instead of fueling the shitstorm between GPU's I wanted to ask an honest question. I currently have Lian li TL fans but im wondering if the new MSI 120 MPG fans are better and even quiter. It would probably help too cause i have a project zero Mobo but im not sure
>>
on the advice of this thread, i bought the microcenter 7600x3d bundle

what cooling solution should i get for this thing? the heatsink was not included
>>

did you end up looking at the different mobo offers?
>>
>>102769414
Neither of those two companies prioritizes sound characteristics for their fans.
They are shopping around case fan OEMs in China & Taiwan, ordering a design that meets their performance & profitability targets.
MSI used to make case fans with liquid crystal polymer-based impellers, but I'm not sure if this is the fan you're referring to.
Lian Li also makes fans with LCP blades, these fans should have tighter manufacturing tolerances and have less annoying noise profiles.

so whatever Decibel level they claim to have should be ignored? my Lian li ones are pretty quiet so maybe its my case then, but I feel like at 1300RPM they shouldnt be louder than they should be right now

If your current fans are serviceable, I wouldn't replace them with MSI MPG fans.
I'd just tweak the case fan curves.

The TUF board bundle is fine. Strix A isn't worth the extra $50.
Strix E and Crosshair / Maximum are the high-end ROG motherboards, too expensive though.

I want to build a Linux gaming PC with an $800 budget. I don't need to run the latest games or high resolutions. AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D and an RX 6600 seems like they would be decent picks, but I'm not certain.

That CPU/GPU pairing is fine, here's a 5600X alternative (RX 7600)
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vcPRfy
If you go with the 5700X3D, you will need a better cooler like the Peerless Assasin.
>>
does anybody use soundcards or nah
I just think it looks kinda neat
>>
>>102769770
I'd personally go with a ryzen 7600 build instead, just because it'll be much easier to upgrade in the future. If you build a 5700x3d system now you'll be replacing GPU + CPU + ram + mobo and those parts you're getting now will have lost a lot of value.
>>
>>102769808
Maybe RDNA4 and Battlemage could change things at the $300~600 band, not counting on it.
The only way to offset the video card premium is to buy discounted parts for the other components.
>>
>>102769847
I use a xonar dgx, my old mobo had massive interference and when I got a new mobo later on I was like why not just keep using it.

No, they're counterproductive since Microsoft killed hardware-accelerated DSP at the kernel level in Vista. After that everything audio and 3D-directional sound effect related (EAX) had to be done in individual software libraries and handled by the CPU instead or more often since it was cheaper/easier just left out entirely.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaqUAmTtDwI

If you care about high quality audio just get an external USB DAC/Amp and be happy knowing your baseline SINAD resolution is still better than the Good Old Days that were more computationally sophisticated.

That's a China-only SKU to sell defective Navi32 chips that aren't good enough to be sold as 7700XT.
It will get a global release only if the Chinese market can't absorb all the chip inventory, like the 7900 GRE.

It doesn't change RDNA4's release schedule.
NVIDIA announcing the RTX 5070 alongside the 5080 and 5090 leads me to believe RX 8800 XT will also be announced early next year.

Is there anything I should do before replacing a GPU? Like do I need to reset something in BIOS or is just a simple plug in and turn on?
>>
>>102770313
If you're switching between GPU vendors, best to download DDU and run it to remove your previous display driver (select remove & system shut down).
If it's an upgrade from the same vendor, I think you're fine with just removing the card.
Set the display driver settings to default before replacing it though.

7900 xtx ive got on release and just works. honest to god, absolutely no issues. no crashing, no driver, no hardware, no game issues. its just werked. i even repasted it and put on a ton of thermal putty all over it as well. keeps chugging along.
you either got a lemon or if you came from nvidia, driver conflict issues.

use ddu to clean out everything. also, reset game profiles if you came from nvidia as well. a lot of games will do specific profile tweaks based on gpu in use.

yes its fucking retarded because Microsoft is openly hostile towards the AMD installer and tries to install its version of the drivers instead and that's where most people have issues.

I don't think Genshin is a problem. It just letting me know why my PC is turned on when I come back home.

Thinking about connecting PC to smart plug to turn it off in this case. I know it's a bit rude, but still better than rendering Genshin logging screen 12 hours straight.

They are not lowering the power consumption for RTX 5070, it's already rumored to be at around 250W.
The chip is going from N4P to 4NP, it's a refinement not a full node advancement to 3nm.
The die area for these chips is likely to be a bit larger (more power draw).

I bought the motherboard back in 2019 and I've gotten more life out of it than I care to admit (B450 Tomahawk). It's been almost 5 years... those screws are long gone. Plus according to an unboxing video I saw they were taped inside the manual. Something I usually do without since I'm a proficient enough builder. M.2 was also quite new at the time so I didn't bother looking for them in the first place.

ANYWAYS. It's honestly quite shocking such a motherboard is even relevant in this day and age. AM4 is definitely going down as one of the best sockets of all time.

First time buyers tempted to consider the RX 7700/7800 XT by AMD’s army of Advanced Marketing scammers (youtube, reddit, twitter, forums etc.) should be aware that AMD have a history of releasing benchmark busting, heavily marketed, sub standard products. Although Nvidia’s 4070 only offers comparable performance, it has a broader feature set (RT/DLSS 3.0) and offers far better game compatibility (drivers). PC gamers looking to join AMD’s “2%” GPU club (Steam stats: 5000/6000/7000 series combined mkt share) need to work on their critical thinking skills: Influencers (posing as reviewers) are paid handsomely to scam users into buying inferior products. Experienced gamers know all too well that high average fps are worthless when they are accompanied with stutters, random crashes, excessive noise and a limited feature set.

alright i'm about to run one more sanity check before i return this thing. since a couple weeks back my WD Blue 8TB has been making this horrific fucking noise, it's nearly constant now after an hour of being on. i've had it for a few months and it decided to start this shit out of nowhere. am i legitimately just too zoomer to realize this is how disks sound? is this how high capacity drives are? do they sound a certain way when they're almost full? i'm just unsure if this is how it is in which case i'll rework this setup or if i should just send it back due to potential data loss. either way i might just stick with solid state since this is near impossible to deal with in my room. the reason i've been hesitating is that i don't have anywhere to put my games and backups.

So between an AM4 build and a LGA 1700, which one will have more upgradability potential in the future?
Meaning I am planning on going with a pretty basic CPU for both but would like to keep my options open for the future if I potentially feel like I need more processing power.
The Intel side will be slightly more expensive if I want to get a mobo that can actually support higher end CPUs for the future but it's not by too much.
>>
>>102773232

>>
>>102773371
they're both dead sockets but AMD has been releasing refreshes and new stuff on AM4 and 1700 might be getting Bartlett lake but that's a rumour.
>>
>>102773371
>AM4 or 1700

>>102773409

>>102773413
I know they are dead, but AM5 is completely lacking in any sort of budget options so here we are. I am not asking for future proofing anyway, just upgradability. Meaning which one has the better selection of higher end CPUs if I want to upgrade my CPU later on.
>>
>>102773371
Neither of them offer much upgrade potential in the long term. You're looking at an X3D on AM4 and either 14th gen or Bartlett Lake (maybe) on 1700. Those are all decent options right now but probably won't be by the time you actually come to upgrade the system. Gun to my head I'd say AM4 but I'd heavily suggest saving up another $100 for an entry level AM5 build.
>>
>>102773371
>>102773445
LGA1700 gives you more raw power but you need an expensive motherboard to run, say, a 13900K
a 5950X can run on the cheapest boards but that will only match a 12900K in MT
i assume this is the type of thing you're asking about
>>
>>102773445
you can get the ASRock B650M HDV-M.2 for like 130 bucks and then get a 7500f from aliexpress for around 150. By the time you come to upgrade any AM4/1700 system the high end is not going to be high end anymore as I wouldn't consider the 5950X high end unless you have an absolute need for 16 cores. the 13th and 14th gen have degridation issues too so you'd be playing pot luck as to if the CPU would actually even work (spoiler, they're expecting all of the K-skus to die)
>>
>>102773460
Yes that's exactly it, thank you
>>
>>102773451

I really have no interest in ever going over 60fps 1080p for gaming and for everything else the top end AM4 CPUs will be good enough. So will probably go for either AM4 or lga 1700
>degradation
Well there goes lga 1700, saved myself some money as well I guess. I had no idea so thanks for pointing it out. Last thing I want is that by the time I want to upgrade to a stronger CPU, for all the secondhand market ones to be completely ruined.

I'm sorry, /g/entlemen, but how can you trust your precious hardware to come from aliexpress/alibaba? I personally avoid buying anything from there that's more complicated than toothpicks and screws and even then there's big chance to get shitty metal and toxic plastic. The situation is a bit better for a "more cores" upgrade but still not a great idea. You run into the same problem as with a gaming-focused path in that, if you leave it too long, the TotL chip will be outclassed by a modern 6/8-core. Plus anything that can use all those cores will likely benefit from DDR5. It's still better, because you can reuse the board, but nowhere near as good as the "2017-2021" AM4 upgrade path.

running 3600+ on DDR4 with 4 sticks isn't easy either
the memory controller and signal traces on the motherboard are designed for the typical speeds of that generation
DDR4 boards have worse signal integrity than DDR5 boards, because they didn't need to be that good

All they needed to do is making an ILM that encloses the entire CPU edges like the contact frames do instead of just the middle side parts. Old coolers should still be compatible this way and the pressure of the ILM would be balanced even. I swear, Intel WANTS to die. They should be hyper focused on fixing all the shit they fucked up since gen13, instead they repeat old mistakes with a new socket, make said new socket shortlived (chances are high it will be Arrow Lake only) and release their new CPU with potentially worse perfomance than fucking gen14. Going for efficiency was the best they can do, but at least make it competitive to Zen5 for fucks sake. Releasing a beta test CPU in a situation where you need to damagecontrol is the worst thing to do.

>running 3600+ on DDR4 with 4 sticks isn't easy either
That's due to the memory controller, not the board's memory topology.
The fact that you're stuck at sub 4000MT/s shows it.

>the memory controller and signal traces on the motherboard are designed for the typical speeds of that generation
The CPU's IMC only guarantees speeds that are disclosed on the product spec sheets.
Board manufacturers never guarantee the OC specs on their board are achievable on an individual basis, that's why those speeds are advertised as OC.
There's a reason why memory overclockers buy two DIMM slot boards.

Manufacturers like ASUS have also been modifying the memory signal pathways and the retention pin to reduce the overclocking performance gap between a 4 DIMM slot and a 2 DIMM slot board.

This is real physics. Stay in your ignorant DDR4DIMM lane.

My build suggestion (£1284.41): https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/kbDDrv
The 7900(X) has the best high perf/$ for game development in your country right unless you can get a good deal on a 14700K/KF.
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-9-9950x/10.html
Went with Nvidia on the GPU as I don't know if your dev needs could use/require CUDA, if not the 7900 GRE is also viable.
Went with a 2x16GB DDR5 Kit, but if your dev needs require it here's the cheapest good 2x32GB Kit as well (£163):

Looking to upgrade my production PC. I mainly run After Effects and some other Adobe programs. I'm not too fuzzy about encoding time, but currently the preview generation time on After Effects feels very slow.
Currently have a 3700x and a 1080ti with 32GB RAM and a cheap ~500MB/s SSD.
Should I just scrap it all and do a full upgrade? Or can I get away with a better GPU or faster SSD?
>>
>>102776547
A faster CPU GPU and drive would help but it all depends on the workload, if AE uses CUDA to render out then upgrade your GPU if it's CPU bound then get a 5900X and if it's I/O then get a new SSD
>>
>>102776514
Tell me you are testing outside the case, first.
Reseat the RAM, & CPU.
Make sure ALL of the data/power cables are firmly connected on the board and to the PSU (ESPECIALLY THE 12V ATX & EPS CONNECTORS)
Clear CMOS
Retry.

On idle I mean. Im aware that 7800x3d is pretty damn efficient at load. But, as most people on this site Im usually playing less videogames and are instead more often busy with shitposting. No reason to get x3d when Im playing way less these days.

How much of a dumbass would I be if I just rawdogged a 4080 super with my current setup. I wanted to upgrade this setup down the line anyway. Otherwise I might just go for new CPU ram and mobo and keep my current GPU.

Most of it is a Windows problem rather than an OLED monitor problem
I don't want to be using HDR permanently but when it's disabled, 24h2 has a bug where you can't toggle it with a shortcut if you want to use auto color management
It's difficult to get used to the font rendering, although it's not as bad as I thought it's still not amazing
There's a weird horizontal band effect when scrolling up and down, I don't know if it's because of the angle of the monitor
There's some coil whine while turned off because it's one of those monitors with a power supply on the back rather than separate
Half of the time it just seems to look too fucking dark. Half the time it's not.
HDR brought me extra autism because I seriously don't know how to set up this thing best. Nobody told me there were two modes (True Black 400 vs Peak 1000 nits)
If I want some nvidia features I have to disable DSC which brings down the panel from 360hz to 240hz, but the kicker is that at 240hz it looks like dogshit for some reason, so it has to be turned down to 120hz
But for fucks sake this looks so goddamn good when it's right

It's a bit of a misconception that Intel has better idle draw. Comes from reporting differences between the manufacturers - AMD shows the whole CPU while Intel separates the components. When you test the whole system at the wall they're very close. There's maybe a kernel of truth to it if both CPUs were locked at minimum frequency/voltage - then the IO die, with its older node, would give Ryzen a higher floor but these days the cores are always adjusting clocks dynamically so it comes out as a wash.

I am planing to buy a decent gaming + datascience(not hardcore though, i will generaly use R, python etc with big datastets) PC.
My budget is 900-1000~ $ or 31-34.5k Turkish liras
You can use this sites to compare prices

https://www.cimri.com/

For know i am cosidering to buy these parts

Gigabyte RTX 4060 TI Gaming OC GV-N406TGAMING OC-8GD 128 Bit GDDR6 8 GB

and 5600x or 7600x + 32 gb ddr 4 ram

any recs? One anon recommend me to buy 3070 but they are ridiculously expensive here compared to 4060s
>>
>>102777266
Compare multicore workload temperature difference with HT/SMT on & off.
Hyperthreading and SMT were developed at a time when adding more physical compute cores to a chip was too costly.
There are also security vulnerabilities present with these features.
>>
>>102776547
Honestly anon if you can upgrade everything, you should. Double your ram to 64gb (still won't be enough for After Effects, but WAY better than 32bg), upgrade your CPU to a 5900x/5950x/5900xt, and upgrade your GPU to an RTX 3060 or better, with at least 12gb of vram. IMO that would be a noticeable upgrade and could be reasonable without having to go for a completely new build.

The boomer reviewer @ Guru3D doesn't even have the decency to post his measurement methodology nor the test system specs for all those systems' idle readings.
He also stopped "updating" that chart after he was done with his bullshit agenda of misrepresenting reality.

>>

Because it was costly to implement, dumb fuck.
Server CPUs had at most quad cores when HT was implemented.

Done, but still the same result. Both the cpu and dram lights flash for a second and then turn off, but I can't power the pc on. When reseating the cpu I checked and there was no visible damage done to the pins. The mobo has the 2 CLRCMOS pins and I've just held a screwdriver between them for a couple of seconds. It also has a flash BIOS button, so I pressed it just in case
