I plan on moving over to AM5 yet choosing ram is more tiresome than I originally assumed

I heard 6000mt is the 'sweet spot' yet going to 6400 will slightly increase performance and anything higher than that is slower up until >8000 which requires a bit of tinkering around to get working

Should I just buy a 6000 kit then overclock it to 6400 and adjust the infinity fabric or whatever the fuck it's called? The main issue is there are a bunch of decent 32gb kits yet my use case would benefit from 64gb which has less options

Btw there is 1 decent 64gb kit yet with XMP only. Would configuring stuff manually be tiresome? I do not intend to run memtest for 2 days

Presumably you're making some money from this PC then so just get 6000C30. The upside from going higher isn't worth the potential instability. A bad RAM OC can, among other things, silently corrupt files i.e. your capital.

Good news my melanated friend; all of the CPUs mentioned so far have ≥8 cores.

>the single core benchmark i seen...
Actual gaming benchmarks generally show either parity or a small regression. It's not enough to dismiss the product alone but it is when a demonstrably superior model is significantly cheaper.
Don't get me wrong - Arrow lake is /fine/ in isolation. It works, it's more efficient for the ~same performance, and it genuinely does do better in some workloads. It's just not worth the money for a streaming rig.

>>
>>103234290

>>
>>103234254
Maybe you'd have a point if there was some disagreement among reviewers but "slight downgrade to parity" is basically unanimous. Passmark is a good synthetic but it's not a gaming workload. Gaming is heavily dependent on IO latency where Arrow Lake suffered a notable regression. The higher throughput, which Passmark measures, is almost, but not quite, enough to compensate.
Again, I'll reiterate that these CPUs are fine. Feel free to buy one if you've got a flexible budget and don't need to minmax. Just don't expect us to have much first hand experience.

Why, though?
It doesn't do any better than the 9700x for gaming, and recording/streaming is better done via GPU encoding.

it still baffles me that people choose Intel over AMD.

>Data corruption is not really an issue since everything gets copied over to my network anyway
That's why it's an issue. Unstable memory can corrupt files in the background, for example when your SSD is TRIMed, which then get copied to your network storage.
Now to be fair that is almost a worst case scenario (actual worst-case would be system corruption) so you shouldn't necessarily dismiss it out of hand. It's just that the payoff, i.e. <10% performance gain, isn't worth the potential loss. If you've really got enough work coming in where that gain is noticeably profitable then you might want to go for HEDT.
>>
so this is a shill right? nobody is actually this stupid right?
>>
>>103234353
i think the marginal performance increase with arrow lake is because of the ai functionality, like groundwork or foundation for it then the next gen after will be much better compared to previous gen to gen performance gains

>>103234270
I have no need for it at all, I'd be buying it purely on things I MIGHT do, like video editing, blender stuff, maybe monero mining, etc. I fucking love virtualization, but if I upgrade then I can repurpose my old build into a server, and I probably won't make use of the 9950x's full potential. AIO vs. air cool?

I had an NZXT Kraken on my last rig and it was supremely aesthetic with that sort of infinity effect but I remember it being quite whiny at that annoyingly high decible with the pump noise. Great temps though.

From what I read air coolers can reach just about the same temps while being more quiet since the only noise is from large fans, who are whisper quiet at low RPM. i dont think most people bother with overclocking anymore anyway...

QD-OLED always, it's just way more fit as a PC monitor.

the Zen3 top end were outrageously performant for their time. their price/performance in the here and now is very tough to beat. buying a 5800x3d or 5900x is a great idea if you need a decent PC for dirt cheap. especially because you can get B550 motherboards for as low as 50 buckaroos, max speed DDR4 RAM and gen3 nvme drives similarly being thrown out for almost nothing, etc. if you have no PC right now and depend on getting great value, buying into AM5 or God forbid a recent Intel platform is not wise in my opinion.

My advice is to test both resolutions before making a decision. Some of us are more sensitive to aliasing and pixel density than others. If you want to future proof and have the budget, then 4k is an obvious choice. But by the time 4k gaming, whether upscaled or native, is actually something the average pleb will engage in, 4k panels will be far cheaper than right now. Plus if you want a 4k OLED you're gonna pay shittons.

>>
>>103237144
do itttttt
more people that buy it the better, we can all collectively bitch at ASRock to give BIOS updates for every new feature
>>
>>103237237
Consider my advice. Experience both resolutions first. Maybe you'll be like me and fall in love with the crispness of 4k monitors (been using a Dell P2715Q for years now). Maybe you won't care for it and can save some money in the mid term. The 5070 is probably gonna be more comfortable with 1440p anyway.
>>
>>103236313
Another decisive C series victory.
>>
>>103237081
Depends, I used to find the difference in picture quality pretty obvious but ever since DLSS became a thing I haven't really cared that much.
I liked 4k for how much it helped with aliasing, but DLAA solved the issue. If your games benefit at all from running DLSS, the difference between 1440p and 4k isn't that crazy either.

In the end it's a matter of whether you prioritize FPS with high refresh rate monitors or picture quality. I find I care a lot more about the former so I went with 1440p for my primary display and I don't regret it.

If you're looking for a 240hz QD-OLED, just pick the cheapest one available to you as they all use the same panel.

the ones without those bulky heatsinks at the top and top left overheat their VRMs and end up bottlenecking the CPU

so basically all the budget mobos that dont have an integrated IO shield will only be good for the less power hungry CPU, some mobos also straight up cant power past 100w on the CPU

I've read that AIO's aren't as good as air coolers for the current AMD CPU's because the hot spot is off-center. I saw someone recommend buying an off-center mount for this, but then I read up on the few ones I could find and pretty much everyone who talked about them anecdotally said they actually made their AIO perform significantly worse than just center mounting it. This makes me feel like it's a nothing burger and the solutions are snake oil. I was wondering if someone knew of a good review that went over this specific problem and testing off-center mounts to see the results.
>>
>>103238827
Get a $35 phantom spirit and try it out for a week then compare with your AIO
>>
>>103238844
You aren't wrong, but I was hoping that maybe someone who actually does in-depth tests had already covered this, particularly utilizing the off-center mount with an AIO. I can't find much besides just people leaving reviews on the mounts saying they are seeing 8-10c temp increases after switching to off-center.

I know this is barely /g/ related but so far PSSR seems to be a flop, right?
It only looked good in Ratchet & Clank and that's because it has an extremely high input resolution (basically Ultra Quality) and the Sony devs hand-tuned it to perfection.

But as soon as PSSR was integrated into other games with the same low input resolutions other upscalers have to work with, it immediately ran into such a shit-ton of issues that it doesn't even seem reliably better than FSR2. Jedi Survivor looks worse with PSSR due to visual issues, same with Alan Wake, same with Silent Hill.

Maybe it'll get better with time but it's not a good first look for PSSR.

>>
>>103239833
First off, I wouldn't buy either one for a pure gaming rig. There's almost always something cheaper that does just as well.
If the PC is for work then check out the TomsHardware reviews of each. I forget which way it goes but one is slightly better at sustained writes while the other has better burst performance. That would decide it based on your specific workflow. Super marginal but you asked to debate angels on a pin so here we are.
Finally, per the OP, there's some issue with running a 990Pro on Linux. Cuts the speed significantly so prefer the 850X if you work on Linux.

For instance ASRock taichi x870 vs B650 for AM5 its just Wifi 7 vs 6, 1 less USB4 port, I think 1 fewer PCI slot (what the fuck do you need a second one for anyway?), and I cant really see what else.
As far as I can see ATX can fit more drives, but why not just get a NAS that draws less power than keeping your PC on all day?

Im Debating between the Fractal North and Lian Li Dan case (muh wood), but even though the north is more aesthetic, I can barely justify the ATX form factor because I just don't need the extra space...

>>
>>103237591
nah I got a feeling new games are going to need better hardware, either waitfag for the game BEFORE you buy the PC, or be disappointed.
also I used to shill the 12100f, which has 80% of the performance of a 7600 in gaming for half the price (i own it and it's good for basically everything except productivity, you get what you pay for), but it might actually be better to get a 9800x3d at msrp price (+ you need to bios update for most mobo's), since even running games at 1080p lowest settings above 60fps is getting difficult (like mohun wilds). And I care a lot more about FPS than quality.
However game developers are still making games that are trying to target the largest audience, and that audience are poorfags with a 3060 / 1650 which are the most popular GPU's on steam, so depending on the games you want to play, it's possible that you don't even need a new PC (tell us your specs, we will tell you what improvement you will expect, it's possible you have a gtx 1060, a 4060 would easily give you 2-3x more fps, it's possible you have a ryzen 3600, a 7500f is only 40% faster at best, same core count).
Also note I don't think 7900xtx is bad with VR (assuming you would ever be interested) but I still think there probably are still issues because nobody actually buys AMD (75% of users on steam use nvidia) because the 7900 XTX tricks people into thinking it's a 4090, when in reality it's closer to a 4080 super (the 4080s is like 5% faster), and a 7900 XT is a 4070 super (the 7900 XT is like 5% faster). So with AMD you get what you pay for, it's not actually a cheaper GPU. Also nobody cares about vram except for AI coomers (amd has a lot of issues with AI), and people who turn on raytracing ultra settings (you are never going to ray trace using AMD).

Just get any laptop with a 4060 (a 4070 laptop should cost the same, but it's not faster, it's the exact same GPU but overclocked). Note the 4060 is overpowered for your use case, but I assume you want to run unoptimized indie shit
good color screen is going to put you into the $2000 laptop section, you just need to deal with the same old IPS screen every laptop has (avoid VA).
If you really care about the screen, and you are open to having a PC, but you just REALLY don't want to build it, I got you something:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnnc3W9vExc
Then for a "nice" screen, you can get a IPS/VA mini-led which helps with higher contrast in the dark (BUT it's a curse, if you have OCD over the zone artifacting you might disable the local dimming while you are not gaming or watching film. But at the same time this is half the cost of OLED and you get rid of the most annoying parts of basic IPS backlights (when your whole screen is dark, like in a horror/space/etc you will easily notice the backlight glowing). Options:
Q27G3XMN (VA, 300 zones, but it's one of the better than average VA's, and VA is good for contrast, note VRR flickering is when your fps drops, and the review runs 10fps->180fps->10fps to cause to most flickering, not realistic, miniled artifacts are more noticable)
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/aoc/q27g3xmn
xiaomi g pro 27 (it is IPS, 1000 zones, note more zones != to better, what matter is if the zones are noticeable based on the algorithm, who knows?)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icYY_z3VQEk
OP has good suggestions for 1080p monitors.
Personally, you could probably get a macbook, just run a windows VM and deal with latency (maybe emulators work better).
>>103240340
10gb vram fits on a 4070, and I'm not a graphics autist, I'm a FPS autist, I lower my settings so I can get the most FPS possible. The second you lower the settings the vram drops down to whatever the min req GPU supports.
>>
>>103240531

*oh yea, you don't need to buy the e-gpu, that makes NO sense, just build a PC you save yourself like $100 and you get better hardware.
The EGPU is there as an upgrade, so if you can't run a game, just spend the $70 on the dock+cable, then buy a used GPU off facebook marketplace for $80 (1660 super /TI works well), and you will get 4x more FPS (8x more with a 4060, but that's $300).
Like the miniPC should be able to run VN's perfectly well.

i appreciate all the info, i didnt even know you could make a pc like that. but, i should have mentioned i do have a really good desktop pc thats only a couple years old. i just want a laptop for when im away from home and can still play most of my cheap steam key backlog on, without sacrificing the smooth framerate of a desktop. i havent had a laptop since like 2009 when i played minecraft at 25fps on my hp, so i have no idea what to expect performance-wise in 2024. im sorry you had to write all that though...
so a 'nice' screen just immediately puts you into "entire paycheck on a laptop" territory huh? another question i have about laptops, if it has a 'gaming-tier' gpu/cpu, does that greatly impact battery life even if im just running terraria or a vn? i dont mind keeping it plugged in but i dont want it to just shit all the juice out browsing the web because i have the hardware to theoretically play elden ring.

If you care alot about battery life, I actually highly suggest getting a macbook but I just remembered that only the macbook pro came out (macbook air is still m3), and it's $1600 for 16gb 512gb storage (you can use portable storage like usbc to nvme adapters, but it's inconvenient for portability). However you do get a very good display (much better than the air, 10k zone mini-led, 120hz, GPU is similar to a 4060, you can get a non-reflective display for $150 extra that reviewers show).
But honestly it would make more sense to get a better display for your desktop if you spend more time on your desktop watching content. You could totally get a regular boring laptop without a GPU.
If you bought a GPU laptop, the GPU should not be enabled while being portable (you can force it on but it will reduce the battery life), however that might make the laptop less useful if you want to game while being portable. While the macbooks don't turn off the GPU (but of course, for gaming, macbooks are a bit of trouble).
It's also possible you want a steam deck or similar (but I can't say right now is a good time to get one, the steam deck is quiet weak but good enough for 99% of all games at 30fps).
