If you don't have everything properly tight you can mess up functionality so you can't even get away with it. Plus the instructions aren't always as clear due to bad printing but you can just find the lego instructions online and use them, which I often did. So yeah, maybe start with a smaller set first? It is good but I wouldn't say it was a pain free build, especially considering you can have missing parts too which halt the build unless you have spares. Idk about that set but the parts can sometimes not come organised either, so it's surfing through 1500+ pieces as you build.For the price, hard to go wrong. But for a kid, eh idk
