there is no way modern games require you to have above 16gb

Lexar NM620 (Gen 3) for 105eur

Samsung 990 Pro / Crucial T500 for 150eur
>>
>>103010805
There are already games that suggest 32GB RAM

Main reason is PS5 ports will use the extra RAM to emulate swapping that's handled by the super-fast SSD on consoles

Also, multi-tasking

Between my server and desktop I will eventually employ 15 if the cheap shit thermalright fans
9 will run 24/7, 6 will be intermittent use.
I'm a interested into how long it takes for one to fail.

I'm honestly confident that the leds or electronics will fail before the bearing, I've never had a fan that was bought separately fail or get super noisy, even basic sleeve bearing fans after 8+ years of mixed RPM use.

Hey anons, I'm in the market right now to upgrade my GPU from my 1060 6gb, and I'm pretty torn between the 4060 or the 3060 12gb.

For some context, I bought the 1060 in 2018 for my original system built in 2012, and last year I finally built a whole new system but moved the 1060 into it. So from a GPU perspective, it's been 6 years.

I'm still on 1080p and plan to remain that way for at least a few more years because my kids are little and I want to wait until they stop breaking everything to upgrade to a 4k OLED TV. So I'm mainly looking for the best 1080p card that can run games best for the next ~5 years.

I'm on the fence because the main problem I'm facing right now with these newer games is VRAM. 6gb just is not enough to run these newer titles with everything cranked. So I'm wondering if I should go with the older generation with more VRAM, or if I would be better off with the performance improvements of the newer 4000 series with only 8gb. They're both $300.

Appreciate any and all advice!

if u insist on the 4060 vs 3060 option. you should know, you will rarely get to use full of the 12gb vram of 3060 at 1080p gaming (that u will may have to turn down the graphic options for performance in demanding games anyway)
Both have DLSS but the 4060 has access to framegen, so it would have better time running newer, demanding games

I just have a fixed rule of how much I will spend on a pc/GPU and it has to be at least twice as fast as I what I already have and there has to be a new game that I want to play that requires it, given recent releases have been pretty shitty I haven't been considering buying a new one
>>
>>103011405
Really need more info, depends on the rest of your setup.

Ultimately everything depends on target resolution and framerate. Personally I do not think there's any benefit at all past 1440p no matter what distance you're sitting at from the screen, so it depends on if you're happy with your performance or not.

>>

1080p 60FPS. I hardly even play games anymore, and when I do it's the same old shit (picrel)
But I'm itching to buy shit. Maybe I'll get a 1440p 144hz display IF I ever do upgrade just to justify it.
>>
>>103011482
Resolution kinda isn't a big deal anymore due to dlss and fsr, since you can just play "4K" performance with a fairly weak GPU and get about the same performance as 1080 native, and it looks a lot better than trying to use the wrong res for the monitor
>>
>>103011482
If you don't need the upgrade, just keep waiting.
The parts will get better.

Wait for the game then buy the GPU for that game.
The 6gb 1060 is still a decent GPU.
For example, the 1060 has 2x the fps of a steamdeck, but the 4060 has 2x the fps of a 1060 so it won't disappoint you.
Also I would buy a new 1080p 180hz monitor instead of a new GPU if your monitor is 60fps.
If you have a VRR monitor, you could do a little bit of autism and use a frame limiter in some games and even if the game runs at a low FPS, it feels very smooth if you limit it correctly. When you get the 4060, it will give you more FPS, which is will increase smoothness, but in my opinion it just hides fact not every frame has an equal frame time (so you might rotate your camera in some AAA game, and you might notice the fps stutters a little bit because obviously more / less things being rendered causes the FPS to change).
Of course the 1060 can't do much, like to run cyberpunk you need to use mostly low settings + FSR to reach 60fps (but the steamdeck only gets like 30fps if you are lucky).

- download rufus
- connect usb, 8 gb or larger.
- select the correct usb on rufus
- select uefi
- once complete, you have a bootable pendrive
- disconnect all the disks other than your bootable linux pendrive and your target disk for loonix.
- In bios, disable fastboot and secure boot.
- Boot from the pendrive by selecting your pendrive.
- Hit next, next and wait for it to complete. While installing, just make sure that you are installing to the correct disk.
- disconnect the pendrive and it will boot from loonix.

>Samsung is trying to buy Intel
I've bought only intel cpus since Prescott. Could call me a fan boy even though I'm in my 30's. It's kind of a melancholic feeling that the company that invented the microchip, easily in the top 5 the most humanity changing inventions in the last 2 million years alongside things like the plow and the combustion engine, may be going insolvent soon. The father of the modern age is about to be traded and bought like it's just another company in the gutter.

It's not like I'm a mindless consumer though, I bought 11th gen in spite of zen 3 being out, I knew it was inferior but I value platform stability over everything, and I trusted intel more than amd. Trusted. It's all gone now. 13th, 14th, and 15th gen are dumpster fires, and it hurts me but I'm almost definitely going for a 9950x3d + Blackwell build next year since my machine is starting to show its age at last.

Rest in peace, Intel. I held out hope for years that you could pull another Core 2 Duo out of your hat like a magician, but it's obviously not going to happen. Your corporate culture has degraded beyond what can be repaired without vast restructuring, all my friends who work at intel have only bad things to say about Pat and the company. It's over.

M-Die 3Gb chips are easier to clock high than A-Die 2Gb chips. 2x16GB A-Die make sense if you want something like DDR5-6000 C28 or lower, otherwise 2x24GB M-Die is better. Going dual rank 2x32GB or God forbid single rank 4x16GB is mental retardation.

Just 9 days. Zen 5 was cheaper than Zen 4 across the line. Lisa was planning to launch 9800X3D with similar price cut so worst case scenario if she decides to milk because Arrow Turd shitted and flopped it just won't get the price cut and release at 7800X3D MSRP.
Intel and Radeon are a meme at this point. AMD and Nvidia might as well get a true monopoly on CPUs and GPUs respectively and it wouldn't affect prices one bit.

Uhh? Only MSI said anything about CUDIMM support on X870 and that's in compat mode without clock driver support. I don't think CUDIMM is coming to AMD until AM6 or X970. I'd rather already see CAMM2 at that point in time.
>>
>>103013362
>I'm going to wait for 9800X3D if the price is going to be ok
It's going to be like €500 which is, IMO, not okay but the bastards have us over a barrel with the lack of competition in this segment.

>Heard this one before, I want to consider nvidia but I'm also a Loonix user...
Fair enough. As I understand it getting the popular ML software to run on AMD is a lot easier on Linux so it might well be the right choice.

>What [PSU] would you suggest?
PSUs are commodities so you're mostly just looking for the cheapest model with the performance/quality you need. That depends on local pricing on the day so I can only offer general advice - you want something with high-tier internals in the 750W+ region. If you're wedded to Seasonic then the model to get is the Focus GX (ATX3) but, again, there's loads of competition in this segment.
Check out HWbusters (link in the OP) and the old Cultists tier list for models not covered. Beware that it hasn't been updated in a year so newer models won't be there FWIW.
If you let us know your country, and it has a PCPP link, we could take a look for you.

He said that Intel doesn't bin the IMC on Alder Lake because he had a particularly good 12600K and particularly bad 12900K, conclusion based on an amazing sample size of 2. Data gathered by overclock.net users clearly showed Intel did in fact bin the IMC for i9s.
I don't know if it's true because no one ever tested it but he also claimed some really esoteric stuff like mounting pressure affecting memory stability beyond thermal implications of bad/good mount. ADL and RPL are just really fickle with DDR5 at frequency, it don't see why he would attribute its stochastic nature to mounting pressure. I have never noticed a difference between different coolers and a delidded 13900K which affects the mounting pressure a lot because you reduce the distance between the die and IHS by removing the glue and replacing indium solder with liquid metal. With or without Thermalright contact frame.

a 10c drop on your GPU means it boosts faster
a 10c drop on your nvme means it writes faster for a longer sustained period
a 10c drop makes your psu more efficient
You're basically losing perf by using the wrong case
>>
>>103013983
We're at the bleeding edge here with these 8GT/s CUDIMMs so it's hard to say exactly what will happen. Maybe you get lucky(?) and it all works, maybe you need to write timings manually, maybe it's completely unstable above 6000. Only way to find out is to try it. FWIW the scaling numbers posted are slightly unrealistic in that most of the time you're bottlenecked by the GPU - don't expect a straight 30% FPS bump from copying Buildzoid's EZ-timings.

So what's the rationale behind AIOs being near perfect with reliability with zero maintenance while a custom loop needs vigorous yearly maintenance?

AIOs are mixed metal loops and are apparently "fine" for years with a glycol based coolant, custom loops are usually full copper and it's easy enough to get coolant but are still problematic according to the internet.

Alright then. Budget is budget.

>Does the thing about 7800XT being better on native and raster performance matter as much as DLSS?
DLSS is generally agreed to be the best upscaler but it's fundamentally subjective as to whether you're happy with its tradeoffs. I don't play AAA games so I can't give you an informed opinion - you should check out some comparison videos.
The 4070 is damned close to the 7800XT in terms of raw raster as well so it should be the default choice with price equality. The exceptions being if you know a) you don't want its features or b) you need 16GB of VRAM.

>>
>>103014925
I do have speakers. The headset will be mainly for discord and to reduice noise at night
>>
>>103014869
For the price of a good headset or less you are better served with a quality pair of headphones and a discrete studio mic on a boom. Much better sound and recording quality. If you must have an all-in-one solution your best bet is probably the Sennehiser/Drop + EPOS PC38X
https://www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/drop/sennheiser-epos-pc38x
>>
>>103014869
I'll say the same thing to everyone else that asks about headphones/headsets
If you can afford to use open back headphones, buy a Samson SR850. They're cheap, sound good and will break in 2-3 years.
Pair this with a cheap boom arm desk mic (if you can afford to clamp it somewhere) which should also only be 20-30. If you don't like the SR850's sound signature (which is a possibility), you can use it to help you decide a different choice in the future, if you want less bass, something like the MDR7506 might be a good choice.

I've had four people buy the SR850 off my suggestion and all of them liked it. I'm currently on my fourth pair about to buy my fifth

That's good. Means you don't have to be too concerned about audio quality. If you were, I'd say to get one from a proper HiFi company (I'm fond of Beyer) and that might still be a fine option if you've got the budget. OTOH, if it's going to be mostly voice you can get away with something cheaper. IIRC the HyperX Cloud 3 was the go-to /hpg/ recc for the frequent "gamer headset request" posts.

Why have computers stayed in the one-sided-PCB prison for so long?
Wouldn't you be able to drive RAM faster if you just put the ram slots directly on the other side of the PCB from the CPU for minimum distance and interference from other traces?

>>103014989
While I do appreciate your recommendations and will check the SR850, I think studio headphones and mic go beyond my needs. I'll mainly use the headset for gaming and discord calls with my friends, nothing fancy.

>The 4070 is damned close to the 7800XT in terms of raw raster as well so it should be the default choice with price equality.
The only doubt I'm having about the 4070 other than whether DLSS is needed is that the model I'm looking at is the MSI Ventus 2X E1 OC.
Those 2x Ventus coolers are supposedly bad or something.

>The exceptions being if you know a) you don't want its features or b) you need 16GB of VRAM.
I don't play many AAA games and not really interested in RT, but my reasoning going into this is that the Nvidia card's features are nice to have if I ever need them.

>Those 2x Ventus coolers are supposedly bad or something.
They are. I'd prefer just about anything else over a Ventus but they are cheap and the card only pulls 200W so it doesn't need a huge cooler. If there's a Dual or an XLR8 or something for similar money I'd take that. If it's like $50 difference just take the Ventus. Maybe undervolt it if the noise is too much.

>the Nvidia card's features are nice to have if I ever need them
Yes exactly. For $20 it's very reasonable. Unless, ofc, you want the VRAM. Thing is, the games that need >12GB are usually those that also need DLSS so it's not quite clear-cut.

Brighter in non-white colors and a wider color gamut. Also most QD-OLEDs look sharper as they come default with a glossy finish while regular OLEDs are default Matte which gives the picture a hazy look. If you are on a budget and the OLED is $100/150 or more dollars cheaper I'd consider it otherwise QD-OLED is generally the better option. Keep in mind QD-OLEDs don't have a polarizer meaning that in bright environments where you can't control ambient direct lighting by dimming lights or curtians/shades from rear windows the blacks will become lifted with a purple tinge (not noticeable with content).

OLED is perfectly fine in well light rooms, the only reason it's called out is due to QD-OLED having a glossy coating which r reflects light.
>>
>>103016868
What many overlook when it comes to brightness especially with QD-OLED is not only are every component color other than white brighter and purer but that saturation and expanded gamut allows images to be perceived as brighter than they would be by nominal nits measures alone vs. LCD according to the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch Effect. For example in picrel all the colors are exactly the same luminescence but our eyes see the Red & Magenta as being brighter.

>>103016936
I realized this on lcd running a sub 100% srgb gamut display and having to crank up color saturation just to get any color back and more saturated color = more percieved brightness even if there is no more direct light
