I had Windows 10 installed on an SSD, but then the SSD died, and now I need to reinstall it on a new SSD. How do I do that, if I don't have an install disc or anything? I'm pretty sure the OS was synched to my Microsoft account, although when I look on microsoft.com, I only see the computer itself, not the OS.

>Research and observations from earlier Windows versions showed that people rarely used Alt+Tab to switch between apps. After discussing this with some users, we learned they loved the feature, saying that it would be highly productive, but they did not know about it previously. Based on this, we created the Task View button in Windows to make this feature more discoverable. Later diagnostic data showed significantly higher usage of this feature.

Alt-tab was good in the era of single monitor setups, but with multi monitor and virtual desktops I wish they would add the ability to limit it to focused monitor AND desktop. Right now you can limit it to focused desktop but it still cycles programs from both monitors.

For that reason I tend to use Task View and mouse instead now, but I'd like to use both equally.

Some Linux distros require you to have the Secure Boot disabled. If it's already disabled you can't upgrade to a typical windows version and it must be IoT enterprise I believe as it's the only version that allows having the Secure Boot disabled.

my method to deal with this it to keep installations on their own hard disks and to disconnect the existing disk before I install. doing this makes each OS maintain it's own EFI boot partition.

when I re-attach the existing disk I end up with two entries in the UEFI boot menu and can choose to boot whichever from there.

It's safe and more convenient, especially if you're juggling between different iso's and/or unattend files. Even if you have only one iso file, you can also just slap in a rescuezilla iso as well.

IoT LTSC 2024 is made to run on computers that run on BIOS/MBR configs still.
It literally is just a choice between 10 or 11, and if you think your computer parts will benefit from the additions 11 includes.
>>
>>102728541
11 is only good for gaming. It's slower than 10 for the daily tasks amd5 a whole lot more resourc heavy. Only you can decide what you prefer. Start with 10, run it for a day while you're setting it up to your liking then do a Disk Backup and try win11 for a day. If you're happy with win11 keep using it. If not, restore the disk backup of win10.

rmworkdir

dependencies: p7zip (extraction), wimlib (recompression), mkisofs (iso creation)
tested with win10 iot ent. ltsc '21 64bit which comes out to 3.5GiB, and win11 iot ent. '24 64bit which comes out to 3.8GiB

>>102729452
it's not needed, it's just what i'm used to
>>
>>102729452
what IS strange however is why microsoft doesn't ship them like that in the first place. i can't think of a reason why they shouldn't be using solid archives for install.wim
wimlib (foss .wim manipulation suite) does also have better compression than microsoft's own equivalent dism tool, which i would say is ironic, considering also it's using its' own bespoke compression algorithms
should note that solid compression does need a fair bit of ram, i can and have posted pre-done iso's in fwt but naturally modified iso's are hard to verify aren't dodgy, hence i put the commands i used into a script instead

That garbage laptop has x86/32bit OS installed. 64bit OSs take more ram by default. Those who post screenshots of low ram usage are usually made of freshly installed systems running in VMs without any drivers installed. The more peripherals your laptop/pc has the more ram those driver services will consume. Never believe anyone before testing it yourself.

Is there a setting (e.g. regedit) that makes them disappear when the folder is empty?
>>
>>102731430
Pretty much every version from 2016 onward is a frozen 2016 update via 365 being based on it. After you install a C2R Office suite you can just use ShutUp10 to disable its telemetry nonsense and then it shouldn't really make the computer any slower.

Yeah not this anon but I've got a slightly question regarding Windows 11 NTSC.

I want to use some of the "bloat" features like A.I., making a cutting edge build. I also want access to all of the newest patches for shit like for Ryzen which has shown to have issues on 11.

So hypothetically if I want access to say, Copilot, am I going to get cucked out of it if I go with IoT NTSC install? Will it get the regular updates (such as the Ryzen optimization one that came recently) as fast as the other installs? This Windows 11 NTSC is so new that it seems like there's just not a lot of verified right now.

Basically the tl;dr is what functionality am I going to lose by going with IoT NTSC? I don't care how invasive or spyware intensive it is. Like will I be able to use Xbox Game Pass since the NTSC seemingly removes all the Xbox connectivity or is that its own thing?

if you want bloat like copilot and xbox services stuff you can still get it but that adds extra work

with LGBT you still get quality and security updates, so in theory you get the same improvements for CPUs at the same time as Home/Pro

Copilot is a bit all over the place since first it was a feature then an uninstallable app, so MS can't get their shit together with that

so no, if you want that shit, just stick with Pro

If not use SDIO because sometimes Windows misses a few drivers (happened to me on my current machine. I had no audio even after updating W10 but SDIO fixed it. It also happened on another machine I have where Windows didn't download drivers for the Wi-Fi card but SDIO did)

When installing windows on laptop, what's the best practice for installing drivers?
Because I was under the impression win10/11 generic drivers online would be enough.
But I installed Win10 on Lenovo (Ideapad 131-15lkb)
>USB 3.0 port didn't work and was behaving as USB 2.0
>Intel GPU usage was high all the time
>Connecting external monitor (I had to plug in the HDMI before the laptop boot up)
>Touchpad multi touch didn't work, and even gestures like side scroll
I had to go the lenovo support site and install the drivers manually, even the lenovo driver scanner tool failed.
Is this just an accident? or there is better way to do this?
>>
>>102742836
Might be DNS related try changing it
>>
>>102744832
For this kind of shit it's best to either just get drivers from the OEM model's support page or use Snappy Driver Installer Origin and hope it can find the right drivers for you.
>>
>>102744323
are you sure thats enough
i install shit like visual studio
>>
>>102744945
So it's a hit and miss?
I tested some other laptops and found similar issues.
The device manager reports all drivers are up to date, but when testing thoroughly you start to find some issue.
One of the laptops had monitor that can go to 60 Hz, but it was doing 30 Hz.
Another laptop had USB 3.0 while it was doing those speed, it was getting too hot.
I updated those and thing worked as it should be, heck even the USB 3.0 port become even faster.
>>
>>102744992
It's on an OEM PC by OEM PC basis pretty much. I myself haven't run into serious issues like this with an OEM using a default driver much at all.
>>
>>102745015
What did you use?
Because I think this depends on the hardware
>>102744992
I guess this happens on the lower or mid range models.
Ideapad is mid range, I had this issue as well with lower ends.
Also the generic drivers don't have some fancy stuff like smart power mangment.
My T480 last less than 2 hours on battery, after installing the drivers from lenovo, it last 7 hours.
>>
>>102745075
Recently an older Lenovo laptop from around 2013 I was messing with, though I guess my case might be fringe because I noticed that the default wireless driver was making the wifi drop randomly but I used an ethernet to USB adapter to get a connection instead anyway and those are plug and play if you need an ethernet connection.

Say you have a specific GPU driver that just werks then the Windows Update shits all over your system by updating that driver in the background. Additionally, MS doesn't always download OEM specific driver extensions that relating to power management and/or proprietary functions and/or integration. It's best to do it yourself than rely on MS or universal driver packs.

Heres some useful tools for debloating windows 10/11:
-autoruns: easily configure startup apps & delete useless \registries
-0&0shutup10: useful for disabling telemetry stuff
-winaero tweaker: tons of useful options in this one, just try it out
-10AppsManager: mass uninstall the preinstalled bloatware apps in one click
-manually optimize the settings app and turn off all the garbage (this one is the most tedious but should take you 20 minutes at most)
-explorerpatcher: brings back windows 10 start menu on win11. has other useful taskbar/explorer features. works on all versions of win11 except 24h2 for now.

Yep. It's like Windows ISOs for specific SKUs: it's all the same contents, but has a configuration file to control what edition/components gets installed. On Windows, it's ei.cfg. On Office, it's (I believe) installconfig.xml. As such, it's a 2KB .svf file to convert between them.

Are there good FOSS alternatives for Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper?
>>
>>102759774
I don't see it

I'm asking if it's safe since someone posted a program here called "O&O App Buster" and while I was checking it out it says that you should not have it in your system
>>
>>102759865
It's in the Gaming settings.
>>
>>102759862
Clonezilla, though Macrium Reflect does the job so well I don't care it's closed source.
>>
>>102759714
Thanks
>>
>>102759869
No option to disable there
>>
>>102759910
There should be, but if there isn't you can just uninstall it with AppBuster.
>>
>>102759927
Yeah dude, I know that lol, I was asking if it's safe, since it's part of Windows
>>
>>102759932
It's fine.

>>102759983
Well, nothing broke, so far...

Is there a way to get the .iso from that? I'm looking to use the .iso in a VM. I've tried to use ImgBurn to create a bootable .iso from a bootable USB made by Rufus, but I couldn't get it to boot properly on my VM (VMware).

You can use NTLite to slipstream the bypasses into an ISO IIRC among many other things.

No, 11 has better performance for games.

You can use OpenShell with the custom Start button to make the 11 start menu appear like the 10 one or earlier.
You can also set the 10 context menu to be default via some registry editing
>Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\
>Make a new key within called {86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}
>Within that key make a new key called InprocServer32
>Click on the (default) key within then close it without any changes by clicking OK
Then restart the computer and the 10 context menu should be default.

StartAllBack might have those. Tell your uncle to get on high doses of Fenbendazole.
>>
>>102759106
I wouldn't call it a scam but he's not very intelligent so it's insecure.

Thanks friends.

why does ltsc have better perf in some and worse in others?
>>
>>102745615
That's actually a good thing, you should let that have some more time in the oven. Right now it seems to have potential to break things, let everyone else stumble upon the jeet fuckups for the next month or so.

>I want to fix the start to be like Win10 and context menu uis for him
StartAllBack can do that, context menu too
>>
>>102758681
Maybe it only affects consumer versions of windows instead of server. The nvme driver date is inaccurate, there are changes made to the file likely related to directstorage for games.
>>
>>102760739
I guess you could use Office 2021 if you wanted.
