How to get Steam to actually launch games on XP or Vista?

There are dozens of guides to get Steam and its games working successfully, and this used to work for a while back for a few years after they dropped support in 2019. But recently, you simply cannot launch ANY game because they're all stuck in a "Update Queued" state, even if the games were up to date. Pressing the "Verifying Integrity of Game Content" option also triggers this and cannot be escaped. Copying the game files from a new PC's OS to the old one doesn't fix this either, and launching the game directly from the common folder doesn't work anyway because it launches it through Steam.

This is a true dead end for XP/Vista, because it seems Steam HAS to somehow connect to its servers and verify the game files, where the old shared build doesn't have any provisions for it. Unless there's a solution?

There was a leddit post that mentioned "spoofing" Steam by using a connection to a modern PC as a proxy, but I couldn't find the post and I don't know if it actually worked out or not.

fyi I already do have a W10 PC with Steam installed, but I want to get Steam working on the older OS laptop for personal reasons.

Retarded question: How do I do this for a VM? I'm a linuxfag but I need it for vidya.

Don't HWID activate VM installs. Use a local method like KMS38 from the same script suite or use aboddi's KMS_VL_ALL instead.

Login "verification" e-mails never come through in time, if they arrive at all.
Is this just me?
Is it Thunderbird?
Is it Outlook?
Is it the websites sending the e-mails?
Can't see what the problem would be
>>
>>103200539
If you suspect it's Thunderbird, resend the verification and check outlook web. If it is not in outlook web, then it won't be Thunderbird. The only possible problem would be the website.
I had a problem where I was not getting login links from Eventbrite, and I kept trying, thinking it was either thunderbird or my web email. After contacting support, it turns out my email was blocked from them due to some reason. i would recommend contacting their customer support if you're not getting it in either thunderbird or your web client (also check spam first).

- Can I free upgrade from 10 to 11 with the same license key?

- How many GB should I dedicate to my C: system partition?

- I see there are 3 options to install:
>a. Perform a Full Upgrade, which keeps personal files (including drivers), apps, and Windows Settings. This is the default experience and is the one that Installation Assistant uses.
>b. Keep Data Only will keep personal files (including drivers) only, not apps and not Windows Settings.
>c. Clean Install will install Windows 11 and keep nothing from the Windows 10 installation. For more info, see Give your PC a Fresh Start.
I think last tried reinstalling with keeping programs, lots of stuff behaved weirdly. Is it handled better now, or is better to do a fresh clean install?
>>
>>103200873
You can upgrade to 11 for free legitimately from an activated 10 install, yes.
And yes it's best to clean wipe your target drive with diskpart while in the setup USB before installing to it so nothing goes wrong.
>>
>>103200894
Why use Diskpart instead of that "Clean Install" option which should automate this?
>>
>>103200908
diskpart's "clean" command wipes a disk the most thoroughly. You can get to a command prompt with shift+f10 within the setup to use it.
The thing I do is get to the drive select screen, notice how the drives are numbered, then load up diskpart and clean the disk I wanna install to. Then just refresh the listings and select the new unallocated space.

>>
>>103201527
Usually for customer service support, you wouldn't need to login, though you would need to provide your email. When I had trouble with Eventbrite, I contacted support using my gmail, and made sure to mention that I had problem with my outlook email. Customer support usually happens via email regardless of account status.
But yeah, most business would have a support or contact us page at the bottom of the site.

My Windows 10 Pro license of 10+ years dropped off after I switched to Linux and swapped out a motherboard. I don't use Windows much anymore, but I do keep it around to play games that still remain finnicky with Linux. Would this be a good time to sidegrade to the LTSC build?
>>
>>103201612
When you switch the motherboard that a modern Windows install had beforehand the license will disappear. And sure, install IoT LTSC 2024 and just keep it around so you have a modern Windows install to play games on that's very bloat free.

did the latest win10 update fuck with the taskbar color? i swear it used to have more contrast but now on darkmode it's a godawful #000000 which makes it less visually clear than something like a dark grey especially considering MS's autistic obsession with flat design and no drop shadows so you can never see fucking edges
and for whatever reason it's impossible to change the taskbar color without changing the whole windows "accent color" which is pretty retarded

It means that 10's CPU scheduler doesn't treat e-cores like e-cores, but as just a typical core pool. If you want to use the e-cores then use IoT LTSC 2024 which uses 11 (which supports e-cores properly.)

>>103209626
estrogen cores are weaker than p cores, they exist for lighter tasks and lower power consumption, but Windows assumes they're the same, putting the same load on them as with the p cores, that might sound catastrophic but in reality the difference in performance between W10 and W11 is almost negligible, maybe power consumption is the actual issue but most people don't care unless you're on laptop

Yeah, running your programs on E-cores that only have 60% of the go of P-cores is so negligible.
Friendly reminder that this is the same LTNPC who screamed for YEARS when Microsoft didn't backport the Ryzen scheduler to LTSC 2019, costing him just 8% performance.

Why is defender bad? I thought it's a good thing assuming you're not retarded and installing everything you see on the internet under the sun.
>>
>>103211205
From what I've noticed, there's 2 main problems with defender, it's still not great and it's pushed to user in the same classic Microsoft style.

For known threats it's good, but behavioral protection is ass even with all that cloud shit and sending hashes of your files that it only seems like an excuse to gather more telemetry and eat more resources. And because it's an MS product, you just know it will do shit even if you don't want it and you can't even uninstall it, so there's that.

So, as an AV it's ok, but MS likes to take advantage of every shit they can to lock you up
>>
>>103211297
What's a good alternative AV then, besides just running your browser through a sandbox?
>>
>>103211301
right now Bitdefender, Kaspersky was up there but you know what happened, although some anons will argue that for the average user just running Malwarebytes from time to time is enough.

Better behavioral protection is when you want to protect yourself from stuff that's harder to detect like ransom and botnets, but to be fair, if you know what shit not to click, you're not THAT exposed really, so if MS you can put up with MS shenanigans then defender is still "fine"

>>103213045
All you need to do to make 10 or 11 more respecting of you is to change your edition to Enterprise with MAS, re-activate with HWID (also with MAS), then download ShutUp10 and enable its recommended settings to disable all the telemetry garbage and such.
Overall 11 is very, very similar to 10 on the backend. The UI is different, the Settings app looks different and some extra features have been added but otherwise it's still pretty 10-esque.
>>
>>103213068
So essentially it's just 10 but I need to disable all the telemetry shit all over again? I guess that's not so bad.

The settings that've already been set will stay set after you let the Windows Update derived 11 update go through. You can always just check again yourself though, just keep in mind that some settings are in different places. It's having teething problems with networking and storage. Got a wifi card? Blacklisted for now. Got a WD SSD? Blacklisted for now.
You can install it yourself if you want (just get an ISO, mount it, run setup.exe), but don't come crying to me when it thinks you have three network cards, none of which actually work.

With LTSC you don't really need to debloat anything. You could even end up breaking stuff. Just disable telemetry in the GPO and you're good to go. Or even just use Shutup10 if you're really lazy.
>Is there any reason at all to ever consider using 2024 LTSC or w11 in general?
Only if your hardware is very new, like having an AM5 cpu or similar. Other than that you'll get the same performance on both. I recently tried LTSC 2024 and while my experience was mostly the same than with 2021 I really couldn't withstand the UI so went back to the later. Your choice and preference really.

Apparently it doesn't work on 11 because it reverts the icons right away, but it probably works on 10 fine.
>>
>>103217603
Sometimes it's not a lost cause though, but it typically becomes something you need special tools for. Pro data recovery can do more than you can do at home because they can desolder the flash and bypass the controller and read directly.

Some times the flash is just "forgotten" from the controller's POV but not overwritten or fully zero'd physically so if you have anything seriously important you're trying to recover it's beyond the scope of what you can do at home but potentially not 100% gone.
I would not get your hopes up but in the future remember this and consider SSDs to be more like volatile storage.

Might be a good idea to set up SyncThing on your SSD user data folders to sync it to a local NAS with versioning and snapshots so you can have your "undeletes" by visiting a NAS or you could even do it with an external USB HDD.

So I used this
https://github.com/asheroto/winget-install?tab=readme-ov-file#method-2---one-line-command-runs-immediately
Kinda dangerous running online scripts randomly like that
Nice thing about it, it scanned the machine for applications installed, despite using manual installation.
Linux doesn't have that.
And winget as application lacks a lot of documentaion.
winget upgrade
just list what packages that can be upgraded, and have to pass --all to make it work, i haven't found this in their page.

I used to use my 1080p 144hz monitor to play games, but I'm trying to switch over since it's partially broken and kinda hard to keep up with certain tasks. and I'm aware that downgrading Hz is noticeable, but it's outright bad and kind of unusable in competitive games.

syncthing

Syncthing is more for local sync between multiple computers/servers and such that you own. For cloud storage managing probably best to just use rclone.

>>103234301
your gpu is too shit to run 4k
>>
>>103234459
That is true, which is why I usually set my resolution to 1440p. But it still feels choppy and somewhat unplayable. Even though I can run games at framerstes higher than 60fps
>>
>>103234470
>Even though I can run games at framerstes higher than 60fps
ya, but is the framerate stable?
Run on 1080p and lowest settings you can manage and try both vsync on/off and if that resolves your "feels choppy", you know that it isn't on the 75hz.

1440p still has 1.8 times the pixels of 1080p.
Higher resolution doesn't just come with higher GPU work, but also with higher chosen LODs which have higher texture resolution. The larger texture has to somehow get into the GPU, which could get you a choppy frame when it loads them.

That's why all the scammers are so hard into upscaling.

How is a GUI program more "stable" then an answer file that does pretty much the same things as said GUI program

microwin has been around forever and is maintained by a lot more people, of course it will be more stable

This is probably a really niche usecase
Is it possible to move the whole user folder to a network share from a different computer and use that instead of the default C:\ location?

i think i found some bug, there's like a random delay when using start or going to windows explorer.

there's a way to use local account and you don't need password to login

I need to install a fresh copy of windows on a new internal disk. All I have is a working windows machine but no usb storage devices.
Can I somehow install new windows from another windows?

Rufus has an option to create windows-to-go drive, are there any downsides of using it for internal drive other than disabled feature updates (irrelevant on ltsc)

Why does it feel like the team working on windows is tiny as fuck now? I feel like it legitimately might just be like two guys, one trans thing, and one fat woman. When you look at the changelogs of insider things they are always presented by the same fat piggy woman, and usually boil down to adding like two meme changes that end up buggy and worthless for everyone except for like 0.05% of users that care about the niche shit they added. When was the last time microsoft added a big useful feature to W11 since it released half a decade ago?

Auto HDR is the best feature they have added

Phone Link got full wireless phone file browser in Explorer.
Though it's a collab with Samsung and Google so idk if Windows team actually did anything there.

I don't have a HDR monitor, so not really useful for my use case. Does it even work though? I heard it's buggy as fuck and tends to make colors look like shit or malfunctions in vidya. I want to wake up on a patch tuesday and see microsoft inform us that they just revamped every single ms app into winui3, added mica fully to edge, rewrote the kernel in rust and optimized it to give 15% performance gains on all CPU and GPU, and added proper vulkan pre-shader caching that works in every single game ever. Surely that's not too much for the literal biggest company in the entire world, in all of humanity's history?

yes, just run
winget install <list of application ids>
also look at winget.run for a winget builder.

Pretty basic and straight away, though some applications are not visible in the search, I had to look it up by package code, then it started to show with their name.
So I just double click this? or run with administrator?

half those apps are bloat, what's the use case to use LTSC a minimal build of windows with no preinstalled apps, and then shit it up with a bunch of third party spyware and bloatware that jizzes all over your registry, file explorer, task scheduler, windows firewall rules, and everything else.

How the FUCK do I remove Office RT Tool? The automatic activation keeps running (turns on the terminal and tries to activate MS Office) every few weeks. I got better permanent Office ohook activation from this thread, how the fuck do I get rid of shitty RT Tool? There's no option for turning it off (see pic), there's nothing on Rtool's github.

I suppose you can with registry hacks but the thing is that a lot if not most apps have the C: location hardcoded in them to write and read, and that will lead to errors

They have some people, Windows by itself is a wild jungle, and I feel like most of them just work in fixing bugs

I have the theory that their main problem is that the Windows team is mainly interns, and MS kicks them out every two years or so so they can get new and cheap workforce, but that results in not having a lot of people who actually understands the core functionality

Or maybe MS just doesn't want to put a lot of money on it, after all, the money is on Azure and Office, Windows has to be just "good enough" unless the market share is at risk (which might be since they just can't a clue)

My very real and legit education edition install has been flagged as pirated. Is there an easy fix for this or do I need to do an entire new install. My shit's debloated to fuck too so I'd really rather not have to spend a day fixing this shit.

Uninstall the KMS activation you used beforehand then re-activate using MAS's HWID or KMS38 modules.

Sorry for late reply, paste it into your terminal as administrator, if prompted for something press Y. Also yeah, it seems like some MS store packages don't show up there.

To download anything from the MS Store with winget you just need to install it via its product ID which you can get from the address bar when looking it up.
