I have a problem with Git. Is this the right thread for that? If not, someone please tell me where I can ask this. The issue I'm having is that I copied my project over to my laptop using a thumbdrive. My project files are fine, but the git repositories I took with them are not. Every action I can think of to take with the git repository results in a >fatal: Invalid path 'C:/Users/[desktop username]': No such file or directoryHow can I fix this? (No, config core.protectNTFS did not work, it ALSO resulted in the same error.)>>103154391Jokes aside, I do honestly miss this era. Extensions should interface into the browser, not the browser powering those extensions.>>103154374Portability depends on the program itself. Any program that relies on the registry will not be portable, and that is unfortunately a LOT of programs. Most programs, if they are portable, either come in a zip file or some other compressed format, and do not use an installer(an obvious exception to self-extracting archives, which are a program.)If a program normally has an installer but has a portable version, the website will usually have some sort of indication of this, IE: Git for Windows' has a portable option next to its installer download.

Once you've figured out which one runs all your programs, delivers the best performance on your CPU, has the most solid drivers etc., you can just throw the other one into the local Recycle Bin.

I fucking love 4chan. Fine, I'll split up my reply, fuck you. 7 times.>>103156804While it is true that /most/ programs will operate to some extent, that doesn't necessarily mean that they're portable.A portable installation is a self-contained installation which does not rely on anything that the OS provides, outside of system calls.Under that definition, any program that uses the registry is NOT portable, as the registry hive violates the self-contained principle, and arguably isn't really a system call in the same way that OpenFile is either.

Annoying, but clever.>>103156381In most cases, it should be fine to have it in any directory and on any drive you want. A good program can be installed on any drive without consequence, and be moved around as you please. However, there are some edge cases. Some poorly written programs can't be stored on anything other than the C drive, but you can work around this by using a special command you'll have to look up. You'll need to use the /d switch on it. Some other slightly less poorly written programs will freak out if it's not the same folder as it was installed in. This happens for a variety of reasons. For example, Open Watcom compiler is bad about this, relying almost entirely on the path environment variable for its IDE. However, for the most part this is a minimal issue. Altering whatever it relied on, whether that be the path variable, or the registry, will cause it to work again, and it shouldn't be that much of a hassle.Unless your program is a paid program some sort of identifying factor like a serial key, you should also be copy it over to another computer and it'll work "well enough." Generally though, it's better to just run the installer on the new computer, rather than relying on copying, because of the aforementioned registered COMs and other potential dependencies that don't get carried over by just copying the program's directory over to a new computer.
I didn't spend that much time retrying attempt 10, I just was busy with something else.I'm pissed that somehow THAT got through, but https://litter.catbox.moe/oqfzjy.txt didn't.

>>103161581USB has been working well for me. The whole reason I have it is because I need windows to configure USB peripherals I have. Set and tinker kinda thing
>>103161552Well, firstly, if it's drag+drop, you need to make a user account first BEFORE doing that. The system doesn't recognize an account from that directory alone, despite how nice that would be...It will keep the documents but the programs are very iffy. There is a LOT of data that isn't kept in there, notably the registry stuff. That said, if it's JUST the user folder, then you don't seem terribly intent on trying to restore the programs right off the bat. You'll just have to remember to go into the folder properties and force ownership of the files over to the new account.(I had a file for that last part but unfortunately it doesn't work on Windows 7.)

>>103162514The monthly update rolls around at the second Tuesday of every month, which is pretty much the only kind of update that needs you to reset the computer for it to finish. November's is coming later in the day today.Otherwise you can use group policies to make it that Windows Update either downloads updates then lets you install them when you want or make it entirely manual. Just moved to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and it's ass in so many ways, for instance take the folder UI, the section I painted in red is the same color of the section above but you can only drag the folder on the section above, so you will often be dragging that area I painted red thinking it's one area with the section above since it's continuos and of the same color but in fact they are 2 separate areas, 1 draggable and the other below non draggable. But there's no visual indication or separation that they are in fact 2 separate areas. I personally don't think Windows 12 is either near or is going to be good, XP, 7 and 10 existed because their predecessors were so universally hated that MS was essentially forced to make a new version. I don't think 11 has reached those levels of hate yet, maybe in the tech bubble but normies are more or less ok with it, so I think 11 is in this grey area were MS knows it's not loved, but most people will eat it eventually, so I'm not confident that the jeets at MS have learned a single lesson to apply to 12

After several years, I want to reinstall Windows 10. I built the PC myself, so it didn't come with any OEM software and stuff. Given that, using "reset this PC" in Windows 10 would be identical to using the Media Creation Tool USB, right?
Is Win 11 LTSC worth trying? Reading so many horror stories about Win 11 24H2, not sure what to think.
>>103178127no, it's not.not 100% sure on the specifics but basically you have an option with USB to clean install, which would wipe and rebuild every partition, while "reset this PC" there's like 1 partition that doesn't get wiped, i'm uncertain if it's the bios or somethingi'd recommend USB and clean install ofc

Had to disable all the eyecandy of course, but it is usable. Pretty nice that Microsoft offers this less-bloated version.
>>103182427MS offers the LTSC versions of Windows for lower power PCs that don't need all the bloat of a typical GAC install. There's a reason why most recommend it as the edition to use on your own computer, especially with how easy it is to freely activate.
>>103182457Also to say that LTSC is advertised to businesses and industry as an OS for medical machinery or ATMs, as the buyers just load up all the shit that needs to be for the machine's purpose. With the happy accident that you can use it on home PCs more then fine.

>>103175302Windows 11's "requirements" of Kaby Lake and Zen+ are because they're the first CPUs that support MBEC/GMET, which massively speed up user<->kernel mode switches (30-40% is the figure I keep seeing). This is how you know how many poors are using bypasses to install 11 on their povertyboxes - because they're all screaming how much VBS, Core Isolation etc. (all of which switch context frequenty) slows down their 2500Ks. today my external hdd suddenly disappeared from windows. if I unplug it I still hear the windows device unplugged sound, and I don't see any errors in device manager. it initially was totally gone, but after unplugging it and plugging it back in, I got it to show up in my computer, albeit in a broken state. but the really weird thing is if I try to open something that interfaces with drives, like partition manager or crystaldiskinfo, they just hang and can't open properly, like trying to get info about the hdd is killing them somehow. I tried plugging it into a different usb port just in case, but no dice. the only thing I've done today is install samsung magician and change my ssd from standard to full performance mode, but I don't know why that would kill an unrelated external hdd. any ideas?

This might not be the correct place to ask but I figured I'm not the only one that had to deal with the same issue.Since a few days ago the file thumbnails are completely broken. If I restart the PC, they work again and after a while it goes back to not working.
