I genuinely can't wrap my head around the fact that there are people out there who enjoy management positions, just thinking about it feels me with pure dread, non stop meetings, a lot of stress, long ass hours... Hell no.

These are the kind of people who just like to talk endlessly and never stfu.

I made like $60k after graduating college and felt pretty rich... But that was 15 years ago

I've been unemployed for almost 2 years and will start working again soon. kinda nervous since i quit stimulants and will have to raw dog the new job. i hope it's not too hard to find motivation when i start. every day i say i will brush up on my new tech stack and then i do fuck all.

I guess it depends, I've worked at USPS, FedEX and Amazon warehouse. As long as they allowed headphones I didn't mind, shifts flew by quick. Amazon didn't allow earphones and it sucked way more than the other wagie jobs. Mindlessly moving boxes as a job was not bad imo, retail and working with customers is a million times worse.

Appeals to the retards perhaps who sing along to that absolute dog shit music, it feels like psychological torture, it is the same shitty songs again and again every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. All of this while working in one of the physically most uncomfortable and unfulfilling roles possible. I have a degree with a decent grade, I have a good depth of knowledge regarding business and accounting, ask anyone from my co-workers at my work to the professors and teachers that I did not get along with and they would tell you that I am obviously intelligent, yet the only work around here is shitty fucking warehouse jobs. The only way out I feel is the learn to program so that I can build my own marketplace/data/software company.

I had a melty when after I started the day at 0800 with only my standup on my schedule to spending from 0900 to 1600 in calls, a VP who was in MANY OF THOSE SAME CALLS asked at 1601 why I hadn't assigned tickets from those calls and gotten time estimates from my guys yet. Luckily he realized as I started my rant that if he got me going he was going to pay overtime (I'm a consultant) for me to tell him he's an idiot, so he interrupted with a "oh right, you were in calls all day, my bad. talk to you tomorrow".

Non-technical middle manager, I've been tasked by upper management to monitor the number of PRs, Jira comments, and tasks completed by the devs each sprint, and to take action if any engineer appears to be underperforming (ideal metrics are 1 PR per week, 1 jira comment per week and 1 task completed per week)
How should I approach this? Should I call a meeting with each dev and address the issue of not submitting enough PRs? I'm not very technical, so I'm concerned about how to handle this without getting negative pushback from them...
I swear to God this isn't bait.
2 devs so far chewed my ass saying these metrics make no sense.
How can I explain to my manager these metrics make no sense?
>>
I would kill every single one of you with my bare hands if it would grant me a Green Card.

My gym is about 30 seconds walk from work which helps, I keep rest periods to 60 seconds tops (this doesn't work on heavy day unfort), I do a PPL program so don't need a dozen different exercises for each body part, can get it done in 45mins.

I also save cardio and mobility for when I get home which would absolutely blow the schedule out if I tried fit it into work hours.
>>
>>103007394
lmao those metrics make no sense
>>
>>103007426

I am working on a project, if you are a full stack developer I would love to talk to you and I would happily to offer equity in my company and cash if you were to help me. I have done the research, I understand the business, the customers, I have formed a business strategy that I am confident with, the only issue is my current partner who oversees the technical side of the project is taking far too long to complete things which should be relatively straight forward, he insists that he understands what he is doing, I have given very clear instructions, but it seems he is having trouble with the workload and implementing some of the ideas, and this rough patch has hurt his motivation I think. I think an extra pair of competent hands and some fresh eyes would be invaluable right now. I am attempting to learn the technicals to help him or develop some of it myself, but I can't do everything myself and I think it will be a while before I am sufficiently competent. Please let me know if you are able and willing to lend a hand, I will fill you in privately about our project if you provide me some form of contact, ideally on discord.
>>
>>103007394
those metrics are arbitrary, but not high

you need to be technical to measure performance. and know if a dev is taking too long on something than they should.

those 2 devs who said they make no sense, as in they are too high, are probably low performers imo. if they mean they are arbitrary, they are correct.

how are you a manager if you can't code?
>>
>>103007508
drop an email

I joined a startup months ago as a dev. got offered CTO soon after as the previous guy was just like your guy. rn I am heading development and turned things around, launching soon. can lend a hand on the side.
>>
>>103007394
the metrics make no sense, maybe be more intentional on grooming and focus on making sure if possible that work is broken down such that that's the minimum.
Like what is the error they are correcting for?
I'd portray it as a way to make sure
"we are breaking down stories such that we are able to complete one in a week on that format" and encourage devs to figure out ways to break them down in grooming?
being a manager seems like hell
>>
>>103007472
I have zero context buddy, but I can tell you that software productivity is a very complex topic so I suggest you read a book about it
You should measure (non-retarded) goals like implementing a certain functionality instead, assuming you can estimate of course

Laughing my ass off at all you lazy WFH saying 1 PR 1 comment and 1 task complete per week is arbitrary and can't be used to judge underperformers
it absolutely can
us folks form the unemployed thread would be willing to complete 10 PRs 10 comments and 10 tasks per week if it meant we got the job, even if it was total bullshit for show shit made just to please middle managers
>>
>>103007394
You work with your engineers and make them understand that it's you (together) against the managers and you figure out how to make it work.

Bosses will fuck you over for any (or no) reason. Underlings will fight like lions for you if you treat them right. Remember that.
>>
>>103007707
I finish around 6-8 tasks per sprint and the equivalent number of PRs, how is 1 even questionable
>>
>>103007472
you should ask your devs for feedback, not here.

in the end, a non-technical is never going to be able to accurately judge the performance. you need to get them to give you feedback on each other. or if you really need to, get them to agree on a number of points for each task or something.

I just found out that my advisor wrongly suggested that I was finished with some of the requirements and I'll have to finish school next fall instead of this semester (I go to a very small school). Me? I have to sit down, think things through, and fight the spirits of the computer.

I am not saying I want to be a manager, I would kill myself if I had to attend that many meetings. But dumb people who get LE LONELY if they don't talk will find it much easier, because they are literally wired for that.

I am constantly underperforming. I take forever to do my tickets. I'm trying so hard to keep up, but I'm too retarded. Actually last sprint was the first sprint I ever completed all my tickets on time.
I'm on 2 different projects, and I'm struggling so hard with switching between the 2 especially since one of them has me doing things I have never done before.
I don't even know what questions I need to ask most of the time. And when I do ask I feel like my lead dev is too technical. I end up asking another junior who recently had to do similar tickets for help and that actually helps a lot more. Usually I just end up staring at other repos and asking chatgpt to explain concepts to me.
It's over for me. I can see it in the quality of my work too. I just start rushing shit out so I can complete it on time. I'm stressing out so bad.
>>

>Actually last sprint was the first sprint I ever completed all my tickets on time.

Wtf? I make 65k/year and I'm far from being "rich". And it's Portugal by the way, pretty much the cheapest country in Europe. With 60k/year you can barely afford a fucking T1, not to mention you will never buy a house because it is almost impossible nowadays.
That's pretty much the reason I'm trying to relocate to the US. Salary in Europe sucks massive cocks.
By the way, any eurocuck here who moved to the US to work? Was it too hard to get a job? How "hard" is the job compared to Europe?
>>
>>103008457
>>103008491
>>103008557
I just started around 4 months ago. The first couple months I actually almost quit, but I stuck with it because I had nothing else.
I was starting to kind of get used to it and I finally met my deadline for once last sprint, but now it's just back to not knowing shit and being thrown in to the fire.
I already mentioned I need more guidance to my scum master/manager and lead devs, but no one really has time to help me except the other junior I mentioned and I think he's also stressing out. I don't wanna bother him too much either, so I usually just type my questions in the team chat, but I honestly don't understand wtf they're saying.
And a lot of times it seems that I'm actually supposed to be doing something else and my tickets need to be adjusted, but I don't know how I'm supposed to know that initially especially when I am doing stuff I've never done before.
>>
>>103008630
The best way to transfer is to get an L1 visa and have the company apply for a Green Card the moment you get transferred. Portugal and Spain should have a lot of USA multinational due to their position. Going there with the H1B visa is nearly impossible.

If you have a conscience it probably eats at you because you're ruining the careers and potentially lives of everyone who reports to you, but if you don't give a shit and are really good at ass-kissing, you can just blame every one of your failures on your reports and burn through them, so long as you don't do it noticeably too quickly.

I knew this is being tracked to measure developer "performance". With this system the rational dev is incentivized to write slop code as fast as possible and to accrue technical debt (not my problem). Also it is best to slow down your peers as much as possible by withholding information, giving wrong information and being extremely pedantic in code reviews and requesting changes multiple times, boosting your performance relative to them. It's absolute bullshit but the incentive alignments are completely messed up on every level of the company.
>>
>>103013187
rational devs are already managers, also, while bruteforcing works to some degree it is better to gather allies and convince others to gang up on the weak in a stack ranking environment. Also, this is probably expected by mgms and part of the unwritten requirements what does 'senior' mean in your title

I've been slowly pushed towards this kind of job even if I always stated that I don't want it. Now here I am, still managing my team long after the old colleagues/bosses have left the department.
The only thing that's different now is that I enjoy ruining the days of non-technical people in the corporation. It gets me hard knowing that paper shufflers are forced to interact with me and my blunt takes. They hate it. The more blunt and direct I am, the harder their job is, because their whole existence depends on stuff moving very slowly. Calling them out on their bullshit is also something that I enjoy a lot, they never seem to expect it and there is nothing they can do about it. All they can do is to lower their heads, to stop using their laptop cameras during the next meetings and to lower their tone with me during further meetings.
All these things are happening from my home. It's a decent life if you need a lot of money, not very spiritually fulfilling, but definitely worth it if you get high on power-tripping on retards whose lives depend on bullshitting their way out of anything and on passing responsibility to others.

you americucks/eurocucks fighting over being two sides of the same coin are fucking pathetic.

you both have:
- niggers
- high taxes (no, cletus, 30% income tax isn't low)
- high COL cities with shared cuckboxes
- either a 1 hour train ride or a 1 hour commute
- either long waitlists in public healthcare or extortionate private healthcare costs (yes, both of you)
- no privacy, and the government up your ass

euromoors also have:
- sales tax on top of everything
- no AC, and less space to live in

amerimutts also have:
- goyslop and groceries made out of onions plastics
- $1M cardboard houses

you should both kill yourselves back toreddit and let people in the second world live in peace

I have been to the doctor many times and if the physical examination shows there might be something that needs more than just rest and OTC painkillers, I've always gotten more in-depth examinations issued.

What, you WANT stronger drugs and more hassle for something that goes away with some rest/time? You know that less medication (especially stronger painkillers) the better right? You're not supposed to pop pills if you can avoid it.
Sounds to me like you had a RSI, the doctor ruled out anything more serious with a physical, and you got mad because you expected to get strong painkillers instead of getting told to deal with it for a while until it goes away.

You can see the effect of over-medicating in the US, everyone there is on Ritalin, SSRIs, stimulants, and/or something else (often multiple at the same time) because doctors give them out like candy which easily creates addictions.

any remote position you see on linkedin or indeed gets applied for by about a hundred people who could probably do the job, probably a few hundred unqualified people, and a few thousand indian or web scraper AI bot sent trash applications. any job where applying is easy as pressing a couple of buttons may as well not be appliable to at all, because in the end the hiring people will be looking over half of linkedin to find their man

any on-site or hybrid position has probably 1/5th or 1/10th of these numbers. except the indian-based and web scraper applications. those remain a constant. the job being on-site in texas is no deterrent for a man living in india.

to answer your question: it might help to get really creative around what jobs you apply for, ie. look for places that aren't even explicitly hiring, or their hiring portal is essentially hidden from scrapers. that's how i got my job. either that or just become a spammer like many others and go for the "0.01% chance times million" strat.

>I'm tired of all of the humiliation rituals, I just want to work
the bad news is that the humiliation rituals are still on the menu for the foreseeable future. however i think there will eventually be some kind of regulated system to handle hiring, that allows individual merit to shine a bit more and allows spam to shine a lot less. companies feel just fine humiliating, ghosting and what have you with applicants, but they themselves feel the sting of the system they've created and actually can't efficiently find good help anymore because of all the spam and the application optimization (lying, gaming)
>>
>>103014388
The real question is, why does it cost $50,000 to fix a broken leg?
It might take a doctor 1 to 2 hours at most. At a really high pay of $100/hour (how much do YOU get paid per hour?) this would only be $200.
How much does the bandaging cost? $10 retail price, cheaper if bought in bulk?
Where do the other $49,790 go??

If a place like Potsdam existed in the US, a single room apartment would cost several dozen millions of dollars and Americans would slave away their entire lives just to be allowed to live on its streets.

The average European city outside of maybe the Paris and London ghettos would be considered Shangri-La in the US, with prices to match.

to be honest as a euro, i saw a lot of inherent value in being european in terms of the social security and better societal cohesion, but nowadays, at least in my country, the government is dead set on being like the US in every regard except having the money, the resources or the opportunities. i have some schizo theories how this will pan out in the next decade
>recession in both america and europe
>european countries do what they do best, which is refusing to accept what is happening and trying to regulate out of it like "as per new law, we are no longer in a recession" which just makes the economy more retarded
>try to import more workforce to make up for the aging populace, but no one ambitious wants to live in europe anymore so they just get people who are either incompetent or want to coast
>economy flounders even more
meanwhile
>the US recovers from the recession on account of actually being somewhat competent at handling them, and due to good resources, industry, etc.
>sees europe with a massive number of young professionals who are fed up with their retarded gerontocratic governments
>takes a huge number of them in
>europe's economy shits itself even more because of loss of labor force, which means more retarded moves by the government, which means more ill-advised immigration, which means more emigration to the states
>feedback loop until europe is a desolate labor camp to keep old people alive, and the US is becomes the least shit country to live on earth

there is a lot of commonality in how euro countries handle their economies, their demographics, and so on. every eu country has a growing population of old people and no plan how to handle that aside from "muh immigration" and "make young people work harder", even if there are no actual jobs because these countries have accidentally optimized themselves out of being useful to anyone else. in the end, the reigning sentiment among the leaders in these countries is confusion and indifference, like they don't know what the fuck they're doing, and even if they did, they wouldn't care.

the US is pretty similar to europe in terms of demographics but they've been minmaxing their industry and economy for the past 100 years. even if you stop considering that US just has a high GDP, the country also has actual wealth like oil, specialist industries, R&D, a highly talented and motivated labor force, and a bunch of people running the economy who generally understand what makes it tick. if you're american you might think your country's leadership is retarded, but consider that they're keeping the recession in check by threading the needle with interest rates while securing as much real wealth as possible in time for the recession, while at least my government thinks that they can fix every issue if they just shuffle numbers around hard enough

if you're familiar with the suicidal ideation scale it basically just takes away 1 point (out of ten) off it for me, just enough for me to not hit the planning stage quite as often, but it's not like what people say that it makes you a completely different person or whatever
wouldn't recommend it if you're not suicidal mostly because it's annoying to have another thing to think about in your routine and discontinuation symptoms are ass

as for therapy it's literally meant for the shit you're talking about, therapy is a meme for real mental illnesses but for the average normalfag "ahhh work is tiresome" stuff it can be pretty nice to just have someone that can listen to your rants
I think it was worth it for me even though it doesn't take care of my mental issues because it takes a huge load off what I end up ranting to my gf/family/friends, but otherwise I'd say skip it

any process is better than no process
you NEED someone whose job is to take screaming from stakeholders and convert it into prioritized tasks which respect the devs time commitment
whether that is a scrummaster or whoever's responsible for writing the project docs in waterfall doesn't matter, you just need someone in-between devs and randos otherwise you end up with everyone from every team screaming at tech until they find the weakest link who will accept their "super urgent task guys!!" and burn themselves out doing it

Do the bare minimum at your current job to make sure it's still an option if your potential new job doesn't pan out. When they ask, tell whoever is assigning you work that it's an unrealistic deadline for X, Y, and Z. They're probably just a retard who doesn't know how to set realistic expectations with their boss so they hand those expectations to you. These people need reality explained to them so they can parrot to the higher ups that it can't be built that fast. Be sure to ask them what happens if it's not done by X date because it will cause a short circuit in their monkey brain and buy you time
>>
>>103015125
based on the image you used in your post, i assume you are too retarded to understand these things. but i will spell it out for any other posters

typically those immigrants are a net positive for the US. the US has the privilege and the sense to pick the best and the brightest. canada and many euro countries don't have that privilege, because these countries are not typically anyone's first choice if they actually want to work hard, and nowadays they also have very little scrutiny over who they bring in. it turns out importing 500,000 deliverymen doesn't drive your country's economy to actually make some cool shit that other countries might want to buy, and instead it just impoverishes it further and drives the skill labor to leave for somewhere that doesn't tax them to shit. and because these countries are run by fucking idiots, they STILL don't get what the issue is and continue to double down on this plan. they just look at the age pyramid and say "need more young people" and that's the extent of their thought process

The absolute agreeableness for any task assigned, and then the absolute underdelivery of solutions.
