everything else separate. 500GB really fast NVMe, 2TB SATA SSD for my stuff that I access constantly, and a 120TB HDD server.

Thanks for the help, anons, and sorry for the late answer - fell asleep. Just moved from over a decade old Intel so almost 90°C seemed disturbing.

>I severely doubt that
The thing is, I got the tower used for cheap, with no parts other than the mounting kit for some old LGA. Looked it up - seems like I could turn it 90° with the different springscrew brackets, but the AM5 kit I bought only included the mounting bars. I wonder how it managed to fit at all with those LGA parts, even rotated, but can't complain - didn't cost much and cools sufficiently.

That's surprising actually, I thought yields would be worse now than before because they're working with such small die sizes.

But what I really would like to know is, is it better to buy one of the 100% chips or one of the ones where cores have been disabled?
For instance, the 4070 Ti has the full 7860 cores of the AD104 up and running. That might sound pretty safe (especially when recalling the GTX 970 fiasco) but you might also think of it as Nvidia being lax on quality control here.
If all 7860 cores are running, it's reasonable to assume that some of them only perform "well enough" by Nvidia's standards. Maybe they generate a bit more heat but only around 3% more so it's not a huge deal.
Whereas with the 4070 Ti SUPER, they disabled 1792 out of the AD103's total 10240 cores, leaving only the most efficient 8448 cores active. So you might be tempted to think that that would give you a better per core efficiency.
What do you think about this?
>>

So my 10 year old build finally kicked the bucket. On Monday I found out that one of my ram sticks burned out, so I ordered some cheap ddr3 ram to replace it, and the parts came in last night. After slotting everything in, I couldn’t get the machine to post so I gave up and handed the machine off to a friend who’s less tech illiterate than me, hoping that he might be able to fix the issue.

I don’t really have the money for a full build atm, I was saving up to get something really nice after tax season. I know you guys generally look down on pre built PCs, but can anyone recommend something under $700 (I can go very slightly higher) to tide me over for a few months while I save up for a more elaborate build? I’m a pretty casual boomer gamer. My current games right now are WoW, FF14, Dota, and Deadlock. None of these are particularly hard to run, they ran just fine on 10 year old hardware.

Boost override (iirc) pulls the entire voltage curve up to get more clocks so the undervolt will inherently be less as moar clocks = moar volts.

Fat and thick. It feels like you could drop it and it would survive.
Just use the bracket they include of else you will end up with a cracked PCB because of how heavy they are.

One of you faggots posted about the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor and got me really infatuated with it. But I want a low profile version of it but they don't exist.

Does anyone here know of anything resembling the Xeon Phi that comes in a low profile variant? Specifically a coprocessor, not a GPU or accelerator. I've looked for about a week and cannot find anything that compares or meets similar criteria.

4070/ti are 1080p cards, 12GB VRAM is no longer good enough for 1440p

pic related is space marine 2 maxed out at 1440p with dlss quality on a 4080

I guess. Even a GayStation 5 has like 16GB or some shit but it's shared so not really. Either way, there's more to it than that or else a 4060 with 16GB would destroy the 12GB 4070. Mostly texture quality but a lot has to do with your resolution too.

QuickSync for video editing, multi-monitor, and as a backup if your card dies. Probably worth $30 for the last one if this is your first build.

Interesting I have 4 monitors so this could be useful. Do you have to configure something or does it just help in the background?

Not my first build but I do like having a safety net and $30 isn't much in the grand scheme
Thanks.

It doesn't increase performance or anything it just gives you another display output.

Than you probably have an old card you can use for backup instead. Still, could be worth the money if you don't trust your old GPU.

I'm planning to build a very basic home server using spare parts from an old gaming rig I have. The hoarders were right. I don't care about aesthetics so all I need to buy are the hard disks (Ironwolfs on the next sale, if ever).
How much of a disadvantage is it to use the Ryzen 5 2600 which I have as the CPU, as opposed to a CPU with integrated graphics? I have a spare GPU for the initial setup and can remote in afterwards, but how much idle wattage difference will there be vs some AM4 Athlon?

Can't find anything smol enough either. For context, this is more or less how my desk is looking right now (more or less 1px/mm, some objects' dimensions extra simplified, mousepad is super deformed with rounded corners so just dots for a rough outline, some things probably not measured quite right anyway).
I wish good monitors with speakers were real... was so close to going for the XG27UCS.

something as old as an athlon is going to be incredibly power hungry, and if you want to serve media from said server you're totally gimped with any amd gpu. Intel really dominates the use case you're going for unless you NEED huge media performance in which case ryzen cpu is ok paired with intel gpu
